Roehrle, Verna H.

Verna Helen Roehrle, age 88, Formerly of Ellicott City, died Monday July 20, 2009 at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster, MD. She was born January 22, 1921 in Woodlawn, MD the daughter of the late Carroll G. Roehrle and late Helen A. Terry Roehrle. She was predeceased by her brother, Vernon C. Roehrle. She was a graduate of Catonsville High School, class of 1939. She retired from Ramsay Scarlett & Co., Inc. 1983. She served as chancellor to Sweden for Baltimore through an appointment by the king of Sweden. She was a lifelong member of Bethany United Church of Christ. She enjoyed gardening, travel, and being a member of the WKK Bethany Club. Surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Veronn W. and Effie Roehrle of Mt. Airy, one niece, three nephews, and two grandnieces. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM at Carroll Lutheran Village Krug Chapel/Auditorium on Wednesday July 22, 2009 after which time the funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM with Pastor Jimmie Schwartz officiating. Interment Woodlawn cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Carroll Lutheran Village, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD 21158.

Ostendorf, Dorothy P.

Dorothy Patricia Ostendorf (nee Brown), age 80, of Taylorsville formerly of Ellicott City, died on Tuesday July 21, 2009 at Ridge Overlook Assisted Living in Taylorsville. She was born September 20, 1928 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of the late Samuel T. Brown and the late Laura Stallings Brown. She was the devoted wife of the late Edgar David Ostendorf, married for 54 years. She was the mother of Craig D. Ostendorf of Baltimore and Donna P. Taylor of Westminster. Dear sister of Barbara Friend of Baltimore. Loving grandmother of Jennifer D. Housand of Westminster. Loving great grandmother of Kayla N. Hymiller and Brooke N. Hymiller. She was a homemaker, whose past hobbies included bowling, bingo, craft fairs, scrabble, and puzzle books. She also enjoyed her cat, Misty. She will be greatly missed by those she left behind. Private Services and interment. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to: Alzheimer’s Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D., Timonium, MD 21093.

Russell, James T.

James Thomas Russell, Sr., age 90, formerly of Eldersburg, died Thursday July 23, 2009 at Longview Nursing Home in Manchester. He was born May 21, 1919 in Maryland the son of the late John Joseph Russell and the late Clara Agnes Ross Russell. He was a truck driver for Motor Freight Express. He enjoyed Camping, crabbing and fishing. He was the loving husband of Elsie Ruth Russell (nee Teat). He was the loving father of James Thomas Russell, Jr. of West Virginia, Robert Alan Russell of Westminster, John Howard Russell of Baltimore, Nancy Bare of Westminster and Sandra A. Parks of Westminster and Rosemary Fisher of Severna Park. Also survived by 13 beautiful grandchildren and 12 beautiful great grandchildren. Catholic Prayer Service will be held Saturday July 25, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA. 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield (Beside South Carroll High School) with Deacon Donald Miller of St. John’s R.C. Church in Westminster officiating. Interment Lake View Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA on Friday from 3-5 & 7-9 PM.

Kenzie, LuAnn

LuAnn Kenzie (formerly Beavers), age 67, of Mt. Airy, died Sunday July 26, 2009 at her home. She was born August 27, 1941 in Carson City, Michigan, the daughter of the late Bernard Frank Kenzie and the late Marjorie Hazelton Kenzie. LuAnn grew up on Pleasant Lake northeast of Jackson, MI. She graduated from Jackson High School, Class of 1959. Upon graduation she moved to New York City and enrolled in flight attendant school from where she was recruited by Trailways Bus Company. She joined Trailways in Washington, D.C. as a Hostess servicing the Washington, D.C. to Boston, MA route. LuAnn left Trailways to marry and begin her family and, in 1974, settled in Mt. Airy, MD where she spent the remainder of her adult life. LuAnn had a true passion for life. She enjoyed an extensive network of friends and was a generous hostess always eager to gather her friends and family together. In more recent years she enjoyed traveling the U.S. and spent time in the Western and Southeastern states. She was a terrific bargain hunter and a dedicated yard-saler with what many considered to be a ‘’midas-touch’’. She was an executive Assistant for Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, MD for 8 years, retiring in March 2005. The memorial service will be held at Taylorsville United Methodist Church, 4356 Ridge Road, Taylorsville, MD by Reverend Sarah Dorrance on Friday July 31, 2009 at 11:00 AM, with a gathering at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Survived by:Children:Kathleen (and Marc) Butler, Newtown, PA, Maggie (and Marc) Garlock, Fruitland, MD Jennifer (and Tom) Maida, Emmitsburg, MD. Grandchildren: Ellie Butler, Hank Butler, Anna Garlock, Emily Garlock, Olivia Maida. Siblings: David (and Mary) Kenzie, McCormick, SC and Jack (and Mary Ann) Kenzie, Grass Lake, MI. Pre-deceased by:Parents:Bernard F. Kenzie and Marjorie Kenzie Sibling(s): Larry Kenzie, Frederick, MD. In addition to her family, LuAnn will be lovingly remembered and especially missed by Sue Littlejohn, Jackie Serfling, Joyce Perticone, Carol Hulver, Tammy Gonzales, Carolyn Hasbrook, Laverna White and Jane Frisch. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Carroll County Humane Society, 2517 Littlestown Pike, Westminster, MD 21158.

