Helen M. Grimard

TURNERS FALLS - Helen M. (Rhodes) Grimard, 85, of 6 Henry Ave., died Friday (8-28-2009) at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1924, in Greenfield, the daughter of Frederick and Laura A. (Dubie) Rhodes.

She attended local schools in Greenfield and was a graduate of Greenfield High School.

Mrs. Grimard, with her husband, owned and operated two shoe repair stores from 1967 to 1988, Grimard Shoe Service of Turners Falls and Paul's Shoe Repair of Amherst.

Prior to working at the stores, Helen was employed for a period of time at Wesco Co. of Greenfield and Rockdale of Turners Falls.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church in Turners Falls.

Helen and her husband Paul enjoyed their summers at their camp on Long Pond in New Hampshire, especially on the 4th of July when all the family came together.

During the winter months, they spent their time in Venice, Fla.

While there she loved to write letters to her family.

They also went on several cruises.

Helen had a passion for knitting, making afghans, family picture albums and dancing. She loved her grandchildren very much.

Among her survivors she leaves her husband of 57 years, Paul N. Grimard; five children: David P. Grimard and his wife, Patty, of Davidsonville, Md., and their children, Matt, Josh, Sam and Lucas; Kathy Wickles and her husband, mark, of Hatfield, and their children, Brittney, Kevin and Lucas; Kevin N. Grimard and his wife, Pam, of Turners Falls, and their children, Jason, Megan and Lauren; Shirley I. Currie and husband, Roy, of Granby and their children, Cassy, Brock, Colby, Cameron and Roy; Paul A. Grimard and his children, Kyle, Lexie, Talia, Corbyn, and his fiance, Tamara Corbone and their child, Sophia, all of Turners Falls; two sisters, Jeanette Harris of Westhampton and Shirley Ullstrom of Farley Flats, Erving, and several nieces and nephews.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be Tuesday (9-1-2009) at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls, with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

A calling hour will be Tuesday (9-1-2009) from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Peace Renovation Fund, 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls MA 01376 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 264 Cottage St., Springfield MA 01164.

Robert J. Cousineau Sr.

TURNERS FALLS - Robert J. Cousineau Sr., 52, of 201 Millers Falls Road, died Saturday (8-22-2009) at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

He was born in Montague on April 15, 1957, the son of Douglas Sr. and Joyce (Williams) Cousineau.

He attended Turners Falls High School and had been a resident of Montague most of his life.

Bob had been employed in the mailroom for the Recorder.

Previously, he was employed as a disc jockey for WHAI radio and also owned Montague Taxi from 1983-1990.

He was a member of the Franklin Stamp Club.

He enjoyed flea marketing and collecting stamps, coins, bottles and records.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, the former Susan E. Chase; a son, Steve Chase and his wife, Heather, of Greenfield; a daughter, Jennifer Gray and her husband, Sean, of Turners Falls; a brother, Jerry Cousineau of Texas; four sisters, Evelyn Beliveau and her husband, Paul, of Walpole, N.H., Lori LeClaire of Winchester, N.H., Ruth Cousineau of Greenfield and Michelle Cousineau of Walpole, N.H.; three grandchildren, Mackenzie, Noah and Makayla; his mother-in-law, Jean Chase of Greenfield; his stepmother, Sophie Cousino of Walpole, N.H., two stepbrothers, Michael and Frank Sherman of Kansas; a stepsister, Nancy Sherman of Walpole, N.H.; two uncles, Norman Cousino Sr. of Greenfield and Ernest Cousino of New York; two aunts, Earla Fisher of Lake Pleasant and Jeanette Cousino of Greenfield and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was pre-deceased by a son, Robert J. Jr., on Aug. 3, 2003, and his brothers, Douglas Cousineau Jr. and Peter Sherman.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square with the Rev. Daniel Johnson, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

A calling hour will be Thursday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Rita F. Gibson

TURNERS FALLS - Rita F. (Momaney) Gibson, 85, of Park Villa Apartments, died Tuesday (8-18-2009) at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born in Chicopee on December 15, 1923, the daughter of Leon and Emelia (Denault) Momaney.

She attended local schools in Montague and had been a resident of Turners Falls most of her life.

Rita was co-owner with her late husband, Paul, of the former Millers Falls Veterans Club for 20 years.

Previously, she was employed for the Erving Paper Mill.

She was a communicant of Our lady of Peace Church and was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Coutu Murphy VFW Post 2728.

Rita was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed playing cards and watching TV game shows.

