November 3, 1999

Esther Elisabeth "Ellie" Swann of Trappe died on Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at the Talbot Hospice House after battling lung cancer for three years. She was 76.

Born in Baltimore on June 23, 1923, she was the one of nine children of the late Hans Torwald and Olga Khristina Johansen Ellingsen, both Norwegian immigrants. Her father was an engineer on merchant ships sailing out of Baltimore, and he survived nearly a month in a lifeboat after a German submarine sank his ship in WWII. She grew up in Overlea and graduated from Kenwood High School.

She completed her nurse's training at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore. For a time during WWII, she worked at the Glenn L. Martin plant in Middle River. In 1946, she married Army veteran, James Ross Swann, and they lived in Eastern Shore towns of Chestertown, Queenstown, and Easton before settling in Trappe in the 1960's. She worked as a nurse and nursing supervisor at The Memorial Hospital, Easton and the House in the Pines nursing home in Easton. After she retired from nursing, she was an organist at Faith Chapel United Methodist Church in Bruceville. She enjoyed swimming, music, and being with her children. Mrs. Swann was a member of the Trappe United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Robert Swann of Baltimore; a daughter, Lisa E. Cramm of Washington D.C.; two sisters, Olga Dickson of Timonium, and Hannah Marie Flitton of Norfolk, VA; and three grandsons. Funeral services are private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

November 3, 1999

William E. Nagel of Chestertown, Md. formerly of Catonsville, Md. died on November 3, 1999 at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital. He was 80.

He was born in Ilchester, Md. on November 2, 1919, the son of the late William E. and Eva May Lowe Nagel. He attended High School in Howard County, Md. and started working at a young age. He then began his career as a plumber with his uncle and worked in the shipyards as a welder.Mr. Nagel served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, Mr. Nagel returned to Maryland and continued his career as a welder/ plumber in the Baltimore area.

He was predeceased by his first wife: Eleanor M. Nagel and in 1983 Mr. Nagel retired. He married Betty Raye Bare Wilson Nagel in 1984; they lived in Kinnaird Point in Worton, Md. Mr. Nagel was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chestertown, Md., Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post #36, and Great Oak Country Club. Mr. Nagel's longtime passion was bowling; he also enjoyed golfing, boating, crabbing, and especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife he is survived by 2 stepchildren: Lloyd Lee Wilson of Norfolk, Va. and Damon William Wilson of Hamptonville, N.C.; 3 brothers: Earl Nagel of Perry Hall, Md., George and John Walker both of Baltimore, Md.; 2 sisters: Margaret Wade of Finksburg, Md. and Shirley Pendleton of Ellicott City, Md.; 3 grandchildren: Brett Gordon, Brooks Clifton, and Asa V.C. Wilson. He is also survived by 2 aunts: Marie Lowe Ash of Ellicott City, Md. and Clara Lowe Linthicum of Baltimore, Md. along with a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday November 7, 1999 at 2:30 P.M. at First United Methodist Church in Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Saturday November 6, 1999 between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. Interment will be on Monday November 8, 1999 at 11:00 A.M. at Meadowridge Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church P.O. Box 227 Chestertown, Md. 21620 or the Chemotherapy Section of Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital 100 Brown Street Chestertown, Md. 21620.

Helen Harner Bishop of Queenstown, MD. died November 3, 1999 at the Corsica Hills Nursing Center in Centreville, MD. She was 87.

Born on October 16, 1912 in Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Delmer & Delora Wolf Harner. She grew up on a farm near Dayton, Ohio and graduated from high school in Ohio. She graduated from Miami of Ohio University Teacher’s College. Mrs. Bishop then taught for 5 years in Tipp City, Ohio. She then received her bachelors degree in Home Economics from Ohio State University.

In 1939 she came to Queen Anne’s County as a Home Demonstration Agent and worked for 3 ½ years until marriage to J. Tilghman Bishop on February 21, 1943. Together they owned & operated the Winona Farm in Carmichael, MD. He predeceased her on May 27, 1993.

