Evelyne M. Hurt
EASTON - Evelyne Martha Hudgins Hurt of Easton, died on Monday, August 7, 2000, at the William Hill Manor in Easton. She was 87.
Born in Roanoke, Va. on May 19, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Royal Lambert and Jetty Lou Page Hudgins.
She was a graduate of Jefferson Senior High School in Roanoke, Va. In February 1938 she married John W. Hurt Sr. They made their home in Roanoke, Va., then Northumberland, Pa. and in 1949 moved to Easton. Mrs. Hurt had primarily been a homemaker for her family. She did, however, cherish her many years in the Easton Jr. and Sr. High School, where many of the students were "her kids." She then took that experience to the St. Michaels Drive Inn Restaurant, a family operation that she managed along with her husband for many years. She was a volunteer at St. Marks Thrift Shop, Easton, where she was a member of the St. Marks Methodist Women.
Her husband, John William Hurt Sr., died in August 1989.
She was a charter member of the St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Easton and a member of the Miller Rebekah Lodge #65 in Easton.
Mrs. Hurt is survived by a daughter, Polly H. Watts of Easton; a son, John W. Hurt Jr. of Easton; a sister, Edna Hudgins of Newbern, N.C.; five grandchildren and 10 [1/2]1/2 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at St. Marks United Methodist Church, Easton, on Friday, August 11, 2000, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton with Jay Hurt, Lee Coulby Jr., Rick Coulby Sr. Jim Perkins, Dan Swann and Bill Ditman serving as pallbearers.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Marks Endowment Fund 100 Peachblossom Rd. Easton Md. 21601.

Mildred Lavina LeCates
CHESTERTOWN - Mildred Lavina LeCates of Chestertown died on August 7, 2000, at Magnolia Hall Nursing Center in Chestertown. She was 95.
Born near Chestertown, on July 6, 1905, she was the daughter of the late George V. Hatcherson and the late Eva Downey Hatcherson Lee.
Mrs. LeCates graduated from Chestertown High School and went to work for C&P Telephone Company as an operator for 40 years retiring in 1967. In 1929 she married Conrad "Simms" LeCates. He later died in 1994.
Mrs. LeCates was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #86 for 55 years where she served as Past Worthy Matron, Deputy Grand Lecturer from 1961 to 1963 and as Grand Representative to Utah from 1967 to 1971.
A brother, Robert R. Hatcherson Sr., and a sister, Mabel Taylor, are deceased.
Funeral services will be held graveside on Wednesday, August 9, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Chester Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday prior to the services, at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home from 11:30 to 12:15 p.m. when an Eastern Star Service will be held at 12:15 p.m.
In lieu of flowers may be made to the Kent and Queen Anne's Rescue Squad P.O. Box 126 Chestertown, Md. 21620.

Naomi E. Slacum
CAMBRIDGE - Naomi E. Slacum of Cambridge died Tuesday, August 8, 2000, at her home in Cambridge. She was 95.
Born in Cambridge on March 18, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Capt. Montgomery and Martha Todd.
She was raised and attended public schools in Dorchester County. As a young girl she traveled extensively on the Bay with her father who was a well-known boat captain. In 1923 she was married to Mr. Slacum and moved to Taylor's Island. Mr. Slacum was a clerk in the store of the late Bryon Harrington and later operated his own general store. In 1952 the Slacums moved to Cambridge. She worked at Shuffler's Restaurant, The Variety Corner, and later Craig's Drug Store until retiring. Mr. Slacum passed away in February of 1958.
Mrs. Slacum is survived by one daughter, Yvonne S. Dayton of Cambridge and six grandchildren. Three sons, Sidney E. Slacum, Gordon G. Slacum and C. Navy Slacum are deceased.
Funeral services will be graveside but private at Dorchester Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 502 Race St., Cambridge, MD. 21613.

Margaret Tompkins
EAST NEW MARKET - Margaret Tompkins of East New Market died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at Dorchester General Hospital, Cambridge. She was 94.
Born April 23, 1906 in Marcus Hook, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William L. and Mary McNamara.
She married Theodore S. Tompkins on Oct. 17, 1957 and moved from Marcus Hook to Green Point, after spending 20 years there as regular visitors. Mr. Tompkins died Sept. 5, 1987.
She was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Secretary, which she had attended for the last 70 years.
Mrs. Tompkins is survived by two nephews, Donald Proctor and Kenneth Gentry, both of Hurlock.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Thursday, Aug. 10 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Secretary. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery of the Eastern Shore, Beulah.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Dorchester County Unit, c/o Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, Md. 21613 or to the American Heart Association, c/o Lorraine Dickerson, 10 Harris Drive, Cambridge, Md. 21613.
Arrangements are by Zeller Funeral Home, East New Market.

Mary A. Clark
HARRINGTON, Del. - Mary A. Clark, of Harrington, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000 at Capital Nursing Home, Dover, Del. She was 101.
Born in Greensboro, she was the daughter of the late John and Augusta Spencer Urrie.
A homemaker, she was a lifelong member of Calvary Wesleyan Church.
Her husband, John Albert "Jack" Clark, died in 1964.
Mrs. Clark is survived by a son, Harold W. Clark of Dover; a daughter, Lucille M. Murphy of Dover; a sister, Anna Hubbard of Greensboro; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Six children, Stanley A., Orville A. and Irving J. Clark, Pauline Kohland, Ruth Bloom and Doris Gahagen, are deceased.
Services were held at Calvary Wesleyan Church, Harrington. Burial was at Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Elmer G. Donoho
PRESTON - Elmer G. Donoho Jr. of Preston died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at The Pines Genesis Eldercare in Easton. He was 83.
Born July 31, 1917 in Linkwood, Dorchester County, he was the son of the late Elmer G. Donoho Sr. and Lydia Bradley Donoho.
He began work with this father at Donoho Truck Body Building in Preston and had been employed as a truck driver by Tri-Gas & Oil Co. and Preston Trucking. He was a life-long member of the Preston Volunteer Fire Co. A World War II veteran, he served as a Tech 5 with the U.S. Army Troop C 6th Cavalry Mechanized Reconnaissance Squadron from Feb. 9, 1943 to Jan. 22, 1946. Serving in Central Europe, he received the African European Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
Mr. Donoho is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anna Burklew "Ann" Donoho, whom he married March 1, 1947; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry D. and Carol D. Donoho of Brookeville, Md.; three grandsons, Sean Michael Donoho, Bryan Andrew and Bryce E. Donoho. A brother, Bryce B. Donoho, is deceased.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Beulah. The Rev. Peter Smith will officiate.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Church of God, 101 Bloomingdale Ave., Federalsburg, Md. 21632.
Arrangements are by Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, in Federalsburg.

Mary H. Lawing
EASTON - Mary Hicks Lawing of Easton died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at the William Hill Manor in Easton. She was 91.
Born March 26, 1909 in Iredell County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Janola Kellar Hicks.
After graduating from high school in Iredell County, she graduated from the Cosmetologist School for Beauticians in North Carolina. As a cosmetologist and licensed electrologist, she worked for the House of Beauty in Maiden, N.C., until retiring in the early 1980s. After her husband, Alvin L. Lawing Sr., died in 1995, she moved to Easton.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Easton, a past member of the First Baptist Church in Orlando, Fla., where she sang in the choir, and a past member of the First Baptist Church in Maiden, N.C., where she was a soprano soloist and teacher.
Mrs. Lawing is survived by a son, Alvin L. Lawing Jr. of Easton, a granddaughter, and a great-grandson.
Private graveside services will be in Maiden, N.C.
