Frances C. (Ford) Younkins
Dec 12, 1915 - Tue Feb 16, 2010

Frances C. (Ford) Younkins, 94, currently of Hagerstown and formerly of Mapleville, passed peacefully on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Julia Manor Health Care Center in Hagerstown.

Born on December 12, 1915 in Mt. Aetna, she was the daughter of the late John C. And Orpha L. (Dubel) Ford.

Her husband, Clarence I. Younkins preceded her in death in 1973.

Frances was a member of the Potomac Towers Senior Citizens and fomerly a member of the Senior Bowling League.

Mrs. Younkins retired in 1983 after 17 years of service as a Nurse's Aide at the Fahrney-Keedy Home & Village.

She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis A. Wood of Williamsport, Maryland; her son, Charles E. Younkins of Hagerstown; 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, 3 step great-grandchildren, and 3 step great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Ford.

A graveside ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Boonsboro cemetery. Rev. David L. Coblentz will officiate.

Friends are invited to visit at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland, beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, February 19, 2010 where the family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any charity of choice.

R. Meredith Haynes

R. Meredith Haynes, 74, formerly of Rohrersville, Maryland and currently of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, passed peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Born on March 10, 1935 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late H. Alan and Louise (Meredith) Haynes.

Meredith was a 1953 graduate of Hagerstown High School and a member of the Class of 1959 from Franklin and Marshall and also a graduate of Frostburg State University.

Mr. Haynes was retired from Teleflex-Handy and Harman Automotive and was previously employed by Landis Tool in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania and Litton Computer of Reston, Virginia.

Mr. Haynes was a member of the Ringgold Church of Christ where he had served as Treasurer, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher.

Meredith was a member of the Rohrersville Band, past member of the Wayne Band, and was with the Hagerstown Municipal Band for 25 years. He was a past member of the Long Meadow Fire Company, the Washington County Heritage Museum and the Smithsburg Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife Catherine (Ditto) Haynes; four daughters, Carol Ann Haynes and Linda Sokol of Hagerstown, Judith Folgner of Leesburg, Virginia and Dawn Dillard of Hagerstown; one son, C. Meredith Haynes of Cincinnati, Ohio; and one sister, Jane Shifler of Boonsboro. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Christina Haynes.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Ringgold Church of Christ, 14420 Barkdoll Road, Hagerstown, Maryland. Pastors Don Conley and Richard Daughtridge will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Harold L. Wise
Dec 17, 1936 - Thu Feb 18, 2010

Harold L. Wise, 73, of Hagerstown, died on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Washington County Hospital.

Born on December 17, 1936 in Frederick County, he was the son of the late Roy M. and Estella (Jones) Wise.

In his early years, Harold worked on his family's farm. In 1978 he began working for the Washington County Board of Education in the Maintenence Department and retired in 1995.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his two sisters, Helen M. Wise and Joyce Turner and her husband Butch, all of Hagerstown. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Wise was preceded in death by one sister, Annie Mae Palmer; and three brothers, Robert, William and Elvin Wise.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 22, 2010 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. Rev. Ralph E. Jamison will officiate. Interment will follow at the Boonsboro cemetery.

Friends are invited to visit at the funeral home on Sunday, February 21, 2010 beginning at 9 a.m. where the family will receive friends from 4 - 6 p.m.

I. Arley Hutchinson, Jr.
May 7, 1953 - Sat Feb 20, 2010

I. Arley Hutchinson, Jr., 56, of Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown, died peacefully on February 20, 2010 at his home.

Born on May 7, 1953 in West Virginia, he is the son of Marian (Piper) Divelbliss of West Virginia and the late Irvin A. Hutchinson, Sr.

Arley was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Hagerstown Christian Church and owned his own Landscaping and Electrical Businesses in West Virginia.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his four children, Faith M. Esworthy of Hagerstown;,Jessica N. Keefer of Smithsburg, James D. Hutchinson of North Carolina and Joseph A. Keefer, III of Hagerstown; one sister, Betty Lou Smelser and two brothers, Kenneth and Roger Hutchinson all of Hagerstown; his life partner, Melodie M. Murray of Hagerstown; and his special friend Gordon C. Crabbe of Hagerstown. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. Interment services will be planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the funeral home to assist with costs of services.

Clifford William Thompson

Clifford William Thompson, 77 of Marco Island, FL and Knoxville, MD died peacefully February 18, 2010 at his home with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of RoseMarie Thompson for 58 years.

Born March 6, 1932 in Loundon County, Virginia he was the son of the late Alfred and Arbutus Waters Thompson.

Clifford was employed by the CSX railroad as a car foreman retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1582 in Brunswick MD and the BPO Elks Lodge 684 in Frederick.

He is survived by two loving children, Deborah and husband Richard Gross of Hagerstown and Keith Wayne and wife Kathy Thompson of Knoxville. Grandchildren: James Thompson and wife Kaya of Hedgesville, WV, Jason Thompson of Hancock, MD, James Lapole of Boonsboro, MD, Elizabeth Lapole and Michael Gardner of Hagerstown, MD, Alexis Heming of Knoxville, MD, Victoria Berry and husband Carl of Fredericksburg, VA, Nikki Chauvin and husband Mark of Baltimore. Great-grandchildren: Colby Gardner, CJ Berry and Olivia Chauvin.