Mrs. Bishop joined the 4-H Club 77 years ago and was always very supportive in 4-H work. She helped establish the present 4-H Park during her term as Home Demonstration Agent and continued interest since then. She enjoyed judging at the Queen Anne’s County Fair, and fairs in Ohio, Delaware and the Maryland State Fair. She was a member of Chesapeake College Board of Trustees for 10 years, Queen Anne’s Historical Society, Queen Anne’s Library, Charter Member of American Association of University Women, Charter Member of Queen Anne's Museum of Eastern Shore Life. She also assisted with bringing new doctors to Queen Anne’s County, establishing Corsica Hills, Tilghman Terrace & Chesapeake College. Held many offices in Queen Anne’s County Council of Homemaker Clubs, was a member of Wye of Carmichael United Methodist Church in Queenstown, MD. and held many offices in Women’s Society for 56 years. Mrs. Bishop also enjoyed gardening, entertaining in her home, reading and traveling. She also hosted foreign exchange students.

She is survived by a son Charles "Tim" Bishop of Queenstown, MD. a daughter Elizabeth Ann Bishop of Easton, MD. and one granddaughter Julie Ann Bishop. A sister Irene Ferguson of Michagan. A brother predeceased her Charles L. Harner.

Funeral Services will be held at 1pm Saturday November 6, 1999 at Wye of Carmichael United Methodist Church in Queenstown, MD. Family and friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD. between the hours 7pm ~ 9pm. Interment will be in Chesterfield Cemetery. The family request that memorial contributions be made to Queen Anne’s Museum of Eastern Shore Life P.O. Box 525 Centreville, MD. 21617 or Wye of Carmichael United Methodist Church P.O. Box 7 Queenstown, MD. 21658.

Helen Carol Law Funk, of Easton, MD and Fenwick Island, DE, died on November 3, 1999 at the William Hill Manor. She was 83.

Born in Clarksburg, W.VA. on October 23, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Clyde O. and Maude Lininger Law. She lived much of her early life in Wheeling, W.VA., where her father was the General Agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. She received her education from Washington Seminary for Women, the public schools of Wheeling, and the West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she was a member of the Emeritus Club.

She and her husband, Thorold Shaffer Funk, moved to Clarksburg, W.VA. in 1942, where she was active in the First Methodist Church, the Women’s Society, Clarksburg League for Service, and as a volunteer she helped initiate the snack bar for the then new United Protestant Hospital. She was also a member and lived at Lake Floyd.

In 1966, she moved to Charleston, W.VA. when her husband became Director of Vocational Rehabilitation for West Virginia. During this time, she was a member of the Sweetbrier Garden Club, and the Grandparents Club of Charleston. In 1991, she moved to William Hill Manor in Easton, MD. Mr. Funk died in January 1997.

Mrs. Funk is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William C. (Nancy Jo) Pepper of Selbyville, DE; a son, John G.L. Funk of York, PA; a brother, John M. Law of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Bryan Pepper of Lewes, DE, Martin Pepper of Trappe, MD, Natalie P. Cataldi of Seaford, DE, and Amy F. Jackson of York, PA; and 9 great-grandchildren. A sister, Marjorie Law Shipp, is deceased.

Burial will be private in Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport, W.VA.

Memorial contributions may be made to West Virginia Wesleyan College, Funk Scholarship Fund, Buckhannon, W.VA. 26201.

November 1, 1999

JoAnn Gale Large of Chestertown, Maryland died on November 1, 1999 at her home. She was 54.

Born in Baltimore, MD, on December 8, 1944 Ms. Large was the daughter of the late Joseph Jerome and Florence Gale Tubbs of Chestertown, MD.

She graduated from High school and attended 2 years at Chandler School for Women in Boston, Mass. She was married for 20 years to Ronald D. Large. Ms. Large was a homemaker for the majority of her life residing in Chestertown for the past 12 years. She was a member of Asbury Methodist Church in Millington, MD. She enjoyed Knitting, ceramics and general arts and crafts. She was also involved with 1st United Pentecostal Church in Kennedyville, MD.

