Francis Finnell, Boston officer for 30 years
Francis A. Finnell, 85, who investigated crimes and patrolled the streets of Roxbury for 30 years as a no-nonsense Boston cop, died Saturday in his Brewster home. "He was just a loyal guy without pretense who didn't suffer fools gladly. You always knew where you stood with him, " said his son Francis J., of Randolph. A big man who knew how to use size to his advantage, Mr. Finnell played fullback on the Hyde Park High School football team and in the Boston Park League after graduation. His son says Mr. Finnell was offered a tryout by the Providence College football team, but knew he was no student, so he went to work for Stanley Newman Co. in Cambridge, fixing leaky roofs on local buildings. For years before it was torn down, he often pointed out the Hotel Manger at North Station (later the Hotel Madison) as the tallest building he had worked on. Mr. Finnell served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was stationed at Dow Field in Bangor, Maine, waiting to be shipped overseas, when a sergeant entered his barracks and asked, "Does anybody here weigh more than 190 pounds?" Mr. Finnell raised his hand and became a military policemen. When he was stationed in Africa, another sergeant came into another barracks and asked, "Does anybody here know how to drive a truck?" Mr. Finnell answered in the affirmative and was soon driving in Africa and Europe for a unit that built and maintained airfields. After the war, he returned to the Newman Co., but took the police examination in 1951 because of his experience with the military police. Mr. Finnell walked a beat in Roxbury until the mid-1960s, when he became a plainclothes investigator. He was a stickler for honesty and accounted for every penny he made on paid details, even when he was paid in cash. "He kept meticulous records and claimed it all on his income tax, " said his son, adding that his father expected others to do the same. Mr. Finnell became a detective in 1970 and partnered for years with the late Frank McLean. "They hit it off right away, " said Francis Finnell. "They were like-minded." Mr. Finnell was commended in 1975 for his part in the investigation of the murder of a cabdriver in Roxbury. In 1978, he received widespread publicity for recovering several 15th-century books that had been stolen from Simmons College. "He never spoke about his exploits at work, " said his son. "To him, it was his job. He always said, `I was just doing my job, ' or `That's what they pay me for."' Mr. Finnell enjoyed spending time with his family. "He saw so much in Roxbury, I think when he wasn't working he just wanted to be home with his family, " said Francis Finnell. "He was the epitome of the quiet man, " his other son, William E. of Norwood, said yesterday. "He could be an abrupt, rough type of guy and some of my friends were intimidated by him, but I'll always remember him as a gentle family man." He was also a man who liked a good argument. "He'd argue for hours, " said his childhood friend, Thomas "Scoop" Broderick of Quincy. "And he was never wrong, at least in his opinion. I'd never argue with him unless I had something in black or white, a news clipping or something, to prove that I was right." Broderick and Mr. Finnell had been friends since they were 12-year-old neighbors in Roslindale. They also worked at the Newman Co. together. "He had a level head and I was the wise guy, " said Broderick. "He kept me out of a lot of trouble. I think if it wasn't for him, I'd have ended up jail." Besides his sons, Mr. Finnell leaves his wife, Irene (Downing); a daughter, Susan B. Tolman of Brighton; and nine grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Sacred Heart Church in Roslindale. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery in West Roxbury.
