ELEANOR (MESSINA) ZONA
January 10, 1938 - March 17, 2007

Eleanor (Messina) Zona of Shrewsbury, passed away on Saturday, March 17th after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 47 years, John A. Zona; her children, David J. Zona and his wife Marsha of Shrewsbury; Noreen A. Mulcahy and her husband James of Charlton; a brother, Rosario Messina of Worcester; a sister, Marie Dattis of Shrewsbury; also survived by three granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Zona was born, raised and schooled in Worcester. She with her husband later had moved the family to Shrewsbury in 1970.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Eleanor's funeral Mass on Wednesday, March 21st at 12:00 Noon in St. Mary's Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Calling hours for Mrs. Zona will be private.

Minnie M. Smith

BUCKLAND - Minnie Mae (Gleason) Smith, 57, of 6 East Buckland Road died Monday (8-7-06) at home.

She was born May 19, 1949 in Blossburg, PA, the daughter of Frederick and Roseanna (Cenate) Gleason.

Prior to the closing of the Buckland Bar and Grill, she was employed there as a cook and bartender. Previous employment included Bishop Apple Orchard in Shelburne and Vermont Woodshakes.

She was a life member and past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8503 Ladies Auxiliary in Shelburne Falls, as well as a life member of the VFW National Homes.

Minnie enjoyed crocheting.

She was married to Roy C. Smith on May 21, 1991.

Survivors, besides her husband of Buckland and her mother of Van Buren, ME, include one son, Nelson Haley of Buckland; two daughters, Mona Jones of Saxtons River, VT, and Brenda Jones of Bellows Falls, VT; four brothers, Donald Gleason of Van Buren, ME, Harold Gleason of Buckland and Elroy Whidden and Earl Whidden, both of Van Buren; one sister, Roseanna Sisto of Brattleboro, VT; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Edward Haley, predeceased her on Feb. 2, 1997.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls with the Rev. David Neil, pastor of Trinity Church, officiating. Burial will be in North Heath cemetery at the convenience of the family.

There will be a calling hour Wednesday morning from 10 until the time of the service at the funeral home.

It is suggested donations be made to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, in care of Helen Burnap, 41 Water St., Shelburne Falls, MA 01370.

Kenneth A. Mathieu Sr.

WOONSOCKET, RI - Kenneth A. Mathieu, Sr., 80, of 17 Bradford Street, a native of Turners Falls, MA, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at the Fatima Hospital, North Providence, RI.

Graveside services were observed on Monday (7-17-06) from the Union Cemetery, No. Smithfield, RI. Visiting hours were omitted.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 222 Richmond Street, Providence, RI, 02903-4253 Funeral arrangements were provided by the Holt Funeral Home of Woonsocket, RI with local arrangements handled by McCarthy Funeral Homes of Greenfield and Turners Falls, Mass.

Michele M. Drumheller

SHELBURNE - Michele M. (Kane) Drumheller, 52, of Shelburne, died Monday, July 24 at home, after a 13-year battle with metastatic breast cancer.

She was born on Sept. 26, 1953 in Bellows Falls, VT the daughter of Myrtle and the late John Kane. She attended St. Charles School in Bellows Falls and was a 1971 graduate of Bellows Falls High School, in the top 10 of her class. She went on to Burlington, VT for 2 years at Champlain College where she graduated magna cum laude in 1973.

Following college she moved to Boston and worked for the law firm of Hale & Dorr. She then moved to the Springfield area and became the secretary to the radio station manager, Phil Drumheller.

Michele and Phil were married in 1988 and their daughter Laura was born in 1990, Micheles pride and joy.

Michele was the owner and sole proprietor of Sewing Room and Vacuums on Federal St. in Greenfield for the past 23 years. Her illness recently forced her to abruptly close that business that she loved so much. She made many good friendships at her store, from the regular customers and from the sewing classes and clubs that met there. One such group of women sewed comfort caps and these were provided without charge to the Oncology Dept. at Franklin Medical Center for their cancer treatment patients.

The very first year of the Relay For Life (1995) Michele was a member of the Bosom Buddies team and she took great pride in helping the American Cancer Society establish this annual event in Franklin County.

For several years in the 1980s, Michele had a booth for her store (under the old and new grandstands) at the annual Franklin County Fair. Michele purchased her store from the previous owner, Adel Cote, who asked Micheles husband if he knew of someone who might want to buy her store. Michele went to every bank in town, prior to finding one that would loan her the few thousand dollars that she needed to make it happen. After a few years in business, Michele said that it was one of the best decisions she had made in her life. It did bring her much happiness and fulfillment for the 23 years.

In more recent times (2003), Michele became the co-owner (with her husband) of the radio station WIZZ in Greenfield, as the vice president of P&M Radio, LLC.

Michele was an active member of her church, Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield for many years. She served as a First Grade CCD Teacher and as a greeter for the weekly masses.

