Malvern A. "Mal" Anderson
January 14, 1912 - August 11, 2007

AUBURN, MA - Malvern A. "Mal" (Trask) Anderson, formerly of Auburn, died Saturday, August 11th in the Hospice of the Valley, Eckstein Center, Scottsdale, AZ.

Her husband, Melvin Anderson died in 1980.

She leaves her son, Paul M. Anderson and his wife Gail of Scottsdale, a sister, Genevieve Anderson of Florida; three grandchildren, Cheryl Elliot, Jeffrey Anderson, and Kristen Anderson; 5 great grandchildren, Chelsea Anderson, Molly Elliot, Meaghan Elliot, Maddie Anderson, and Kristofer Anderson. She was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Paul and Elizabeth (Zelva) Trask and lived many years in Auburn before moving to Arizona. She also wintered in Florida for many years.

Mrs. Anderson worked for many years as a sales associate in the china department of the former Denholm & MacKay in Worcester. She later was an active volunteer for 25 years at the Auburn Senior Center.

Besides the senior center, Mrs. Anderson was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester and was a trophy winner many times over in her candlepin bowling leagues, and was an avid cribbage player. She loved watching her Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mal's family on Friday, August 17th from 10-11 AM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. A funeral service will follow at 11 AM. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.

FREDERICK C. ANTONI, JR.

Auburn - Frederick C. Antoni Jr. 61, of Auburn died Saturday October 13 after a brief illness.
He is survived by a son Steven P. Antoni, and his wife Kimberly, of Rutland, and a daughter Melissa J. White, and her husband Dennis of Holden, and a grandson Zachary White, as well as two brothers, Kenneth Antoni of Arizona, and Dennis Antoni, of Colorado, and a niece and a nephew.
He was born in Worcester, the son of the late Frederick C. and Irene (Leroux) Antoni.
He was a Vietnam War veteran, he served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Unit.
He worked as a machinist for Worcester Envelope, retiring several years ago.
He enjoyed playing softball for many years.
Funeral and burial plans will be private.

DONALD R. APHOLT
August 28, 1927 - March 10, 2007

HUBBARDSTON - Donald R. Apholt, 79, of Williamsville Rd. and formerly of Shrewsbury, died Saturday, March 10th in UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester.

He leaves his wife of 18 years, Barbara A. (Puzo) Apholt; his children, Donald Apholt, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Oakham, Pamela J. Apholt of Worcester, Mark D. Apholt and his wife Melinda of Holden, Maria A. Gallagher and her husband John of Worcester, Kim Magnuson of Leominster, Debra Robinson of Hubbardston, and Sandra Thorpe and her husband Douglas of Hubbardston. He was the "Grumpy grandpa" to his 19 grandchildren, Ian, Josh, Lauren, Matthew, Kate, Carly, Olivia, Jake, Connor, Hunter, Maire, Cole, Cory, Kevin, Chris, Joshua, Elijah, Michael and Sean, and to his four great- grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, Mary Turner and Judie Locke, both of Belmont, and his brother Paul Apholt of Auburndale. He was predeceased by his first wife, Leah A. (Bacchiochi) Apholt and his step-son, Richard Magnuson.

He was born in Worcester, son of the late George and Irene (Rea) Apholt and lived in Shrewsbury for many years before moving to the Holden and later Hubbardston areas. Don left high school early to join the US Navy during World War II as an underage enlistee. He served in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Princeton, survived several fierce air battles and watched as his ship was sunk. He worked for more than 50 years as a member of Local 96, I.A.T.S.E. and had served as their secretary/treasurer for more than 30 years. He was also the owner of the former Showtime Services, a trade show display company for 15 years.

He was a member of Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church, Worcester and the Matthew J. Whittall Lodge of Masons, Shrewsbury, most recently attending Christ Church Episcopal in South Barre. He loved to travel and enjoyed being known as the grumpy grandpa, cool uncle and great Dad to his whole family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, March 12th from 4-7 PM in Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury His funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 13th from the funeral home with a funeral service at 10 AM in Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church, 695 Southbridge St., (at Cambridge St.), Worcester. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.

Joseph Arduini Jr.
August 7, 1935 - July 7, 2006

AUBURN, MA - Joseph Arduini Jr. died Friday July 7, 2006 at St Vincent's Hospital. He resided in Auburn, and was formerly of Shrewsbury. He was the son of Ethel (Calo) and Joseph U. Arduini. Joe worked at the Arduini Mfg Corp, in Worcester, as a skilled metal worker for several years during the 1950's. Joe assisted his father in constructing a 30ft steel fishing boat which he also helped maintain at Watch Hill, RI. Joe enjoyed many summers fishing and exploring the waters of R.I. Sound. He is survived by four daughters, Karen F. Lavallee, Gayle A. Arduini, Andrea Arduini and Tina Bergeron all of Worcester; his sister, Sylvia A. Warner of Shrewsbury, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Justin Edward Armstrong, Jr.
March 25, 1925 - July 1, 2006

BOYLSTON - Justin E. Armstrong, Jr., 81, of Warren St., died Saturday, July 1st in the UMass Memorial Med. Center, Worcester, after a long illness.

