Robert W. Mullen

TURNERS FALLS - Robert 'Moon' W. Mullen, 75, of 9 Sunrise Terrace died Monday (1/21/08) at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH after a period of failing health.

He was born in Biddeford, Maine, on May 9, 1932, the son of Joseph and Frances (Campbell) Mullen. He was raised and educated in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

He was employed for many years as a union Pipe fitter helping to build the Alaskan Pipeline, Turners Falls Dam, Northfield Mountain Project, along with various other projects at Seabrook and Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plants. He retired in 1998.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era.

He was an honest, loving, generous, thoughtful Dad, Grampa, brother, uncle, and friend. He was an avid reader who enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening and Maine Italian sandwiches. He was a fan of the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and college basketball.

He was a member of the Montague Lodge of Elks, St Kaziemerz and St Stanislaus Societies & Local 104.

He is survived by his sons Wayne Mullen and his wife Wendy of Turners Falls, and Richard Mullen of Charlemont; four daughters, Celina Waryasz and her husband Chet of Goffstown, NH, Dawn Mullen and her finance Anthony Muollo and Deborah Mullen of Revere, and Maria Morse and her husband Stanley of North Concord, VT; a sister Mary Miller of Maplewood, NJ; a brother Paul Mullen and his wife Sharon of Indianapolis, Indiana; eleven grandchildren, Nicolas and Amanda Waryasz, Brandon Horta, Cameron Lail, Michael and Joseph Mullen, Violet and Emerald Guerra, William, Autumn, and Grace Morse; a great-granddaughter, Lacey Horta; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, James Mullen in 2006.

Services will be held Saturday at 9:15am from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am in Our Lady of Peace Church with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Springdale Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Friday from 4pm-7pm. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Alaska Conservation Foundation, 441 West 5th Ave #402, Anchorage, AK 99501 (www.akcf.org) or the charity of one's choice.

Mary 'Gert' Juraszek

TURNERS FALLS - Mary "Gert" (Treml) Juraszek, 86, of 67 Crocker Ave., died Tuesday (3-11-08) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

She was born in Turners Falls on Aug. 1, 1921, the daughter of Edward and Hannah (Lynch) Treml. She graduated from Turners Falls High School and had been a lifelong resident of Turners Falls.

Gert was employed by the Greenfield Tap & Die Corp. for 40 years, retiring as an office clerk in 1979.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church.

Gert enjoyed painting, quilting, needlepoint, crafts and traveling.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Stanley M. Juraszek, and several nieces and nephews.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

A calling hour will be Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Peace Church Renovation Fund, c/o of Rev. Aksamit, 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls, MA 01376.

Mildred C. Gaida

GILL - Mildred "Nanny" C. (Novak) Gaida, 80, of 4 Gaida Drive died Monday (3-10-08) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

She was born in Montague on Sept. 20, 1927, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Mikrut) Novak. She attended Turners Falls High School and had been a resident of Turners Falls prior to moving to Riverside, Gill, in 1960.

Nan was employed by Bill's Restaurant in Greenfield for 46 years, retiring as kitchen manager/executive chef in 1990.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church in Turners Falls.

Nan was a volunteer for Franklin County Home Care Corp. and was a member of the Citizens Advisory Board, as well as a Nutrition Project Council member.

She was the recipient of the Lifetime Membership Award by the Montague Elks Auxiliary.

Nanny enjoyed cooking and flower gardening.

Her husband, Theodore W. Gaida, predeceased her in 1998.

Survivors include a son, Charles J. of Gill; a daughter, Nancy C. Holland of Shelburne Falls; three granddaughters, Lamia and Annalin Holland and Elka Walter; two great-grandsons, Elijah Holland and Liam Walter, and many nieces and nephews.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Turners Falls.

Marguerite A. Merrigan

Greenfield, MA - Marguerite A. (McKillop) Merrigan, 81, of 48 Congress Street, Greenfield, Massachusetts died at home early Sunday morning, March 9, 2008, with her loving family, at her side.

She was born October 26, 1926 in Belchertown, Massachusetts to Michael and Anna (Falvey) McKillop. She was one of nine children.

She attended schools in Belchertown and graduated in 1946 from Belchertown High School. She also attended Deerfield High School while living in South Deerfield with her sister, Helen, and husband, Raymond L. Merrigan, to assist with their children while he served in the military during World War II.

While living with her sister in South Deerfield, Marguerite met her future husband, Thomas W. Merrigan, whom she married April 19, 1948, in St. Francis Church, Belchertown. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary next month.

During her early years in Greenfield, Mrs. Merrigan worked in the bookkeeping department of Wilson's Department Store. She and her husband established Merrigan Real Estate in the early 1970's and when the youngest of her eight children reached high school age, she ran for and was elected to the office of Greenfield Collector-Treasurer, serving in that office for 12 years. She subsequently returned to the family real estate agency which she conducted with her children before finally retiring in the 1990's.

