Agnes A. Golembeski

TURNERS FALLS - Agnes A. (Bocon) Golembeski, 83, of 22 H St., died Friday (4-25-08) at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

She was born in Turners Falls on December 19, 1924, the daughter of Martin and Tekla (Sojka) Bocon.

She attended local schools in Turners Falls.

Aggie was head custodian at the former AT&T; Company in Greenfield for 15 years before retiring in 1980. Prior to that she worked for a period of time at the former Ingersoll-Rand Company and the Farren Hospital. Aggie was a communicant of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church and a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality. She was very active in many of the church's activities including singing in the choir. Aggie loved all animals. She enjoyed traveling, taking many trips and cruises, dancing, music and being outdoors and gardening.

Aggie was a very generous person who had a great love for her family and a wonderful sense of humor.

Among her survivors she leaves two sons, Frances Golembeski and his wife MaryAnn of Erving, and Edward Golembeski and his wife Debra of Gill; a daughter, Janet Norman and her husband David of Greenfield; her long-time loving companion Donald K. Parda also known as Grampy Don of Turners Falls; a sister, Helen Golambeski of Turners Falls. She also leaves eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Anthony J. Golembeski Sr. pre-deceased her in 1956, and also her first born son pre-deceased her, Anthony J. Golembeski Jr., February 23, 1974.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 30 at 9:15 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church with the Rev. Charles Di Mascola officiating.

Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Our lady of Czestochowa Renovation Fund, 84 K St., Turners Falls MA 01376 or Mass cards in her memory.

Simon A. Zatyrka

GREENFIELD - Simon A. Zatyrka, 71, of 39 Wildwood Ave. died Wednesday (4-23-08) at home.

He was born in Greenfield on Oct. 10, 1936, the son of Simon and Anna (Bishko) Zatyrka. He was a graduate of Northfield Mount Hermon and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He had been a resident of Greenfield most of his life.

Simon was a technical specialist at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for 37 years, retiring in 2002.

He served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War.

He was a member of the Democratic National Committee and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Simon enjoyed woodworking and was an aviation enthusiast.

Survivors include a son, Simon R. and his wife Idabelle of Oakland, CA; a sister, Arlene Baronas of Eastham, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be private and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Democratic National Committee, 430 S. Capitol St., SE, Washington, DC 20003 or to the American Civil Liberties Union, 125 Broad St., 18th Floor, NY, NY 10004.

Kostanski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. .

George J. Stetson

GREENFIELD - George J. Stetson, 66, of 425 Country Club Road, died Monday (4-21-08) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

He was born in Derby, Vt., on Jan. 27, 1942, the son of Charles and Bernice (Bessetts) Stetson. He attended local schools in Derby and also Arms Academy, Shelburne Falls. He had been a resident of Greenfield since 1959.

George owned George's Recycling and Repair for many years.

He was a sponsor for the DARE Program and was a big supporter of Boy Scout Troop 121 in Colrain.

Survivors include two daughters, Michelle A. Conant of Turners Falls and Jayne L. Stetson of South Deerfield; three brothers, Donald C. Stetson Sr. and his wife Charlotte of Colrain, Ronald L. Stetson Sr. and his wife Pearl of Millers Falls and James A. Stetson and his fiancee Carla Preston of Greenfield; two sisters, Shirley J. Tirrell of Turners Falls and Donna C. Babcock of Hancock; seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Michael and Danielle Conant, Brianna Rice, Brian and Brandi Stetson and Michael Dods; a stepdaughter, Theresa Bailey of Montague; his former wife, Joan Paulin of Turners Falls, and several nieces and nephews.

His fiancee was Leslie Stevens.

He was predeceased by a son, Michael A. Stetson, in 1985.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St. Burial will follow in Green River Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the DARE Program, c/o Greenfield Police Dept., 321 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Joseph W. Gagner

GREENFIELD - Joseph W. Gagner, 65, of 32 Beech St., died Sunday (4-20-08) at home.

He was born in Greenfield on Oct. 11, 1942, the son of Joseph L. and Agnes (Casey) Gagner. He was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He had been a resident of Greenfield most of his life.

Joe was a policeman for the Greenfield Police Department from 1966 until 1998, when he retired as a lieutenant. He was the first acting police officer to obtain a four-year college degree.

He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. John Paul Jones during the Cuban missile crisis and attained the rank of Signalman 3rd Class.

Joe was a life member of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose.

He was a firearm enthusiast and enjoyed pheasant hunting, fishing, spending time at the camp in Vermont and playing cribbage.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, the former Dolores "Dee" A. Roy; a son, Joseph L. of Greenfield; a daughter, Shannon M. Hansen and her husband Greg of Erda, UT; a brother, Thomas Gagner of Greenfield; two sisters, Pat Gagner Franck of Pittsfield and May Crowley of Bernardston; two grandsons, Owen and Tucker Hansen, and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday at the Greenfield Lodge of Elks from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Kostanski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sharlene M. Jobst

BUCKLAND - - Sharlene M. (Tatta) Jobst, 35, of 141 East Buckland Road died Saturday (4-19-08) at home.

