PELHAM, NH - Helen B. Ford, 83, the former owner of Charme Beauty Salon in Tewksbury, died Sunday evening, March 24, at the Intergrated Health Services Nursing Care Center in Derry, NH, after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Orville J. Ford, who died in 1983.

She was born in Boston, June 1, 1918, the only child of Frederick C. and Anna C. (Gibbons) Bragg. She was raised in Winthrop, and lived in Tewksbury from 1958 until 1985. She had lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Pelham since 1985.

She was an active member of the Pelham Senior Citizen Center.

She owned Charme Beauty Salon, at the corner of Shawsheen and Main Streets in Tewksbury. The salon building was located on the site of the Oakdale Mall.

Mrs. Ford was a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Lowell. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy J. and Lester F. Dixon of Pelham, a son and daughter-in-law, Frederick C. and Roberta (Guilmette) Ford of Pelham, four grandchildren, Craig F. Ford of Lowell, Dawn F. Enwright of Londonderry, NH, Janathan M. Dixon of Hudson, NH, Thomas F. Dixon of Pelham, NH, and eight great grandchildren, Derek, Jarrod, Kirsten, Brianna, Brandon, Cullen, Devyn, and Jonathan Jr.

Her funeral service was held Wednesday March 26 in the funeral home. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery.

Bruno "Tony" Pupa
March 25, 2002

...City of Newton’s Union Business Agent; 64

TEWKSBURY - Bruno Anthony “Tony” Pupa, 64, the Business Agent for Local 544 in Newton, died Monday evening, March 25, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was husband of the late Phyllis A. (Desper) Pupa, who died in 1988.

He was born in Newton, Feb. 7, 1938, a son of the late Andrew D. and Elizabeth (Nordbloom) Pupa. He was raised in Wilmington, and graduated from Wilmington High School in 1955.

His entire career was with the City of Newton, Department of Public Works.

He was active at St. William’s Church, as a former member of the Men’s Club, and in earlier years, St. William’s Drill Team. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4336 in Tewksbury.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Dennis DeCoster of Tewksbury, Barbarajean and Terry W. Jesmer of Salem NH, a son and daughter-in-law, Andrew D. and Nora (Wood) Pupa of Tewksbury, two brothers, Gerald Pupa of Wilmington, Richard Borghetti of Waltham, a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Dillon of Elliot, ME, and six grandchildren, Amy and Renee DeCoster, Jennifer, Sarah, Anthony D., and Andrew F. Pupa.

His Funeral Service was held Friday, Mar. 28, in St. William’s Church, followed by interment in Tewksbury Cemetery.

Memorials to the Epilepsy Foundation, 95 Berkley St. Suite 409, Boston, MA 02116 or the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 1111 Stewart Ave, Bethpage, NY 11714 will be appreciated.

Mary R. Mackey

...well known Tewksbury family; 70

TEWKSBURY - Mary Rose (King) Mackey, age 70, died Thursday evening, May 9, at her home following a lengthy battle with cancer. She was the wife of retired Tewksbury Police Lieutenant, Richard J. “Dick” Mackey, with whom she would have celebrated a 52nd wedding anniversary on October 28th.

She was born in Chelsea, September 24, 1931, a daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Powers) King, but was a lifelong Tewksbury resident. She had divided her time between Vero Beach, Florida, and Tewksbury for the past 13 years.

She was a member of Tewksbury High School’s graduating class of 1950, and was a lifelong communicant of St. William’s Church.

She was also active in the community as a volunteer at Tewksbury Hospital.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tewksbury Police Chief John R. and his wife Barbara (Dionne) Mackey and Tewksbury Fire Department Captain Richard “Rick” and his wife Valerie (Conserva) Mackey all of Tewksbury, five grandchildren, Heather Godin, Colleen, Cristen, Brian and Laura Mackey all of Tewksbury, a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and William Webber of Westboro, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Irene King of Texas, John “Jack” and Elizabeth “Betty” King of Tewksbury, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, May 14, in St. William’s Church. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery.

Robert F. Maher
May 12, 2002

...retired from Palmer & Parker Lumber; age 78

TEWKSBURY - Robert F. Maher, 78, a Tewksbury resident for seven decades, died Sunday afternoon, May 12, at his home after a brief illness. He was the husband of Katherine M. “Kay” (Hall) Maher, with whom he had celebrated a 42nd wedding anniversary this past August 29th.

He was born in Malden, March 18, 1924, a son of the late Joseph and Matilda (MacDonald) Maher, and lived for his first 6 years in Malden. His family then moved to Tewksbury in 1930, where he had remained throughout his life.

During WWII, he served in the US Army. He earned the Victory and Good Conduct Medals, and the American Theater, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbons.

He began his career at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Insurance Company in Boston, worked for Sears and Roebuck, and retired from Palmer and Parker Lumber Company in Tewksbury.

