Grandfather of Jonathan, Samuel, Benjamin and Molly Grace Shipman and Gerry Rooslet.

Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday at 8am. Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 9am. Burial in Melrose Cemetery. Visiting Hours Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8pm. Donations in his name may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Association, 220 Main Street, Natick MA 01760.

Lionel L. Houle, Jr. of Brockton, husband of Patricia (Colwell) Houle died at home Friday night after a period of ill health.

Born in Providence, RI son of the late Lionel L. and Irene (Veilleux) Houle, he was raised in West Warwick, RI. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1953 and went on to complete four years at the Illinois College of Optometry. He began his optical career at Montgomery Frost Lloyd’s in Boston, went on to manage the Community Opticians office in Brockton and retired from BJ’s Optical in 2001.

Mr. Houle also followed an active career in real estate where he was mainly associated with Edgar D. Fulton Realtors. He was a past president of the Brockton Taxpayers Association. In his free time he enjoyed the ocean, boating and jazz.

In addition to his wife he leaves five children, Denise Hill of West Palm Beach FL, Jeffrey and Brian Houle of Brockton, D’Anne Rooslet of Brockton and Michelle Shipman of Rutland MA and five grandchildren. He was the father of the late Jonathan Houle.

Richard M. Sharkey

Sharkey, of Brockton, April 4, 2004, Richard M. Sharkey, 76 years. Loving companion of Barbara Young, beloved brother of Charles and Barbara Sharkey and Joan Ivester and cousin of Elaine Rieter.

Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Thursday at 8am. Funeral Blessing in St. Edith Stein Church at 9am. Burial in Melrose Cemetery. Visiting Hours Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Richard’s memory to the Richard M. Sharkey Scholarship Fund c/o 10 Cambo Street, Brockton, MA 02301.

Richard Meador Sharkey, a life-long resident of Brockton, died unexpectedly at Good Samaritan Medical Center, Sunday morning April 4, 2004.

He was a WWII veteran and served in the US Army during the occupation of Japan. He was a 1945 graduate of Brockton High School. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Richard attended and graduated from a dental technician school in Boston in conjunction with the G.I. Bill.

He was employed by the Alden Products Company of Brockton as a sheet metal worker and later by the Brockton Public Library System, where he was a custodian for the four branch libraries until his retirement in 1991.

He was an avid reader interested in world history, railroading, and business, especially the circus and amusement world. He enjoyed sports, NASCAR auto racing, and gardening. During the past two summers he enjoyed walking from his home to the nearby Campanelli Stadium to watch the Brockton Rox baseball team play.

After he retired, he enjoyed writing. He had many of his articles about old-time Brockton and the Montello section of the city published by The Enterprise in the “By Our Readers” column. He was well-known as a regular volunteer at the Brockton Veteran’s Administration Hospital and at the Chapel of Our Savior at Westgate Mall where he formerly attended Mass most weekday mornings.

He was a devoted son of the late Charles and Helena (Peterson) Sharkey and a loving brother to Charles Sharkey and Barbara Sharkey both of Brockton and Joan Ivester of Sandwich. He is also survived by his dear companion Barbara Young of Brockton, a cousin, Elaine Rieter 6 nieces and nephews and 12 grand and great nieces and nephews.

Lambert Dehner, husband of Rita E. (McPhee) Dehner, died April 4, 2004, at his home in Brockton, Massachusetts after a period of failing health. Mr. Dehner was born in Burlington, Iowa, son of the late Leo and Celestine (Miller) Dehner. He attended parochial schools in Burlington, Iowa and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Saint Benedict’s College, Atchison, Kansas. He later did graduate work at Kansas State University and the University of Texas. He has resided in Brockton, Massachusetts since 1970 and worked as a Foreign Student Advisor at Northeastern University, Boston and later with various Social Service Agencies in Southeastern Massachusetts. Before moving to Brockton he worked at St. Benedict’s College in Atchison where he served as Dean of Students from 1963 to 1970. Prior to that he also was associated with the Benedictine Missions in Mexico City. While there he was actively engaged in the football program at National Polytechnic Institute from 1945 to 1953.

