Elizabeth G. Avery

COLRAIN Elizabeth G. (Cummings) Avery, 65, of 198 Jacksonville Road, died Monday (7-22-2002) at home.

She was born in Everett on April 26, 1937, the daughter of Richard N. and Helen (Wilder) Cummings.

She was a graduate of Wakefield High School and a graduate of New England Baptist School of Nursing.

She was employed by the hospital as a registered nurse until her marriage to Kenneth W., at which time she moved to Colrain. She and her husband would have observed their 42nd wedding anniversary on July 23.

During the late 1970s she served as interim school nurse at Mohawk Trail Regional School in Buckland.

Avery was a member of the Colrain Community Church, where she was deaconess and Sunday school teacher. She was a former member of the Colrain Snowdrifters Club, the Colrain Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization and the former Colrain Grange. She had also been a Red Cross swimming instructor for the town for several years.

She had served as president and treasure of the Massachusetts Jersey Cattle Club as well as breed representative and youth breed representative. She was a former director of the New England Jersey Club.

She served on the Massachusetts dairy industry promotion committee and was co-manager of the milk promotion booth at the Massachusetts building at the Big E Eastern Exposition in West Springfield,

She was also a director of the Massachusetts Farm Bureau and the womens state committee.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons, Craig W. and wife, Michelle R., of Colrain and Thomas R. and wife, Shelley R., of Shelburne; a daughter Robin E. Hartnett and her husband, Timothy J. of Colrain; seven grandchildren, a niece and four nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Colrain Community Church. Burial will be in North River Cemetery.

She enjoyed baking, quilting, gardening, square dancing and climbing the rocks of the Maine coastline.

There are no calling hours.

Donations may be made to either Hospice of Western New England, 48 Sanderson St., Greenfield, MA 01301 or the Oncology Department of the Franklin Medical Center, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Mary E. Cooney
July 7, 1929 - May 21, 2007

AUBURN, MA - Mary E. Cooney, 77, of Auburn died peacefully in her home on Monday, May 21st.

She was the daughter of the late George A. and Gertrude (Doyle) Cooney of Auburn.

Miss Cooney was a graduate of Saint Peter's High School and the Worcester School of Business Sciences. She worked as a benefit specialist for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts in Springfield. She later worked for UMass Hospital in Worcester as a billing manager.

She was a director of Pernet Family Health Services, Worcester.

She is survived by her sister Grace M. Cooney, and by her brother John J. Cooney, both of Auburn. She is also survived by 21 nieces and nephews, and by 31 great nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her four brothers, William, George, Edward, and James, and by her two sisters, Gertrude Collins and Dorothy Cooney.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd at 10 AM in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Dr., Auburn. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Leicester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pernet Family Health Services, 237 Millbury St., Worcester, MA 01610.

Henry J. Mauri

GREENFIELD - Henry J. Mauri, 79, of 44 Graves Road, died Monday (7-22-2002) at the Franklin Medical Center.

He was born in Greenfield on Dec. 13, 1922 the son of Frank and Lillian (Schick) Mauri.

He attended elementary schools in Greenfield and was a graduate of Deerfield Academy, class of 1941. Mauri worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public works as a construction engineer for 36 years, retiring in 1984. He was also a registered land surveyor.

He was World War II Army veteran of the 414th Infantry. He served in France, Belgium, Germany and Holland and received the Bronze Star.

He was a life member of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks and a member of the John F. Harrington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 417 of Greenfield.

Among his survivors are his wife of 56 years, the former Beverly E. Bruce; a son, Jay V. and his wife Paula of Erie, Pa.; a daughter, Patricia J. Petrin and her husband, James, of Bernardston; four grandchildren, Aimee M. Petrin of Burlington, Vt., Angella J. Petrin of Brighton, Lisa J. Thomas of Bloomington, Minn. and Hugh B. Chip of Richfield, Minn. and four great-grandchildren.

A son, Henry Skip Jr. died in 1968.

Funeral services will be private.

Burial will be in Green River Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Salvation Army, 72 Chapman St., PO Box 346, Greenfield, MA 01302.

William H. Merriott

MILLERS FALLS William H. Merriott, 84, of Central Street died Sunday (7-14-2002) at the Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

Arrangements, under the direction of the Kostanski Funeral Home, Turners Falls.

Madge I. Burke

GREENFIELD - Madge Ina (Holbrook) Mudd Burke, 94, of 359 High St. died Saturday (7-13-2002) at the Franklin Medical Center.