He leaves his loving wife of 35 years, Helen L. (Roberts); his step-son, Daniel Smith of Connecticut; his step-daughter, Donna McGowan of Georgia; his 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

He was born in Petersham, son of the late Justin E. and Augusta (Nelson) Armstrong and has lived in Boylston for more than 30 years. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He retired in 1985 from the Westborough State Hospital, where he had worked for 20 years.

At his request, there are no calling hours or services to be held.

The Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Madeline J. Army
June 6, 1912 - April 23, 2007

Auburn - Madeline J. Army, 94 of Auburn, died Monday, April 23, 2007 in Beaumont Nursing Center, Northbridge, MA after an illness.
She leaves one brother Walter F. Army of East Falmouth, MA, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She is predeceased by a sister Marilyn D Army, five brothers, Clifford M. Army, Howard H. Army, Walter R. Army, Lawrence C. Army, George H. Army, one niece Carol Mong, and one grandnephew, David Mong.
She was born in Worcester, MA daughter of Josephine (Scullero) and Walter Army.
Miss Army was a nurse and teacher. She graduated from the Cumberland Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, NY. She attended Columbia University and New York University and received her B.S. degree in Education from Clark University.
Miss Army worked at Cumberland Hospital in Brooklyn and The Memorial Hospital in Worcester. She taught nursing arts at Becker Junior College before she joined the Administration Nursing Service at the V.A. Hospital in West Roxbury, MA. She served as Chief, Nursing Service at Castle Point, NY, Newington, CT, Providence RI, and Fort Lyon, CO from where she retired to rejoin her family in Worcester, MA to enjoy golf and family get- togethers.
Her funeral Mass will be held Wednesday May2, 2007 at 10:00 AM in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn. Burial will follow in Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours.

Maud M. Arnold
June 17, 1911 - July 31, 2007

Worcester - Maud M. Arnold died peacefully on July 31st. She was born in Worcester on June 17, 1911, to her late parents Mr. and Mrs. Carey E. Melville. Mrs. Arnold is survived by her sons Thaddeus A. Arnold of Lillian, Alabama, James M. Arnold of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and Robert S. Arnold of Sturbridge, Massachusetts; 5 grandchildren, Steven, Kim, Jeffrey, James Jr. and Jennifer and 10 great grandchildren. She was recently predeceased by her former husband, Alfred S. Arnold.

Mrs. Arnold was educated in the Worcester public schools, attended American University and graduated from Boston University. Formerly a Psychiatric Social Worker, Maud was a faculty member at Quinsigamond Community College, where she established and chaired the Gerontology Program until her retirement. She also served on staff at Worcester State Hospital, the Worcester Community Action Council, Worcester Area Age Center and the Family Service Organization. Maud was also a recipient of the George A. Wells "Good Neighbor Award".

Maud was very active in the Episcopal Church. Together with her parents, she was a founder of the Chapel of Saint James the Fisherman in Wellfleet, Massachusetts through a gift of land for the site of the Chapel and collaborating on the building design. Maud attended Saint Mark's Church in Worcester for many years, was a delegate to ESMA and was a member of the Episcopal Housing Corporation of Worcester.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 14th at 10AM in Saint James the Fisherman, Wellfleet. Burial will follow in the church memorial garden. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chapel of Saint James the Fisherman, P. O. Box 1334, Wellfleet, MA 02667.

Katherine G. "Kay" (McNamara) Ashe
October 28, 1922 - July 21, 2006

AUBURN, MA - Katherine G. "Kay" (McNamara) Ashe, beloved wife of Thomas R. Ashe, Sr., and treasured mother of Katherine Craw and husband Ian of Gainesville FL, Patricia Ricciardi and husband Butch of Shrewsbury, Thomas R. Ashe, Jr.. of Auburn, and Cheryl Duhamel of Worcester, passed away at home, with her husband and children by her side Friday, July 21.
Born to James McNamara, Sr. and Grace (Scott) McNamara on October 28, 1922 in Worcester, Kay was the second of ten children. Of those ten, she leaves behind her brother, Thomas McNamara of Worcester, and her sister Jane O'Keefe of Newburyport.