He was a communicant of St. Dorothy’s Church in Wilmington, and was a life member of the Tewksbury D.A.V. Post 110. In his later years he was active in the Tewksbury Golden Age Club, and a frequent visitor to the Tewksbury Senior Drop-In Center, where he was active in Dance and Bingo.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa (Secchiaroli) Maher of Tewksbury, a brother and sister-in-law, John and Insuk “Sandy” Maher of Tewksbury several nieces and nephews, including Unmi Maher of Tewksbury, Patricia Hall of R.I., and several cousins including Joseph and Dorothy Cormier of Tewksbury.

His Funeral Mass was held Thursday, May 16, in St. Dorothy’s Church. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery.

Memorials to the Tewksbury Senior Center, Building Fund, 175 Chandler St. Tewksbury, MA 01876 will be appreciated.

Francis J. Dugan
May 12, 2002

... Advertizing Specialist, formerly of Tewksbury; 79

CARY, N.C. - Francis J. Dugan, 79, a longtime Tewksbury resident, died Sunday, May 12, at the Rex Healthcare Center in Raleigh, N.C., after a brief illness. He was the husband of Rita Yvette (Bedard) Dugan, with whom he had celebrated a 48th wedding anniversary this past October 24th.

He was born in Lowell, June 7, 1922, the only child of the late John and Emma Veronica (Bracewell) Dugan. He was raised and educated in Lowell, and lived in Tewksbury from 1957 until moving to N.C. last December. He graduated from the University of Missouri's School of Journalism in 1951, and had earlier attended U-Mass Amherst.

From 1943 until 1946, he served stateside and in Hawaii with the U.S.M.C.

He was employed as a Advertizing and Sales Specialist for a number of businesses and newspapers including Bay State Business and 128 World Newspaper, Lynn Item, Nashua Telegraph, Wakefield Item, Chelsea Record, Medford Mercury, and Melrose Evening News newspapers. In his earlier years he had also worked for Brown and Bigelow in the Bridgeport, Conn. Offfice. He had also worked for the City of Lowell's Social Services Department.

He was an active communicant of St. William's Church in Tewksbury, where he headed several of the church's fund raising efforts.

He was also a member of the Tewksbury American Legion Post 259. He was an avid reader, tennis player and home repairman.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ann Marie and William H. Williams Jr of Cary, N.C., a son and daughter-in-law, Francis J. and Tracy (Prendable) Dugan Jr. of Methuen, and three grandchildren, Ryan, Matthew, and Daniel Dugan, and one aunt Florence Young of Lowell. He was also father of the late Paul J. Dugan, and grandfather of the late Angelica Williams.

His Funeral Mass was held Saturday, May 18, in St. William's Church. Following cremation, interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701 will be appreciated.

Colin Edwards
May 12, 2002

...emigrated from England in 1992; 71

TEWKSBURY - Colin Edwards, 71, a resident of both the United Kingdom and the U.S., died unexpectedly Sunday, May 12, at the Lowell General Hospital. He was the husband of Dorothy E. “Dolly” (Cecchini-Gizzi) Edwards, with whom he would have celebrated a 10th year anniversary on May 24th.

He was born in Ovalston, England, April 1, 1931, and lived the greater part of his life in Chester, England. He emigrated to the U.S. to marry Dolly in 1992, and held dual citizenship in the U.K. and the U.S.

During WWII, he served in the Royal Army’s 149th battery, of the 64th Regiment.

He was retired from B.I.C.C. cable company in the U.K.

In England, he was a member of St. Peter’s of Waverton Church Choir, and remained active in the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He participated in two G & S touring company productions in Portsmouth, NH, and Connecticut.

He was an accomplished landscape gardener and was an avid reader. He also volunteered to read for the blind with the Greater Lowell Association for the Blind.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, David Michael and his wife Jill (Powell) Edwards of Chester, U.K., Ian Richard Edwards of Tewksbury, MA, a daughter and son-in-law, Anne Elizabeth Edwards and her husband Michael Hales of Manchester, U.K., five step children, Robert C. and his wife Denise (Poverchuk) Gizzi of Billerica, Steven C. Gizzi of Tewksbury, Debra A. and her husband Paul Jenkins of Danville, NH, Anthony J. and his wife Goldie (DeLorne) Gizzi of Lowell, Leah M. Gizzi and her spouse John Storch of Lake Worth, Fla, 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

His funeral service was held Thursday evening, May 16 in the funeral home. Following cremation, he will return to England for committal.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to R.A.R.A., 295 High St., Lowell, MA 01852, will be appreciated.

Carlos M. Fernandez

TEWKSBURY - Carlos M. Fernandez, age 61, died Sunday, May 12, at the Tewksbury Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, October 3, 1940, a son of Cecilio and Arcadia (Narvaes) Fernandez, and had lived the greater part of his life in Springfield and Lowell, Mass.

In Puerto Rico he was employed in food service for the school department. In Lowell he worked for Roche Brothers Barrel Company.

He is survived by two daughters, Frances A. Fernandez and Carmen V. Fernandez both of Springfield, four grandchildren, and several brothers and sisters who remain in Puerto Rico.