In addition to her mother she is survived by two sons; Ronald David Large of Smyrna, DE, and Robert Joseph Large of Worton, MD; one brother Joseph Jerome Tubbs, Jr. of Collierville, TN; one sister: Dorothy Tubbs McMullen of Mill Creek, Washington, and one Grandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 5, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. Chestertown, MD. Relatives and friends may call on Friday, November 5, 1999 from the hours 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Interment will be at Church Hill Cemetery.

Mildred Elizabeth Gebhardt of Easton, formerly of Croydon, PA died on Monday, November 1, 1999 at the Genesis Eldercare-The Pines, Easton. She was 92.

Born in Clinton, NJ on March 10, 1907, she was the daughter of the late William Douglas and Lillian M. Rush Dunham. While living in PA, she had worked from 1951-63 as a sales person for Exclusive Fashions in Philadelphia. Prior to that, she had worked for a number of years for the Philco Corp.

Her husband, Frank E. Gebhardt, whom she married in 1924, died in 1967.

Mrs. Gebhardt is survived by a daughter, Elaine M. Putman of Cordova; a sister, Ada McCarroll of Whiting NJ; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and 7 great- great grandchildren.

She was Pre-deceased by a son, David L. Gebhardt, a grand daughter, and a great grandchild

Memorial services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday, November, 9, 1999 at 4:00pm

Burial will be private.

December 27, 1999

Patricia Eva Lee Newton of Chestertown, MD died on Monday, December 27, 1999 at University of Maryland Hospital Center, Baltimore, MD. She was 47. She is the daughter of the late Floyd Collins Price and Grace Eva Carter Price.

Ms. Newton was a professional Cosmetologist working for Hair We Are in Chestertown. She enjoyed collecting hummingbirds and angels and loved to dance. She was a member of Still Pond United Methodist Church, a member of Loyal Order of Elks Ladies Auxiliary of Chestertown, MD, member of Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post #36 Ladies Auxiliary and VFW Post #652 Ladies Auxiliary in Millington, MD.

Ms. Newton is survived by a son William Brian Gsell of Chestertown, two brothers Floyd Price of Kennedyville, MD and William W. Price of Church Hill, MD; one sister Mary Ann Thorpe of Federalsburg, MD and two grandchildren, Gunner Brian Gsell and Morgan Paige Bennett both of Chestertown, MD. In Addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a sister Virginia Lynn Gustafson.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 31st, 1999 at1:00 p.m. from the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown, MD where friends and family may call one hour prior. Interment will be at Still Pond Cemetery, Still Pond, MD.

Naomi "Robby" Wooters of Queenstown, MD. died Monday December 27, 1999 at the Memorial Hospital in Easton. She was 68.

Born on September 27, 1931 in Grasonville, MD. the daughter of the late Nelson David and Viola O’Donnell Middleton. She attended school in Baltimore, MD. She later married Frederick L. Wooters. Mrs. Wooters worked for various restaurants in the Queen Anne’s County area as a cook and manager.

She is survived by two daughters Denise Middleton of Baltimore, MD. and Lisa Ann Quimby of Queenstown, MD. Two sisters Mildred Middleton of Grasonville, MD. and Beverly Cash of Ohio. She was predeceased by her husband; Frederick Wooters; a son Mitchell "Mickey" Wooters and two brothers David and Gary Middleton.

A graveside service was held on December 29, 1999 at Chesterfield Cemetery in Centreville, MD .

Arrangements were provided by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD.

December 21, 1999

William H. Johnson, Sr. of Tolchester, Maryland died on Tuesday, December 21 at University of Maryland Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 69.

He was the son of the late Clarence and Wreatha Johnson of Rock Hall. Born in Abington, PA Mr. Johnson attended Hatboro, PA schools, served in the Navy from 1947 till 1955. He was chief design engineer at Wilkenson Electronics until his retirement in 1984.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 51 years Harriet Freeman, three sons William JR, of Egg Harbor, NJ; David of Hartford, Conn.; Stephen of Elkton, MD and a daughter Sarah Jackson of Hot Springs, NC; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chestertown, Maryland with a viewing one hour prior.

Interment will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Chestertown, Maryland.
