Herbert L. Soule, Jr.
02/06/2004

Providence, RI – Herbert L. Soule, Jr., 77, of E. Freetown died at Veteran’s Hospital on February 6, 2004 after a battle with cancer.

He was the husband of Marjorie L. (Kroll) Soule; they were married for 51 years.

He was born in New Bedford, son of the late Herbert L. and Estelle B. (Holden) Soule, and resided in E. Freetown for more than 50 years.

For many years he worked as a bus driver for the former Union Street Railway Co of New Bedford, Greyhound of Boston and H & L Bloom of Taunton.

He was the owner/operator of the former Soule Signs, E. Freetown until his retirement.

Mr. Soule was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II. He was an accomplished wood carver in his spare time.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by a daughter: Brenda L. Soule-Lee of Clearwater, FL; a son: Jeffrey M. Soule and his wife Arlene of Littleton, NH; 2 grandchildren: Travis E. Soule and Holly A. Soule both of Littleton, NH; 1 niece; and 4 nephews.

He was brother of the late Jerome Soule, Charlotte S. Kershaw and Betty L. Crook.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend:

Calling hours Sunday, February 8, 2004, 3-5 P.M.

Funeral service Sunday, February 8, 2004 at 5:00 P.M. at the Kirby Funeral Home, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to: Hospice Outreach, 502 Bedford St., Fall River, MA 02720.

George F. Wood

Tiverton - George F. Wood, 96, widower of Virginia G. (Gifford) Wood of Westport died in Tiverton Friday, February 6, 2004, after a brief illness.

A lifelong resident of Westport, he was the son of the late Frederick A. and Anna W. (Madsen) Wood.

Before his retirement, Mr. Wood worked at the former Continental Screw Company in New Bedford.

He was a member of the Noquochoke Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Westport and the Westport Lions Club.

He is survived by 2 daughters: Barbara A. Kirby of Westport and Marjory Camara of Tiverton; 2 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Harold S. Wood, the late Ethel Dean and the late Dorothy S. Wood.

Funeral services will be private.

Calling hours are omitted.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity.

Timothy E. Sherman

Acushnet – Timothy E. Sherman, 55, of Acushnet died at home February 7, 2004 after a long illness. He was the husband of Dale F. (Mattson) Sherman.

He was born in Acushnet, son of the late Franklin and C. Faith (Timms) Sherman, and resided in Acushnet all of his life.

He was a member of the Long Plain United Methodist Church, Acushnet.

He was employed by the Acushnet Highway Department until leaving due to illness in January of this year.

Mr. Sherman was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was a member, Past Commander and Quartermaster of the V.F.W. Thomas E. Tuttle Post 7329, Acushnet. He enjoyed fishing.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son: Daniel F. Sherman of Acushnet; a step-son: Robert Morango of Fall River; 2 sisters: Marilyn F. Amaral and her husband Arthur and Lorrie J. Pepin and her husband Dennis all of Acushnet; a brother: Thomas A. Sherman and his wife Carol of New Bedford; many nieces & nephews; and many grand nieces & grand nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend:

Calling hours Monday, February 9, 2004, 2-4 & 7-9 P.M.

Funeral service Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at the KIRBY FUNERAL HOME, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.

Flowers are acceptable or memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Community Nurse, P.O. Box 831, Fairhaven, MA 02719-0831.

Interment in Acushnet Cemetery, Acushnet.

Estelle C. (Furtado) Daignault

Fall River - Estelle C. “Blondie” (Furtado) Daignault, 67, wife of the late Armand M. Daignault of Swansea passed away Sunday at Charlton Memorial Hospital, after a long illness.

She was born in Dartmouth, daughter of the late Manuel and Clara (Carvalho) Furtado and had been a resident of Swansea for many years.

She was formerly employed as a silk screener for Deknetel Surgical Products of Fall River.

She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Swansea.

She is survived by a son: David Daignault of Swansea; a daughter: Darlene Daignault of Swansea; 3 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter.

Memorial Mass to which friends and relatives are invited will be held at St. Michael’s Church, 270 Oak Grove Ave., Swansea on Saturday, February 14 at 10:0 A.M.