Ballard, Lena

Lena Finch Ballard, 80, of Ellicott City, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009 . Born November 4, 1928, in Morgan County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Thelma (Jones) Finch. She was the wife of the late Quentin L. Ballard. Dr. Ballard dedicated her professional life as an educator to the well being of children. She taught every grade from Kindergarten through high school, served as principal, supervisor of teachers, and adjunct professor. Locally, she worked as a reading specialist in Potomac, Maryland for the Montgomery County Public School System and later for the Baltimore County Public School System where she served as reading specialist at Johnnycake Middle School until retiring in 1991. Surviving in addition to her daughter, Alicia B. Ballard, are her siblings Alberta Hutchinson, June Finch, Alma Hutchinson, James Finch, Lloyd Finch, David Finch, George Finch, Jr., Phillip Finch, and Douglas Finch, as well as her many nieces and nephews. Her funeral will be held on August 5, 2009, at the Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty, KY. 606-743-3105. A memorial service will be held for Dr. Ballard at Bethany United Methodist Church in Ellicott City on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. 410-465-2919. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in the memory of Lena Finch Ballard to Bethany United Methodist Church, 2875 Bethany Lane, Ellicott City, MD 21042 .

Backof, Connie A.

Connie A. Backof (nee Adams), age 57, of Mt. Airy, died Sunday August 2, 2009 at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, MD., surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 7, 1952 in Louisville, KY. She was a Medical Secretary for Dr. McCorkle in Owings Mills for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Church in Libertytown, MD. Beloved Wife to Gary Backof of Mt. Airy. Devoted mother to Erika Christine Haynal of Mt. Airy. Loving mom to Adam Thomas Haynal. Loving daughter to Anna Christine Adams (nee Johnson) and the late Dean Elroy Adams. Dear sister to Cathy Bell-Thomas of Louisville, KY, Carolyn Ives of Simpsonville, KY, Carla Gay Kelley of Louisville, KY and Cynthia Nichols of Louisville, KY. Loving daughter in law to Frederick Thomas Backof and the late Christine Mary Backof and devoted sister in law to Michael and Kathy Backof and loving aunt to all her nieces and nephews. Carolyn Arnold Block, age 79, of Catonsville, died Tuesday August 4, 2009 at her home. She was born September 12, 1929 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of the late Edward Arnold and the late Ruth Knight Arnold. She was the wife of the late Stanley Francis Block. She was a housewife. She was the mother of Tim, Mark, Stephen, Kurt, Eric, Fritz and Franz Block. Sister of Susan Church. Grandmother of Laura Block, SarahYacoviello, Anna, Timothy, Allison, Grace and Brendan Block. Mildred Irene Stem (nee Glenn), age 80, of Sykesville, died Wednesday August 5, 2009 at Carroll Hospice, Inc.-Dove House in Westminster, MD. She was born March 19, 1929 in Inola, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Charles Glenn and the late Gertrude Glenn (nee Farley). She was the wife of Carlton W. Stem. She retired in 1984 after 36 years in the nursing department for the State of Maryland. She enjoyed working on their produce stand on Winands Road in Randallstown when they had the stand. She enjoyed gardening and country music. She was the mother and mother in law of Nancy M. & Sherman Peeling of Westminster, Gail J. Stem of Sykesville, Carlton E. and Gail M. Stem of Sykesville, Donna L. Stem and Curtis Combs of Woodbine. She was preceded in death by twin daughters, Barbara and Linda Stem. Sister of Kathleen Horne of Orlando, FL, Raymond Glenn of Woodbine, MD, Calvin Glenn of Orlando, FL and Jerry Glenn of Tacoma, Washington and the late Charles Warren Glenn, late Robert Hampton Glenn, late Mary Ethel Watkins, late Audrey Anderson and the late Wanda Burns. Also survived by 7 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday August 11, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA 1212 W. Evelyn Dora Manger Parks, 80 of Eldersburg, MD, died Sunday August 9, 2009 at the Dove House in Westminster. She was the spouse of the late Clarence Cook Parks. She was born January 23, 1929 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of the late Andrew Charles Manger, Sr. and late Edna Grace Saunders Manger. Mrs. Parks was formerly a Telephone Operator for C&P and AT&T. She was also a Co-owner and Co-Founder of the Tangier Crab House Randallstown Store. She enjoyed playing Bingo. Surviving her are her children and their spouses Jane G and Robert P. Mannel of Church Hill, TN, Andrew C and Patricia L. Parks of Westminster, William D and Sandra A. Parks of Westminster, Edward W. Parks of Eldersburg, Grandchildren: Sheryl, Karen, Sherry, Jennifer, Drew, Michael and Christopher . Also survived by 5 Great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by 3 brothers Andrew C. Manger, Jr, Charles E. Manger and Robert S. Manger. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, 11:30am, at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, P.A., 1212 West Old Liberty Rd. Henley, Jr., Dennis M.

Dennis Michael Henley, Jr., 32 of Westminster, MD, died August 11, 2009 after a Motorcycle accident traveling from police training to his duty assignment. He was born March 19, 1977 in Washington D.C. The son of Mary Theresa (Manley) Henley and Dennis Michael Henley, Sr. of Jacksonville, FL. Mr. Henley was a Metro Transit Police Officer and an Active Member of Winfield Volunteer Fire Department for over 15 years. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors, spending time with nieces and nephews. He enjoyed helping numerous charities with organized motorcycle rides. Surviving him in addition to his parents are Brother and Sister-in-law Sean M. and Erin Henley of Gettysburg, PA, Brother and Sister-in-Law Kevin J and Jennifer Henley of Uniontown, MD Sister and Brother-in-law Shannan H and Eric Zepp of Westminster, MD, Brother Bryan P Henley of Ave Maria, FL .Brother and Sister-in-law Stephen M. and Krista Henley of Ave Maria, FL. Also survived by 5 nieces and a nephew. Preceded in death by Brother Thomas Michael Henley. A Funeral Mass will be said Friday August 14, 2009 11 AM at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, MD route 26 and route 75 Libertytown, MD 21762.
