Errol F. "Spike" Simons
January 16, 1922 - November 6, 2006

AUBURN, MA - Errol F. "Spike" Simons, 86, of Pakachoag Village, died Monday in UMass-Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after an illness.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Barbara (Munzert) Simons, and their children; George Simons, and his wife Jean, of Four Oakes, NC, Cathy Tucker and her husband Tony, of Houston, TX, John Simon s and his wife Kathy, of Charlton, Dan Simons, and his wife Robin, of E. Brookfield, and Scott Simons and his wife Darcy, of Spencer. He leaves 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was born in Bradford, VT the son of the late Edward M. and Wenona B. (Moore) Simons.
He was a proud Veteran of WWII. He served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 12th Armored Division, known as the "Hellcats."
He was a big fan of Country and Western Music, and enjoyed camping.

LORENA F. "JANE" (RAU) SIMPSON
November 21, 1918 - September 22, 2007

AUBURN, MA - Lorena F. "Jane" (Rau) Simpson, 88, of Rockland Rd., died Saturday September 22nd in the Lutheran Home of Worcester.

Her husband, George A. Simpson died in 2005.

She leaves her four children, Jane L. Mack and her husband James of Worcester, David E. Swyden of Sacramento, CA, William R. Simpson, II of Auburn, and Elizabeth M. Simpson; eight grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

She was born in Auburn, daughter of the late Elzy and Elizabeth (McDonald) Rau and lived here most of her life. A longtime homemaker, Mrs. Simpson worked for several years at the Aspen Street Rod & Gun Club, Ware. She also had worked for the Harrington Richardson Company, Worcester, where she met her husband.

She enjoyed knitting and cherished the time she spent with her family.

A memorial service celebrating Jane's life will be held on Friday, September 26th at 11 AM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. Family and friends are invited to visit with Jane's family on Friday from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the service.

Werner C. Single
May 15, 1916 - April 16, 2006

SHREWSBURY - Werner C. Single, 89, died peacefully on Sunday, April 16th in his home in Shrewsbury.

He is survived by a niece, Michelle Nelsen of Paxton and his nephew, Eric Single of Toronto, Canada.

Mr. Single was born in Stuttgart, Germany and cam to the United States in 1923. He served in the United States Army during World War II and later attended Columbia University.

Before moving to Shrewsbury in 1996, Mr. Single commuted between his homes in New York and Fort Lauderdale. In 1959, he founded his own import-export reporting business. He was a world traveler, a patron of the arts, a bon vivant and favorite uncle. His life was busy and he lived it well.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in his memory can be made to the Southgate Employee Appreciation Fund, 30 Julio Drive, Shrewsbury, Ma 01545.

GERTRUDE Q. (QUINN) SIPOS
July 2, 1911 - March 8, 2006

AUBURN, MA - Gertrude Q. (Quinn) Sipos, 94, of 10 Wyoma Drive, Auburn, died Wednesday, March 8th in her home after an illness.

Her husband, Emil J. Sipos died in 1974. She leaves her son, William A. Sipos of Auburn, with whom she lived, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, William and Thomas Quinn, and a sister, Catherine Hill.

Mrs. Sipos was born in Worcester, daughter of the late William and Mary (Cotter) Quinn and had lived in Auburn for the past 50 years. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1928 and Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing in 1931. She did additional course work at Boston College and Assumption College.

Gertrude had worked 33 years at Worcester City Hospital as a Nursing Supervisor, retiring in 1976. She previously had taught First Aid Courses for the Red Cross and for the Lincoln Square Girls Club.

She was a member of North American Martyrs Parish in Auburn; a member of the Worcester City Hospital Alumni Association, a member of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Nurses, and the Auburn Senior Center.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Gertrude's family on Friday, March 10th from 5-8 P.M. in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 11th at 10 A.M. in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn. Burial will be in Saint John's Cemetery, Worcester. Memorial contributions may be made to the Auburn District Nursing Association, 191 Pakachoag Street, Auburn, MA 01501 or to the Mohegan Council Boy Scouts of America, 19 Harvard Street, Worcester, MA 01609.

