August 31, 1999

Emma Roe Wilson of Easton died at the Genesis ElderCare-The Pines, Easton on Tuesday, August 31, 1999. She was 103.

Born in Talbot County on October 14, 1895, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Eliza May Sullivan Warner. After attending public school, she, in April of 1916, married W. Griffith Wilson. They made their home in Talbot County where he died in June of 1971.

Mrs. Wilson is survived by two daughters: Emma Lee Ewing of Easton and Janice W. Whittington of St. Michaels; a son, William H. Wilson of Easton; a sister, Dorothy Andrew of Easton; a brother, Robert Warner of Easton 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a daughter, Jane W. Cottingham who died in 1994 and a sister, Caroline Walker who died in October 1997.

Funeral services will be held at the graveside in Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton on Saturday, September 4, 1999 at 10:00 AM.

Memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, Hollyday Street and Glebe Road, Easton, MD 21601.

Arrangements are by the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton.

August 30, 1999

Michael John Mench of Grasonville died August 30, 1999 in Easton. He was 25.

Born on July 21, 1974 in Easton, he was the son of Walter Ronald and Mable G. Pierson Mench. He attended Queen Anne’s County High School. Mr. Mench worked as a maintenance supervisor for Wye Heights Plantation in Easton. His loves were hunting, fishing and bowling.

Mr. Mench attended Immanuel United Methodist Church in Grasonville.

Mr. Mench is survived by parents, who reside in Grasonville; his brother Jeffrey Mench and wife, Krissie, of Denton; two sisters, Dawn Mench of Grasonville, and Karen Timms and her husband, Dale, of Centreville; four nephews: Jonathan Mench, Jordan Mench, Brandon Imbs and Justin Imbs; one niece, Becky Gardner; one great nephew, Tyler Gardner; one great niece, Samantha Gardner; and his good friend Angela.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 1999 at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Grasonville. Family and friends may call one hour before at the church. Interment will be private.

Mary W. Gay, a resident of the Genesis ElderCare-The Pines, Easton, died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Monday, August 30, 1999. She was 81.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware on January 12, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Ernest A. and Josephine Russum Bowers. As a child she moved with her family to Queen Anne County where she attended public school. In February 1937 she married Lawrence T. Gay, Sr., a commercial waterman. They made their home in Talbot County and in 1940 moved to their home at Easton Point. She had assisted her husband in the operation of and was the bookkeeper for the family business, Gay Brothers Seafood from 1964 - 1982.

She was a member of the Easton Church of God, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Church and had served as Treasurer for her Sunday School Class.

Mr. Gay died in October 1989.

Mrs. Gay is survived by four daughters; Bonnie G. Springer of Easton, Barbara G. Shores of Laurel, DE, Sue Ann Gay of Easton and Charlotte G. McClain of Cordova; a son, Thomas S. Gay of Royal Oak, a foster son, Paul L. Howell of Easton; a sister, Helen V. Faulkner of Ridgely; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-granchildren. She was also pre-deceased by two sons, Edward P. Gay, II who died October 1978 and Lawrence T. Gay, Jr. who died October 1998.

Funeral services will be held at the Easton Church of God on Friday, September 3, 1999 at 11:00.

Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Thursday evening, September 2, 1999 from 7 - 9 PM.

Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Church of God, 1009 N. Washington St., Easton, MD 21601.

August 28, 1999

Joan Smith Davis of Heron Point in Chestertown, Md. , formerly of Haddam, Ct. died on August 28, 1999. She was 81.

Born in Surbiton, England on July 7, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marguerite Weller Smith. Mrs. Davis moved to the United States at a young age, living in Haddam, Ct. She worked as an executive secretary for AMF-Cuno. She married Donald C. Davis in 1969. In 1998 she and her husband moved to Heron Point in Chestertown, Md.

In addition to her husband she is survived by a son: Peter B. Nobert of Vienna, Va., a daughter Susan N. Petty of Manchester, Ma.; a sister Peggy Woodward of San Diego, Calif.; two step children: Miriam D. Sokol and Rosemary D. Pierson along with 9 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to: The Renal Treatment Center 402 Marvel Court Easton, Maryland 21601.