In addition to his wife of 33 years, he is survived by three brothers and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Leo and Bernard Dehner, and his two sisters Mary Katherine McNassar and Sister Ada Dehner, OCD. Surviving brothers include Reverend Eugene Dehner, OSB, Atchison Kansas; Reverend Philip Dehner OCSO, Conyers, Georgia and Ray Dehner, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Alice M. Yasutovich

Yasutovich, of Brockton, April 4, 2004, Alice M. (Uskevicz) Yasutovich, 79 years. Wife of the late Alexander Yasutovich, Jr. Mother of Joyce A. Pereira of Attleboro and Alan M. Yasutovich and his wife Mary Jo of Franklin. Grandfather of Timothy Stone, Tanya Pereira, Stacey and Bradley Yasutovich.

Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday at 8am. Funeral Mass in St. Patrick Church at 9am. Burial at a later date in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting Hours Tuesday 5-8pm.

Mrs. Yasutovich died Sunday morning at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center following a period of failing health. Born in Brockton, she was the daughter of the late John and Lauretta (Martin) Uskevicz. She had been a lifelong resident of Brockton, a graduate of Brockton High School, and had been employed in the shoe manufacturing industry and at Garland Mills. She enjoyed decorating cakes and playing Bingo at St. Nicholas and St. Edith Stein Churches.

She is survived by one son, Alan M. Yasutovich of Franklin, one daughter Joyce A. Pereira of Attleboro, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late John and Catherine Uskevicz

Johnson, of Bristol, CT, formerly of Brockton, April 5, 2004, Ann Marie (D’Amarino) (Clifford) Johnson, 60 years. Wife of Philip M. Johnson. Mother of John and Mark Clifford and Julie (Clifford) McCarthy. Daughter of Elizabeth M. (Farrell) D’Amarino, sister of Jean Larson, Betty Jane D’Amarino and Michael J. D’Amarino.

Ann Marie (D’Amarino) (Clifford) Johnson died Monday morning at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Hartford, CT after a lengthy illness. She was born in Brockton, MA a daughter of Elizabeth M. (Farrell) D’Amarino and the late Michael J. D’Amarino. She was a graduate of St. Patrick High School, Brockton, MA and the Brockton Business School. Prior to becoming a mother, she had been employed as an administrative assistant for a local insurance company in Brockton. She enjoyed baking, music and singing.

She is survived by her husband Philip M. Johnson of Bristol, CT, her mother Elizabeth M. (Farrell) D’Amarino of West Bridgewater, two sons John Clifford of Dedham, MA and Mark Clifford of Wrentham, MA and one daughter Julie (Clifford) McCarthy of Randolph, MA two grandchildren, two sisters Jean Larson of Dedham, MA, Betty Jane D’Amarino of Brockton and one brother Michael D’Amarino of Brockton.

Stephen W. Wrobleski
April 11, 2002

PORTSMOUTH, NH - Stephen W. Wrobleski, 83, husband of Stacia A. (Mizioch) Wrobleski, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, died Thursday evening in the Edgewood Center in Portsmouth following a short illness.

Born in Danvers on August 31, 1918, he was the son of the late Walter and Helen (Struzinski) Wroblewski.

A military retiree, he was a veteran of WWII and Korea, having served with the US Army for over twenty years, retiring in 1965 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. During WWII, he served in the European Theater in the Fourth Army Division, Third Army under Gen. George Patton. During the Korean War, he served in the First Calvary Division in 1951 to 1952, and followed with a second tour of duty in Korea in 1963 to 1964. During his military career, he was the recipient of the Bronze Star, The Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and numerous campaign and battle stars.

A resident of Portsmouth for the past 16 years, he came from Salem where he lived for 20 years. He was a member of both the St John The Baptist Church in Salem and the St James Church in Portsmouth.

