Frank Enos, Jr.
April 19, 2003

Frank Enos, Jr., 85, of Dartmouth died April 19, 2003 at home unexpectedly.

He was the husband of the late Julietta C. (Chaves) Enos and son of the late Frank F. and Emily (Silveira) Enos.

Mr. Enos was born in New Bedford and lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth for most of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church.

Mr. Enos was formerly employed as a firefighter for the City of New Bedford Fire Department until his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include a son, Frank D. Enos of Piqua, Ohio; a daughter Joyce L. Craft of Houston, Ohio; 2 sisters, Dorothy Greene of Westport and Mary Enos of Dartmouth; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He is the father of the late Wayne R. Enos and brother of the late William Enos.

His private Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery.

Melvin E. Gomes
April 22, 2003

Melvin E. Gomes, 63, of New Bedford died April 22, 2003 at Mediplex Rehabilitation Hospital after a long courageous battle with A.L.S.

He was the husband of Dorothy A. "Dotty" (Ramos) Gomes, and son of the late Domingo and Rose (Gonsalves) Gomes.

A lifelong resident of New Bedford, he was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.

Mr. Gomes was formerly employed at J.C. Rhodes Manufacturing for over 30 years until its closing.

He enjoyed music and singing, and spending time with his granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kim M. Rose, and her husband Toriano, of New Bedford; 4 brothers, William Gomes of Randolph, Alan Gomes of Bridgeport, Conn., John Gomes of Marion and David Gomes of New Bedford; 4 sisters, Vivian Vieira and Joyce Medina, both of New Bedford, Rosemary Castro of South Dartmouth, and Cheryl Walwyn of Walpole; 2 granddaughters, Brittney Teixeira and Jillian Teixeira, both of New Bedford; an uncle, John Gonsalves of Dartmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Friday at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Thursday, April 24th from 4-8 PM.

Interment St. John's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the ALS Association Mass. Chapter, 7 Lincoln St. #213, Wakefield, MA 01880.

Mary E. Adams
March 25, 2004

Mary E. (Fisher) Adams, 95, of Mattapoisett, died March 25, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles A. Adams.

Born and raised in Holliston, the daughter of the late Charles D. and Mabel F. (Vaughn) Fisher, she had moved to Larchmont, New York for several years following her marriage, before moving to New Bedford in 1942 and then to Mattapoisett in 1961.

Mrs. Adams was a graduate of Boston University class of 1927 majoring in Music and Math. She next attended Simmons College for a degree in Library Arts after which she created a Library for LaSalle College so that they could be accredited. She then became the librarian of the Jones Library in Amherst, MA which served the town and the many area colleges.

She was an active member for many years of the First Unitarian Church in New Bedford, where she served on the Board and was a member of the Couple's Club, the Sewing Circle and the Women's Alliance. She and the late Esther Bridgman instigated the "Book Club" which flourishes still. Mary's love of music, piano and jazz, bridge, family and friends gave her much pleasure. She was a library volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital for many years, and was a member of the Library Associates at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. She was also a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, the Eastern Star and the Mattapoisett Women's Club.

Survivors include a niece, Marilyn Flood, and her husband Nathan, of Mattapoisett; a nephew, Edward Jester, and his wife Linda, of Mattapoisett and Florida; a grandson, Kenneth S. Flood, and his partner Alan Schmidt, of California; a dear family friend, Lisa Ayotte of Rochester; a sister-in-law, Lina F. Fisher of Florida; and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was the grandmother of the late Richard A. Flood, and sister of the late Robert D. Fisher, Charles D. Fisher, Merle V. (Fisher) Jester and George F. Fisher.

Her Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2004 at 1 PM in the First Unitarian Church, Corner of Union and County Streets, New Bedford.

Arrangements are with the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd., (Rt. 6) Mattapoisett.

Bessie Poulos
May 28, 2003

Bessie (Valcanas) Poulos, 79, affectionately known as "Yiayia", of South Dartmouth died Wednesday May 28, 2003 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Dr. John Poulos.

Born in Lowell, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Dina (Lampropoulos) Valcanas, she had lived in New Bedford for most of her life.

Mrs. Poulos was a very active member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in New Bedford, where she was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and a member of the Church choir.

She was a graduate of Lowell High School.

Her treasures in life were her five daughters and her ten grandchildren, of which her greatest joy was sharing in their everyday lives. She lived her life through her strong commitment and faith in God. Her genuine smile and kindness warmed the hearts of many.

She is survived by her five loving daughters, Dorothea Correia, and her husband Arthur, of Freetown, Gloria Hebert and her husband Gerald, of New Bedford, Connie Rodrigues and her husband Edward, of Acushnet, Joanne Costa and her husband Marty, and Victoria Kelleher and her husband Thomas, all of South Dartmouth; and ten devoted grandchildren, Katie and Annie Hebert, both of New Bedford, Nicholas Correia of Freetown, Rebecca, Gretchen and Ryan Rodrigues, all of Acushnet, and Jonathan and Stephanie Costa and Lauren and Michael Kelleher, all of South Dartmouth. She was the sister of the late Charles Valcanas, Ernest Valcanas, Peter Valcanas, and Marie Kakides.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Monday June 2, 2003 at 9 AM. Funeral Service at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 87 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday June 1, 2003 from 4-8 PM. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.

