Roger M. "Stretch" Olson
January 14, 1919 - March 5, 2006

AUBURN, MA - Roger M. "Stretch" Olson, 87, of 295 Pakachoag Street, Auburn, formerly of Grafton, died Sunday, March 5th in the Life Care Center of Auburn after an illness.

He leaves his wife, Mary M. (Skamarak) Bucinskas Olson; two daughters, Linda J. and her husband David A. Pearlstein of Hopkinton and Mary E. and her husband, Karl E. Hubbard of South Grafton; a sister, Marion Hunt of W. Brookfield; four grandchildren, Christopher and Andrew Mazza and Keith and Kathleen Hubbard; six step-children, Bonnie Johnson and husband Dick of Auburn, Judy King and her husband, Lenny of Auburn, Gail Messier and her husband, Dick of Leicester, Diane Ferguson and her husband, Jerry of Auburn, Raymond Beauregard and his wife Terry of Upton, and Wendy Beauregard of Auburn. He is also survived by many step-grandchildren, step great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first two wives, Catherine (Riordan) Olson and Ida "Rickie" (Lindberg) Olson.

Mr. Olson was born in Auburn, son of the late Martin and Alice (Fleury) Olson and had lived in Grafton for many years before moving to Auburn 20 years ago. He graduated from Hitchcock Academy in Brookfield and then had entered the military serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps during W.W. II.

He had worked as an Inventory Manager at Wyman-Gordon for 38 years before he retired in the early 1980's. Roger also was a well known local entertainer. He had played in several area clubs and for many private functions throughout the years.

He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Auburn, where he served as a lector, deacon, usher, and was a member of the choir and the men's group there. He also was a former member of the Frohsinn Club in Shrewsbury.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Roger's family on Wednesday, March 8th from 4-7 P.M. in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His funeral will be held on Thursday, March 9th at 10 A.M. in Bethel Lutheran Church, 90 Bryn Mawr Avenue, Auburn. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Memorial contributions can be made to the Bethel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 90 Bryn Mawr Avenue, Auburn, MA 01501.

Wightman S. Tyson

WARWICK - Wightman Shearer Tyson, 101, of Warwick and a former resident of Medford died Friday (7-19-2002) at Harborside Healthcare Applewood in Winchester, N.H.

Born in Macon, Miss., Oct. 21, 1900, he was the son of John A. and Fanny (Longstreet) Tyson. He grew up in Starkville, Miss., and Atlanta, Ga., and graduated in 1923 from Mississippi State College.

Tyson subsequently received a commission as a second lieutenant of infantry in the Army.

He served as deputy chancery clerk of Noxubee County, Miss., for five years. In 1928, he accepted an accounting position with the United Fruit Co. in Guatemala, where he met and married his first wife.

He began a 35-year career with the National Shawmut Bank of Boston in 1930, as a clerk in the transit department. Later, he served as senior clerk in the bookkeeping department, manager of the special checking department, and examiner in the auditing department before he retired. He moved to Warwick in 1965.

He was a member of the Shawmut Bank Revolver Team which won a New England Revolver League Championship in the Bank Division.

Tyson was honored in 1999 to receive the Boston Post Cane from Warwick as the eldest resident of the town.

He was the husband of the late Mary T. (England) Tyson, the late Elizabeth (Watson) Ryerson Tyson and the late Calloway (Kirby) Tyson.

Survivors include a daughter, Greta E. Tyson and her husband Alburt M. Rosenberg of Harwich; a stepson, William T. Ryerson and a stepdaughter, Marjorie L. Ryerson of Winchester.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Town of Warwick (for Warwick Elementary School), 12 Athol Road, Warwick, MA 01378.

Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Wittys Funeral Home in Orange.

Ann E. Mokrzecky

HADLEY - Ann E. (Skawski) Mokrzecky, 88, of 301 River Drive died Friday (7-12-2002) at Sunbridge of Hadley.

Born in South Deerfield, Feb. 6, 1914, she was the daughter of Dominick and Aniela (Kurowski) Skawski. She graduated in 1932 from Deerfield High School.

Mokrzecky was a communicant of the Most Holy Redeemer Church

An avid gardener, she also enjoyed reading, cooking and nature.

Her husband of 53 years, Edward P. Mokrzecky, died in 1995.

