Robin (Martinez) Longstreet
November 12, 1927 - April 14, 2007

SHREWSBURY - Robin Jean (Martinez) Longstreet, 79, of Round Table Road, Shrewsbury, formerly of West Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain, died Saturday in Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital after a period of declining health. She is survived by her daughter Darcy L. D'Urso, and her husband Joseph A., of Shrewsbury. She also leaves her two loving grandchildren, Chelsea, and Matthew, also of Shrewsbury. Robin's husband William A. Longstreet, died in March, 2006.
Robin was born in New Orleans, the daughter of the late Fiddis and EmmaJeanne (Gazzo) Martinez Ambuter. She graduated from the Choate School in Boston in 1945, and attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts.
Mrs. Longstreet was an active member of the Doric Docents, with whom she served as, President, Vice President, Coordinator of Lectures and Trips and official State House tour guide. She was also a member of the Tuesday Club of Jamaica Plain. She and her mother, Jeanne Ambuter, owned and operated Heritage Cooking, a test kitchen and food demonstration business.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours from 6-8 PM Wednesday, in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street.
Her funeral will be held at 10:00 AM in Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, 27 Main Street, Southborough. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.

Walter A. Cadran

ORANGE Walter A. Cadran, 67, of 175 Holtshire Road was found dead at home on Friday (5-17-2002) after becoming ill while mowing his lawn.

Born in Montague, March 2, 1935, he was the son of Walter J. and Elizabeth H. (Mosher) Cadran. He grew up in Montague and had lived in Greenfield and Leyden before moving to Orange 25 years ago.

Prior to his retirement, Cadran was a machine operator at the Nicholas & Stone Co. in Gardner. He had also worked in the cutting room at the former J.F. McElwain Co. in Athol for 18 years.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and vegetable gardening. He liked watching sports, especially football.

His wife, the former Althea Hunter, died in 1992.

Survivors include several cousins. His friend was Merrill Wesson of Orange.

Services will be private. Interment will be in West Orange Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Wittys Funeral Home is directing arrangements.

Shirley T. Bukowski

BERNARDSTON Shirley T. (Letourneau) Bukowski, 66, of 101 Bald Mountain Road died Tuesday (5-21-2002) at the Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

She was born in the Bronx, N.Y., Dec. 24, 1935. She graduated from the former Powers Institute in Bernardston, where she lettered in basketball. She had been a resident of Greenfield before moving to Bernardston in 1988.

Bukowski was a homemaker.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Greenfield.

She enjoyed soap operas, dancing, crossword puzzles, gardening and roller-skating.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Richard W. Bukowski Sr.; two sons, Richard W. Jr. and Daniel J., both of Greenfield; two daughters, Theresa M. of Greenfield and Debra J. Raymond of Winchester, N.H.; a brother, George Letourneau of Bernardston; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services, all in Greenfield, will be Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday evening from 6 to 8.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Sacred Heart Church Renovation Fund, in care of Aksamit, 75 Prospect St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Ryan A. Barnes

SOUTH DEERFIELD Ryan Alexander Barnes, 2-year-old son of Ronald and Cynthia (Bartos) Barnes of 110 Hillside Road, died Monday (6-24-2002) at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born in Greenfield, July 23, 1999.

Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Jeremy, and a sister, Amanda, both at home; his paternal grandmother, Mavis Barnes of Northfield; his maternal grandmother, Louise (Plaza) Bartos of South Deerfield; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Drozdal Funeral Home, 29 Elm St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. James Church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday evening from 6 to 8.

Donald K. Johnson

TURNERS FALLS Donald Kendall Johnson, 79, a resident of the Winslow Wentworth House, 60 J St., died Tuesday (5-21-2002) at the Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

Born in Montague, Feb. 28, 1923, he was the son of Ward C. and Daisy L. (Russell) Johnson. He was educated in Montague schools.

Johnson was retired after being a conductor for the Boston & Maine Corp. for more than 35 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Conductors.

He attended the North Leverett Baptist and Shutesbury Community churches.

He was a fan of country western music and had played the steel guitar for many years. He was a member of several area bands for many years and was a member of the Country Western Society of St. Petersburg, Fla.

He was a member of the Baystate Lodge of Masons in Montague Center.

He enjoyed fishing, the outdoors and traveling.