Thomas Charles Skeates
August 8, 1910 - February 5, 2006

WORCESTER - Thomas Charles Skeates, 95, of 42 Swan Ave, a former longtime Auburn resident, died in Radius Healthcare, after an illness.
His wife Enis H. (Upgard) Skeates, died in 2004
He is survived by his daughters, Janice Auger, wife of Bruce, of Worcester, and Carol White, widow of Robert White, of Oxford, 7 grandchildren; Carol Lee Auger, of N. Oxford, Linda M. Jewell, of St. Petersburg, FL, Thomas A. Auger, and his wife, Cheryl, with whom Thomas made his home; Michael A. Auger, and wife Marie, of Westminster, Robert W. White, and his wife Linda, of Dudley, and David P. White, and his fiance, Michelle Broadard, of Webster. He leaves 10 loving Great grandchildren, 2 great, great, grandchildren. Other members of his family include his sister Marjorie A. Usher, of Worcester.
His infant son Kenneth and 2 Brothers, Arthur J. Skeates, and Ernest W. Skeates, and 2 sisters, Pearl Slayton, and Winifred Hockman, all predeceased him.
He was born in Nova Scotia, son of the late Arthur and Jessie (Rampton) Skeates, he was educated in Worcester schools, and he attended South High School.
He worked for the former White and Bagely, in Worcester for many years; he later worked for Kraska Auto parts.
Mr. Skeates was a member of the Teamsters Union.
He was a skilled gardener, he grew the most wonderful Sweet Peas, he also loved to vacation in Provincetown. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be remembered for his kind and loving ways for generations to come.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn on Wednesday from 9:30-11:00 AM a funeral service in the funeral home will follow at 11:00 AM
Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Robert S. Smith
October 22, 1960 - February 2, 2006

AUBURN, MA - Robert S. "Rob" Smith, Sr., 45, of 144 Wallace Avenue, Auburn died peacefully on Thursday, February 2nd at the VNA Hospice House at Coes Pond in Worcester after a long courageous battle with cancer.

He leaves his wife of 24 years, Shirleyann (Stebbins) Smith, his son, Robert S. Smith Jr., 19, his daughter, Alyssa Kay Smith, 15, his parents, John G. and Margaret H. "Sally" (Inglis) Smith of Auburn, his brother, Gordon and his wife, Shellie and their daughter, Kaylie of Denton, Texas. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Shirley Stebbins Sewell of New Brunswick, Canada and many friends and relatives throughout the United States and abroad. Rob graduated from Auburn High School with the Class of 1979.

Rob worked for 11 years as a roofer until taking a position in 1991 at Holy Cross College as a foreman in the Physical Plant Department. He was recognized with the Walter McCann Award and most recently with the Claire Burns Award for his work ethic and devotion to the college community.

He was a life long member of Saint Thomas Episcopal Church of Auburn where he loved his church family deeply and served as a junior warden.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Rob's family on Monday, February 6th from 4-7 P.M. in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 7th at 10 A.M. in Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, 35 School Street, Auburn. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn. Rob asks that instead of flowers, that you attend a church service of your choice in his memory. Memorial contributions can be made to the Junior Wardens Fund, Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, 35 School Street, Auburn, MA 01501 or to the VNA Care Network, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608.

Thomas Smith
March 22, 1918 - April 2, 2006

AUBURN, MA - Thomas Smith, 88, of 11 Carriage Drive, died at home, surrounded by his family, after an illness.
His wife Enis E. (Broman) died in 1986
He is survived by his son Daniel and his wife Sheila, with whom he lived, his daughters; Beverly, wife of the late Gerald S. Pattee, of Oxford, and Audrey and her husband Paul Kosky, of Auburn. Other members of his family include; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, and a sister Marjorie O'Connell, of Worcester.
He was predeceased in death by his brothers; Daniel and Edward Smith and a sister; Agnes Case, and a grandson Gregory Pattee.
He was born in Worcester, son of the late Alexander, and Mary (Surmas) Smith. He was graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School.
Mr. Smith worked as a laborer for Bozenhardt, in Worcester for many years. He had previously worked as a forger for Wyman Gordon Co.
Mr. Smith was an outdoorsman; he enjoyed fishing and was an avid sports fan.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St. on Wednesday from 6-8 P.M.
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday in Park Congregational Church, 80 Russell Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in All Faith Cemetery, Worcester.

JEAN S. (SANFORD) SMITH
June 24, 1907 - April 11, 2006

Charlton - Jean S. (Sanford) Smith, 98, a resident of the Overlook Masonic Healthcare Center and formerly of Auburn and Worcester, died Tuesday April 11th at the home.

Her husband, Harold M. Smith died in 1955.

She leaves her daughter, Sandra S. Simmons of Auburn; her son-in-law, Windsor H. Bigelow, Jr. of Webster; five grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and a great great grandson. She was predeceased by her daughter, Nancy S. Bigelow in 1997.

Mrs. Smith was born in West Brookfield, daughter of the late Fred C. and Maude E. (Eaton) Sanford. She graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School and Miss Neil's Kindergarten Teaching School.