John J. Walsh
May 29, 2003

John J. Walsh, 85, of Dartmouth died May 29, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Lucille Walsh and son of the late Thomas and Esther (Murphy) Walsh.

Mr. Walsh was born in Bolton, England, and had lived in New Bedford, Fairhaven and Dartmouth for most of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church in North Dartmouth.

Mr. Walsh was formerly employed with Berkshire Hathaway before becoming a Social Worker for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in New Bedford.

He enjoyed music and old movies.

Survivors include a brother, Joseph Walsh of Needham; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Rose McCarthy, Mary T. Debrosse and Thomas Walsh.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Saturday, May 31st at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Julie Billiart Church at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Friday, May 30th from 4-7 PM.

Interment St. Mary's Cemetery.

Rene A. Ouellette
May 31, 2003

Rene A. Ouellette, 88, of Fairhaven died Saturday May 31, 2003 at Nichols House Nursing Home after a brief illness. He was the husband of Gertrude A. (LaFrance) Ouellette; they had been married for 60 years.

Born in Taunton, the son of the late Francois and Rosanna (Desjardins) Ouellette, he lived in New Bedford and Fairhaven for most of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church.

Mr. Ouellette was formerly employed as an accountant for General Motors for many years at various dealerships in Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and Boston.

Mr. Ouellette was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Bentley College. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and participated in the Battle of Central Europe. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal.

Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, Robert Ouellette and his wife Elizabeth of Dedham, Albert Ouellette of Fairhaven, and Atty. Alfred Ouellette and his wife Leanne of Shrewsbury; 3 daughters, Elaine Viveiros and her husband Richard of Acushnet, Pauline Swanson of Holbrook, and Lucille Boucher and her husband Ronald of Rochester; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late David Swanson, and brother of the Roland Ouellette, Rita Powell, and Rose Alma Ouellette.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Wednesday June 4, 2003 at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Church, Fairhaven at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday June 3, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National cemetery in Bourne.

Maria S. Andrade

Maria S. (Santos) Andrade, 100, of New Bedford died Sunday June 1, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Anibal Andrade.

Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the daughter of the late Fortunato and Ravana (Missini) dosSantos, she lived in Brava for many years until moving to New Bedford in 1966.

She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.

Survivors include 2 sons, Carlos S. Andrade and Sinis Andrade, both of New Bedford; 4 sisters, Zelinda Mendes, Patrucina Santos, and Angela Fernandes, all of Brockton, and Benvinda DePina of Brava; 6 grandchildren, Leidi Andrade, Anibal Andrade, David Andrade, Michael Andrade, Carlos Andrade Jr., and Anthony Andrade; 15 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late John Carlos Andrade and Robert Andrade, and sister of the late Alicia Santos and Manuel Santos.

Jeffrey Morrison
June 01, 2003

Jeffrey Ross Morrison, 41, of New Bedford died Sunday June 1, 2003 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of Virginia M. (Mullaly) Morrison of New Bedford and the late James "Buddy" Morrison.

Born in New Bedford, he had lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was a member of the North Baptist Church.

Mr. Morrison was formerly employed as a machinist at the Acushnet Company.

He was very devoted to his son, and enjoyed attending his sporting events. He enjoyed playing softball and golf, and had been a baseball coach for the Dartmouth Youth Athletic Association.

Survivors include his mother; a son, Jeffrey R. Morrison Jr. of Fairhaven; 2 step-sons, Michael Buhour and Matthew Buhour, both of Fairhaven; a brother, James J. Morrison, and his fiancée, Deborah Jones, of New Bedford; 2 sisters, Deborah J. Mimoso, and her husband Michael, of Rhinebeck, NY, and Donna J. Spirlet, and her husband Troy, of Westport; his paternal grandmother, Evelyn M. (Bock) Agostinho of New Bedford; his former wife and good friend, Denise Buhour of Fairhaven, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday June 4, 2003 at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Jeffrey Morrison, Jr. Educational Fund, c/o Commonwealth Utilities Employees Credit Union, 312 Wareham Rd., Marion, MA 02738.

Bruce L. Stroud
May 31/0003

Bruce L. Stroud, 46, of Fairhaven died May 31, 2003 unexpectedly at St. Luke's Hospital.

He was the son of Sarah A. (Bulgar) Stroud of Bronx, NY and Thomas L. Stroud of New Bedford.

Mr. Stroud was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was employed as an auto mechanic.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his parents; a daughter, Nasia Miller of Kansas City, Missouri; a brother, Wayne Stroud of Kansas City; a sister, Deborah L. Grahm of Fairhaven; Richard Andrews of Bronx, NY, who was like his step-father; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Saturday, June 7th at 10 AM .

Visiting hours will be Saturday morning from 9 to 10 AM.

Interment St. Mary's Cemetery.