His Funeral service was held Saturday, May 18 in the funeral home. Following cremation, Mr. Fernandez will return to Puerto Rico for final disposition.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Tewksbury Hospital "Bus Fund" 365 East St. Tewksbury, MA 01876 will be appreciated.

Bernadette "Irish" Doucette
May 15, 2002

...among Wang’s first employees; 83

TEWKSBURY - Bernadette M. “Irish” (Murphy) Doucette, age 83, died Wednesday morning, May 15, at her Tewksbury home, following a two month battle with cancer. She was the wife of the late John H. Doucette, who died December 9, 1999.

She was born in Boston, February 11, 1919, a daughter of the late Frederick and Ellen (O’Brien) Murphy, and was raised in Roxbury. She lived in Somerville before moving to Tewksbury in 1958.

She was among the first employees of Wang Laboratories when they opened their manufacturing division in Tewksbury. She had also worked at the former Oaks Restaurant in Tewksbury.

She was a communicant of St. William’s Church in Tewksbury.

She is survived by two daughters, Eleanor Willett of Wareham, Donna Flanagan of Lebonan, Maine, two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Carolyn (Geddes) Doucette of Londonderry, NH, John “Jack” and Eugenia (Deneau) Doucette of Fitzwilliam, NH, 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, including Richard Medeiros of Wilmington.

Her Funeral Mass was held Saturday, May 18, in St. William’s Church. Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorials to assist the poor of the Parish of St. William’s, 1351 Main St. Tewksbury, MA 01876 will be appreciated.

Ann L. (Riley) Grant
May 20, 2002

TEWKSBURY - Anne L. (Ranberg - Riley) Grant, age 86, died Monday evening, May 20, at the Northwood Nursing Care Center in Lowell. She was wife of the late Donald Grant, and the late Joseph H. Riley Jr.

She was born in Somerville, Mass., a daughter of the late August and Loretta (Diehl) Ranberg. She was raised in Medford, where she had lived before moving to Tewksbury in 1955.

She graduated from Fisher Junior College’s accounting program. In her earlier years, she was a partner at Crystal Lunch in Wakefield, and later worked for Offset Printers in Lowell. She retired from Alarm Systems Company in Woburn.

In her later years, she was active at the Tewksbury Senior Drop-in Center, and was also active in the Tewksbury Golden Age Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara A. Dyment and her dear friend Joseph DelGrosso of Lowell, two sons, Joseph H. Riley III and his dear friend Maureen Judd of Lowell, Thomas C. and his wife Deborah (Greenwood) Riley of Gilford, NH, two sisters, Beatrice Healey of Medford, Ruth Marebella of Deleware, three brothers, Philip Ranberg of Penn., Robert Ranberg of N.J., Charles Ranberg of Calif., five grandchildren, Joseph, Robert, Lisa, Timothy and Nathan, and two great grandchildren, Stephanie and Kevin, and many nieces and nephews. She was also sister of the late Joseph “Buster” Ranberg.

Her Funeral Mass was held Friday, May 24, in St. William’s Church. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery.

Memorials to the Tewksbury Senior Center Building Fund, c/o Tewksbury Sr. Drop-in Center, 175 Chandler St. Tewksbury, MA 01876 will be appreciated.

Deborah J. Monahan

...IRS Employee from Tewksbury; 45

TEWKSBURY - Deborah J. (Bowser) Monahan, 45, an active supporter of youth sports in Tewksbury died Friday afternoon, May 24, at the Mass General Hospital in Boston, after suffering an brain aneurysm four weeks ago. She was the wife of John P. Monahan, with whom she would have celebrated a 25th wedding anniversary this August 7th.

She was born in Cambridge, Mass, on August 21, 1956, a daughter of Tina (Cicero) Bowser of Derry, NH, and the late George R. Bowser. She was raised in Cambridge, and lived in Chelsea, before moving to Tewksbury 15 years ago. She graduated from Chelsea High School in 1974.

She was active in Tewksbury Youth Soccer and Hockey, ran the snack bar at the Tewksbury Soccer fields, and also worked at the Janus Hockey Rink in Lowell while she was raising her family. She also enjoyed home decorative crafting and plastic canvas projects.

She became an employee of the I.R.S. in Andover 3 years ago, and was working when she suffered her aneurysm.

Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by a son, Kevin P. Monahan of Tewksbury, a daughter, Megan M. Monahan of Tewksbury, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Darlene and Robert Ligon of NH, Doreen and Frank Tremblay of Fla., and aunt and uncle, Theresa and Charles Bowser of Tewksbury, a father-in-law, Martin Monahan of Amesbury, three sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Martin and Maureen (Silas) Monahan Jr. of Chelsea, Paul and Deborah (Sullivan) Monahan of Lowell, Florence and Daniel Iacona of Amesbury, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, May 29, in St. William’s Church. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery.

Memorials to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, 295 Cambridge st. Boston, MA 02114 will be appreciated.
