Sybil L. Hathaway

LEESBURG, Fla. - Sybil L. Hathaway, 76, of 32321 Haven Court, formerly of Brookside Road, Orange, Mass., died Tuesday (7-30-2002) at the Leesburg Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Phillipston, Mass., April 18, 1926. She grew up in Phillipston and attended its schools. She had lived in Orange most of her life and since 1998 in Leesburg.

Hathaway worked at Erving (Mass.) Paper Mill for many years until her retirement. Previously, she worked at the former Hospital Cottage for Children in Baldwinville, Mass., were she helped misplaced children.

She was a member of the First Universalist Church in Orange and a former member of its choir.

She enjoyed gardening and baking.

Survivors include four sons; Ronald Ferguson of Athol, Mass., Duane E. of Bradenton, David L. of Eustis and Steve D. of Leesburg; a sister, Helen Partridge of Mesa, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be in Tully Cemetery, Orange, at the convenience of the family.

Higgins-OConnor Funeral Home, Athol, is directing arrangements.

Donald Markey
March 9, 1928 - February 12, 2007

MILLBURY - Donald Markey, 78, of Phillips Dr., died Monday, Feb. 12th at UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, after a brief illness.

He leaves his devoted wife of 49 years, Mary Ellen (Trudell) Markey; his daughter-in-law, Diane M. Markey of Shrewsbury, his three grandchildren, Jennifer L., Laura E. and David S. Markey all of Shrewsbury; his brother, George Markey of Worcester, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his only son, Brian D. Markey in September 2006. He was also predeceased by his four brothers, Harold, David, Lawrence and Theodore, and his sister, Doris M. Egan.

He was born in Washington, DC, son of the late George and Doris (Higgenbottom) Markey and was raised in Worcester. He graduated from Worcester schools.

Mr. Markey had a long career in banking industry in the Worcester area. He retired as an assistant vice president with Fleet Bank / Bank of America, working in the commercial lending and real estate appraisal areas. He was a member of the Appraisal Institute and taught courses in appraisal at the former Worcester Junior College. Mr. Markey was also a professional musician, playing saxophone and clarinet with several local groups. He taught music to many area students during the past 50 years, and was a member of Local 143 of the American Federation of Musicians. He was a member of Saint Brigid's Parish in Millbury and served on the Millbury Planning Board for 14 years. His greatest joy was being a caring and loving grandfather to his three adoring grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury on Thursday, Feb 15h from 6-8 PM. His funeral will be held Friday, Feb 16th from the funeral home with a Mass celebrated at 10 AM in Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.

Jeanette L. Hale

WENDELL - Jeanette L. (Sak) Hale, 53, of 104 Depot Road, died Wednesday (7-31-2002) at the Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield following a brief illness.

She was born in Montague on June 11, 1949, the daughter of Walter and Helen (Karpinski) Sak. She graduated from Turners Falls High School 1967.

She had been resident of Palm Springs, Fla. prior to moving back to Turners Falls in 1996. She had been a resident of Wendell for the past five years.

She was a day-care provider for various day-care centers in Florida.

Hale possessed a talent for arts and crafts and enjoyed creating art for her family and friends.

Besides her mother of Turners Falls, she leaves a son, Brent M. and his wife Bridget of Medford; two sisters, Dorothy E. Juskiewicz and her husband Walter of Winterport, Maine, and Diane P. Bonnette of Turners Falls, a niece, a nephew and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral Services will be Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in Turners Falls with the Rev. Charles DiMascola, pastor officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be this evening from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Czestochowa Renovation Fund, 84 K St., Turners Falls, MA 01376 or to the Franklin Medical Center, care of The Intensive Care Unit, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Clement C. Durkee

ATHOL - Clement C. Durkee, 88, of 703 Pleasant St., died Thursday (8-1-2002) in the Baldwinville Nursing Home.

Born in Orange, June 19, 1914, he was the son of Charles O. and Ellen L. (Anderson) Durkee. He grew up in Orange and graduated in 1932 from Orange High School.

Durkee worked at the Erving Paper Mill for several years and was employed at the L.S. Starrett Co. for 35 years. He retired in 1979.

He was a former member and an original founder of the Beagle Club in Orange.

He coached YMCA Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball.

An active sportsman, he had played baseball, basketball and football.

His wife of 59 years, the former Mary J. Bevis, died in 1998.

Survivors include three sons, Richard D. of Athol, Jim of Meredith, N.H., and John C. of Attleboro; a sister, Marion Adams of Athol; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Highland cemetery with the Rev. Dr. R. Lee Smith, pastor of Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Fiske Funeral Home is directing arrangements.