August 27, 1999

Katharine Louisa Sutherland, recently of Stevensville, MD, died Friday, August 27, 1999 at William Hill Manor in Easton, MD. She was 86.

Born on June 4, 1913 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of the late George and Louisa Cope Hyde. She attended Washington & Lee High School in Arlington, VA. She married David Knowlton Sutherland in 1936 and spent her life as a housewife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Sutherland was always an active Episcopalian, most recently a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville.

Mrs. Sutherland is survived by two sons: Donald K. Sutherland of Stevensville, MD and David E. Sutherland of Orlando, FL; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband; one brother, George Hyde; and two sisters: Margaret Erdman and Ruth Cannon.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 30, 1999 at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville, MD. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 2 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Titusville, FL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, c/o Building Fund, P.O. Box 92, Stevensville, MD 21666 or The National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Avenue, Miami, FL 33136.

August 26, 1999

Lena Mae Markhorst of Chestertown, Md. died on August 26, 1999 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home in Chestertown, Md. She was 84.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa. the daughter of the late Allan and Mary Kutz. She married Harry Markhorst; they made their home in Philadelphia. Mrs. Markhorst worked as a clerk typist in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard until she retired after 20 years. They moved to Tolchester in Chestertown, Md. shortly after her retirement. She enjoyed playing bingo.

In addition to her husband she is survived by a son: Harry Markhorst of Philadelphia, Pa.; 2 daughters: Dottie Markhorst and Joan Coleman both of West Folcroft, Pa.; a brother: Harry Kutz of Pottstown, Pa. along with 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday August 28, 1999 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home 2 hours prior to the service (9:00-11:00am). Interment will be in St. Johns Catholic Cemetery in Rock Hall, Md. Father Thomas Peterman will officiate.

August 23, 1999

William Leslie Simns of Rock Hall, Md. died on August 23, 1999 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. He was 92.

Mr. Simns was born on June 17, 1907 in Rock Hall, Md. He was the son of the late William Edward and Clara Coleman Simns. He joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 15 and traveled through the Panama Canal, ending up in San Francisco, Calif., where he turned 16. He then moved back to Rock Hall, Md. where he married Esther Porter on November 5, 1934. They lived in Rock Hall, Maryland. Mr. Simns worked for Vita Foods as a foreman until his retirement in the late 1970's. His wife predeceased him in 1979. Mr. Simns enjoyed working in his woodshop. He took great pride in his caretaking of the Scarpa Property in Skinners Neck, Rock Hall.

He is survived by 3 daughters: Lesley S. Jester of Rock Hall, Md., Nancy S. Brady of Rock Hall, Md., and Darlene S. Freeman of Millington, Md., one sister: Mae Thomas of Dover, De., a sister in law: Rebecca Simns of Rock Hall, Md. along with 15 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. 2 Sons preceded him in death: Robert Paul Jones who died in June of 1996 and William Edward Simns who died in May of 1993. He was also preceded in death by a brother George Cliffton Simns and a sister: Anna LeCompte.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday August 26, 1999 at 2:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Route 20 Rock Hall, Md. Relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery in Millington, Md. Contributions may be made in his name to the Rock Hall Fire Dept. and Ambulance Fund P.O. Box 577 Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

August 20, 1999

Jesse Ellis Miller of Queenstown died August 20, 1999 at Genesis Eldercare-Spa Creek in Annapolis. He was 75.

Born on March 9, 1924 in Bend, Oregon the son of the late Rollin Charles and Agnes Dial Miller. He attended Rogue River High School in Oregon. Mr. Miller served on a destroyer in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He later joined and retired as a Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force and the National Security Agency. He also worked for Hughes Aircraft Corporation and Westinghouse following his military career.

Mr. Miller married Jayne Elizabeth Murray on August 11, 1945. They made their home in Laurel, MD. In 1988, they settled in Queenstown on the Eastern Shore. Mrs. Miller predeceased him on May 15, 1993.

Mr. Miller was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville, MD. He volunteered his time at Stevensville Middle School and worked as a driver for Fuller Auto Park in Easton.