Calling hours are omitted.

Interment will be private.

Ruth E. (Douglas) Gifford

Schaumburg, IL - Ruth E. (Douglas) Gifford, 98, wife of the late Lincoln S. Gifford of Schaumburg, IL passed away Sunday at Friendship Village after a long illness.

Born in Brunswick, ME, the daughter of the late Charles L. and Ruth A. (Curtis) Douglas, and living there until moving to Illinois in 1949.

Mrs. Gifford was a lifelong member of the Durham Friends Meeting House in Durham, ME.

She was a graduate of Moses Brown in Providence, RI and received her Bachelors Degree in Home Economics from Farmington Normal School in Farmington, ME.

She was also a member of the Norwood Park Women’s Club of Chicago, IL.

Survivors include: 3 sons: Lincoln S. Gifford, Jr. of Nashua, NH, Douglas N. Gifford of Elmhurst, IL and Donald C. Gifford of Glen Ellyn, IL; 2 sisters: Pauline Douglas of Freeport, ME and Carol Douglas of Gardiner, ME; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gifford was also the sister of the late Isaiah Douglas, C. Lawrence Douglas, Hilda Douglas, Dorothy Douglas, Barbara Sherbak and Estella Latty.

Services to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Friday, February 13, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at the Allen’s Neck Friends Meeting House, 739 Horseneck Rd., Dartmouth, MA.

Calling hours are omitted.

Interment will be immediately following the service at Allen’s Neck Friends Cemetery.

David W. Smith
02/11/2004

Providence, RI - David W. Smith, 82, husband of Dorothy L. (Macomber) Smith, of Rogers Lane, Chace Point, Little Compton, passed away Wednesday after a brief illness at the Veterans Medical Center.

He was the son of the late James H. and Lucy (Potter) Smith.

He was born in Dartmouth and resided there prior to moving to Windsor, CT, then moving to Little Compton in 1969.

A WWII veteran of both the U.S. Army and Navy, Mr. Smith worked as an Engineer Inspector for General Electric in Windsor, CT until his retirement.

He was a 1939 graduate of Dartmouth High School and also a member of the Masonic Lodge of Connecticut and he attended day care at Westport Council on Aging.

Survivors including his wife are 2 daughters: Marcia G. Benjamin of Copperas Cove, TX and Pamela J. Manchester of Little Compton; a brother: Richard Smith of Dartmouth; a sister: Eunice Sylvia of Dartmouth; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smith was also the brother of the late James H. Smith.

At the request of the family funeral services will be private.

Owen J. Manning
02/11/2004

Boston - Owen J. Manning, 65, of King Village, New Bedford, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at Massachusetts General Hospital.

He was born in Boston, son of the late William J and Beatrice (Hanlon) Manning, and was a lifelong resident of New Bedford.

Before his retirement he was a custodian at various hospitals in the area.

He is survived by a brother: Larry F. Manning of California; a sister: Eleanor Densmore of Stow, Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late William E. Manning and Patrick F. Manning.

Funeral services will be private.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the St. Mary’s Church 130 South St. Wrentham on Tuesday March 23 art 9 A.M.

A Memorial Mass will be held at the St. Francis Xavier Church 261 Pleasant St. S. Weymouth on Wednesday May 5 at 7 A.M. followed by a Burial Service at Lakeview Cemetery, Pond St. S. Weymouth at 8 A.M.

Robert Johnson

Johnson of S. Weymouth March 19. Robert Hans age 78. Husband for 50 years of Elizabeth (Emslie) Johnson.

Father of Susan Hildreth of Portland OR, Peter Hans Johnson of Hingham, and Maynard Robert Johnson and his wife Teresa (Cook) of S. Weymouth.

Grandfather of Hannah Johnson of S. Weymouth. Brother of David T. Johnson of S. Weymouth and the late Carl Johnson of Wakefield, RI.

Also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A Family Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers Memorial Gifts may be given in Robert’s memory to the New England Wildlife Center 19 Fort Hill St. Hingham, MA 02043.
