Charles Edward Weidner, Jr.
Oct 24, 1936 - Mon Dec 13, 2010

Charles Edward Weidner, Jr., 74, formerly of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed away on Monday, December 13, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Hagerstown.

Born on October 24, 1936 in Downsville, Maryland he was the son of the late Charles E. and Bertha May (Davis) Weidner.

Mr. Weidner is survived by his son, Charles I. Weidner and his wife Pam of Keedysville, Maryland; and his daughter Carol E. Houser and her companion John Eader, Jr, of Boonsboro, Maryland; and one step-son Dwayne Gossard. He is also survived by two sisters, one brother, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 3346 Gapland Road, Rohrersville, Maryland. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 3346 Gapland Road, Rohrersville, Maryland, 21779.

James Thomas Farrell

James T. Farrell, beloved husband of Ginette Farrell went home to be with the Lord on December 13, 2010 surrounded by his loving family.

Jim was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He had a love of fishing and boating that he shared with all of his friends and family as well as anyone who was willing to listen to his fish tales. Jim had a zest for life that especially showed during his lengthy battle with cancer.

Jim was born in Manhattan New York and was the son of that late Frank and Dorothy Farrell. Jim is survived by his wife of 18 years ginette Farrell, Brother Frank Farrell of New York, and his sister Barbara Griffith of Ohio. Jim is survived by his children Jay Farrell, Kenny Farrell and Renee and Mark Sweatband all of Ohio, Frank and Holly Kulikowski, Kelly Kulikowski and Anna Kulikowski all of Maryland. Jim was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by one son Timothy Kulikowski.

Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his canine companion, Cabo. Jim and Cabo shared many walks and rides on the boat as well as many seafood dinners.

Thank you to our friends, family and neighbors who have supported all of us through this extremely difficult time. Also, thanks to Hospice of Washington County for compassionate nurses and staff members who allowed us to make the last months of Jims's life on this earth as comfortable as possible. You allowed us to make this difficult situation a peaceful one; you were all truly a blessing.

A special thank you to Jim's daughter, Holly Kulikowski who stayed by Jim's side during his last days and provided him with constant love, care and compassion. You were truly a special person in Jim's life as well as his favorite nurse.

A Christian Celebration of Jims's life will be held at a later date at St. James Catholic Church in Boonsboro, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland 21742, or the American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Maryland 21742, in memory of Jim.

Ira Wheeler Haupt, Jr.

Ira Wheeler Haupt, Jr., 63, of Loxahatchee, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee, Florida.

Born on October 23, 1947, Ira was the son of the late Ira Wheeler Haupt, Sr. and Oneida Susan (Reeder) Haupt.

He was a 1965 graduate of Boonsboro High School, was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Rohrersville, Maryland, and served in the Navy during the Vietnam war from 1965-1968.

Mr. Haupt was formerly employed by Donald W. Guyton in Middletown, Maryland, The Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick, Maryland, and was owner of Haupt Electric in Rohrersville, Maryland.

He enjoyed boating and fishing and was a member of the Brunswick Bass Masters Club before moving to Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Marsha of thirty seven years; a daughter, Angela Charla and her husband, Leonard and their two children, Alyssa and Anthony Charla all of Loxahatchee, Florida. He is also survived by two brothers, Donald Haupt and his wife, Dottie of Falling Waters, West Virginia, R. Wayne Haupt and his wife, Pam of Sharpsburg, Maryland; three sisters, Esther and her husband, Donald O'Neal, Shirley Haupt and Juanita Haupt both of Hagerstown, Mayrland.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland with the Rev. Marvin Kline and Rev. John Schildt officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Pleasant View cemetery in Rohrersville, Maryland.

Janet Lorraine (Keadle) Summers

Janet Lorraine (Keadle) Summers, 85, of Boonsboro, Maryland passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Fahrney-Keedy Home & Village in Boonsboro.

Born on April 11, 1925 in Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late Russell Ellsworth and Blanche Naomi (Jones) Keadle.

Lorraine was employed as a cashier with the Washington County Board of Education and retired after 26 years of service at Boonsboro Junior High School.

She was a member of the Boonsboro Lioness Club, the Boonsboro Homemakers Club, and was a volunteer at the Boonsboro Elementary School and the Boonboro Band Boosters.

Lorraine was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boonsboro.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard E. Summers; her daughter, Linda L. Hanes and her husband Maurice of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania; her granddaughter Kimberly M. Hanes of Frederick, Maryland; her grandson Bryan C. Hanes and his wife Bethany of Hagerstown; two great-granchildren Madison E. and Alexia N. Hanes of Hagerstown; her sister Patricia Keadle Fleming and her brother Maynard E. Keadle, both of Cockeysville, Maryland. She is also survived by three nephews, Russell, Michael and Patrick; and two nieces, Jane and Missy.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. Rev. Joseph I. Donovan, III and the Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will follow at the Boonsboro cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Reed Alexander Cantler, 14, of Sharpsburg, Maryland, died on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 as a result of an automobile accident.