On September 25, 1945, Kay married Lt. Thomas R. Ashe of the US Army Air Corps at the Immaculate Conception Church in Worcester. In 1950, Kay and Tom moved to 150 Oxford Street in Auburn, Tom's childhood home, where they have lived ever since, where they raised their four children and where they welcomed their eight grandchildren. Grandchildren are Cliff English, Lynn Ricciardi Cotton, Nicole Ricciardi Keller, Gina Ricciardi, Katie and Andrew Ashe, Amy and Christopher Duhamel, and one great grandchild, Steven Duhamel. Along with her immediate family, numerous nieces and nephews will mourn and miss her.

Kay has been a member of St. Joseph and North American Martyrs Parishes in Auburn for over 55 years. She was employed by Zayre's at Webster Square Plaza for more than twenty-five years and retired as Customer Service Manager.

The sun rose on Kay in October of 1922 and set in July 2006. The eighty-four years in between have been a blessing to everyone who knew her. May she rest in the peace she richly deserves and be remembered well and often by all those who love her.

Elizabeth A. (DeMaria) Aubain
October 18, 1921 - August 14, 2007

Elizabeth "Bette" A. (DeMaria) Aubain, of 13 Melvin Avenue, Shrewsbury, went home to the Lord on October 14, 2007. She was married to "Al" Aubain until his passing in October, 2002. She leaves her daughter, Karen A. Gammell, wife of Walter W. Gammell of Charlton, MA; her grandson Timothy C. Barry of Shrewsbury, her great-grandson Valic Fair of Dudley, her sisters, Mickey Bombard of N. Carolina, Katherine Sbrogna and Mildred Swett of Shrewsbury, Mary Sargentelli of Bridgeport, CT., her brother Patsy DeMaria of W. Boylston, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her extended family Todd Gammell of Norwich, VT., Jennifer (Gammell)Lawless of Rockville Center, NY and their families as well as her sisters-in-law, Jeanette Casey of Shrewsbury and Josephine Aubain of Florida. She was predeceased by her sisters Antoinette Ramsey, Lucy Breault and her brothers Michael DeMaria and Joseph DeMaria all of Shrewsbury.

Born in Worcester on October 18, 1921, daughter of Marguerite (Lopriore) and Frank DeMaria, she attended Worcester schools and moved to Shrewsbury in her late teens and lived there until 2004 when she moved to Notre Dame du Lac Assisted Living in Worcester. She was married to her devoted husband, Adgenord (Al) Aubain on February 5, 1944 and remained the love of his life until his passing. Bette worked for many years in Worcester at GE Telechron then at DePierros Plastics, Shrewsbury schools and then ran the children's nursery at the Shrewsbury Tennis and Racket Club before retiring. She was a faithful member of St. Anne's Church, Shrewsbury. She was a member of the Frohsinn Club, the Women of the Moose and the American Legion Victor Quaranta Post women's group for many years. She loved being with her family. Over the years Bette loved to spend summer vacations at the beach with her family and holiday gatherings and Sunday family barbeques were her favorites.

In her later years, she and her husband Al spent winters in Florida and summers at Cape Cod as well as at her second home in Moultonborough, NH. She really liked being with her family especially her grandson, Tim and his son Valic. Her love for children was always present. Always a busy woman, she was an avid walker, a card player, loved music and dancing and working in her garden and yard. She liked to travel and finally got to London in 2002, a trip she looked forward to all her life.

Her last 3 years at Notre Dame du Lac were a joy to her as she was surrounded by lot of social activity, attended daily Mass, made many new friends and loved and was loved by all.

The family would like to acknowledge the medical staff at St. Vincent Hospital for their kindness and care and especially the VNA Hospice nurses and staff at Autumn Village Nursing Home for their tender and loving care of Mom through her final days.

Bette's life will be celebrated at a Funeral Mass of the Rite of Christian Burial at St. Anne's Church, Route 9, Shrewsbury, on Saturday, August 25 at 10:45 AM and all are welcome. Committal will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.

Eleanor K. (Gurgzdis) Babin
January 26, 1917 - January 15, 2007

SHREWSBURY - Eleanor K. (Gurgzdis) Babin, 89, formerly of Shrewsbury, died Monday, January 15th in the Radius Healthcare Center in Millbury after an illness.

Her husband of 52 years, Stanley Babin, died in 1994. She leaves a sister, Antoinette Ervin of Millbury; two daughters, Sandra Brown and her husband, Richard of North Easton, Nancy Kovar and her husband, Robert of Wrentham, her son, William Babin and his wife, Joanne of Sutton; six grandchildren, Brian, Daniel, and Michelle Babin, Christopher, Michael, and Katelyn Brown, and three great grandchildren.

