Funeral Mass in St. Joseph Manor Chapel, 215 Thatcher St., Brockton Tuesday at 9:30 am. Officiated by Fr. Arthur Gouthro S.A. Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery, W. Bridgewater. Visiting Hours Monday 4-8 pm at the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, (Rte 123) Brockton. Donations in Winifred’s memory may be made to the Friars of the Atonement, 475 Westgate Drive, Brockton, MA 02301.

Mrs. Clark died Tuesday morning at St. Joseph Manor after a period of failing health. Born in Jamaica Plain, daughter of the late John J. and Catherine M. (Dolan) Duffy. She was a graduate of Boston School of Practical Arts in 1926. She retired in 1974 from the Brockton VA Medical Center Dietary Department. Former tenant and past Treasurer of Kennedy Drive Assoc. Member of the Twentieth Century Catholic Club, Brockton. Mrs. Clark volunteered over 4000 hours at the Brockton VA Medical Center. Oldest living member of 58 years of the Secular Franciscan Order at the Chapel of Atonement and past member of St. Colman Ladies Sodality.

She is survived by a daughter Dorothy W. Horton and her husband E. Wayne, 3 grandsons, Chris Horton of Amherst, NH, Jeffrey Horton of Beverly, MA and Scott “Mickey” Horton of Stockton, CA., a great grandson Chayce Horton and several nieces and nephews.

Mother of Maryanne Sergio of Lakeville, Michael O’Leary of Easton, Mark O’Leary of New York and William P. O’Leary of South Yarmouth. Survived by 10 grandchildren. Sister of John Towle and Ellen Keane both of Brockton

Mrs. O’Leary died Friday morning at the Guardian Center following a brief illness. Born in Brockton, daughter of the late Charles and Ethel (Walsh) Towle. Graduate of Brockton High School Class of 1942. Mrs. O’Leary had been an operator at the New England Telephone and a secretary for the Brockton Public Schools. In her retirement she was a substitute teacher for St. Edward School and the Froio Elementary School in Abington. Member of the 20th Century Catholic Club, Charity Guild. She enjoyed traveling, reading and spending time with her family

She is survived by her husband William S. O’Leary, a daughter Maryanne Sergio of Lakeville, 3 sons, Michael O’Leary of Easton, Mark O’Leary of New York and William P. O’Leary of South Yarmouth, 10 grandchildren, a brother John Towle and a sister Ellen Keane both of Brockton.

Simpson of Brockton April 26, 2003 Rita F. (Flynn) Simpson. Beloved wife of Paul H. Simpson. Loving mother of Teresa Lasser of Upper Saddle River, NJ; Michael Simpson of Berkley and Elizabeth Simpson of Brockton. Sister of Margaret Flynn of Somerville and Helen Driscoll of NH. Grandmother of four.

Mrs. Simpson died Saturday morning at the Northeast Specialty Hospital in Braintree after a period of failing health. She was born in Somerville and raised in South Boston, a daughter of the late Michael and Teresa (Murphy) Flynn. She had been a resident of Brockton since 1971.

Mrs. Simpson was a graduate of South Boston High School. She enjoyed painting and visiting the Brockton Public Library. She was a longtime communicant of St. Margaret Church.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years. Two daughters and one son. Four grandchildren, two sisters and many nieces and nephews

Kane of East Falmouth June 20, 2003 Marguerite J. “Rita” (Croak) Kane 94 years. Wife of the late George L. Kane. Mother of Marguerite A. “Peg” Kane of East Falmouth and John R. Kane and his wife Alice of Leicester, MA. Grandmother of Cristin Kane of Worcester and Jared Kane of Yonkers, NY.

Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Tuesday at 9 am. Funeral Mass in St. Ann Church West Bridgewater at 10 am. Burial in Pine Hill West Bridgewater. Mrs. Kane died Friday evening at the Falmouth Hospital after a brief illness. She had been a resident of East Falmouth for the past 21 years, previously living in Brockton for many years.

She was born in Rockland daughter of the late James T. and Ellen (Sheehan) Croak. She was raised and educated in Rockland and Abington and was a graduate of Rockland High School and Boston University. Before her marriage she was a business teacher at Rockland High School. Later she was a teacher in the Wooden Shoe and Happy Hours private kindergartens in Brockton.

She was an avid reader and loved gardening, crossword puzzles and traveling. She had been a member of St. Margaret’s Women’s Guild in Brockton for many years.

She is survived by her daughter and son, a granddaughter and grandson and several nieces and nephews She was the sister of the late Timothy and Patrick Croak

Marjorie A. Irving

Marjorie A. (Lasota) Irving 57 years of Brockton died June 14, 2003 at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center after a lengthy illness. For the past several years she has been a resident of the Campello High Rise. She was born in Portland, Maine the daughter of the late Bruno and Rose (Klim) Lasota and was raised in Bridgewater. She was a graduate of Bridgewater-Raynham High School and also attended Stonehill College. Mrs. Irving had worked for Lincoln Trust Bank in Hingham and the Boy Scouts of America. She was a Star Trek fanatic and enjoyed studying architecture. She also enjoyed reading science fiction and romance novels. She is survived by her son James Irving and his wife Becky of California and a close friend Kellie McCarthy of Brockton. Graveside services were held in Melrose cemetery and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.