Reed was born on October 23, 1996 in Rockville, Maryland. He was an avid hunter and played baseball with the South Mountain Little League from the time he was seven years old. He was a freshman at Boonsboro High School where he was a member of the school Golf Team.

Reed was a member of St. Mary's Shrine of our Lady Fatima Catholic Church in Barnesville, Maryland.

He is survived by his mother, Ann E. Rice and Joe Schofield of Sharpsburg; his father, William S. Cantler, Jr. and Ruthann Graniero of Arnold, Maryland; his two brothers, Aaron E. Cantler and Sean M. Rice-Schofield, both of Sharpsburg; his Maternal Grandmother, Ann McManus-Rice of Poolesville, Maryland; and his Maternal Grandfather, James B. Rice and his wife Susan of Walkersville, Maryland. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Reed was preceded in death by his Paternal Grandparents, William S. Sr. and Ruth Cantler.

A mass of christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at St. Mary's Shrine of our Lady Fatima Catholic Church, 18230 Barnesville Road, Barnesville, Maryland. Rev. Kevin P. O'Reilly will officiate. Burial will follow at the Boyds Presbyterian Church cemetery in Boyds, Maryland.

The family will recieve friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

Virginia Ann (Sostar) Angle

Virginia Ann (Sostar) Angle, 81, of Keedysville, Maryland, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 23, 2010, at the Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.

Born on August 31, 1929 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late John Paul Sostar and Louise (Mummert) Sostar. She was raised by the late John and Mary Mummert (her maternal grandparents) in Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Rev. Harry L. Angle, Sr. having been married on February 26, 1955 for 46 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was devoted to serving the Lord.

Virginia attended Hagerstown High School and was trained as a nursing assistant.

She was employed by F.W. Woolworth Company, was a licensed daycare provider and retired from the American Greeting Card Company.

Virginia was a member of the Boonsboro Bible Church and also was a member of the Sharpsburg Bible Church and the Adult Sunday School Class.

She is survived by her three daughters, Cathy A. and her husband Robert Hutzell, Robin L. and her husband Barry Swailes and Darlene K. Angle; her three sons, Harry L. Angle Jr., Jerry A. Angle, and Mark D. Angle and his wife Jayne; twelve granchildren, Kristin Hutzell, Kara and her husband Jason Frantz, Jeremy Angle and his wife Kim, Sara, Morgan, Kathryn, Jennifer, Marcus, Sam, Taylor and Tess Angle, and Caleb Rodgers; one great-grandson Logan Frantz; three great-granddaughters, Zoe Frantz, Mackenzie and Brooke Angle; and her sister Mary Lou (Sostar) Kline. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Virginia was preceded in death by one grandson, Harry L. Angle, III (Trey) and her great-grandson Blake London Frantz.

Virginia loved to cook, bake and make soft dough sugar cookies. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, grandchildren and great-grandhildren. She enjoyed traveling with her late husband and taking day trips with her sister. She loved serving the Lord and listening to Southern Gospel Music.

Viewing will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, December 27, 2010 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

Viewing will also take place beginning at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral ceremony at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Sharpsburg Bible Church on the corner of Potomac and Antietam Streets in Sharpsburg, Maryland. Rev. Gene Renner and Rev. Ralph Jamison will officiate. Interment services will be held at Beaver Creek cemetery in Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sharpsburg Bible Church Building Fund, Post Office Box 216, Sharpsburg, Maryland, 21782.

Helen Kathaline (Rosenberg) Spielman

Helen Kathaline (Rosenberg) Spielman, 97, of Funkstown, Maryland went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at her home.

Born on September 16, 1912 in Hagerstown, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late George Shanklin and Alice Jane (Jacobs) Rosenberg.

Her husband, Harry H. Spielman preceded her in death in 1951.

Helen was a member of the Rehoboth United Methodist Church in Williamsport, Maryland where she had previously served as the Superintendent of the Sunday School.

She was a life member of the Maryland Parent Teacher Association and the Dixon Troxell American Legion Post 211 Auxiliary in Funkstown, Maryland. She was also a member of the the National AARP and the Funkstown Senior Citizens.

Helen retired in 1977 from the Board of Education where she was employed as a Cafeteria Worker at the South Hagerstown High School for 15 years. She went on to work as the Cafeteria Manager at the Funkstown School for 5 years.

Helen was known for her love of card playing and domino's and enjoyed the hobby of sewing and quilting.

She is survived by two daughters, Yvonne E. and her husband James Bussard of Funkstown, Maryland and Norma J. and her husband Thomas Sprecher of Hagerstown, Maryland; and two sons, Franklin R. and his wife Phyllis Spielman of Boonsboro, Maryland and Nevin L. and his wife Deborah Spielman of Funkstown, Maryland. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-granchildren.