Survivors include four sons, Philip, Edward R., Alexander and Paul, and a daughter, Mary Ann Mish, all of Hadley; a sister, Blanche Hukowicz of South Deerfield; eight grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A son, Joseph, died in 1973.

Services will be Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. from the Drozdal Funeral Home, 120 Damon Road, Northampton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in Most Holy Redeemer Church. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home are today from 3 to 7 p.m.

Ralph J. Capalbo, Sr.
October 27, 1913 - September 16, 2006

SHREWSBURY - Ralph J. Capalbo, Sr., 92, of Westborough, formerly of Shrewsbury, died Saturday, September 16th in the Beaumont of Westborough.

His wife of 66 years, Elizabeth R. (Viola) Capalbo died May 31st. He leaves a son, Ralph J. Capalbo, Jr., and his wife, Loretta of Shrewsbury; a daughter, Janice, wife of David Hoadley of Epsom, New Hampshire; a sister, Antoinette Beauregard of Weathersfield, CT; five grandchildren, Scott Hoadley, Kristine Kidder, Robert, Chris, and Nick Capalbo; and eight great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Worcester, son of the late Francesco and Maria (Spezzano) Capalbo and had lived in Shrewsbury for more than 50 years before moving to Westborough. He attended Worcester schools.

Mr. Capalbo founded the New Method Plating Co. in 1931, and was the President and later the CEO until his retirement. He was very active and highly regarded in the metal finishing industry. Throughout most of his long career he was a member of the National Association of Metal Finishers (NAMF) and the American Electroplaters Society, and was bestowed the honor of Life Membership in the NAMF upon his retirement.

He was an enthusiastic sports spectator, an avid golfer, and long time member of the Worcester Country Club and the Adelphi Council #4181 Knights of Columbus.

Ralph was a caring and loving grandparent to his five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Ralph's family on Tuesday, September 19th from 4-7 P.M. in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 20th at 10 A.M. in Saint Mary of the Hills Church, 630 Cross Street, Boylston. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).

Michael W. Chaplin Sr.

ORANGE - Michael W. Chaplin Sr., 40, of 82 Mechanic St. died Friday (7-12-2002) at home following an illness.

Born in Greenfield, Nov. 15, 1961, he was the son of Victor Sr. and Dellafin (Ferguson) Chaplin. He grew up in Orange and graduated in 1980 from Mahar Regional School.

Chaplin was employed by Handford General Contractors in Springfield. Previously, he worked for All-State Asphalt in Sunderland for 10 years, the former E&S Development Co. in Orange and the Orange Highway Department.

He was a member of Union 98 in Springfield.

He married the former Shelly Allen, June 28, 1986.

He enjoyed golf, hunting, his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and spending time in Maine. He also was an accomplished cook.

Besides father of Orange and his wife of 16 years, he leaves two sons, Michael W. Jr. and Tyler D., both of Orange, and two brothers, Victor and Jay, both of Orange.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Wittys Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., with the Rev. Stephanie Sermuksnis of the Orange United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in South Cemetery. Fellow Harley-Davidson followers are requested to wear their Harley-Davidson clothes and drive their motorcycles.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice of Western New England, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Susan J. Mercier
June 12, 1952 - September 8, 2006

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Susan J. "Sissy" (Mandella) Mercier, 54, died Friday, September 8th in the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC, after an illness.
Born in Worcester, Susan was the daughter of Joyce M. (Kathan) Mandella of Auburn and the late Henry A. Mandella. Besides her mother, she leaves her husband, Robert H. Mercier of Christiansburg, VA, her two sons; Kyle B. Mercier of Springfield, VA and Korey S. Mercier and his wife Jennifer of Blacksburg, VA; four brothers, Donald P. Mandella and his wife Patricia of Auburn, Timothy J. Mandella of Tuscon, AZ, Michael A. Mandella and his wife, Linda of Lunenberg, MA, and Stephen A. Mandella of Auburn; two sisters, Linda J. Ryerson and her husband, Allen of Lake Worth, FL, and Dianne L. Laliberte and her husband Bruce of Southbridge, MA; a grandson, Corbin R. Mercier of Blacksburg, VA and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Susan has lived in Virginia for 15 years. She worked for many years as a real estate assistant for ReMax Allegiance, Woodbridge.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Susan's family on Wednesday, September 13th from 5-8 PM at the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 14th at 10 AM in St. Joseph's Church, 189 Oxford St., Auburn. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester.