Kelley, mother of Gail Bisio of Raynham, Nancy Fogg and Lawrence Kelley both of Brockton. Mother of the late John W. Kelley Jr., sister of the late Joseph A. Selila, and great grandmother of the late Sydney Abroms.

Helen I. (Selila) Kelly, wife of over 60 years of the late retired Brockton Deputy Fire Chief John W. Kelley, died Friday at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center following a brief illness. She was 82.

Born and raised in Brockton, daughter of the late August and Mary (Pawlukiewicz) Selila, she was a 1936 graduate of Brockton High School. She was a devoted communicant of Our Lady of Ostrobrama Church until its closure, at which time she became a member of St. Edward Church, now St. Edith Stein.

After she retired as a supervisor from Herman’s Inc. of Avon, she enjoyed extensive traveling, gardening and reading. Because she and her husband returned often to Aruba, they formed many friendships over the years during their stays.

Mrs. Kelley is survived by two daughters, Gail Bisio of Raynham and Nancy Fogg of Brockton, a son Lawrence Kelley of Brockton, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late John W. Kelley Jr., sister of the late Joseph A. Selila, and great grandmother of the late Sydney Abroms.

Ernest G. Cohen
August 11, 2003

Mr. Ernest G. Cohen, of Brockton, 79 years, husband of the late Evelyn R. (Gibbons) Cohen, died Monday evening August 11, 2003, at the New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton after a brief illness. He was born in Brockton, son of the late Harry and Katherine (Richard) Cohen and lived most of his life in Brockton. From 1976 to 1997 he resided in Sanford, Florida. During WW II he served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater. Before his retirement he was a firefighter in the City of Brockton Fire Dept. at Station Four on the Eastside. He enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by one son, Jay Cohen of Plympton, four stepchildren, Karen T. Callahan of Hingham, Patricia A. Murphy of Brookline, Deirdre M. Riordon of Brockton and James J. Murphy of Pierson, Florida, 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and a dear friend Lillian Beckman. He was the brother of the late Madelaine Brady. A Graveside Service will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton.

Pauly W. Orton
August 11, 2003

Mrs. Pauly W. (Walker) Orton, of Weston, VT, died unexpectedly Monday morning at St. Joseph Manor, Brockton. She was born in Dorchester, raised in Mansfied and was a graduate of Mansfield High School, class of 1938. She was the daughter of the late Elmer and Lillian (Pierce) Waterman and wife of the late Paul L. Orton. She had been employed by the Mansfield Press/News as a proofreader in Mansfield, MA and during WWII she was employed by Bell Aircraft in Burlington, VT. She had been a resident of Weston, VT since 1946. She enjoyed gardening, photography, painting, making wooden silhouettes and dowsing for water.

She is survived by one daughter Susy Rosenbaum and her husband Andy of East Bridgewater and her late husband’s son Von Orton of Mansfield, her grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late June MacDonald and Gardner Walker. Private family services will be held following cremation.

Murphy of Cambridge, Charles D. Murphy and his wife Danielle of Long Island, NY and Nancy L. Blanchard of Bridgewater. Grandfather of Patrick F. and Susan K. Murphy, and Helen L. and Cory E. Blanchard. Brother of Dorothy Ulwick of Falmouth, Theresa Quirke of Braintree and James Murphy of Rockville, MD.

Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church Saturday at 10am. Burial in Union Cemetery. At the request of the family, visiting hours and burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 1309 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA 02446.

Francis P. Murphy, retired judge of Brockton, died Tuesday at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center, Brockton after a brief illness. He was born in Dorchester, son of the late Patrick F. and Helen A. (Glynn) Murphy. He attended Boston public schools and was a graduate of Suffolk University Law School. After passing the bar in 1964, he became a member of the Prince and Prince law firm of Brockton, eventually becoming a partner. He was appointed to the Plymouth County Probate Court in 1968 by Govenor John A. Volpe. He retired as a judge in 1987, then resumed his private law practice for a number of years. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association and the Plymouth County Bar Association. He was on the Board of Directors of the Howard Home for Men; had been active in Brockton politics for many years, and had served on the Brockton School Committee from 1957-1961. He was the Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the new Brockton High School. He was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He enjoyed golfing, reading, sports and was a history enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Gloria L. (Bent) Murphy, three sons Paul F. Murphy of Brockton, John P. Murphy of Cambridge and Charles D. Murphy of Long Island, NY, one daughter Nancy L. Blanchard of Bridgewater, four grandchildren, two sisters Dorothy Ulwick of Falmouth, Theresa Quirke of Braintree and one brother James Murphy of Rockville, MD. He also leaves many nieces and nephews

He was the brother of the late Msgr. John J. Murphy, Helen Maloney and Margaret Lord-Petty.

