Shirley P. (Ward) McLaughlin
October 6, 1925 - July 13, 2006

WORCESTER - Shirley P. (Ward) McLaughlin, 80, of 559 Plantation St., and formerly of Shrewsbury, died Thursday, July 13th in the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, after an illness.

She leaves her three children, Shelley Majewski and her husband, Chester of Shrewsbury, Ward McLaughlin and his wife, Melissa of Holden, and Chrisann Taylor of Shrewsbury; her 10 grandchildren, Beth, Kate, Ryan, Meghan, Daniel, Zachary, William, Jennifer, Jillian, and Brittnie; and her four great grandchildren, Nathan, Benjamin, Taylor and Devin.

She was born in Salem, the daughter of the late Walter and Anna (Gustafson) Ward and had lived in Shrewsbury for many years.

Mrs. McLaughlin worked as an office clerk for Progressive Shippers in Worcester for many years before retiring.

She was a member of the Shrewsbury Women's Club, enjoyed golf and played in several leagues through the years, but most recently, Shirley truly enjoyed the staff and residents of the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, where she participated in many social activities.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with Shirley's family on Sunday, July 16th from 5-8 PM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury for visiting hours. Her funeral will be celebrated on Monday, July 17th at 11 AM in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury. After cremation, burial plans will be private.

Robert "Bob" L. McLeod
January 3, 1927 - December 13, 2006

SHREWSBURY - Robert L. McLeod (Bob), 79, of 1340 Gulf Boulevard, Clearwater, died Wednesday, December 13, at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester, after a courageous battle with multiple medical problems.

Bob leaves his longtime companion, Irene Fortier, of Shrewsbury, and his beloved daughters: Linda M. Cowart (Sam), of Clearwater, FL; Candace M. Haynes (Phillip), of Charlotte, NC; and Roberta M. McPherson (Jackie Craig), of Clearwater, FL. He also leaves behind his well loved grandchildren: Travis Cowart, 29, of Bradenton, FL; Lindsay M. Cowart, 21, of Clearwater, FL; Sean P. Haynes, 15, of Charlotte, NC; and Scott R. Haynes 13, of Charlotte NC., and Great Grandchildren: Trace & Cole Cowart of Bradenton, FL.

Born in Brockton, MA on January 3, 1927, to Dorothy and Kenneth McLeod, Bob graduated from Brockton High School in 1945, where he met his wife of 47 years, Beverly Kelley McLeod (predeceased on 5/18/1996). Bob continued on to attend Massachusetts Maritime Academy, subsequently serving in the Merchant Marine for a number of years. With a strong passion for the ocean, Bob, in 1997, moved his residence to Sand Key beach in Florida, where he could spend more time with his family and the beaches he loved to walk.

Bob McLeod became a member of the DeYoung agency of New England Life Financial in 1964 and became one of the top producers in the company. He was a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table, the Leaders' Association, and the Hall of Fame. He was the recipient of the Vanguard award and earned his Chartered Life Underwriters designation. Bob serviced hundreds of clients over the years, and was highly regarded in the Insurance industry. Bob will always be remembered as someone who truly cared about those he worked with and for, and who never minded giving extra time and effort, particularly in times of grief and loss.

Bob was a member of the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury, and served as a Deacon there for many years. He was also an ardent member of the Shriners' Association.

A Memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday January 13 2007, in the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury, 19 Church Road. A reception will follow. After cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury, MA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4801 86th Avenue North, Pinellas Park, FL 33782, or to the Shriners Children Hospital, 12502 North Pine Drive, Tampa, FL, 33612, in his name.