IN addition to her loving husband Phil and beautiful teenage daughter Laura, she is survived by her mother and step-father John Pellerin of Charlestown, NH, 4 step-children, Michael and Mark of Wilbraham, Paul of East Longmeadow and Marie Wenninger of Ludlow, 4 sisters, Kathy Berg and her husband Bill, of Erie, PA, Kaylee Armstrong and her husband Jeff, of Hotchkiss, CO, Raine Kane and her husband Tom Goldschmid of Westminster, VT, Maureen Langley and her companion Jim Mandeville of White River Junction, VT, 2 brothers, Tommy and his wife Judy Kane, of Bellows Falls, VT and Johnny and his companion Liz Ayers of Northfield, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place Thursday at 9 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church. Rev. Ronald G. Yargeau, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial services will follow in Calvary Cemetery. There will not be a gathering at the funeral home Thursday morning as friends should meet at the church.

Calling hours will be Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St., Greenfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Laura M. Drumheller Scholarship Fund, in care of Greenfield Co-Operative Bank, 63 Federal St., Greenfield MA 01301.

Barbara M. Washer

ORANGE - Barbara M. (Browning) Washer, 88, formerly of Orange, died Monday, Aug. 07, 2006, at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.

She was born in Millers Falls on July 2, 1918, the daughter of James S. and Marguerite (Chamberlain) Browning. She grew up in Millers Falls, graduating from Turners Falls High School in 1936 and from Greenfield Commercial College in 1938. She lived in Turners Falls for 16 years, also living in Florida, New Jersey, the state of Washington and Texas with her husband during his working career. Following his retirement, they moved to Orange where they lived for many years and for the past five years she had resided in Athol.

She was a secretary for several years at the former Millers Falls Paper Co. and for the Northfield Mount Herman School for several years. She was a member of the Central Congregational Church in Orange, serving on several boards and committees including Missions, Womens Fellowship besides working on many church activities. She was an assistant Girl Scout leader for Troop 494 in Turners Falls.

She enjoyed cake decorating, making many cakes for weddings, birthdays, graduations and anniversaries and also enjoyed doing cross stitch.

Her husband of 49 years, Robert Washer, died in 1995.

She leaves a daughter, Pamela B. O'Connor and her husband, Michael, of Swanzey, NH; two grandchildren, Daniel C. and Meghan C. O'Connor, both of Swanzey.

She was predeceased by a brother, Morgan Browning.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at 10 a.m. at Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol, with the Rev. Natalie Maynard, interim pastor of Central Congregational Church of Orange, officiating. Burial will follow in Northfield Farms cemetery in Northfield.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Central Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 93 South Main St., Orange, MA 01364.

Anna L. Lane

Petersham - Anna L. (Herndon) Lane, 86, of 23 North Main Street died Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at her home.

Anna was born in Luray, Virginia on October 4, 1921, the daughter of Cecil T. and Margaret (Propes) Herndon. She grew up in Virginia and West Virginia, graduating from Charlestown High School in 1939. She attended Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. She later moved to Somerville for a few years, moving to Sudbury in 1954 and since 1986 has resided in Petersham

Anna worked at the Want ADvertiser in Sudbury for over 20 years, being one of the first employees. She had previously worked at the Newton D. Baker U.S. Army Hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia, the Veteran's Administration in Boston and W.P.A. teaching typing.

Anna was a former member of the Memorial Congregational Church in Sudbury, the Orthodox Congregational Church in Petersham and was currently a member of the Central Congregational Church in New Salem. She was also a member of the Petersham Craft Center for several years and the Petersham Branch Alliance. Anna was one who always enjoyed writing and receiving notes from friends. She also enjoyed antiquing, gardening, and being one of the original founders of the Sudbury Garden Club. She had many pets through the years and was always very concerned about animal welfare.

She leaves her husband of 60 years, Robert M. Lane; a daughter, Bobbi (Lane) Benson and her husband Chip of Concord and her many friends. She was predeceased by a brother, Harry T. Herndon.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, July 29, 2008, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. at Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. Chris Raker, pastor of the Central Congregational Church of New Salem, officiating. A private family burial will be held at East Street cemetery in Petersham. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the MSPCA, 350 South Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130.

Michael K. St.Onge

Royalston - Michael K. St.Onge, 60, of 64 Athol-Richmond Road, died Sunday, February 14, 2010 at the Athol Memorial Hospital after being stricken ill at his home.

Michael was born in Huntington, California, February 1, 1950, the son of Walter H. and Therese (Bourgess) St.Onge. While growing up he lived in many places, including Japan, Lybia, London, Missouri, California and Massachusetts as his father was in the Military. He graduated from Chicopee Comprehensive High School in 1968. He lived in Leominster for many years and for the past 20 years has resided in Royalston.

Michael served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and also served with the Massachusetts National Guard for 10 years. He worked for the L.S. Starrett Company for many years, and prior to his retirement he was the head of the Securatis Security Company working at Starretts. He was an EMT for the Montachusett Ambulance in Fitchburg for several years.