Mr. Spillane died Friday morning at his home after a lengthy illness. Born and raised in Brockton, he was a son of the late John R. and Helen C. (Sullivan) Spillane. He attended Brockton schools. During the Korean War he served in the United States Navy. He had been employed as a truck driver for many years for various trucking companies in the area. He was a resident of West Bridgewater from 1966-2002. He enjoyed riding horses and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a member of the Whitman VFW and the Teamsters Union, Local 653.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lula E. (Silva) Spillane, two sons Daniel J. Spillane Jr., of East Taunton, and Shawn E. Spillane of Wareham, three daughters Danielle C. Donovan of Berkley, Donna L. Smith of Wareham, and Helen C. Spillane of East Bridgewater, seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, one brother John J. Spillane of Whitman and Helen “Tootie” Pateline of Kingston.

Mr. Ruggles died Saturday evening at the Brockton Hospital after a period of failing health. He was born in Roxbury, a son of the late Frank and Florence M. (Abner) Ruggles. He attended Boston public schools and was a graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School. He had been employed as a winder by the Arrow Armature Company. He was a United States Navy Veteran of WWII serving in the European Theatre and he received the Purple Heart after being wounded during the Normandy invasion. He had played in small bands in the area as a drummer.

He is survived by his daughter Debra Shaw of Virginia, a brother Frank Ruggles of Avon and a niece Nancy Ruggles of Scituate, MA. He was the husband of the late Amaro Ruggles.

Haskell and her husband Charles and Claire Packard.

Philip W. Packard, age 69, died at home on Sunday, August 17, 2003, after a period of failing health. Born in Brockton, he was the son of the late Frederick E. and Helen B. (McLeod) Packard. Philip was a life-long resident of Brockton and attended Brockton schools and the Bristol County Agricultural School. Philip was associated with his family’s business, Packard Farms, for many years. He was a driver for Phoenix Spring Beverage Trucking Company and owner operator of Philip W. Packard, Inc., a commercial rubbish business, and of F&P; Trucking, Inc. In recent years he was employed by the Plymouth County Court System.

Philip enjoyed politics and was a strong supporter of his wife’s political career. He was a member of numerous local organizations including the Polish White Eagles, Ward 4 Improvement Association, Friends of the Brockton Council on Aging and Teamsters Local 653. Philip liked to travel, enjoyed camping, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

Philip is survived by his wife of 47 years, former Ward 4 City Councilor Viola G. (Good) Packard; a son Frederick E. Packard and his wife Laurie of Brockton; a daughter Valerie I. Packard and her dear friend Frank Gazerro of Brockton, two devoted grandchildren, Trevor and Samantha Packard, two sisters, Barbara Farnham of East Bridgewater and Helen Peaslee and her husband Hildreth of Lakeville, brother-in-law of Claire Packard of Brockton, John F. Good, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Brockton, Dorothy A. Haskell and her husband Charles of Wareham, and many nieces and nephews.

He was a brother of the late Herbert Packard and twin brother of the late Paul Edward Packard.

Eleanor T. Kent

Eleanor Theresa Kent, 87 years, of Stoughton and North Easton, died Tuesday at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center after a period of failing health. She was the beloved and devoted wife of Leo F. Kent.

She was born and raised in Stoughton, the daughter of the late Matthew and Eva (Karlonus) Grigas. She attended St. Mary’s School in Stoughton and graduated from Stoughton High School in 1934. She worked at the former Woman’s Apparel in Stoughton until she married Leo F. Kent when he returned from WWII after serving in the European theater and moved to North Easton in 1945. She raised and loved two sons, Phil Kent and the late Leo Michael Kent. She managed the cafeteria program at the former Easton Junior High School and was a poll worker until she retired. She received much joy from simple family pleasures; was an avid reader, and enjoyed cooking and knitting. She shared a mutual affection and love with her daughter-in-law, Del Kent, and became a second mother to her sole grandchild, Sean Michael Kent. During her prolonged illness, she knew she was surrounded by those who loved her. She is survived by her husband Leo F. Kent, one son Phil Kent and his wife Del of North Easton, one grandson Sean Michael Kent, many in-laws, nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Leo Michael Kent and sister of the late Julia Walker and Eva Grigas.

Doris R. Lovejoy

Mrs. Lovejoy died at Monday morning at the Marian Manor Nursing Home in South Boston after a brief illness. She was born in Brockton, daughter of the late Evangeliste and Delina M. (Harpin) Lacouture and remained a lifelong resident of the city.

She attended Brockton schools and worked in the shoe industry in Brockton for many years.

She had been a member of Sacred Heart Church and most recently St. Colman Church.

She is survived by her sister Marcelle Mercadante of Brockton and many nieces and nephews and two great nieces. She was the stepmother of Nancy Wagner and Beverly Katzel both of Wareham and the late Leona Maciel and Elaine Lovejoy. She was the foster mother of Donald and Elvis Coy. She was the wife of the late Franklin Johnson and Leon Lovejoy and sister of the late Gloria Soule