Barbara M. (Gearin) McMenemy
January 21, 1928 - January 15, 2006

AUBURN, MA - Barbara M. (Gearin) McMenemy, 77, of Aleda Drive, died Sunday in her home after an illness. Her husband William T. McMenemy died in 1982.
She is survived by her children; Patrick G. McMenemy, of Auburn and Michael G. McMenemy, of Marblehead, and Mary M. Loughlin, of Auburn, 6 grandchildren; Cara Brian and John Loughlin, all of Auburn, and Anthony, Carolyn and Thomas McMenemy, of Marblehead.
A brother John E. Gearin, Jr. died in 2005.
She was born in Worcester, daughter of the late John E. and Teresa B. (Lyons) Gearin, she was educated in Worcester, she received her Undergraduate Degree from Clark University and her Master's Degree, from Worcester State College. As a member of the Clark University, class of 1949, she was a pioneer, one of the first women to attend Clark, at a time when a college education and graduate degree were not often options for women.
She worked as a teacher in the Worcester School System for 25 years.
She retired in 1971.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, the National Teachers Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association, and the Education Association of Worcester. She was also a member of the Worcester Art Museum, and the Smithsonian Institute.
After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling and collecting antiques, gardening, and writing poetry.
Several of her poems were published.
Her funeral and burial plans will be private.

Patricia A. (Doyle) McNamara
March 9, 1933 - March 23, 2007

SHREWSBURY - Patricia A. McNamara, 74, of 50 Edgemere Blvd., died Friday March 23, 2007 at the Millbury Health Care Center after an illness.

Her husband of 29 years, William F. McNamara died in 1984.

Mrs. McNamara was active in the Shrewsbury community for many years as a Town Meeting member, softball player & most importantly a Mother. After raising her 11 children she worked for the Commonwealth of Mass at the Glavin Regional Center and for the Department of Fisheries & Wildlife.

She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Shrewsbury, Division #36 Ancient Order of Hibernians Aux. and was an associate member of the Vincent Picard Post American Legion, in Northborough, where she enjoyed socializing and playing Pitch.

Mrs. McNamara was born and raised in Hopkinton the daughter of W. Aubrey and Julia A. (Halloran) Doyle. She was a graduate of Hopkinton High where she played field hockey, softball and basketball and was proud to have played in the Boston Garden. She was a member of the Hopkinton High Hall of Fame and also a Gold medal Senior Olympian in basketball.

Pat leaves her 5 daughters, Kathleen Ohman and her husband John of Dennis, Maureen E. McNamara of Cambridge, Patricia A. Smith and her husband David of Plymouth, Annie A. of Shrewsbury with whom she lived and Janice E. McNamara of Seattle WA.; her 6 sons Kevin P. of Malden and his wife Lucia, Michael L. of Auburn and his wife Maribeth, Terry W. of Shrewsbury and his wife Bethany, Philip D. of Worcester and his wife Heather, William A. of Worcester and Edmund of Boston; her brother E. Aubrey Doyle and his wife Joan of Hopkinton, her brother-in-law Rev. Philip D. McNamara of Shrewsbury; two sisters-in-law, Marie McNamara of West Roxbury, and Arlene Kelley of Reno, Nev.

She leaves 14 grandchildren: Liam, Jon and James Patrick Ohman, Erin and Doyle McNamara, Dylan and Cassidy McNamara, Ryan, Brendan, Aidan and Mairead Smith and Julie, Amy and Harmony McNamara.

She also leaves many nieces and nephews, and "Timmy" the dog.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Monday March 26th from 2-4 and 7-9p.m. at Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home 648 Main St. Shrewsbury, Ma. Funeral Services for Mrs. McNamara will be held on Tuesday March 27th with a Mass celebrated at 10 A.M. at St Mary's Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery in Shrewsbury.

ELIZABETH ANN MCPHERSON
June 10, 1945 - March 11, 2007

Elizabeth A. McPherson- of Marlborough, March 11th. Beloved mother of Kenneth W. O'Neil, Jr. of Bolton and Robin A. O'Neil-Manning, of Northborough. Loving daughter of Gloria A. (Hayes) McPherson of Watertown and Charles McPherson of Rockland. Cherished Grandmother, of Andrea, Denis, Nicholas, William and Stefanie. Loving sister, of Donald, George, Charles, and Kevin. Visiting hours Sunday, March 18 th. 4-7 P.M., Britton Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Funeral Mass Monday, March 19 th, 10 A.M. Saint Anne's Church, 20 Boston Road, Southborough, MA. SHIRLEY M. (KELLEY) MCSHERA
April 23, 1932 - March 31, 2007

SHREWSBURY - Shirley (Kelley) McShera, 74, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Westborough died Saturday, March 31st after an illness.