He is also survived by three sisters, Elsie Wood, Rosemont, MD; Virginia Fry, Daytona Beach, FL; Lorraine Ambrose and husband Ralph, Brunswick, MD; sister-in-law Patsy Thompson, Frederick, MD. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald Thompson. He is survived by a special sister and brother-in-law, Betty Ann and Paul Muncy of Mertzon, TX; and childhood friends Albert Porter and Herman Deener, and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 26, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. at the Brownsville Church of the Brethren with Rev. Alan M. Smith officiating.

The family requests that memorial donations in lieu of flowers be sent to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105, or The Brownsville Church of the Brethren, 1911 Rohrersville Rd Knoxville, MD 21758.

Tony McChesney

Anthony A. "Tony" McChesney, 22, of Smithsburg and formerly of Boonsboro, died on Tuesday, February 23, 2010.

Born on October 31, 1987, in Olney, Maryland, he is the son of Alan M. And Cyndi M. (McChesney) Rosenberg of Boonsboro.

He was a student of the Boonsboro Schools and had attended classes at Frederick Community College.

Tony worked in construction, had a passion for welding and enjoyed customizing vehicles.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his fiance', DesiRee Carter and their one year old son, Carter Allen McChesney, both of Smithsburg; his sister, Jackie M. Rosenberg of Boonsboro; his brother, Robert L. Rosenberg of Frederick; his paternal grandparents, Morris and Beatrice (Dorfman) Rosenberg of Potomac, Maryland; and his maternal great-grandfather, Frank Hall of Fredericksburg, Virginia. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. Rev. Joseph I. Donovan, III will officiate. Interment will follow at the Boonsboro cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the funeral home.

Gwen Smallwood
Dec 16, 1957 - Wed Feb 24, 2010

Gwendolyn Y. "Gwen" Smallwood, 52, of Hagerstown, Maryland passed peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at her home.

Born on December 16, 1957, in Mt. Rainier, Maryland she is the daughter of Alva L. and Thelma J. Dunbar of West Virginia.

Mrs. Smallwood was employed as the Customer Service Manager at Rockville Printing and Graphics in Rockville, Maryland.

She was a member of the Ringgold Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 30 years Mark A. Smallwood, Sr.; her daughter, Cindy M. Smallwood and her friend Chris Murtha of York, Pennsylvania; three sons, Mark A. Smallwood, Jr. and his wife Emily of Frederick, Maryland, Chris L. Smallwood and Jason E. Smallwood and his wife Jennifer all of Hagerstown; one sister, Pam and her husband Tim Loeffler of West Virginia; one brother, Lee Dunbar and his wife Irene of West Virginia; three grandchildren, Adam M. Cornell and Emma G. Smallwood both of Hagerstown and Riley N. Smallwood of Frederick; her husband's parents, Gene and Elizabeth Smallwood of North Carolina and her husband's sister, Barbara and her husband Bill Siedel of Damascus, Maryland. She is also survived by many extended family and friends.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Ringgold Church of Christ, 14420 Barkdoll Road, Hagerstown, Maryland. Pastors Don Conley and Lee Dunbar will officiate. Interment will follow at the Ringgold cemetery.

Friends are invited to visit beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m.

Karen Sue Fletcher
September 18, 1957 - November 28, 2010

Karen Sue Fletcher, 53, of Hagerstown, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at her home.

Born Sept. 18, 1957 in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of John Philip Fletcher and the late Sally Lou Brining.

Karen worked for the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services in Rockville for 14 years.

Karen is survived by a daughter, Emily Yost; a son, Cory B. Fletcher; a sister, Krista Fletcher; and grandchildren, Alexis Noelle Fletcher and Zadyn Charles Fletcher, all of Hagerstown.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Beatrice Carpenter
July 28, 1916 - November 29, 2010

H. Beatrice "Bea" (Souder) Carpenter, 94, of Winding Oak Drive, formerly of Somerford Assisted Living, Hagerstown, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 29, 2010.

Bea was born on July 28, 1916 in Mathias, W.Va., in Hardy County. She was the daughter of the late Luther L. and Ida Victoria (Strawderman) Souder.

She was a graduate of Shepherdstown High School, attended Shepherd Business College, and graduated from West Virginia Business College. She was an active member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and was a well-recognized semi-professional basketball and sports player.

She was active with the Girl Scouts for many years; a member of the West Virginia Society of the Hagerstown area; AARP; Concerned Women of America; Christian Coalition; Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 155, Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and BCA-CV (Breast Cancer).

Bea was an employee of Sears, Roebuck and Co., retiring in 1979 after 24 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Rollin A. Carpenter, in 1992; sisters Daphna B. Mathias of Mathias, W.Va., and Reva R. Kave of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; brother, Marvin F. Souder of Lost City, W.Va.; and foster brother, Edwin Nazelrod of Columbus, Ohio.

Bea is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Carpenter (Kay) Derr of Hagerstown, Md.; two grandchildren, Tracy L. Riggleman of Middletown, Md., and Michael S. Derr and wife Talisa Bussard-Derr of State Line, Pa.; and six great-grandchildren, Donny O. Riggleman, Megan E. Riggleman, Tyler A. Riggleman, Devin Bussard, Josh Bussard, and Tyler Bussard.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Doug Courter officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven cemetery.

Friends will be received on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., and one hour before the service at the funeral home
