Marilyn J. Gemmell Nanartonis

Greenfield, MA - Marilyn J. (Barrise) Gemmell Nanartonis, 74, of 15 Leonard St., died peacefully on Monday (3/3/08) at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility with her daughters by her side.

Marilyn was born on July 18, 1933 in Deerfield, MA the daughter of Samual and Jean M. (Kuznier) Pudlo Barrise. Marilyn attended local schools and graduated for Greenfield High School in 1951.

After graduation she enlisted in the US Air Force. She received basic training in San Antonio, TX, attended clerk-typist school at F.W. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY. She was then assigned to cryptographer school at Scott AFB in Illinois. She was assigned to Walker AFB in New Mexico and then to Camp Lindsay in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Marilyn's husband Lt. Col. Connie Nanartonis died on December 2, 2002. During their marriage they were totally involved with the WWII Glider Pilots Association and attended many glider functions in the United Sate and Europe.

Marilyn worked in civilian capacity at Wright-Patterson AFB, in Dayton, OH, Keflavic Airport, Iceland and Andrews AFB in Maryland. She finished her government career with 26 years at the Veteran Administration Hospital in Northampton, MA retiring in December 1988.

Marilyn also became an Air National Guardsman in April 1974 in the 104 TWF at Barnes Municipal Airport in Westfield, MA retiring in July 1993 with the rank of Master Sergeant. While at Barnes she twice received the Outstanding NCO of the year from the MSS Squadron, several unit awards, the Occupation Ribbon from Germany and NDSM.

After retirement, in 1994, Marilyn started Marilyn's Collectables & Used Furniture store in Greenfield and was in business for 13 years.

Marilyn was a life member of the VFW Post 8006, Florence, MA American Legion Post 81, Air Force Sergeants Association, Massachusetts National Enlisted Guard Association, Auxiliary Member of the Air Force Officers Association, a life member of the DVAA and participated in many art exhibits.

Marilyn enjoyed painting, exhibiting her art, gardening, crafts and attending flea markets and auctions.

Marilyn leaves two daughters, Laurie J. Gemmell of Hornell, NY and Ann M. Hall of Northampton, MA, three grandchildren, Christopher Hall of Greenfield, Candice J. Hall of Northampton and Jonathan L. D'Apice of Hornell, NY, a great granddaughter, Allysa Madison-Jean Hall of Greenfield and a brother Joseph M. Barrise of Greenfield.

Funeral services will be held on Friday (3/7/08) at 1pm at Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St. in Greenfield, MA. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Thursday (3/6/08) from 4pm-8pm at the funeral home.

Barbara J. Bovat

BERNARDSTON - Barbara J. (Bugbee) Bovat, 73, of 75 South St., formerly of Greenfield, died Monday (3-3-08) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

She was born in Putney, Vt., on July 7, 1934, the daughter of Julian and Mildred (Copeland) Bugbee. She graduated from Greenfield High School in 1952. She had been a longtime resident of Greenfield prior to moving to Bernardston in 1997.

Barbara owned and operated Family Day Care in Greenfield for 28 years, retiring in 1997. Also, she was employed part-time for The Recorder for many years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Greenfield.

Barbara was a member of the Women of the Moose and the Academy of Friendship.

She enjoyed knitting numerous items for Warm the Children.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Kenneth E. Bovat; a son, Gregory A. and his wife Margaret of Groton, CT; a daughter, Wendy R. Wiles and her husband Norman of Bernardston; a sister, Ida Porter of Greenfield; four grandchildren, Kenneth and Amie Birch and Charles and Todd Titus; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Alfonso; a sister-in-law, Ramona Phillips of Greenfield, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., Greenfield, with the Rev. Will Seals, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Warm the Children, c/o Jane Kane, P.O. Box 1367, Greenfield, MA 01302.

John Joseph Mackin, Sr.

GREENFIELD - John Joseph Mackin Sr. 98, of 56 Silver St. passed on peacefully, at home, on Monday (3-3-08).

He was born in Millers Falls on Aug. 31, 1909, the son of John and Sarah (Cosgrove) Mackin.

He married the former Annah Agnes Flynn on July 8, 1946 in St John's Catholic Church, Millers Falls.

Mr. Mackin was a graduate of Turners Falls High School and Catholic University, Washington, D.C.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Casablanca, Morocco.

Mr. Mackin was associated with the family business throughout his life, beginning as a boy in the wood, coal, ice and livery operations of his father. He served as U.S. Postmaster in Millers Falls for 39 years, a position in which he took great pride.

He was a strong supporter of St. John's Church and the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life and a member of several civic organizations. Along with his children he enjoyed horseback riding, days spent at their camp on Lake Mattawa in Orange, and especially loved being entertained by, at first, his brood of grandchildren, and later the antics of his great- grandchildren.

After his retirement, he and his wife Annah, enjoyed many seasons in Winter Garden, Fla., where they followed the Red Sox and were active in the Community Pantry.

