Gary M. Remick

GREENFIELD - Gary "Fern" M. Remick, 60, of 83 Maple St., died Saturday (4-12-08) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on April 24, 1947, the son of Glen W. and Shirley K. (McAneaney) Remick. He attended St. Johnsbury Academy and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1965. Also, he attended Greenfield Community College.

Gary was a machinist for Kennametal (GTD) since 1977.

He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam and attained the rank of specialist 5th class.

Gary was a life member of the Shelburne Falls VFW.

He loved motorcycle riding and enjoyed pool, darts, playing cards and golfing.

Besides his father of Greenfield, he leaves his wife of 37 years, the former Dale S. Kabaniec; four sons, Lincoln S. and his wife Jennifer of Ocala, FL, Luke K. of Greenfield, Levi J. and his fiancee Lucinda of Cambridge and Logan T. and his wife Amy of Millers Falls; two brothers, Glenn Remick and his wife Gloria of Foristell, MO, and Erik Remick and his wife Lisa of Hau'ula, HI; a sister, Glennise Remick and her partner Donna Northrup of Greenfield; two grandchildren, Teagan and Emma Remick, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Gayle Remick, in 1994.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Isabelle A. Wetherby

GREENFIELD - Isabelle A. (Howard) Wetherby, 99, of Greenfield, died Thursday (4-10-08) at the Poet's Seat Health Care Center.

She was born in Leverett on Nov. 10, 1908, the daughter of Eva (Glazier) and Ethan V. Howard Sr.

She graduated from New Salem High School in 1928.

She was a secretary for the Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance Co. for 10 years.

Isabelle enjoyed sports and was an avid Red Sox fan.

Survivors include a brother, Ethan V. Howard Jr. of Leverett; two sisters, Jennie Widelo of Florence and Bernice Glazier of Leverett; a brother-in-law, Thomas Marsh of Brookline, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews including Marjorie Glazier of Leverett.

A graveside service will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Plainview cemetery in Leverett with the Rev. Larry Riddle, pastor of Moore's Corner Church, officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Moore's Corner Church, in care of Rev. Larry Riddle, 168 North Leverett Road, Leverett MA 01054.

Kostanski Funeral Home of Turners Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Rene C. James

TURNERS FALLS - Rene C. James, 50, of 77 Third St. died Monday (4-7-08) at home.

He was born in Greenfield on Dec. 8, 1957, the son of Stanborn and Bertha (Gosselin) James. He was a graduate of Greenfield High School and had been a resident of Greenfield prior to moving to Turners Falls in 2006.

Rene was employed in the shipping and receiving department for Lamson & Goodnow until 2007.

He loved sports and participated in baseball and football at Greenfield High School. He coached his daughters in the Greenfield Girls Softball League from 1988-2002 and was the No. 1 fan of the Greenfield Volleyball team. He was able to travel throughout the United States in 2007. He was Pepe James to Richard James Phaneuf II and had the bluest eyes this side of Paul Newman.

Survivors include two daughters, Melissa A. James of Greenfield and Sarah J. Cadran of New Salem; his former spouse of 22 years, Carol Cadran of Turners Falls; three brothers, Stanborn, William and Peter James, all of Greenfield; two sisters, Caroline Demers of Turners Falls and Louise Berry of Warwick; a grandson, Richard James Phaneuf II, and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., Greenfield, on a date and time to be announced.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Stanley A. Dlugosz

MILLERS FALLS - Stanley A. Dlugosz, 90, of 21 Bridge St. died Sunday (4-6-08) at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke.

He was born in Montague on Sept. 7, 1917, the son of Joseph and Caroline (Curyolo) Dlugosz. He was a graduate of Turners Falls High School and had been a resident of Millers Falls since 1961.

Stanley opened Stanley's Jewelry Store on Avenue A in Turners Falls in 1952, which he operated until his retirement in 1979.

Stanley married Irene (Pine) Thompson on Aug. 8, 1961. She predeceased him on March 6, 2001.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European African Theatre of War during WWII and attained the rank of corporal.

He was a communicant of St. John's Church in Millers Falls.

Stanley was a major in the Civil Air Patrol and was a pilot for 50 years and also a flight instructor.

He was a member of the Franklin County Flying Club, the Airport Commission and was a town meeting member for Precinct. 2.

Survivors include two sons, David P. Thompson and his wife Sofia of Turners Falls and Gare F. Thompson and his wife Ena of Lunenburg; a daughter, Katherine T. Crouse of Millers Falls; a brother, Edward Dlugosz and his wife Ernestine of Montague; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Josephine Dlugosz of Greenfield, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, A. James Thompson, in 2004, and by two brothers, Joseph Dlugosz in 2001 and Henry Dlugosz in 1977.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church in Millers Falls with the Rev. Dennis Bombardier, pastor, celebrant. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery, Turners Falls.