Her husband, Donald Broverman died in 1995. She leaves a son, Patrick McShera and his wife, Denise of Southborough; a daughter, Maureen Foster and her husband, James of Shrewsbury; her grandchildren, Arlene M. Flynn of Long Beach, CA whom she raised, also Ryan, Sean, Tim, Meghan McShera and Matthew Foster; two step-children, Cliff Broverman and his wife, Veronica of Worcester and Dr. Sherryl Broverman and her husband, Dr. Gregory Wray of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and their two children, Anya and Eli Wray; also survived by a brother, Martin Kelley of Northborough and a sister, Patricia Bruce of Severna Park, MD. A daughter, Kathleen Flynn predeceased her.

Mrs. McShera was President of McShera Sales Inc, for many years. Shirley was very much ahead of the times for her generation. She enjoyed owning her own business and always promoted women in business. She later worked as a financial advisor for several years before retiring.

Shirley had several hobbies including knitting, playing bridge and traveling the world extensively.

A celebration of Shirley's life will be held on Saturday, April 7th at 11 A.M. in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Memorial contributions in Shirley's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.

Ruth A. (Coleman) Mercier
December 30, 1924 - July 30, 2006

Auburn - Ruth A. (Coleman) Mercier, 81, of Paul St., died Sunday, July 30th in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester.

She leaves her husband of 64 years, Joseph H. Mercier; her daughter, Jo Anne Carlson of Auburn; her son, Joseph H. Mercier, Jr. of Millbury; three grandchildren, Charles M. Carlson, Joselyn R. Mercier, and Jo Anne Mercier; and a great granddaughter, Rosmond Carlson.

She was born in Portsmouth, NH, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. John L. Coleman and has lived in Auburn for more that 50 years.

Mrs. Mercier retired from Liqui-Box Corporation, Auburn, where she had worked for several years. Previously, she had worked for the former Iandolli Market and Kotsea's Market, both in Auburn. She also worked for the former Brown Shoe.

ELSIE R. (LAPRADE) MESSIER
December 17, 1906 - April 8, 2006

Auburn - Elsie R. (LaPrade) Messier, 99 formerly of Auburn, died Saturday, April 8th in the St. Francis Home, Worcester.

Her husband, Ulderic A. "Pete" Messier died in 1987.

She leaves her daughter, Lorraine F. Scheffler of Worcester; her son, Robert Messier, and his wife Kathleen of Worcester; her brother, Eugene LaPrade of Florida; eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, a great great grandson, 2 step grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren. She also leaves several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Arthur and Edmund LaPrade, and her sisters, Lillian DeCoste, Doris Burnham, Florence LaPrade and Eleanor Dion.

She was born in Auburn, daughter of the late Arthur and Eugenia (Renaud) LaPrade and had lived here all of her life.

Elsie worked for 15r years for the MKM Knitting Company in Leicester, prior to her retirement in 1969.

She was a life long member of St. Joseph's Parish in Auburn, and was the Kitchen Manager for the former St. Joseph's Thrift Shoppe. A gregarious woman, Elsie loved people. She enjoyed the time she spent with them immensely, and her quick wit and spirited nature will be remembered by all who knew her.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Tuesday, April 11th from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. Her funeral will follow with a Mass celebrated at 1 PM in St. Joseph's Church, 189 Oxford St., Auburn. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemeteryc

Robert J. Michalak
May 30, 2006

SHREWSBURY - Robert J. "Bobby" Michalak, 74, of Shrewsbury, died Tuesday, May 30th in the UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester.

He is survived by his 3 brothers, Edward Michalak and his wife Lucy, George Michalak and his wife Barbara, both of Shrewsbury, and Henry Michalak and his wife Alice of Worcester; his sisters, Irene, wife of Ted Gregarczyk of Shrewsbury, and Helene, wife of Bennett Johnson of Worcester; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, John, Pete, Alfred and Walter, and his sisters, Regina Cleveland, Catherine Granger and Theresa Luks.