Mrs. Smith taught kindergarten for many years before becoming a teller for the former Worcester County Institute of Savings in Worcester for 16 years.

She was a member of Bethany Christian United Parish in Worcester; was a Past Worthy Matron of the Stella Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Auburn a member of the Clement Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Worcester and the Worcester Women's Club.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Thursday, April 13th at 1:30 PM in the James C. Niccoll Chapel of the Overlook Masonic Healthcare Center, 88 Masonic Home Rd., Charlton. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, West Brookfield. Visitation will be held on Thursday prior to the service from 1-1:30 PM.

Walter E. Sneade
October 16, 1914 - July 11, 2006

SHREWSBURY - Walter E. Sneade, 91, of Shrewsbury, died Tuesday, July 11th in Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Westborough.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Louise H. (Carroll) Sneade; two daughters, Carol A. Morin and her husband, Stanley of Somerset and Margaret M. Call and her husband, Gregory of Greenfield; four grandchildren, Kellyjean Call, Bryan Call, Keith Morin and Marianne Brisson; two great grandchildren, Ryan P. Morin and Ashley Brisson; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Sneade and two sisters, Hazel Huff and Vera Wright.

Mr. Sneade was born in Worcester, son of the late Thomas N. and Clara L. (Corbett) Sneade and had lived in Shrewsbury for over 50 years. He graduated from Gloucester High School and Camden Vocational School both in New Jersey. Walter served his country proudly with the U.S. Army in W.W. II. During the war he was captured twice by the enemy and was a Prisoner of War for some time; he received two bronze stars for his bravery.

Mr. Sneade had worked as a Lab Technician in the Research Lab at Norton Company in Worcester for 49 years before he retired. In his spare time, Walter loved to dabble as a gemologist and had made many fine pieces of jewelry for family and friends.

He was a member of Saint Mary's Parish in Shrewsbury. His other memberships include, being a member of United Commercial Travelers; and a life member of American Ex-Prisoners of War. Walter also enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family summer home on New Silver Beach in Falmouth.

Charles J. Snyder
July 19, 1928 - May 1, 2006

Auburn - Charles J. Snyder, 77, of Auburn, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 2nd.

He leaves his beloved wife of 49 years, Beverly J. (Wolfe) Snyder; his two daughters, Judith A., wife of Robert A. Giles, Jr. of Charlton and Julie A., wife of Dana F. Robbins, Sr. of Thompson; his brother, Robert H. Snyder of Grafton; his three grandchildren, Nicole Giles, Dana F. Robbins, Jr., and Brielle Robbins; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Nancy Ann Snyder in 1958 and his siblings, Mary Ellen Letourneau, George G. Snyder, Margaret A. Krusas, and Jeannette Perreault.

He was born in Worcester, son of the late Robert H. and Anna Margaret (Levesque) Snyder and lived in Auburn for many years. He attended Worcester Boys' Trade School.

Mr. Snyder retired from Coughlin Electric in Worcester, where he had worked as a shipper. Previously, he worked as a traffic manager for Curtis & Marble, Worcester.

He was a member of Saint Catherine of Sweden parish in Worcester and he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn on Thursday, May 4th from 5-8 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM Friday in Saint Catherine of Sweden Church, 1 Wiser Avenue, Worcester. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn.

Gladys M. (Bogart) Soderberg
April 14, 1920 - September 7, 2007

AUBURN, MA - Gladys M. (Bogart) Soderberg, 87, formerly of Auburn, died Friday, September 7th in the Radius Healthcare Center, Worcester.

Her beloved husband, Arthur J. Soderberg died in 1979.

She leaves her daughter, Carol Jones and her husband William of Auburn; her son, John Soderberg of Center Harbor, NH; four grandchildren, Pam Barton and her husband George of Alexandria, VA, Carl Soderberg of Northwood, NH, Kelly Jones of Auburn, and Ian Soderberg of Campton, NH, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Charlotte Giordano, and Evelyn Weill.

She was born in New York City, daughter of the late John M. and Lillian (Leary) Bogart, and had lived in Auburn for 58 years, before moving to Worcester.

Mrs. Soderberg had worked as a key punch operator for Automatic Data Processing, in Auburn for 10 years before she retired. Previously she was a cafeteria worker for the Auburn School Department. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Auburn, where she had taught Sunday school and was a member of its Women's Fellowship group. She enjoyed participating in activities at the Auburn Senior Center, and was involved with the Camp Fire Girls with her granddaughters.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, September 10th from 6-8 PM in Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 11th at 11 AM in the First Congregational Church of Auburn, 128 Central St., Auburn. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn.