He was very involved in music and theater all of his life, active in many local minstrel shows, the Barre Players Theater, along with playing at several area coffee shops. He also composed his own music, and played the guitar. He was a member of Central Congregational Church was a great game player, enjoyed camping, visiting many places in the U.S. and Canada, was an avid Red Sox fan, a former coach and Board of Director, serving on the Chuck Stone Little League. He served on the cemetery Commission for the Town of Royalston for several years. Besides Michael's music and theatre he enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.

Michael leaves his wife of 25 years, Dorena Stewart-St.Onge; two sons, Marc Winer and his wife Michelle of Agawam, and Joshua Winer and his companion Michele Judge of Philadelphia, PA; a daughter, Caissie Debenham and her husband Matthew of West Port, CT; four grandchildren, Eli and Lincoln Debenham, and Mara and Michael Winer. He also leaves three brothers, Geoffrey St.Onge and his wife Pamela of Fitchburg, Tim St.Onge and his wife Lisa of Baldwinville, and John St.Onge and his wife Rosemary of Leominster; two sisters, Lisa Puntillo of Fitchburg and Tina Virkler and her husband Don of Gardner. He also leaves his mother and father-in-law Dot and Ken Stewart of Royalston and many nieces and nephews and many grand nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services with military honors will be held Thursday, February, 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Central Congregational Church, 93 South Main Street, Orange, with the Rev. Megan Leary, pastor officiating. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, February 17, 2010 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol. Burial will be in the spring at Maple cemetery in Royalston. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Barre Players Theater, Inc., P.O. Box 279, Barre, MA 01005.

Sandra M. Brown

GREENFIELD - Sandra M. (Rowland) Brown, 57, formerly of 63 James Street, a resident of the Poets Seat Health Care Center, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, with her loving family at her side, following a period of declining health due to multiple sclerosis.

Sandra was born in Greenfield on Feb. 5, 1949, to Harland and Arlene (Walsh) Rowland. She attended Holy Trinity Parochial School and Greenfield Public Schools. Sandra was a lifelong resident of Greenfield.

In 1979, Sandra worked with Sylvia Curtis to start up a local group for people suffering from multiple sclerosis. Sandra had been diagnosed with MS and Mrs. Curtis sister was also afflicted. As a result of these efforts, the Western New England Multiple Sclerosis Group was born.

Sandra became the president of the group and testified before the Franklin/Hampshire Area Service Planning Team to make them aware of our needs. Less than one month later, the charter was formed.

Sandra was a member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church of Greenfield, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed many activities including dancing with her husband, Robert, cooking and baking pastries, taking long walks, camping, gardening and spending time with her family and friends.

She married her husband, Robert E. Brown, on April 3, 1964 and they celebrated 42 years of marriage together.

Survivors include, in addition to her loving husband, her daughter, Leasa Brown, and her fiancé, John Roberts, of Belchertown; her sons, Basil of Jacksonville, VT, and Kevin of South Deerfield. Survivors include her four grandchildren: Alaina, Kolby and Kaleb Brown and Zachary Gexler. She leaves her three sisters: Kathy Dwyer and her husband, John Jack, of Greenfield; Ailene Mador and her husband, David, of Greenfield and Susan Jasmin and her husband, Richard, of Turners Falls, and several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

The Brown family will receive guests tonight, Aug. 10, 2006, from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, from 6 to 8.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family following cremation, with rites of committal to take place in the Green River cemetery with Rev. Arthur Warner, interim pastor of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, to officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to either the Salvation Army, P.O Box 346, 72 Chapman St., Greenfield, MA 01302-0346 or to Poets Seat Health Care Center, c/o the Residents Activity Fund, 359 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

The McCarthy Funeral Homes of Greenfield and Turners Falls have been entrusted with the arrangements.

Charlotte E. Prouty

ORANGE - Charlotte E. (Hall) Prouty, 86, of 106 Harrison Ave., died on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 9, 2006, at home, following an illness.

Born in Erving on Feb. 10, 1920, she was a daughter of Ralph S. and Daisy (Purrington) Hall, and grew up in Erving

Following school, she had worked at Erving Paper Mills as a bookkeeper and also had worked at the former James D. Kimball Insurance Co., as well as the former Fleetwood Nursing Home, now known as Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.

Charlotte enjoyed knitting and sewing and had been a member of the Erving Congregational Church and the Orange Senior Citizens Club.

Survivors include her daughter, Sharman Prouty of Orange; several nephews, nieces and cousins, and her beloved beagle, "Nipper."

Charlotte was predeceased by her former husband, Dana H. Prouty, in 1999 and a son, Alan Prouty, in 1997.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the Erving Center Cemetery, Route 2 and Mountain Road, Erving. The Rev. Natalie Maynard, interim minister of the Orange Central Congregational Church, will officiate.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Perkins School for the Blind, 175 North Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02472, or to the Gardner VNA, 32 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440.

Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., is directing the arrangements.
