Chester P. Baranowski

GREENFIELD - Chester P. Baranowski, 73, of 6 Cherry Lane died Thursday (2-14-08) at home.

He was born in Montague on Oct. 7, 1934, the son of Joseph and Jennie (Rutkowski) Baranowski. He attended local schools in Gill and Montague and had been a longtime resident of Greenfield.

Chet was employed in the maintenance department at the Franklin Medical Center for 30 years, retiring in 2000.

He served in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War and attained the rank of sergeant.

He was a member of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks and was a former Little League coach.

Chet enjoyed all Boston sports and loved all animals. Also, he enjoyed his home, garden, playing cards and bowling.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, the former Barbara P. Peace; a son, Joshua Sinclair of Pittsfield, Maine; a daughter, Bjarni Thomas of New Sharon, Maine; nine grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Catherine "Kay" Baranowski of Greenfield, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Monday at 8:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 in Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Czestochowa cemetery in Turners Falls.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Lucien M. Desbien

TEWKSBURY - Lucien "Buddy" M. Desbien, 63, of Tewksbury, formerly of Turners Falls, died Wednesday (2-13-08) at the Tewksbury Hospital.

He was born in Montague on Oct. 24, 1943, the son of Lucien P. and Blanche (Swinko) Desbien. He graduated from Turners Falls High School in 1961 and then received his bachelor of arts degree from Springfield College. He had been a longtime resident of Turners Falls.

Buddy was a salesman for the Eastern Fine Paper Co. until 1994.

He had been a town coordinator for the Town of Montague and served on the Finance Committee.

He was a member of the Turners Falls Rotary Club.

Buddy was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing and golfing.

Besides his father of Millers Falls, he leaves a brother, Philip J. Desbien and his wife Kathleen Carroll of Turners Falls; a sister, M. Georgianna Provost and her husband John Jr. of Turners Falls, and two nephews, Thomas Bergin and Eric Desbien.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Turners Falls, with the Rev. Charles DiMascola, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

A calling hour at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls, will be Saturday, Feb. 23 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Massachusetts General Hospital, in care of Dept. of Neurology, East Building 114, Suite 201, 114 16th St., Charlestown, MA 02129.

William H. O'Neil III

VISTA, Calif. - William H. O'Neil III, 72, of 2013 Courage St., formerly of Greenfield, Mass., died Saturday (2-9-08) at the Tri City Medical Center in Oceanside.

He was born in Northampton on Feb. 19, 1935, the son of William H. Jr. and Ethelyn (Bernard) O'Neil. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1953 and was a graduate of El Camino Community College.

While in Greenfield, he was employed by the former John Bonk service station and the First National Store.

In 1954, he married the former Joanne Rice and they moved to California in 1955.

Bill was employed by Honeywell for 49 years, retiring as a manufacturing manager in 2004.

He was a car buff and was into NASCAR racing.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, the former Marsha Maguire; his children, Bonnie Zamora, William H. O'Neil IV, Bruce and Bryan O'Neil and Jeff Pool; his grandchildren, Aaron, Andrew and Alex Zamora, William H. O'Neil V, Casey, Allison and Chantelle O'Neil and Samantha, Taylor and Jonathan Pool; a sister, Patricia Feldman and her husband Edwin Sr. of Greenfield; a nephew, Edwin Feldman Jr. and his wife Ruth of Boston and a niece, Taunette Greene and her husband Corey and their son Corey of Greenfield.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St. Burial will follow in Green River Cemetery, both in Greenfield.

A calling hour will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Helen J. Hoynoski

GREENFIELD - Helen J. (Zachlowski) Hoynoski, 87, of 83 Washington St. died Wednesday (2-6-08) at the Buckley Health Care Center.

She was born in Greenfield on May 21, 1920, the daughter of Walter and Dominica (Parda) Zachlowski. She graduated from Greenfield High School in 1938. She was a lifelong resident of Greenfield.

Following graduation, she was employed at the Growers Outlet and also helped her sister and brother-in-law at the Mascot Farm Stand in Deerfield.

She was married to Marcel "Motzy" T. Hoynoski on July 5, 1941 while he was on leave, serving as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII. He predeceased her on Feb. 20, 1988.

Helen was employed by the former A&P; Grocery Store for over 37 years. She was a wrapper in the meat department and loved giving lollipops to children that came into the store. Also, she helped newlyweds find a niece piece of meat and proceeded to tell them how to cook it and gained many new customers and lifelong friends.

She helped at the annual church bazaar at the former Sacred Heart Church and was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church. She attended monthly Mass at the nursing home along with the Rosary.

Helen was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary.

She loved playing cards and bingo. She would always send cards and letters to people she knew were homebound or in a nursing home to cheer them up. She was an avid Yankees fan and loved spending time with her family and friends.