Her proudest role in life was as the mother of eight children whom she loved with extraordinary affection along with 28 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Four of her children and their families live in the immediate neighborhood and it was a delight for her to welcome daily all her many extended family members into the large Merrigan home on Congress Street, especially at holiday time for large family gatherings. She also enjoyed many opportunities for winter vacation trips with her husband to Florida where they would be joined by visiting children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Merrigan is survived by her husband, Thomas W. Merrigan, and their eight children: Patricia J. Merrigan, Thomas T. Merrigan and his wife Margaret, Maureen T. Winseck and her husband Edward, Nancy E. Hawkins and her husband Robert, Kathleen M. Niedbala, John F. Merrigan and his wife Martina, all of Greenfield, Marguerite A. Merrigan and her spouse Melinda Shaw, of Florence, Massachusetts, and James M. Merrigan and his wife Mary of Hull, Massachusetts. Mrs. Merrigan also leaves her sister, Alice Harrington of Holden, Massachusetts and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, with Monsignor Ronald G. Yargeau, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery

Calling hours will be at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal Street, Greenfield, Tuesday, March 11, 2008, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway Street, Greenfield, or the charity of one's choice.

Viola D. Bednarczyk

GREENFIELD - Viola D. (Keenan) Bednarczyk, 83, of 18 Solon St., died Saturday (3-8-08) at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Brattleboro, Vt.

She was born in Londonderry, Vt. on July 3, 1924, the daughter of Eugene and Viola (Chartier) Keenan.

Viola was a private home-care giver for many years until her retirement in 1989. Previously, she was employed by Smith and Wesson in Springfield.

She was a communicant of the former Sacred Heart Church.

Viola loved bingo and enjoyed crocheting.

Her husband, Walter Bednarczyk, pre-deceased her in 1989.

Survivors include two sons, Lewis "Harry" Slade of Vernon, Vt., and Christopher Slade and his wife, Lucinda, of Greenfield; four grandchildren, Brandy Brow, Travis, Eric and Justin Slade; two step-grandchildren, Dustin Brown and Jamie Davidson; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by a brother, Jack Keenan who was killed in action in World War II, and by a sister, Dorothy Holland.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St.

Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.

A calling hour will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Marguerite E. Reed

GREENFIELD - Marguerite E. (Morse) Reed of 23 Laurel St. died Wednesday (3-5-08) at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born in Woodstock, Vt., the daughter of Carl R. and Sarah C. (Clough) Morse. She attended local schools in Rutland, Vt., and was a graduate of Rutland High School. She received her nursing degree from Methodist Episcopal Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Marguerite was a registered nurse for the former Farren Memorial Hospital in Montague City for over 26 years, retiring in 1985.

She was a member of Robbins Memorial Church and its Ladies Aid. Also, she served on the Diaconate and was a member of the Board of Trustees.

She was a member of the John F. Harrington VFW Post 417 Ladies Auxiliary.

Marguerite enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafts and was an avid reader.

Her husband, Sidney I. Reed Jr., predeceased her on Feb. 11, 1983.

Survivors include two daughters, Sydney I. Snow and her husband Kevin of Bernardston and Linda J. Allis and her husband Richard of Leyden; seven grandchildren, Carla and Calvin Brown, Hilary Snow, Nick, Sam and Ben Allis and Sydney Freeman; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held in Riverside cemetery in Woodstock, Vt., in the spring.

There are no calling hours.

Following the regular 10 a.m. service on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Robbins Memorial Church, a reception will be held in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Robbins Memorial Church, 59 Munson St., P.O. Box 3167, Greenfield, MA 01302 or to the Pioneer Valley Humane Society, P.O. Box 786, Greenfield, MA 01302.

Kostanski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Karen M. Fisette

STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine - Karen M. (Sibley) Fisette, 59, of Stockton Springs, formerly of Turners Falls, Mass., died Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine after a valiant struggle with cancer. She passed peacefully with family by her side and with grace, dignity, and her faith in God.

She was born March 18, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY, and was the daughter of George and Evelyn (Adamson) Sibley, who predeceased her. Karen was raised in Lake Pleasant, MA, and graduated from Turners Falls High School. She also graduated from the college of Saint Elizabeth in New Jersey. Karen lived in several states, i.e., NY, MA, NJ, PA, VA, IA, VT and ME.

She had an interesting variety of employment ranging from second grade school teacher to several accounting positions.

Karen enjoyed travel, golf, bridge, reading, dancing, teddy bears, cross country skiing, laughter, family, friends, and life. She knew how to light up a room and will be greatly missed.

She and Michael had retired to the Maine coast a couple years ago. A recent cross-country road trip was an example of their fun.

Karen leaves behind her loving husband of 39 plus years, Michael Fisette. She also leaves her brother, George Sibley and his wife Gail Stark; Michael's parents, Marceline and George Fisette, several nieces and nephews and many friends.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls.

Calling hours will be Monday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Highland cemetery in Millers Falls in the spring.