Mr. Mackin was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Sarah Katherine Mackin, Mary Margaret "Peg" Finn and her husband, Tab, and brothers James P. and Peter C. Mackin.

Survivors include his wife and four children: John Jr. and wife Barbara of Greenfield, Tim and wife Ellen of North Grafton, Michael of Turners Falls and MaryEllen of Gill; 10 grandchildren: Shaun Mackin and wife Diana of Canton, CT, Sarah Mackin and her husband Luis Castillo of Madrid, Spain, Kristyn Burke and her husband Rick of Waltham, Christopher Mackin and his wife Theresa of Auburn, Kyle Mackin of Worcester, Melanie Burnett and her husband Mark of Erving, Jillian Betters and her husband Ryan of Erving, Josiah Mackin of Turners Falls, Kelly Annah Brown of Falmouth, ME, Amanda Mackin Brown of Stoneham, and 11 great-grandchildren: Caleb, Mackenzie, Donovan, Colin and Erin Mackin; Alba and Alex Castillo-Mackin; Jakob, Dylan and Cameron Burnett and Brayden Mackin McCord. John is also survived by his sister-in-law, Helen Louise Dooley Mackin of Gill; nieces, Mary Finn Lawler, Kathleen "Cappy" Finn Smith, Sarah Finn Kelley, Betty Finn Getz and Theresa Finn Scoggins, and nephews, John Mackin Finn and Daniel Finn.

John was particularly grateful for the support of his family, friends and Father Dennis. He had a special appreciation and connection with Ramona and "his girls" from Comprehensive, especially Sara and Ellie. They all made his last few years that much better with their genuine care and attention.

Services will be held on Saturday (3-8) at 9:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's cemetery in Turners Falls.

Calling hours will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Henry C. Becklo

GREENFIELD - Henry C. Becklo, 88, of Greenfield died Monday (3-3-08) at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Leeds.

He was born in Greenfield on Dec. 7, 1919, the son of Alexander and Caroline (Drewnisny) Becklo. He was a graduate of Greenfield High School and had been a longtime resident of Greenfield.

Henry was employed as a machinist for the Greenfield Tap & Die Corp. for 30 years, retiring in 1972.

He served with the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of War during World War II.

He was a member of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks and the Country Club of Greenfield.

Henry enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.

His wife, the former Anna (Bergeron) Siano Becklo, predeceased him in 2005.

Survivors include two sons, Carl H. of Richmond, N.H., and Michael D. and his wife Francine Bouley of Sunderland; a daughter, Lori Hanley and her husband James of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Helen Wesolowski of Greenfield; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services, all in Turners Falls, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery.

A calling hour at the funeral home will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to time of service.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund, 300 Arnold Palmer Blvd., Norton, MA 02766.

John F. Jurek

TURNERS FALLS - John "Jake" F. Jurek, 76, of 10 Chester St., died Wednesday (4-16-08) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

He was born in Montague City on April 18, 1931, the son of Otto and Mary (Conway) Jurek. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1949. He had been a resident of Turners Falls since 1961.

Jake was an electrician for Kennametal (GTD) for over 25 years, retiring in 1996.

He served with the U.S. Navy in Korea and attained the rank of Mineman 3rd Class.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church.

Jake had been a coach for the Franklin County Hockey Association and also the Newt Guilbault Little League.

Jake enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, the former Eileen R. Welcome; four sons, Tim and his wife Deb of Chippewa, WI, Tom and his wife Mary-Ellen of Virginia Beach, VA, Brian and his wife Jeanine of Hebron and Jim and his wife Rhonda of Montague; eight grandchildren, Austin, Alex, Justin, Andrew, Rachel, Avery, Jada and Jacob Jurek, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, William and Robert Jurek.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Springdale Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square.

John H. Hall

GREENFIELD - John H. Hall, 53, formerly of Bernardston Road, died Tuesday (4-15-08) at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in Calvary cemetery with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, officiating.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1943.

Ann R. Lutz

GREENFIELD - Ann R. (Delmolino) Vigneault Lutz, 84, formerly of Overland Road, died Sunday (4-13-08) at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility.

She was born in Sheffield on Dec. 7, 1923, the daughter of Ralph and Rose Delmolino. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from North Adams State College and her Master's Degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts. She had been a resident of Greenfield most of her life.

Ann was an elementary school teacher in the Greenfield Public School System for over 30 years. Following retirement, she taught at Bement for five years.

She enjoyed chip and putt and bowling.

Her husband, George Lutz, predeceased her in 2005.

Survivors include a son, David Vigneault and his wife Pam of Bentonville, AR; a daughter, Donna Burnham of Greenfield; four grandchildren, Ryan, Jeffrey, Julie and Corinne; three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Grace and Kyle, and several nieces and nephews.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church with Monsignor Ronald G. Yargeau, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Center cemetery in Sheffield.

Calling hour at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., will be Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
