Pop worked for the B&M; Railroad and the Charlestown Naval Shipyard before going to work for the airlines. In retirement, he worked at the Hatherley Country Club in Scituate. He was an active member of the Lions Club since 1962.

Beloved husband of Dorothy A. (Hayes) McCarthy Meade. Loving stepfather of John McCarthy of Winchendon, Kevin, Susan, and Joanne McCarthy, all of South Boston, and Paul McCarthy of Dorchester. Brother of Edward of Vero Beach, FL, Joseph of Randolph, Virginia McNeil of West Bridgewater, Claire Nolan of Hyde Park, and the late Robert and Patricia Meade, Dorothy Fairfield, amd Rose Girouard. Also, survived by 3 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Meade was born and brought up in Roxbury. He graduated from St. John’s Grammar School and Roxbury Memorial High School where he played on the baseball, football, and basketball teams. He also participated in those same sports in the old Boston Park Leagues. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War attaining the rank of Sergeant 516th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

Mr. Meade joined the Boston Police Department in July of 1957, and was initially assigned to Station 7 in East Boston and eventually worked out of every station in the department including stations 2, 3, 16, 17, 18 and 19 which have subsequently been closed. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1972 and was assigned to District 5 in Cleary Square, Hyde Park until he was transferred to Area A which is comprised of East Boston, Charlestown, Downtown Boston, Beacon Hill, Chinatown and the Combat Zone, where he worked with area detectives. Mr. Meade was transferred as a night patrol supervisor, was promoted to Lieutenant and was assigned as the day Executive Officer with the responsibility for all police operations for the Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan neighborhoods.

Mr. Meade was promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent in 1988 and was assigned as the Chief of the Bureau of Professional Standards until his retirement in 1992.

During his 35 year career, Mr. Meade was the recipient of a great many awards and citations including the Boston Police Dept. Medal of Honor, the Thomas F. Sullivan award for exceptional and outstanding performance of duty, the Boston Police Relief Assoc. award for distinguished service in the line of duty, the Boston Bank Award for exceptional and outstanding performance of duty, Three Police Commisioner’s Commendation Awards for exemplary performance of duty, the Police Officer of the Month Award, and on two separate occasions he was awarded the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Assoc. Award of Merit for outstanding performance of duty which at the time was rarely awarded to a Superior Officer. In addition Mr. Meade was recommended for commendation on eleven other occasions.

He was also the recipient of the Codman Square Residents Assoc. Award and the Corbett and Morton St. crime watch group award, and numerous letters to the Police Commisioner from citizens commending him for providing services and assistance to area residents. Mr. Meade was a member of the International Chief’s of Police Assoc. and was a graduate of many specialized law enforcement training courses including the Command Training Institute of Law Enforcement Management at Babson College in Wellesley where he was President of his graduating class. He also received training in Patrol Tactics in Hostage situations at the Mass. Criminal Justice Training Council and human relations training at the New England Institute.

After his retirement in 1992, Mr. and Mrs. Meade moved from Roslindale to Hull and they spent winters in Vero Beach, Florida, where they had previously spent their vacations for the previous eighteen years.

Mr. Meade was a member of the Boston Police Retired Police Officers, the Boston Polic Emerald Society, the Boston Police Superior Officers Federation, and the Boston Police Relief Assoc. He was also a member in the Vero Beach, Florida of the Eagles, Moose, VFW, and the American Legion.

Mrs. Fournier worked as the Cafeteria Manager for Sylvania Electric from 1970 to 1980. Before that, she worked at the Wise Shoe Factory. She had lived 58 years in Exeter, NH before moving to Quincy four years ago.

Pat grew up in South Boston and moved to Hough's Neck 40 years ago. She worked for New England Telephone Co. for about 5 years before raising her family. After her children were grown, she enrolled at Massosoit College where she received her nursing degree. Pat worked as a registered nurse at Carney Hospital in Dorchester for more than 17 years, Pat also worked for Blue Cross & Blue Sheild of Massachusetts as a Nurse Case reviewer. Pat also worked for several other doctors in private practice throughout her career. Although she had retired back in 2000, Pat came out of retirement to become a school nurse at Milton Academy.Pat died in her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