She leaves two daughters, Marcella and Barbara Hoynoski of Greenfield; a son, Robert and his wife Barbara of Turners Falls; two sisters, Stella Peterson and Jessie Gamelin of Greenfield; two grandsons, Christopher M. Hoynoski and his wife Kim of Shelburne Falls and Jeffrey A. Hoynoski and his wife Seana of Turners Falls; four great-grandchildren, the love of her life, Jamie, Seth, Abigail and Samuel, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Jennie Kownacki, and a brother, Chester Zachlowski.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 in Holy Trinity Church with the Rev. Abbot Damien Thompson, family member of Abbey of Gethesemi of Trappist, Ky., officiating. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home are tonight from 5 to 8.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Church Renovation Fund, 133 Main St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Robert F. Casey

Greenfield, MA - Robert F. Casey Sr., 84, formerly of 10 Congress St., died Thursday 1-31-08 at the Buckley Health Care Center.

He was born in South Boston on February 26, 1923, the son of Thomas and Catherine (Davern) Casey. He graduated from Boston Latin High School and received his A.B. Degree from Brown University and his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts. He had been a resident of Greenfield since 1950.

Bob was an educator and administrator in the Greenfield School System from 1950 until his retirement in 1986. He started at Greenfield High School as an English teacher, and served as a Guidance Counselor and also Principal of GHS. Bob also held the positions of Director of Pupil Personnel Services and the Director of Special Education during his tenure in the School System.

Bob served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church.

He was a former member of the Town Government Committee, a Town Meeting member, a Library Trustee and a Greenfield Community College Trustee.

His wife of 54 years, the former Pauline (Polly) M. Ament predeceased him in April 2006.

Survivors include a son, Robert F. Jr. of Castleton, VT., three daughters, Kathleen Casey and her husband Michael Fuller of Northampton, Maureen Casey and her husband Jack McKenzie of Greenfield, and Patricia Saraiva and her husband Edward of Needham, a sister, Catherine Pimental and her husband Arthur of South Weymouth, 2 sisters in-law, Dorothy Momaney and her husband Ernest of Montague and Rose Casey of Northboro and seven beloved grandchildren, Mary Catherine, Ross, Michael, Megan, Rebecca, Mark, and Keith, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Jim Casey, a brother, Thomas Casey and a sister, Bernadine Galgani.

Bob was an avid tennis player, a lifelong Red Sox fan, enjoyed reading and having philosophical discussions with family, friends and colleagues. He took great pleasure in his children and grandchildren, and in the many students he knew throughout his years in the Greenfield School System.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Robert F. Casey Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Greenfield Savings Bank, 400 Main St., Greenfield, MA. 01301.

Andrew T. Conti

Greenfield, MA - Andrew T. Conti, 84 of 34 Meadow Wood Dr., died peacefully Tuesday (1/29/08) at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center, after a long battle with multiple myeloma.

He was born in Pittsfield, MA on May 20, 1923 the son of Angelo and Filomena (Renzi) Conti. He graduated early in his senior year from Pittsfield High School in 1942 to enlist in the US Marine Corps. He served in WWII in British Guinea. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946 he moved to Greenfield where he and Dominic Musacchio, his friend and business partner of many years founded the Greenfield Open Air Market at 39 Main St. Known for it's wonderful fruit and vegetables it eventually evolved as a premier retail wholesale flower establishment which continues today with the Musacchio family.

Retiring from the Open Air Market in 1979 Andy soon realized retirement was not for him. What started as a small retirement hobby of working with wood in 1981 eventually became Andy's Pine Shop on Deerfield St. He enjoyed making and selling wooden products and meeting and greeting the public. Because of his keen business sense Andy saw his hobby grow into what is today Andy's, The Oak Shoppe and Homespun by Andy's.

He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church.

Conti was a member of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks #1296, the Knights of Columbus and UNICO for many years. He was a member of the Yankee Car Club and truly enjoyed driving his 1930 Model A car.

He was predeceased by his wife Raesheda Ziter in 1950 and by his wife of 50 years Nellie Ambrose in 2001.

He leaves his wonderful wife of six years Ethel Speranzo Conti, six loving daughters, Gloria Easton and her husband Richard of Shelburne, Teresa Conti of Greenfield, Mary Conti Leger and her husband Joseph of Hooksett, NH, Angela Conti and her husband Brian Shebell of Turners Falls, Patricia Conti of Hyannis and Kathleen James and her husband Benjamin of Lawrenceburg, KY. He also leaves a brother, Anthony Conti of Fort Meyers, FL, ten loving grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:15am from the Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St. followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am in Holy Trinity Church with the Monsignor Ronald G. Yargeau, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Friday from 5pm-8pm at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baystate Franklin Medical Center c/o Oncology Dept. 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301 or to Holy Trinity Church 133 Main St., Greenfield, MA 01301
