VINCENT ANTHONY BROOKS, JR. (Age 70)
Died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at Washington Hospital Center, surrounded by family.
Vincent was born on April 15, 1940, in Washington, DC. He was a 1958 graduate of St. John’s College High School and a 1963 graduate of Syracuse University, where he played lacrosse. Vincent was a veteran of Vietnam and peacetime, having served in the Army from April 1, 1964, until his honorable discharge on August 17, 1970, at the rank of Captain. He received numerous honors including the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
Following his military service, he served with the D.C. National Guard, where he rose to the rank of Major. His subsequent civil service career included positions at the Department of Commerce, the Small Business Administration and the Department of Energy. He was active in the leadership of the Department of Energy Chapter of Blacks in Government. He began and led the DC-Baltimore Chapter of Amyloidosis Support Groups Inc. after being diagnosed with the disease in 2004.
Vincent was the beloved husband of 48 years of Geneva R. Brooks; father of Renee B. Catacalos (Damon), Vincent A. Brooks, III, and Stacy E. Brooks; grandfather of Catherine and Louis Catacalos. He is also survived by niece Jacqueline Bundy, nephew James Tolliver and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent A. Brooks, Sr., and Marie Elizabeth Brooks, and his infant son, Mark David Brooks.
Relatives and friends may call at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 15th and V Streets, NW, Washington, DC, on Monday, July 19, 10 to 11 a.m., where Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Interment at Cheltenham Veterans cemetery, Tuesday, July 20 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vincent Brooks, Jr. Memorial Fund, c/o Amyloidosis Support Groups Inc., 232 Orchard Drive, Wood Dale, IL 60191.

ANGELA MARIE CONNELLY

Beloved wife of Matthew Connelly; mother of Margaret and Robert Connelly; daughter of Martha Wright and the late Fred Wright; sister of Greg (Susan) Wright. CATHERINE ANN DOLAN SCHEMPP “KITTY” (Age 86)
Kitty Schempp of Washington, DC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 in her home surrounded by her adoring family following a short but determined battle with cancer. Kitty came to Washington, DC as a child relocating from New York with her parents and brother, the late Catherine Looram and Michael F. X. Dolan, and the late Michael F.X. Dolan, Esquire. Kitty is survived by her husband of 64 years, Leonard F., Jr. and her seven loving children: Leonard F., III (Kathy), Michael (Rosetta), Patrick (Esther), Catherine M. Schempp, PhD, Terrence (Eileen), Mary Ann Rimel (Chris) and Dr. Rosemary Schempp (Raul). She is also survived by ten of her eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren as well as many relatives and close friends.
As a Washingtonian, she attended Blessed Sacrament parochial school, graduated from Holy Cross High School and remained a lifelong parishioner of the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament serving as a member of the Sodality. She was a dedicated volunteer with the Christ Child Society of Washington and in 2009 she was honored for her exemplary and outstanding service with the Marge Kearney Award.
The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard, West, Silver Spring, MD, (valet parking), on Friday, 2 to 4 p.m. and at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel, 3630 Quesada St. NW, Washington, DC, on Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday, 10-11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial to follow at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Saturday, July 17 at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. Memorials may be made to the Christ Child Society of Washington in Kitty’s name.

MARIA ANTOINETTE FATO
On Wednesday, July 14, 2010 of Columbia, MD. Beloved wife of the late Carmino John Fato; mother of Celeste Dodson, Christina (Eric) Kindbom, John (Tricia) Fato and Michael (Kelly) Fato; grandmother of Jimmy, Brandon, Liana, Jordan, Caroline, Sara, Johnny, Julia, Joseph, Nicholas and Jacob. Also survived by many loving family and friends. STANLEY R. JAFFIN

Capt. ROBERT BAILEY CONNELLY, USN (Ret.)
On Tuesday, July 13, 2010 in Silver Spring, MD, formerly of Jamestown, RI from complications associated with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Los Angeles, CA, on September 10, 1930 to then Lt. Bailey Connelly and Evelyn Coloney Connelly. He graduated from the US Naval Academy with the 2nd Company in 1952, and married Elizabeth Ann Bayne the following November. He served on the battleship Wisconsin (BB-64) for two years before attending Electronics School and Submarine School in 1955. After two years on the USS Blackfin (SS-322), he had nuclear power training, and reported to the USS Sargo (SSN-583) which made the first winter surfacing at the North Pole in February, 1960.
Subsequent sea duty was as Commissioning Engineer of the USS John Marshall (SSBN-611), Commissioning Executive Officer of the USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635) and Commanding Officer of the USS John C. Calhoun (SSBN-630).
His first shore duty was at the Naval Submarine School as Head of the Officer’s Training Depart-ment. Subsequent duty included the staff of Commander, Submarines, US Atlantic Fleet, and finally as Chair of Submarine Warfare at the US Naval War College, Newport, RI from which he retired in 1977.
Capt. Connelly was employed by Purvis Systems, Inc. in Newport, RI for several years. He was among the founding partners of The Newport Athletic Club, was a member of the Board of the Newport Armed Services YMCA, and a vestryman and member of Trinity Church, Newport, RI.
Survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Cathleen of Washington, DC; sons, Robert, Jr. of Arlington, VA and Thomas Bayne of Mansfield, MA; and two grandsons, Matthew Gordon Connelly and Samson Bailey Connelly.
A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Church, One Queen Anne Square, Newport, RI 02840 on Saturday, July 31 at 10 a.m. Interment at Arlington National cemetery on Wednesday, September 15 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Trinity Church or to the US Naval Academy Alumni Association, www.usna.com .

ROSEMARY HOWARD ZAGONE (Age 76)