Mr. Miller is survived by two sons, Jeffery E. Miller of Annapolis, MD and Von C. Miller of Portland, OR; two daughters: Nancy Leigh Lipsner of Stevensville, MD and Jamie Lynne Rongo of Cottonwood, AZ; two brothers: Walter Miller of Eugene, OR and Charles Miller of Ritzville, WA; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 29 at Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 30.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Jesse and Jayne Miller Organ Fund, c/o Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 92, Stevensville, MD 21666.

Mitchell "Mickey" Louis Wooters, of Queenstown, Md., died Friday August 20, 1999 at his home.

He was 42 years old. Born on October 8, 1956 in Easton Md., he was the son of the late Frederick L. Wooters. He attended Queen Anne's County High School in Centreville MD. Mr. Wooters was self employed as a waterman and in construction. He was a member of the Bay Country Moose Lodge #831.

Mr. Wooters is survived by his mother Roberta Naomi Middleton Wooters, of Queenstown,Md., and two sisters Lisa Ann Quimby of Queenstown,Md., Denise Middleton of Baltimore,Md.. Mr. Wooters was predeceased by his father Frederick L. Wooters.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday August 24,1999 at 10:00am. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, Md. Family and friends may call on Monday August 23,1999 from 7- 9 p.m. Interment will be at Chesterfield Cemetery in Centreville, Md.

August 17, 1999

Jacob "Jack" Stein of Rock Hall, MD, formally of Norwood, PA, died August 17, 1999 at Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown, Maryland.

He was 78. Born in Buffalo, New York, he was the son of the late Nathan and Ida Feinberg Stein.

Mr. Stein served in the Army 1st Division, 17th Infantry Regiment. Captured by Germans he was held as a P.O.W. for 23 months at the infamous Stalag XVIIB, near Krems, Austria.

Mr. Stein has been married to Dorothy Temple Stein for 54 years. They resided in Norwood, PA for 40 years before retiring to Rock Hall, MD. While in Norwood he served as Scout Leader, Assistant Fire Chief, Borough Council and on the Board of Health. He received the "Harry Pettit Citizenship award in 1986. He was also a life member of the VFW Post 7213, American Legion Post D.A.V. and American Former Prisoners of War.

While residing in Rock Hall he served on Parks & Recreation Board, Past President of Rock Hall Lions Club and Past Commander Sgt. Preston Ashley American Legion Post #228.

In addition to his wife Mr. Stein is survived by 2 sons; Gary Stein of Prospect Park, PA and Alan Stein of Damascus, MD; 1 sister Ruth Haacke of Richmond, VA and five grandchildren and four great grandchildren survive him.

A Memorial Service will be held on August 29, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rock Hall American Legion Post #228, Rock Hall, and MD. Reception will follow immediately after service. In lieu of flowers the family suggest contributions to Rock Hall Volunteer Fire dept., PO Box 577, Rock Hall, Maryland 21661.

William Maxwell Willis of Galena, Md. died at Union Hospital in Elkton, Md. He was 82.

He was born on Nov. 14, 1916, the son of the late Arnold Wellington and Sarah M. LeCompte Willis. He began work at a young age on the family farm. Mr. Willis also operated a country store in Kent County for several years before moving to Baltimore, Md. in 1955. In July of 1956 he married Fannie Roark, they lived in Baltimore where Mr. Willis worked for Continental Can Company as a Tow Motor (forklift) operator. He returned to Galena, Md. in 1967, and retired from Continental Can Company in 1968. Mr. Willis was a member of Kennedyville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening and supporting community activities through functions and dinners.

In addition to his wife he is survived by 6 nephews: Carl Willis of Arizona, Paul Willis of California, Donald Willis of Baltimore, Md., Jerry Willis of Galena, Md., Howard McHenry of Kennedyville, Md., Calvin McHenry of Chesapeake City, Md.; 4 nieces: Margaret Ann Gary of Chestertown, Md., Marian Leiby of Chestertown, Md., Elizabeth Sauls of College Park, Md., and Virginia Newton of Laurel, Md. Along with several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday August 18, 1999 at 11:00 A.M. at Kennedyville United Methodist Church. Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday August 17, 1999 between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Interment will be in Chester Cemetery. Contributions may be made in his memory to: Kennedyville United Methodist Church 11979 Augustine Herman Hwy Kennedyville, Md. 21645 or to Galena Vol. Fire Dept. Ambulance Fund P.O. Box 189 Galena, Md. 21635.