Eleanor was born in Sutton, daughter of the late Anthony and Katherine (Nortonis) Gurgzdis and moved to Shrewsbury in 1955. She graduated from Becker College and was a Bookkeeper at Package Builders Inc. in Sutton for 32 years, retiring at the age of 82.

She was a member of Saint Mary's Parish in Shrewsbury and was an avid flower gardener. Eleanor was a mother who devoted her life to ensuring happiness for her children and their families.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Eleanor' s family on Friday, January 19th from 4-7 PM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St. Shrewsbury. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 20th at 10 AM in Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.

Frances W. Baker
November 11, 1927 - June 3, 2006

Auburn - Frances W. Baker, 78, of 17 Goulding Dr., went home to God June 3rd from her home.

Her husband of 35 years, Walter Baker passed away in 1981.

She was also predeceased by three children. Judith, Joyce and Douglas, and three sisters, Nanny Jane Renales, Dolores Karas, and Pollyann Carmichael.

She was the mother of Kathie Baker with whom she shared her home, and Bonnie, wife of Edward Lindquist of Leicester. She was like a mother to two grandchildren, Douglas Short of Auburn and Jody Coran of Worcester, and a powerful influence in her five other grandchildren, Jennifer Short of Worcester, Kimberly, wife of Michael Petrides of Worcester, Robert Ramsey of Jackson, TN, John Coran, and his wife Stasia of Whitehall, NY, and Judi, wife of Kerry Osborne of Webster. She also leaves 10 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, .and then there's John..

She was born in Gloucester, the daughter of the late W. Bonnie and Elizabeth E. (Clancey) Carmichael and lived in Auburn for 58 years. As a graduate of Commerce High School and Salter Secretarial School, she worked for many years at the former Park Terrace Nursing Home and Northridge Furniture before retiring in 1992. She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Auburn. She was proud of her Irish heritage and her greatest pleasure was spending time with her grandchildren and their children. A memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 6th at 10 AM in St. Joseph's Church, 189 Oxford St., Auburn. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Frances wanted people who wished to send flowers, to send them to someone they love who can enjoy them for her. She wanted to thank the wonderful staff at The Meadows of Leicester for the way they cared for her.

Robert O. Baker
September 29, 1925 - May 14, 2007

SHREWSBURY - Robert O. Baker, 81, a resident of Christopher Heights, Worcester and formerly of Shrewsbury and Quincy, died Monday, May 14th in the UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester.

His wife, Jean D. (Doig) Baker died in 1995.

He leaves his three children, Craig H. Baker of Shrewsbury, Kenneth R. Baker of Feeding Hills, MA, and Deborah J. Baratz of Del Ray Beach, FL, and five grandchildren. He was born in Weymouth and lived in Quincy many years before moving to Shrewsbury in 1995. He has lived in Worcester for the past several years.

Mr. Baker worked as an insurance investigator and adjustor for the Insurance Company of North America prior to his retirement 25 years ago. He was formerly active in the Bethany Congregational Church in Quincy. He was an avid woodworker and loved to sail. He cherished his independence during his last few years and enjoyed the friends he had made at Christopher Heights.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, May 18th from 2-4 PM and 5-7 PM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury. Following cremation, burial in Pine Hill Cemetery, Quincy will be private.

HELEN ROSE (MILEWSKI) BALUKONIS
March 12, 1927 - October 19, 2007

AUBURN, MA - Helen R. (Milewski) Balukonis, 80, formerly of Elmwood St., died Friday October 19th in the Millbury Health Care Center.

Her husband, Walter J. Balukonis died in 1993.

She leaves her son, Fran Balukonis and his wife Janet; her brother, Robert Milewski and his wife Lois, her two sisters, Natalie Suprenant and her husband Richard, and Phyllis Taylor and her husband Raymond; and her sister-in-law, Betty Milewski, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three brothers, William, Thomas and Richard Milewski.

She was born in Clinton, a daughter of the late William and Rose (Tuminski) Milewski and has lived in Auburn for many years. She graduated from Clinton High School.

Mrs. Balukonis worked as an administrative secretary for Consolidated Beverage in Auburn for 25 years before retiring in 1990.

A gregarious woman, Helen always looked forward to the time she spent at the Auburn Senior Center, and with the St. Joseph's Parish Senior Steppers, enjoying their many excursions. She was also an active member of North American Martyrs Parish in Auburn.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, October 22nd from 5-8 PM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 23rd from the funeral home with a Funeral Mass celebrated at 10 AM in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Dr., Auburn. Committal services will follow in Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester.
