Myrtle M. McGrath
May 19, 2003

Myrtle M. McGrath, 76, of Abington, formerly of Medford, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Colony House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness.

Born in Medford, daughter of the late John and Ester MacInnis, she was a graduate of Medford High School.

She lived in Medford for 71 years before moving to Abington five years ago.

Mrs. McGrath is survived by her husband, J. Leo McGrath and a daughter, Susan Earle of Abington. In addition, she is survived by her five grandchildren: Aimee, Shaughn, Emily, Joshua and Allison Earle, all of Abington.

Her funeral will be at 8:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 22, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 A.M. in St. Bridget's Church, 455 Plymouth Street, Abington. Rev. Lou Palmieri will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 P.M.

Christopher M. Cox
June 18, 2003

Christopher M. Cox, age 18, of Abington, died on Wednesday, June 18, in an automobile accident.

He was a recent graduate of Abington High School, where he played varsity baseball. He was planning to attend the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in the fall.

Christopher worked for Fallon Ambulance in Milton the past few years and planned to obtain his emergency medical technician and paramedics licenses.

He had previously worked at Sub Galley in Abington.

He was an avid reader who loved history and airplanes.

He was born in Weymouth and was a lifelong resident of Abington.

He is survived by his parents, Michael and Beverly (Dickie) Cox of Abington; two brothers, Adam Cox and David Cox, both of Abington; his grandparents, Marianne (Wroble) Cox of Whitman, and Richard and Mildred Dickie of Pembroke; aunts and uncles, John and Lynne Best of Carver, Martin and Gail Lantieri of Kingston, Brian Dickie of Plympton, Gerard and Catherine Cox of Arlington, Virginia, and Timothy and Joy Cox of Evergreen, Colorado; and eleven cousins. He was also the grandson of the late Reginald Cox.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 A.M. on Monday, June 23, at St. Bridget's Church, 455 Plymouth Street (Route 58), ABINGTON. Burial will be in St. James cemetery in Whitman.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 3:00 - 7:00 P.M.

Bruce J. Stonkus
June 24, 2003

Bruce J. Stonkus, June 24, 2003, age 56, resident of Abington the past twenty-five years, formerly of Braintree. Survived by two brothers: Paul G. Stonkus of Ohio and Brian D. Stonkus of Blackstone, MA.

Bruce passed away at the Brockton Hospital following a long illness. Born in Weymouth, he was the son of the late Albert P. and Isabelle C. (Murphy) Stonkus. He was a graduate of Braintree High School Class of 1965 and Wentworth Institute in 1972.

Prior to Bruce's disability, he was a mechanics engineer for Parco Engineering Company in Medfield, MA.

He was a member of the North Abington Polish Club.

Bruce served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, serving on the USS Dewey. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.

Funeral service will be held at the Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, (just off Route 58 near North School), ABINGTON, on Friday, June 27, at 10:30 A.M. Interment will take place at a later time at Blue Hill cemetery in Braintree.

Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, June 26, 2003, from 7:00 - 9:00 P.M.

Norma C. Claflin
June 22, 2003

Norma C. Claflin, June 22, 2003, age 90, passed away at the Mildred Alford Nursing Home in Abington following a long illness.

Born in Abington, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Sarah (Childs) Claflin. She was a graduate of Abington High School Class of 1930 and the Berdette Business School. She was a lifelong resident of Abington.

A memorial graveside service will be held at Mt. Vernon cemetery (across from the Quealy & Son Funeral Home) in Abington, on Friday, June 27, at 11:30 A.M. Pastor Paul Taylor will officiate.

Louis McIver
June 11, 2003

Louis McIver, June 11, 2003, of Rockland, formerly of Abington, passed away after a short illness. He was 82 years old and for the past two years he was a resident of the South Shore Nursing Facility in Rockland. Louis McIver lived in Abington for forty-seven years.

Born in Brockton, he was the son of the late William and Kathleen (Reardon) McIver. He had been employed by Brothers Milk of North Quincy, Whiting Milk of Braintree, and also until his retirement, was an interstate truck driver for Rumford Litho of Abington. Mr. McIver was a past member of the North Quincy Knights of Columbus.