Her husband, Paul "Gibby" E. Gibson, pre-deceased her on January 16, 2000.

Survivors include two sons, John and his wife, Barbara, of Greenfield, and Kevin and his wife, Diane, of Riverside, Gill; a daughter, Linda Molloy and her husband, Kevin, of Turners Falls; four brothers, Leon Momaney of Montague, Ernest Momaney of Turners Falls, George Momaney of Alamo, Calif., and William Momaney of Brentwood, Calif.; a sister, Helen Chagnon of Montague City; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by a son, Ronald P. Gibson, on July 2, 2001.

Also she was pre-deceased by her four sisters, Beatrice Emond, Rachel White, Anita Fritz and Jeannie Sullivan.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

A calling hour will be Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Peace Church Renovation Fund, in care of the Rev. Aksamit, 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls MA 01376 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Donna Lee Whitcomb

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Donna Lee (Kelleher) Whitcomb, 63, of 5610 East 67th Place, formerly of Greenfield, Mass., died Monday (8-17-2009) at Hospice St. John in Lakewood.

She was born in Boston, Mass., on Dec. 25, 1945, the daughter of Richard and Marjorie (Wood) Kelleher.

She was a graduate of Greenfield High School and had been a resident of Greenfield for many years until moving to Colorado in 1994.

Donna Lee was a homemaker and loved her boxer dogs.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, George Whitcomb; three daughters, Mary Ellen Russell, Suzi Little and Michelle; five sons, Tom, Jason, Jacob, Reggie and Andy Whitcomb; a brother, John Kelleher; 12 grandchildren, Meagan, Lorah, Joanne, Michelle, Ryan, Jennifer, Caitlin, Steven, Madison, Victoria, Nichole and Leiloni (LaLa); a godson, Brian Chandronnet, and several nieces and nephews.

Services, all in Greenfield, will be held Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 in Blessed Sacrament Church.

The Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Mass., 393 Maple St., Springfield, MA 01105.

Robert B. Flagg

ALLENDALE, N.J. - Robert "Bob" B. Flagg, 61, died Friday (8-14-2009)at home after a year battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 29, 1947, in Greenfield, Mass., he was the son of Kathryn (Scott) Flagg and the late C. Raymond Flagg.

Bob grew up in Millers Falls and attended the former Highland Elementary School.

Bob graduated from Turners Falls High School Class of 1965 where he was active in the music program, including marching and concert bands, orchestra and dance band, and was a member of the Pro Merito Honor Society.

Following graduation, Bob attended Bentley College in Boston, graduating in 1969 with a BS degree in accounting, summa cum laude.

During summer vacations and holidays, Bob continued his love of music by performing with the Turners Falls Military Band, the Greenfield Military Band and other musical groups.

After college, Bob began working in Boston as staff accountant with the KPMG Peat Marwick CPA Firm (formerly Peat, Marwick Mitchell & Co.)

However, Bob's career was interrupted while he spent 3 years in the U.S. Army at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where he received the Army Commendation Medal.

Upon his discharge from the Army, Bob rejoined KPMG Peat Marwick in Washington, D.C., where he served on the audit staff and was eventually promoted to office controller.

From 1978 to 1982, he temporarily left KPMG Peat Marwick to work on Capitol Hill as controller for the National Governors' Association.

A Certified Public Accountant, Bob was a member of the American Institute of CPA's.

Bob moved to New Jersey in 1986 to join the newly created Internal Audit Department at KPMG Peat Marwick's Executive Office.

As a major part of his work, he traveled extensively to review financial and accounting controls at more than 90 operating offices throughout the Firm.

Bob retired in July 2000 as Associate Director of Internal Audit.

On April 18, 1998, Bob married Donna Mahr. Their daughter, Ashley Elizabeth, 17, is the love of their lives.

In addition to love of family, Bob cherished time spent at their shore property in Ocean City, N.J., where he served as president and treasurer of his condominium association.

Bob's greatest joy was being able to retire early so he could be with Ashley and watch her grow into the fine young lady she has become.

Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood, N.J., where he served as chairman of the Audit Committee prior to his illness.

Besides his wife, daughter and mother, Bob is survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Bob's father, the late C. Raymond Flagg, pre-deceased him in 2000.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls, Mass., with the Rev. Richard Fournier officiating.

Burial will follow at Highland cemetery in Millers Falls.

Calling hours will be today from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Bob's memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, attention: Contribution Services, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline MA 02445.