His wife, the former Etta B. Andrews, died in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Brian A. of Northampton and Mark D. of Leverett; three daughters, Cynthia L. Riddell and Deborah A. Prentice, both of Turners Falls, and Donna L. Bastarache of Leyden; three brothers, David of Northfield, Russell of North Carolina and Kenneth of Montague; two sisters, Barbara Bigelow of Tennessee and Gloria Howard of Greenfield; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews including three who cared for him, Daniel and Andy, both of Shutesbury, and Ward of Greenfield, and grandnieces and grandnephews. Two close friends were Ted Cumberledge of Shutesbury and Judy Keech of Greenfield.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be observed Saturday at 11 a.m. at the North Leverett Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel Johnson, nephew of the deceased and pastor of the Shutesbury Community Church, officiating. Private interment will be in Plainview Cemetery, North Leverett, at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of Western New England, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

McCarthy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles A. Bartos

SOUTH DEERFIELD Charles A. Bartos, 82, of 109 Lee Road died Wednesday (6-26-2002) at the Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

He was the husband of Anne (Laskey) Bartos whom he married Feb. 9, 1944.

Born in Sunderland Nov. 6, 1919, he was the son of Stanley and Adeline (Vinitski) Bartos.

He attended Sunderland schools and moved to South Deerfield in 1966 an had been a resident there ever since.

He was employed by the states Department of Public Works as a heavy equipment operator for 26 years, retiring in 1984.

He attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Greenfield for many years.

He enjoyed gardening, working on his grounds, watching old movies, traveling and fishing.

Besides his wife he leaves a son, David C. of Bangor, Maine; a daughter, Charlene A. Perchak of Spencer; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are at the Walker Funeral Home, 14 High St., Greenfield Friday at 1 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Charles Tyree, pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.

Burial will follow in Green River Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers gifts in his memory may be directed to the Corner Stone Christian School, 395 Chapman St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Genevieve S. Niedbala

GILL Genevieve Jennie S. Niedbala, 83, of 10 Center Road, died Saturday (7-6-2002) at Poet Seat Nursing Home, Greenfield.

She was born in Gill, Oct. 11, 1918, the daughter of Joseph J. and Mary (Kowal) Niedbala Sr.

She graduated from Turners Falls High School in 1937 and had been a lifelong resident of Gill.

She was a clerk for the Greenfield Tap & Die Co. for 41 years, retiring in 1983.

Niedbala was a communicant of St. Marys of the Assumption Church in Turners Falls, and enjoyed gardening and knitting.

Survivors include two brothers, Walter of Turners Falls and Joseph of Gill; a sister, Blanche Pappas of Roosevelt, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at noon in St. Marys of the Assumption Church with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Marys Cemetery.

A calling hour will be Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Marys Church Renovation Fund, 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls 01376, or to Poet Seat Nursing Home, in care of the Activities Fund, 359 High St., Greenfield MA 01301.

Michael B. Cole

ACTON Michael Bennett Cole, 64, of Acton died of heart failure June 27 at home.

Cole was involved with the trolley project in Shelburne Falls.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., Oct. 16, 1937, he was the son of Charles and Jean (Masters) Cole. He graduated from the University of Rochester with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of the ROTC.

Cole served in the Air Force from 1961 to 1965, graduating from navigator school in Waco, Texas. He was a navigator at Otis Air Force Base, Cape Cod.

In 1965, he moved to Acton and began his career as a mechanical engineer at Polaroid, retiring after 30 years of service.

In the 1960s and 1970s the Coles were active in breeding and showing wire fox terriers and Irish terriers.

He enjoyed spending time in western Massachusetts and was dedicated to land preservation, particularly in Franklin County. In 1997, Cole became actively involved in the trolley project and began spending time between Acton and Shelburne Falls. He worked with great attention to detail regarding the authenticity and accuracy of the restoration process. In 1998, he joined the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum Board of Directors, which opened a year later. He became chairman of the board in 2000, and until the present worked on grants for the museum. He was the chief motorman and conductor, as well as the head of the staff training program.

Cole was also the president of the Acton Historical Society from 1976 to 1978. In the late 1970s, he served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America Troop 76. He also enjoyed gardening and bird watching.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, the former Sharon FitzSimons; a son, Eric M. of Fairfax, Va., and a daughter, Amy G. of Chicago, Ill.

A memorial gathering was held June 30 at the Acton Womans Club.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum, P.O. Box 272, 14 Depot St., Shelburne Falls, MA 01370.

Acton Funeral Home handled arrangements.