A calling hour will be Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Beverly J. Dorsey

ERVING - Beverly J. (Rathburn) Dorsey, 79, of 21 French King Highway died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at home peacefully with her family by her side.

She was born in Morrisville, VT., on Dec. 30, 1928, the daughter of Claude I. Sr. and Ethelyn N. (Sessions) Rathburn. She attended local schools in Vermont and then continued her education at the Thompson School of Nursing in Brattleboro, VT, where she received her LPN degree.

Beverly was a nurse at the former Franklin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Greenfield for over 25 years. After retirement, she continued her nursing by taking care of patients in their homes. She enjoyed ceramics, crafts, knitting and traveling.

Her husband, Edward F. Dorsey, predeceased her on May 16, 1990.

Among her survivors, she leaves one son, Michael E. Dorsey and his wife Martine of Gill; two daughters, Theresa M. Dorsey of Worcester and Patricia A. Daignault

and her husband Arthur of Beverly; three grandchildren, Jennifer Bass and her husband Dave, Maeghan Dorsey and Michelle Daignault; one great-grandson, Conner Dunn; one brother, Claude I. Rathburn Jr. of Morrisville, VT.; one sister, Joan Emerson of Jacksonville, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

Beverly was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

Services will be Friday April 4, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls.

A calling hour will be at 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Highland cemetery in Millers Falls at a later date.

Memorial contribution can be made to Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway St., Greenfield, MA. 01301.

Carolyn V. Caouette

GREENFIELD - Carolyn V. (Czerwinski) Caouette, 72, of 10 Congress St. died on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at Baystate Franklin Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Winchester, NH, on Sept. 20, 1935, the daughter of Joseph and Varja (Godleski) Czerwinski. She attended Greenfield schools and graduated from Greenfield High School in June of 1953. She also took courses in criminal justice at Greenfield Community College.

On May 21, 1955, she was married to Raymond K Caouette at Sacred Heart Church in Greenfield.

For 13 years, she was employed at the Greenfield Police Department as a secretary to the chief of police and worked with the detective bureau.

Carolyn and her husband owned Caouette's Catering for over 10 years before their retirement.

For seven years, she was a receptionist at Clinical and Support Options.

Carolyn was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace in Turners Falls where she served as a Saint Peregrine visitor of parishioners in area nursing homes. She was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church where she belonged to the Sacred Heart Guild.

As a resident of Greenfield Acres, she was president of the Hi Rise Club for three years and also served as a bingo caller. She was a past volunteer for Hospice and worked in the hospital gift shop for many years. Carolyn was a former member of the Women of the Moose.

She loved to knit, read, cook, play cards and bingo.

Besides her husband of 53 years, Raymond K. Caouette, she leaves four beloved children, Nancy Rucci and her husband James of Lilburn, GA, David Caouette of Portage, MI, Michael Caouette and his wife Tracy of Garden Grove, CA, and Maryanne Wells and her husband Robert of Montague. She also leaves her eight wonderful grandchildren, Meredith Everett, Kathryn Rucci, Alex, Kimberly, Ciara and Joseph Caouette and Cody and Nicholas Wells. She adored her three great-grandchildren, Ariana, Samantha and Jacqueline Everett. She also leaves tow sisters, Irene Barrett and her husband Charles of Greenfield and Natalyia Kremski of Rocky Hill, CT and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday (3-29) at 8 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at Our Lady of Peace Church in Turners Falls with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa cemetery in Greenfield.

Calling hours will be Friday (3-28) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gabriel L. Mason

ERVING - Gabriel "Gabe" L. Mason, 24, of 21 Pleasant St. died Tuesday (3-25-08) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

He was born in Northampton on Feb. 5, 1984, the son of Veda Mason and Stephen Demerski. Gabe graduated from Turners Falls High School, Class of 2001.

He was a first responder and enjoyed being a mediator, having worked in after school programs for troubled youths. He was also involved with Buddy Baseball. While attending Greenfield Community College, Gabe was the assistant manager at the Rendezvous Restaurant in Turners Falls.

He served his country in Iraq with the U.S. Navy as a Medical Field Service Technician. Gabe received the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Iraq Campaign Medal (with Eagle, Globe and Anchor) along with the Expert Rifle and Pistol Medals.

Survivors include his father, Stephen Demerski of Northampton and his mother and stepfather, Veda Mason-Hillman and Jim Hillman of Erving; a brother, Zackery W. Hillman, and a sister, Molly S. Hillman, both of Erving; his maternal grandparents, Joyce and Phil Poudrier of Greenfield, and grandparents, Russell and Pauline Hillman of Shutesbury. He also leaves several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by a cousin, Walter, in 1986.

Services will be Tuesday (4-1) at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square in Turners Falls. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

A calling hour will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