Born in Greenfield, April 26, 1908, she was the daughter of Fred E. and Adella (Caswell) Holbrook. She attended Greenfield schools and graduated in 1926 from Greenfield High School and the former Greenfield Commercial School. She had lived in Greenfield for most of her life, but had lived in Mexico, Maine, from 1971 to 1986.

Burke was a piano teacher. She also played piano and organ in many of the area churches.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Greenfield and the Congregational Church in Mexico, Maine.

She was a life member of the Historical Society of Greenfield, a charter member of the Quota Club of Greenfield, where she held several offices.

Her first husband, James E. Mudd, and her second husband, Wendell J. Burke, both died in 1983.

Survivors include a son, J. Edward Mudd Jr. and his wife Rita of Vernon, Vt.; a stepson, Robert H. Burke and his wife Linda of Winthrop, Maine; five stepdaughters, Nancy Knox and husband Conrad of West Peru, Maine; Pauline Smith and her husband Robert of Englewood, Fla., Barbara Bowden of Tulsa, Okla., Linda Jose of Boston and Betty Surette and her husband Edward of Netcong, N.J.; 13 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Historical Society of Greenfield, 43 Church St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Thomas A. Broughan

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. Thomas Arthur Broughan, 84, of Grass Valley, formerly of Greenfield, Mass., died Monday (7-15-2002) in Grass Valley.

Born in Greenfield, Aug. 31, 1917, he was the son of Walter Sr. and Mary (Varley) Broughan.

Broughan was a World War II Navy veteran.

Prior to his retirement, he was a car salesman at the former Petrin Motors Sales in Greenfield. Previously, he was employed by the Bond Bread Co.

For the past 15 years, he spent the summers with his nieces, Sharon and Marita, and her son Mark in Greenfield.

While a summer visitor, he attended St. Patricks Church in Northfield, Mass.

He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed music and history.

His wife, the former Phyllis Mahan, predeceased him.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Jr. and Russell, both of Auburn, and Robert of Citrus Heights; three daughters, Sheila St. Germain and Susan, both of Grass Valley, and Debbie of Carmichael; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and other family members.

A daughter, Peggy Loux, also predeceased him.

Services and burial will take place in California.

A memorial Mass will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Patricks Church in Northfield with the Rev. John Ayers officiating.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Patricks Church, Main Street Northfield, MA. 01360.

Chapel of the Valley, Citrus Heights, is handling California arrangements.

ARTHUR C. FAIRBANKS JR.
August 10, 1933 - September 29, 2007

AUBURN, MA - Arthur C. Fairbanks Jr., of Washington St. Auburn, 74, died Saturday in his home after an illness.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 Years, Rose Marie (Benoit) Fairbanks, his two daughters; Brenda Grenon, and her husband Forrest, of Auburn, and Michelle Lubin, and her husband Daniel, of Auburn, he leaves twelve grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Other members of his family include four stepchildren; Donald Desautels, of PA Judith Pariseau, of Auburn, Cindy Wolanski, of CT, and Russell Desautels, of FL.
He was born in Worcester, the son of the late Arthur and Yvonne (Beland) Fairbanks, Sr. He was educated in Auburn schools.
He served his country proudly, as a member of the U.S. Army.
He worked for Day Brothers GMC, in Auburn for many years, and retired from AMI Leasing in Worcester. He also worked at Sears in Auburn part-time for 21 years. He was a member of the Local 170 Teamsters Union.
He was an avid Red-Sox and Patriots fan, but his favorite activity was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
His funeral service will be held Saturday October 6, at 11:00 AM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn.

Millicent A. Stroheker

SHELBURNE - FALLS Millicent A. (Burnap) Stroheker, 82, formerly of 33 Williams St., died Tuesday (6-25-2002) at the Anchorage Nursing Home in Shelburne.

Born in Shelburne, Feb. 15, 1920, she was the daughter of Caroll and Millicent (Hawley) Burnap. She attended local schools, graduated in 1939 from the former Arms Academy and from the former North Adams School of Nursing.

Stroheker was employed for many years at LaBelles Rest Home.

She was an active member of Trinity Church.

She was past noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge, a member of the Shelburne Falls Womens Club, board member of the Valley Education Association and the Buckland Historical Society.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Taylor of Rogersville, Tenn.; a brother, Gaius Burnap, and a sister, Caroline Stacy, both of Shelburne Falls; two grandsons and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place at Trinity Church at a later date. The Rev. David Neil, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Arms Cemetery.