CHARLOTTE T. (ARYTON) HARRINGTON
March 11, 1919 - January 8, 2006

AUBURN, MA - Charlotte T. (Ayrton) Harrington, 86 of Auburn, died Sunday in the Life Care Center of Auburn, after an illness.
Her husband of over 65 years, Dubrelle "Dick" Harrington died several weeks ago.
She is survived his daughter, Sandra M. Jewell of North Oxford; his three sons, Richard G. Harrington of Tucson, AZ, Lyle D. "Joe" Harrington of West Boylston, and James M. Harrington of Omaha, NE; eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and a brother Russell C. Ayrton, of Sarasota, FL
She was born in Worcester, the daughter of the late William and Mary R. (Coley) Ayrton. She was educated in Worcester, graduating from South high, and later the Felt + Tarrant Comptometer School.
Mrs. Harrington worked as a switchboard operator for the former Mechanics Bank in Worcester for many years.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Auburn.
Following cremation, burial in Hillside cemetery will be private. There are no calling hours.

Dorothy R. Ryan

GREENFIELD - Dorothy Rose (Blake) Ryan, 89, formerly of 73 Dell St., Turners Falls, and most recently of Atlanta, Ga., died Saturday (7-27-2002) at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility.

Born in Athol, March 4, 1913, she was the daughter of Joseph and Grace (Kenny) Blake. She moved to Greenfield with her parents as a young child, was educated in Greenfield public schools, graduated in 1933 from Greenfield High School and attended Becker Junior College in Worcester.

Following graduation from high school, she was an administrative assistant and clerk for the Greenfield Public School System. She later was a clerk and cashier at the former Braff Royal Cleaners and then for the former Comet Cleaners in Turners Falls, retiring in 1972.

Ryan attended Blessed Sacrament Church and Holy Trinity Church. For a period of time, while living in Turners Falls, she attended St. Marys Church.

She was a member and past president of the Greenfield Emblem Club and former member of the Women of the Moose of Greenfield.

She was married to Patrick Ryan in Holy Trinity Church, May 29, 1937. Her husband of 48 years died in September 1985. Before her husbands death, they had lived in Florida for several years.

Ryan moved to Georgia to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law following her husbands death. She moved with her family back to Greenfield to be closer to her native home.

She enjoyed sewing, crafts, cooking, baking, bingo and deep sea fishing.

Survivors include her daughter Rosemary E. Hawkins of Greenfield and her husband James A. Sr. and their children, Rebecca E. and James A. Jr., at home; an aunt, , Anna Duplisses of Athol; several nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews and a cousin and his family.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Calvary cemetery with the Rev. Ronald G. Yargeau, pastor of Holy Trinity Church, officiating.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Western New England, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301, or to Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.

McCarthy Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Helen E. Storey

SOUTH DEERFIELD - Helen Elizabeth (Farley) Storey, 94, of 19 Hillside Road died Sunday (7-28-2002) at home.

Born in New York City, N.Y., Jan. 29, 1908, she was the daughter of Phillip E. and Mary (OConnell) Farley. She attended St. Columba School, Blessed Sacrament High School and Hunter College. She lived in Mamaroneck, N.Y., from 1936 to 1960. She also lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Alford.

Storey was co-owner and operator of Camp Half Moon with her husband, Dr. Edward J. Storey, from 1943 to 1967. Her husband died in 1988.

She was past president of Mamaroneck Garden Club, district director of N.Y. State Federated Garden Clubs, district director of Florida Federated Garden Clubs, member of the Larchmont Junior League, past president of Holy Cross Hospital Auxiliary, chairman of Holy Cross Blood Bank Center and member of the Board of Directors of Tilton Library.

She did volunteer work for the Fairview Hospital Auxiliary, Great Barrington Visiting Nurses Association and the Berkshire Garden Club. She was a life member of the American Daffodil Society and the New York and Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.

Survivors include a son, Edward J. Jr. of Orland, Maine, and his wife Marion Q.; a daughter, Amy S. Rokoszak of South Deerfield and her husband Myron C.; grandchildren, Tracey E. (Merrigan) Peixoto, Mark W. Merrigan, Edward J. Storey II and Ann-Marie Storey Hamer.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9 a.m. in St. James Church. Burial will be in Lovell Lake Cemetery, Sanbornton, N.H.

Calling hours at the Wrisley Funeral Home are this evening from 7 to 9.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Western New England, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Charles W. Scott

GREENFIELD - Charles W. Scott, 71, of 276 Chapman St. died Sunday (7-28-2002) at home.

Born in Greenfield, March 26, 1931, he was the son of Merle W. and Mary E. (Conley) Scott. He graduated in 1949 from Greenfield High School. He was a lifelong resident of the town.

Scott was a self-employed contractor/truck operator for Allied Van Lines for 45 years, retiring in 2001.

He was a member of the Second Congregational Church.

He was a former member of the Turners Falls Rotary Club as well as a member of the National Riflemens Association.

He enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, the former June F. Bates; two sons, Gary J. of Augusta, Maine, and his wife, Lee, and Donald of Greenfield and his wife, Lynnette; two daughters, Catherine M. Randall of Salem and her husband, John, and Sharron J. Tobin of Greenfield and her husband, Gavin; a brother, Robert W. of Falmouth; a sister, Muriel L. of Mansfield, Conn.; four grandchildren, Scott Barlow and Emily, Chris and Lauren Scott, and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held Thursday at the Walker Funeral Home, 14 High St., with the Rev. Charles Tyree, pastor of the Greenfield Alliance Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Green River Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice of Western New England, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.
