Albert L. Doherty
March 31, 2003

Albert L. Doherty, age 87, died March 31st at his country home after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Alice M. (Brown) Doherty. A son, Alan Doherty of Middleboro; a brother, Charles W. Doherty of North Abington; a sister, Mary F. Angie of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandsons: Alan R. Doherty of Marston Mills, Robert W. Doherty of Bridgewater and James M. Doherty of Middleboro, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews survive him. He was the brother of the late Harold F., Michael F., Richard A., Cecilia M. and Sister Anna Elizabeth Doherty and Muriel L. Lewis.

Born October 4, 1915, in North Abington, son of the late Michael “Frank” Doherty and Mary “Mae” (LaBrache), he spent more than half his life as an Abington resident before moving to the 9-acre farm in Plympton where he spent his last 35 years.

Mr. Doherty, a retired crew chief for the Allen Wheeler Company in southern Massachusetts, a subcontractor for Brockton Gas Company, laid and repaired gas pipes. He was also employed by the National Wool Co., in Boston for 20 years. He was one of a few people in the country who graded wool fleeces for ranchers before selling their spring shearing into the open market. His work required considerable travel from spring until late summer and sometimes required him to live in old-fashioned bunkhouses and to eat out of chuckwagons, when he was grading wool at the shearing pins on the open range. His wife and son would accompany him on many of these trips.

During World War II, he was drafted as a special police officer for the city of Boston and spent many weekends guarding warehouses in the D Street area of South Boston.

When he was 62, he retired to his nine-acre farm in Plympton, where he became well known for his Route 58 farm stand and the fresh vegetables sold there.

When the growing season ended and cold weather set in, he headed into the woods and gathered greens, which he made into holiday wreaths, sprays and garland.

He would often brag about planting 500 to 750 tomato plants on a good year while making 300 to 500 wreaths for Christmas.

Mr. Doherty was a member and supporter of the Plympton First Congregational Church.

Upon the request of the family there are no visiting hours. The Rev. Mary Donnellan will conduct a memorial service at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 12th, at the First Congregational Church, Main Street (Route 58), Plympton Center.

Adolph Balevicz
March 16, 2003

Adolph M. Balevicz, March 16, 2003, age 91, resident of Abington the past 65 years, formerly of Brockton. Husband of the late Helen B. (Dzikiewicz) Balevicz. Brother-in-law of Charles R. Tautkus of Abington. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Adolph M. Balevicz, 91, passed away at the Colonial Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Weymouth following a short illness. Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, he attended the Brockton School System.

Prior to his retirement he worked as a manager for a liquor store in Braintree. He was a member of the North Abington Polish Club and past member of the Whitman Sportsman’s Club.

He was a Navy veteran and served during WW II. This article appeared in the military “FORE AND AFT’ publication - Chief of the Week.

Adolph M. Balevicz, TMC, is our “Chief of the week” for this edition. The chief was born 26 August 1911 in Brockton, Mass. In December ’29, at the age of 18 he enlisted in the Navy and went through three months boot at Newport, Rhode Island. Fresh out of Recruit Training, he was sent to the Battleship Pennsylvania and started his Navy career on the deck force.

Then transferred to the Dobbin, a Destroyer Tender, Adolph was put into the Squadron Flag and finally became coxswain of the Admiral’s Barge. During this tour of duty, the chief saw many days of getting underway aboard a score of destroyers. The year of '36 took him aboard the Cruiser Raleigh, and the “salty seaman” at that time, began working in the sail locker. The Raleigh sailed to Europe during the Spanish Revolution, and helped evacuate all American refugees.

The chief first started striking for TM after he was sent to Philly to help recommission the USS Gilmer (DD-233). On board this four stacker, he participated in neutrality patrols along the east coast. The Bureau then decided to send the Gilmer to the west coast for further duty in Alaska.

After all this time, the chief decided to put in for sub school. He reported to New London, Conn., and out of school reported aboard the USS Harder for duty. This took him to duty in the patrol zone off the coast of Japan. From the Harder, the chief then saw duty on two other subs; the USS Becuna, and the USS Besugo. Adolph made TMC in 1942 while aboard the Harder.

Hoping for some shore duty, the chief’s wish was granted. In December ’45 he was transferred to Brockton, Massachusetts, for recruiting duty. From recruiting duty he went to General Line School in Newport as an instructor. This finished his tour of shore duty and in 1948 he reported to the Boston Navy Yard for duty aboard the USS Beatty (DD-756). This “can” took frequent trips south to Guantanomo Bay and then to Europe.

In May ’49, Chief Balevicz went to the Fargo building for separation. Then after 13 months vacation, he was called back to active duty and sent to Recruit Training Command, Newport. Before he was assigned a company of boots, the Command was closed and moved to Bainbridge, Maryland. So then the Chief was sent to the Provost Marshal Headquarters and worked as Brig Warden. His next duty station was the Underwater Ordnance Station on Gould Island for duty involving the testing and evaluation of all makes of torpedoes.

Then when the Markab finally realized that they needed the supervision of the chief they sent for him, and he reported aboard on 18 December 1952.

The chief will be getting released for the second time this coming August, and will be very glad to live the rest of his days with his wife, Helen. There’s a chance you might see him on the fantail some warm duty night doing a little fishing, for he favors fishing and boating over all sports. Think it’s old age creeping up? (FORE AND AFT Publication - Chief of the Week)