Margaret S. Price

AMHERST - Margaret S. (Slaker) Price, 88, of Applewood at Amherst died Monday (7-22-2002) at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. She was the mother of Walter K. Price of Conway.

Born in Ossining, N.Y., June 16, 1914, she was the daughter of Harrison and Eleanor (Kimball) Slaker. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Mount Holyoke College, receiving her bachelor of science degree in chemistry and her master of science degree in chemistry from Columbia University. She had lived in Schenectady, N.Y., for 25 years before moving to Amherst in 1968.

Price worked for the N.Y. State Department of Health before concentrating on her family and home.

Since moving to Amherst, she attended North Congregational Church.

She was a member of the Hampshire Bird Club, Amherst Conservation Commission and the Amherst Womens Club. She volunteered at both the Amherst Survival Center and Jesses House in Northampton.

She was an avid birder, enjoyed concerts and plays, hiking, fishing and gardening.

Her husband, Fraser P. Price, predeceased her in 1976.

Besides her son, she leaves a daughter, Carol Quaden of Chelmsford; a sister, Betty Morse of Potter Place, N.H., and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the North Congregational Church with a reception to follow. Burial will be private.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the North Congregational Church, 1199 North Pleasant St., Amherst, MA 01002.

The Douglass Funeral Service is handling arrangements.

MARGARET M. (O'LOUGHLIN) MCCARTHY
February 19, 1920 - September 14, 2007

NORTHBOROUGH - Margaret M. "Peg" (O'Loughlin) McCarthy, 87, formerly of Shrewsbury, died Friday, September 14th in UMass Memorial Medical Center- Memorial Campus.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband, William J. McCarthy, Sr., in October 2006. She is survived by her children, Joann M. Brennan and her husband, Richard P. of Grafton, William J. McCarthy, Jr., and his wife, Maura of Holden, Deborah A. Quitadamo and her husband, A.J. of Medfield, Maureen T. Miller and her husband, Brian of Auburn; also survived by 11 grandchildren, Tricia and Sean Brennan, Kate, Kevin, Mary, Johanna, and Colin McCarthy; Bob and Ellyse Quitadamo, Michael and Patrick Miller; a sister, Katherine C. O'Loughlin of Worcester; nephews, nieces and her godchild, Mary Appleton of West Boylston. She was predeceased by three brothers, Michael, Jr., John, and Thomas O'Loughlin and three sisters, Elizabeth O'Loughlin, Mary Hynes and Helen Cooney.

Peg was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Michael J. and Johanna (O'Shea) O'Loughlin and lived in Shrewsbury for over 30 years before moving to Northborough in 2004.

Mrs. McCarthy was a faithful member of Saint Mary's Parish in Shrewsbury and a former communicant of Our Lady of Angels Church in Worcester, Massachusetts

Peg's relatives and friends are welcome to visit with her family on Monday, September 17th from 9:00-10:00 AM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 17th at 11 A.M. in Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury with Monsignor Edmond T. Tinsley being the principal celebrant. Burial will be in the family lot in Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester. Memorial contributions in Peg's memory can be made to McAuley Nazareth Home for Boy's, 77 Mulberry Street, Leicester, MA 01524 or to the VNA Hospice, 333 Turnpike Road, Southborough, MA 01772.

Charles A. Gerstel

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Charles Albert Gerstel, 88, of Cape Coral, former resident of Greenfield, Mass., died July 16 at the Woodlands Assisted Living Facility.

His wife, the former Georgianna Peters, predeceased him.

Born in Boston, Mass., he was the son of Rudolph and Mary (Hogh) Gerstel.

Gerstel had been a meat cutter at the former Carpenters Superette on Silver Street in Greenfield, which later became Stop & Shop.

He and his wife had lived in Greenfield until 1989, when they moved to St. James City on Pine Island.

Gerstel served as a technical sergeant in the Army Medical Corps during World War II, and was involved in the North African Campaign and the invasions of Sicily and Italy.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Phyllis Greene of St. James City, and her husband Robert and Elizabeth Carpenter and her husband Donald of Granby, Mass.; a grandson, Robert J. Greene Jr. of Winchester, N.H.; three great-granddaughters; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held at the Woodlands facility. Burial will be in Red Brick Cemetery, Colrain, Mass., at a time to be determined.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, Western Mass. Chapter, 11 Campus Lane, Easthampton, MA 01027.