Louis McIver was the beloved husband of Emily M. (Feehily) McIver, loving father of Anne Meadows and her husband, William, of Wells, Maine, Donna Stevens and her husband, Frederick, Claire Foley and her husband, John, Robert McIver and his wife, Karen, and Thomas McIver, all of Abington. Brother of Eleanor McIver of Norwell and the late Ruth McIver, Louise White, William McIver, and Leo McIver. Also survived by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation took place on Sunday, June 15, 2003, from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 P.M. A Funeral Mass was held at St. Bridget's Church in Abington on Monday, June 16, 2003 at 9:00 A.M. Interment took place at St. Patrick's cemetery in Rockland.

Mary A. (Rudvilovitch) Hermanson
June 11, 2003

Mary A. (Rudvilovitch) Hermanson, June 11, 2003, age 87, formerly of Abington, passed away at the Windemere Nursing Home on Martha's Vineyard, following a long illness. She was a resident of Martha's Vineyard for the past five years.
Born in Boston, she was the daughter of Michael and Ani (Yeresewich) Rudilovitch. She attended the Norwood School system. Mary Hermanson was a homemaker and former member of the Abington Senior Citizens.

Survived by a daughter, Arlene M. MacKenzie of Hull; grandmother of Scott MacKenzie and Michele MacKenzie-Curley, both of New Hampshire, Craig MacKenzie of Martha's Vineyard and Nicole Gouvia of So. Plymouth. Also survived by six great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held on Friday, June 13, 2003, from 7 - 9 P.M. A Funeral Mass at St. Bridget's Church in Abington was celebrated on Saturday, June 14, 2003. Interment took place in the family lot at Fairview cemetery in Boston, MA.

Charles F. "Pappy" Whitman Sr.
July 01, 2003

Charles F. “Pappy” Whitman Sr., 83, a lifelong resident of Abington, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of Barbara (Damon) Whitman. Barbara and Charlie recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 31st.
Born in Abington, son of the late Abington Fire Chief Charles F. Whitman Jr. and the late Ida (Battles), he attended Abington schools.

Charles F. "Pappy" Whitman Sr. was an Abington firefighter for 40 years, retiring in 1974. He was also a custodian for the North School and a firefighter for Fore River Shipyard.

He was past president and present vice president of the Abington Senior Citizens Association, a memorial trustee member for 30 years and Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 42 for 20 years.

He received the Special Service Award for exceptional service for the town of Abington, a Fire Department plaque for many years of service and the Abington Best award.

Charlie was a charter member of the Night Before the 4th Committee, assistant district administrator for District 8 Little League, a member of Abington Firefighters Local 2080 and a charter member of the International Association of Firefighters Local 2080.

He enjoyed fishing and taking pictures.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by three sons, Charles F. Whitman Jr. (and wife, Peggy) and Donald F. Whitman, both of Abington, and Richard A. Whitman (and wife, Karen) of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a sister, Virginia Alden of Hanson; a brother, Ernest A. Whitman of Centerville; 13 grandchildren - April & Johnathan Castle of Norwell, Julie & James Russel of Palmer, Robert & Niki Whitman of Abington, Charles William Whitman of Brockton, Taren, Jeremy, Sean, Amy, Joshua, Alex and Kelly Whitman, Melissa and Jason Whitman of Ft. Meyers, Florida; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Betty Maloney.

His Funeral service will be at 9 A.M. on Saturday, July 5, at the Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams St., (just off Route 58 near North School), ABINGTON. Pastor Paul Taylor will officiate. Interment will take place in Mt. Vernon cemetery in Abington.

Calling hours Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mary E. (Burke) Melchin
July 09, 2003

Mary Elizabeth (Burke) Melchin, age 95, passed away at the Norwell Knoll Rehabilitation & Nursing Center on July 9, 2003. Born in Boston, Massachusetts. she was the daughter of William and Mary (Coe) Burke.

Mrs. Melchin worked as a dietician at the former Norfolk County Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles J. Melchin and is survived by two sons, Robert P. Melchin of Florida and Richard Melchin of Plymouth, Massachusetts and one daughter, Janet McLean of Braintree, Massachusetts. She is survived by fourteen grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bridget's Church, 455 Plymouth Street (Route 58), ABINGTON, at 9:00 A.M. Rev. Tom Boudreau will officiate.

Interment will take place in Mt. Benedict Cemetery, (West Roxbury) Boston, Massachusetts.