In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her daughter Carolyn A. Ford and her son Harry H. Spielman, Jr.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2010, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland. Dr. James E. Swecker will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday.

Mildred L. "Millie" (Wachter) Fiery

Mildred L. "Millie" (Wachter) Fiery, 95, of Rolling Road in Hagerstown, passed peacefully on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at her daughter's home in Greencastle, Pennsylvania.

Born on June 17, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Worthington P. and Maude C. (Young) Wachter.

Her husband, Albert T. "Bud" Fiery preceded her in death on October 9, 1980.

Millie was a member of Haven Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown. She was a founding member of the Western Maryland Hospital Center Auxiliary and had received many awards for her volunteer service. Most recently she was honored for 50 years of service.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynda F. and her husband Pastor S. Dwight Morgan of Greencastle, Pennsylvania; three grandsons, Pastor S. Scott Morgan and his wife Dawn of Hanover, Pennsylvania, D. Todd Morgan and his wife Laurie of Greencastle, Pennsylvania, and Roland T. Morgan of Hagerstown, Maryland and his friend Karen Sornson of Hancock, Maryland; one nephew, Paul Wachter, of Charleston, South Carolina; and one niece, Sally Ducker of Gainesville, Georgia. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Millie was preceded in death by her brother Samuel Wachter and her sister Evelyn Wachter.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland. Pastor S. Scott Morgan will officiate. Interment will follow at Rest Haven cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 as well as one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Dr. Donald W. Deering
Mar 28, 1948 - Mon Feb 15, 2010

Dr. Donald W. Deering, 61, of Keedysville, Maryland, a leading scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center who managed multinational research projects involving terrestrial ecology and remote sensing and who was instrumental in efforts to use satellites and other self-developed technology to monitor changes in the Earth's environment, died February 15 at his home surrounded by his family.

A native of Lubbock, Texas, he resided during the past 32 years in Laurel, Maryland, and later in Keedysville.

He earned his B.S. in Range Management in 1970 and his M.S. in Range Science in 1972 from Texas Tech University. His formal education culminated with his Ph.D. in Remote Sensing from Texas A&M University in 1978.

During his 30-year career as a physical scientist at NASA, Dr. Deering conceived and built with NASA engineers the original PARABOLA field radiometer instrument for conducting fundamental research into the nature of bidirectional reflectance distribution functions and was awarded the NASA Group Achievement Award, among other numerous awards, for his innovative work. Dr. Deering authored or coauthored numerous articles published in peer reviewed science journals, as well as several leading treatises in his field. He mentored many in the fields of remote sensing and the biospheric sciences, directing students’ doctoral dissertations, as well as providing an encouraging voice for aspiring scientists.

Dr. Deering loved his family, God, and country. His interests were always challenging, as he enjoyed applying his many skills to everyday life. He was an intellectual who never ceased to thrive on studying the nuances of things great and small. He was also an accomplished craftsman, athlete and photographer -- a Renaissance man to his three adoring children. Those who knew him well viewed him as a wonderful teacher, colleague, friend, teammate and neighbor.

He was an insightful and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Laurel, where he served for many years as Chairman of Trustees and as an adult Sunday School teacher. He was player-coach for countless league softball and volleyball seasons. Dr. Deering also served as an active member for many years with The Gideons International. He was most recently a member of Faith Baptist Church in Knoxville, Maryland, where occasionally he was able to teach adult Sunday School despite complications of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Dr. Deering gave selflessly of his time to others.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Darling Deering; three children, son, Christopher Wayne Deering and wife Amy Harrell Deering of Birmingham, Ala., daughter Nicole Deering Stover and husband Richard Stover of Helena, Ala., and daughter Kimberly Deering Martin and husband Larry Martin of Keedysville; and five grandchildren, Cameron Keith Martin, Riley Wayne Martin, Anna Katherine Deering, Michael Christopher Deering and Donnelly Barringer Stover; mother, Virginia Louise Fisher Deering of Lubbock, Texas; mother-in-law Elsie C. Darling and father-in-law Herbert C. Darling, of Keedysville, Maryland; sister, Carolyn Deering Gray and husband Robert, of Albuquerque, NM; brother Gregory Alan Deering and wife Sharon, of Arlington, Texas; and brother Timothy Neal Deering, of Lubbock, Texas; sister-in-law Eloise Jones and brother-in-law Gregory Jones, of Laurel; and nephew, Erik L. Tilley, of Boulder, Colo.

He will be laid to rest at Fairview cemetery in Keedysville, Maryland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland. The family will receive visitors there on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday beginning at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The ALS Association - DC/MD/VA Chapter, 7507 Standish Place, Rockville, MD 20855.