He was born in Shrewsbury, son of the late Charles and Maryann (Kolodziejczak) Michalak and has lived here all of his life.

Bob retired from Worcester Gear Works, where he had worked for 44 years as a custodian and a materials handler. Many years ago, he served as a call firefighter for the Town of Shrewsbury Fire Department and often played Santa Claus for the fire department Christmas parties. He enjoyed traveling to Disney World and Las Vegas until his illness no longer allowed him to. He then settled for his gardening, growing wonderful tomatoes and flowers. He also enjoyed fishing. Bobby was well loved by all who new him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury on Friday, June 2d from 6-8 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 3rd at 10 AM in St. Anne's Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, followed by burial in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery.

Martha S. (Wahlberg) Miles
MARCH 21, 1943 - APRIL 22, 2007

AUBURN, MA - Martha S. (Wahlberg) Miles, 65, of Marion Ave., died Sunday, April 22nd in the UMass Memorial Healthcare Center, Worcester.

She leaves her loving daughter and son-in-law, Donna H. and Stephen G. Grady of Auburn; her two grandsons, Eric and Ryan Grady of Auburn, and many friends.

Mrs. Miles was born and raised in Worcester, daughter of the late Eric and Helena (Olsen) Wahlberg. She graduated from North High School, Class of 1959 and then the former Worcester Teachers College in 1963. A longtime educator, Mrs. Miles retired in 1999 from the Nipmuc Regional High School, where she had taught math for 32 years. While at school, she served as the Math Department Coordinator and as the National Honor Society advisor. She was a longtime member of the Mendon/Upton Teachers Association, and served as their treasurer. Mrs. Miles also had a long career with the H & R Block Company, where she most recently worked as assistant manager for the area.

Mrs. Miles enjoyed craft projects and crocheting. Her greatest love for the past 15 years has been her two grandsons, who were part of her daily life.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, April 25th from 6-8 PM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. A funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday, April 26th at 10 AM in the funeral. Burial in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester will be private.

Jane C. Miller
February 4, 1928 - December 5, 2006

SHREWSBURY - Jane C. Miller, 78, died Tuesday, December 5, 2006. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Gordon T. Miller, and their three children, daughter Donna M. Barsotti and husband John of Ithaca, NY, daughter Elfreda M. Skidmore and husband Richard of Portland, OR, and son William (Billy) B. Miller of West Hollywood, CA. She also leaves four grandchildren, Rebecca Green, Matthew Green, Brittney Mae Skidmore and James Skidmore; her sister Annette Smith, of Kauai, Hawaii; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stanley and Dora Miller of Paxton; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Elizabeth Austin Church and Leonard Hughes Church, of Shaker Heights OH, and her brother James Church.

Jane graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1945, and went on to Simmons College, where she received a BS in 1949. Following her graduation from college and marriage to Gordon, Jane was employed by Brown Brothers Harriman Financial Institution in Boston. Jane and Gordon moved to the Worcester area in 1950. In the 1960s, Jane was a free-lance writer for the Feature Parade section of the Worcester Sunday Telegram, publishing over 50 articles. Three of her articles were reprinted nationally, one of which was an interview with Esther Goddard (wife of Robert Goddard, father of modern rocketry), which was reprinted in the Congressional Record. Jane was a Senior Trust Officer when she retired from the law firm Bowditch & Dewey in 1996, where she had worked since 1970. During that time she originated a banking bill, which is now law in Massachusetts.

Jane was a member of the First Unitarian Church of Worcester, having served as the clerk, trustee of endowment funds, and was active in many other church activities. She was the former vice president of the Simmons College Alumnae Association and a former president of the Worcester Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She was active with the United Way, serving as a member of the budget committee and the planning council. At the Worcester Country Club she earned the Red Cross 50-mile Swim Certificate and was captain of the Women's Bowling League team.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9th at 10:00 AM at the First Unitarian Church of Worcester, 90 Main Street, Worcester. There are no calling hours. If you wish, contributions can be made to the Elizabeth Austin Church Scholarship Fund at Simmons College, Boston, MA. Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury is assisting the Miller family with arrangements.