She was born in Lowell on Aug. 26, 1972, the daughter of Louis Sr. and Lyn (Litchfield) Tatta. She was a graduate of Greenfield High School and received her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Simmons College. She was currently working towards her master's degree. She had been a resident of Turners Falls prior to moving to Buckland in 2000.

Sharlene had been a social worker for the Department of Social Services for nine years. She spent her life dedicated to others.

Survivors include her husband, Karl A. Jobst Jr.; two daughters, Sierra and Hailey Jobst, at home; her mother and stepfather, Lynn and Stephen Jones of North Carolina; a brother, Louis Tatta Jr. and his wife Ellen of Orange, and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Karl A. Sr. and Germaine Jobst of Greenfield.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls, with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, Western New England Children's Center, 24 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107.

Peter P. Atamaniuk

BERNARDSTON - Peter P. Atamaniuk, 86, of 52 Gill Road, formerly of Greenfield, died Wednesday (8-20-08) at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

Mr. Atamaniuk was born in Turners Falls on May 29, 1922, the son of Daniel and Barbara (Seniuk) Atamaniuk.

He attended school in East Dummerston.

In the late 1920s following the death of his father, the family moved to the Brattleboro, Vt. area, then to East Dummerson where his family operated a small farm on Wheeler Road. The homestead eventually became known as the Willowbrook Farm.

He attended the Slab Hollow School, a one-room schoolhouse. IN 1941 he moved to Central Street in Brattleboro, Vt.

He was a forest park ranger at the Charlemont State Forest.

On Oct. 22, 1942 Peter joined the U.S. Army Air Corp. During World War II he was stationed in the European African Theatre of War and attained the rank of sergeant. He received honorable discharge at the end of his term.

In 2002 Peter moved in with his devoted daughter Kathy after the death of his wife, Lorraine on March 12, 2002, where he was surrounded with love from his family and friends.

Most of all Peter enjoyed spending time with his twin granddaughters, Julie and Megan whom he and his pre-deceased wife raised since birth. They were the light of his life.

He loved sitting at the kitchen table with his grandson Timothy for long periods of his time talking about his war experiences. He also enjoyed talking about the good old boating days with his grandson Charles for they both have a passion for boating. In the past years, he also enjoyed horse racing, Hampton Beach, Laurel Lake, bingo and the outdoors, along with family gatherings. His favorite: having that vanilla creamy that he looked forward to every day.

Peter was a long time communicant of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Brattleboro, Vt., then Holy Trinity Church on Main Street in Greenfield.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathy Willor of Bernardston; his son, Shane Atamaniuk and wife, Barbara, of Turners Falls; five grandchildren, Timothy Willor, Charles Willor and wife, Sarah, and Julie, Megan and Shawn Atamaniuk. Brothers, Michael Atamaniuk of Brattleboro, Vt., and Joseph Siniuk of Charleston, S.C., and several nieces and nephews.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Lorraine (Patnode) Atamaniuk in 2002, his daughter Denise Atamaniuk in 2005, two sisters Mary Atamaniuk in 2005, Ginny Johnson in 2006, and two brothers, John Atamaniuk and Francis Siniuk, whom died as infants.

Services will be Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., Greenfield, followed by a funeral mass at 9 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church.

Burial will follow in St. Anne's cemetery in Turners Falls with military honors performed by the U.S. Air Force.

Calling hours will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Thomas S. Norwood Sr.

NORTHFIELD - Thomas S. Norwood Sr., 62, of 667 Gulf Road, formerly of Montague, died Tuesday (8-19-08) at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

He was born in Charlemont on May 12, 1946, the son of Harry and Marion (LaClaire) Norwood.

He graduated from Turners Falls High School in 1964 where he enjoyed playing football. Also, he received his associates degree in liberal arts from Greenfield Community College. He had been a resident of Montague prior to moving to Northfield in 1990.

Tom was a paving superintendent for Warner Bros. until 1990.

He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam where he trained Labradors for the Combat Tracker Team and attained the rank of sergeant. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action.

He was a member of the D.A.V.

Tom loved working in the woods with his sons.

Besides his mother of Montague, he leaves his wife of 40 years, the former Lynn M. Reipold; two sons, Thomas S. Jr. of Montague and Cory D. and his wife, Kristy, of Northfield; three brothers, Harry and David of Montague and Richard of Wisconsin; a sister, Cynthia Howard of Leverett; five grandchildren, Heather, Colby, Gabriel, Bradley and Carly Mae; a daughter-in-law, Rita Norwood of Valley Lee, Md., and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square in Turners Falls.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

A calling hour will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