Besides his wife, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage, he is survived by one brother, Sigmund Wroblewski of Danvers, one sister and brother-in-law, Regina and Alexander Kowalski of Salem, four nephews and their spouses, Paul Kowalski of Salem, Phillip (and Susan) Kowalski of Gloucester, John (and Maureen) Kingsley of Windham, NH, George (and Linda) Kingsley of Danvers and 5 great nephews. He was predeceased by one sister, Theresa Kingsley and one niece, Barbara (Kingsley) Shough.

His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at 9 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am at the St John The Baptist Church, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours in the funeral home on Monday, 5 to 8 pm. Burial is in St Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.

Elizabeth P. "Lib" Batchelder
August 03, 2002

SALEM - Elizabeth P. *Lib* Batchelder, 99, wife of Eliot P. *Batch* Batchelder, of Marblehead, formerly of Salem, died Saturday morning, August 3, 2002 in the Devereux House in Marblehead following a short illness.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Warren P. And Alice M. (Morency) Fitz.

Mrs Batchelder left Salem and moved to New York in the mid 1930's, and resided there for 40 years. She was employed in the office of the Benck Furniture Company in New York City and was a member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta. After her return to Salem in 1977, she resided in Salem until moving to the Devereux House in 1997. Prior to moving to New York, she played the organ during silent movies at the former Plaza Theater in Salem.

Besides her husband, with whom she shared 68 years of marriage, she is survived by two nephews, R. Douglas Fitz of Georgetown, John H. Batchelder of Northwood, NH, three nieces, Annah B. Dupuis and Mary Lee Goodwin, both of Marblehead, and Lois G. Ricker of Portland, Oregon. She was the sister of the late Hardy Fitz, Roland Fitz and Alice C. Sowle.

At her request, funeral services are private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. For those who desire, donations may be made in her memory to the charity of ones choice.

Diane E. Bushner, Ed.D
December 11, 2002

SALEM - Diane E. Bushner, Ed.D., age 56, of Salem, formerly of Somerville, an Associate Professor at Salem State College, died Wednesday morning, December 11, 2002 at her home following a long illness.

Born in Boston, she was the daughter of Helen A. (Andrew) Bushner of Salem and the late Eliot W. Bushner. She was a lifelong resident of Somerville until moving to Salem in 1998.

She was a graduate of Somerville High School in 1964 and received her BA in education from Lesley College in Cambridge in 1968. Attending classes at night, Dr. Bushner received her masters degree in education from Northeastern, a Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.G.S.) and her doctorate in education (Ed.D.) from Boston University.

Dr. Bushner began her career in education as a teacher with the Cambridge Public Schools. She continued as Assistant Director of Title I, and later Director of all Title I programs within the city. Moving on to Salem State College in 1993 as an Assistant Professor, she presently held the title of Associate Professor. She spent her summers directing the Reading Clinic for Children at the college and in 2000 coordinated the re-accreditation effort for Salem State.

She has written numerous articles, including her most recent publication, “The Image of Schools and Teachers in Recent American Fiction for Children and Adolescents, ” in the 2001 Papers: Explorations into Children’s Literature. She was frequently a presenter at conferences, including those of the International Reading Association, the New England Reading Association, and the Massachusetts Reading Association. With a colleague, Dr. Bushner was awarded the 1996 International Reading Association Elva Knight Research Grant. She was also the recipient of the Massachusetts Reading Association 1995 Sylvia D. Brown Scholarship for her research study. She volunteered throughout New England for the Greater Boston Reading Council (GBC) and as past president of the Massachusetts Association of College and University Reading Educators (MACURE). This past October, she was awarded the Greater Boston Council of the International Reading Association “Celebrate Literacy Award” for 2003. Throughout her life, she has been instrumental in promoting literacy for all children. She was always seeking ways to help urban schools teach reading successfully in the elementary grades so all children learn to read and become readers for life. She was deeply committed to the children and truly made a difference.

Besides her mother, with whom she resided, Dr. Bushner is survived by several cousins.

Her funeral service will be held Monday, December 16, 2002 at 10 am at the Grace Church, 385 Essex St., Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Sunday, 2 to 4 pm at the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Burial is in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Salem State College Foundation, 352 Lafayette St., Salem, MA 01970.

F. Louise Royal

SALEM - F. Louise (Campbell) Royal, 69, wife of the late Louis L. Royal, of Salem, died Sunday morning, June 1, 2003, in the Salem Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Hilda M. (Harrison) Campbell and was a lifelong resident of the city.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the City of Salem for over 15 years, first as a nursing assistant at the former Salem Health Hospital, and later as a switchboard operator at the Shaughnessy-Kaplan Hospital.

Mrs. Royal is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Louis G. & Jennifer Royal of Lenox Township, Michigan, Ronald C. Royal of Salem, one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia A. and Raymond St. Pierre of Haverhill, five grandchildren, Christen St. Pierre and Nicholas St. Pierre, both of Haverhill, Louis W. Royal of Peabody, George Alurac, of Lenox Township, Michigan, Matthew R. Royal of Salem, and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral service will be held Thursday, June 5, 2003 at 9 AM in the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Wednesday, 4 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Hospice of The North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923, or to the American Diabetes Association, 1 Bromfield St., Suite 5, Boston, MA 02108.

Bronislawa "Blanche" (Olak) Chalupa
December 02, 2003

SALEM - Bronislawa “Blanche” (Olak) Chalupa, 83, of Salem, died Tuesday, December, 2, 2003 in a local nursing home following a brief illness.

Born in Poland, she was the daughter of the late Jozef and Wielka (Kurzna) Olak. She was a resident of Salem and parishioner of the St. John The Baptist church since coming to the United States in 1950.

Prior to her retirement in 1986, she was employed at the Salem Hospital for 26 years.

Mrs. Chalupa is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Jean Porazinski of Salem, John and Kim Porazinski of Beverly, one daughter, Ann Schultz of Middletown, CT, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held Saturday, December 6, 2003, at 9 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am at the St. John The Baptist Church, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours are Friday, 4 to 8 pm. Burial is in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. For those who desire, donations may be made in her memory to the St. John The Baptist Church, 28 St. Peter St., Salem, MA 01970.

Alexander W. Starzec
January 23, 2004

WEBSTER – Alexander W. Starzec, 51, of 22 Point Pleasant Road, passed on, Friday, January 23, in Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after being stricken ill.

He leaves 2 sons, William A. Starzec of North Grosvenordale, CT, and Shaun P. Benton of Webster; his mother, Annette R. (Arpin) Starzec of Webster; his fiancee, Chantelle M. St.Onge, with whom he lived; a granddaughter, Natalie Grace Benton of Webster; aunts and uncles, nephews and nieces, and cousins.

He was born in Webster, son of William A. Starzec, the former commissioner of agriculture of Massachusetts and also a former state representative, who passed away in 2001. He graduated from Bartlett High School in 1970.

Mr. Starzec owned and operated Anacoda Ltd, and was actively involved in the beverage industry. He was the president of the former family-owned Webster Bottling Co. He also worked for Packaging Technical Service in Oxford and for the 7-UP Company of Philadelphia.

He was a past president of the New England Independent Bottlers Assn., vice-chairman of gourmet affairs for the Mass. Soft Drink Assn. He was a member of the National Soft Drink Assn., the National Beverage Packaging Assn., and the National Bottled Water Assn. He was also a member of the T.S.K.K. and the P.A.C.C. He was an avid car and boat enthusiast and enjoyed his times on Webster lake.

Calling hours will be from 6:00 to 9:00 PM Tuesday, January 27, in the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School Street, where a funeral service will be conducted at 8:30 PM. A celebration of Mr. Starzec’s life will be held at the Colonial Club Restaurant and Pub, 290 Thompson Road, on Wednesday, January 28, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM
