Mary C. Clem

WILLIAMSPORT - Mary Cecilia Clem, 97, of 16845 Hampton Road, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 10, 1900, in Emmitsburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Frederick J. and Bertha M. Riley Brown.

She retired from May Co. in California.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She was an avid bingo player at The Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway.

She is survived by one sister, Alice L. Ringer of Hagerstown; one niece, Louise Fahrney of Williamsport, with whom she resided; and additional nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lillie Brown, Ora Plank and Blanche Levin; and two brothers, Joshua Brown and Frederick Brown.

Graveside services will be at the convenience of the family in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to The Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway, 11114 Lincoln Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Virginia C. Jamison

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Virginia Cunningham Jamison, 86, of Route 4, died Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at her home.

Born Oct. 15, 1910, in Falling Waters, she was the daughter of the late James N. and Jeanne Stehley Cunningham.

She was a retired nurse for AT&T.

She is survived by two sisters, Laura Roberts of Falling Waters and Louise Williamson of Chevy Chase, Md.; and a close friend, Pear Fitch of Falling Waters.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane Beuhler and Betty Clohan.

Graveside services will be Saturday, July 5, at noon at Old Norborne Cemetery. The Rev. Robert S. Hill Jr. will officiate.

Arrangements are with Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Carlee V. Johns

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Carlee Victoria Johns died Thursday, June 19, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born June 19, 1997, she was the daughter of Brian L. and Victoria L. Jones Johns of 8651 Sheffield Manor, Waynesboro.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by maternal grandparents Victoria Mentzer Jones and Elmer Meade of Waynesboro; paternal grandmother Martha Myles of Mercersburg, Pa.; and great-grandparents Harry and Ruth Myers Mentzer of Waynesboro.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Willie James Johns.

Private graveside services will be at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Dwan N. Newsome will officiate.

Arrangements are being made by Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Claude T. Murray I

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Claude T. Murray I, 52, of Martinsburg, died Friday, June 20, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center.

Born Sept. 6, 1944, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late John and Irene Allen Murray.

He was employed by W.S. Frye Lime Quarry.

He was member of Second Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Faircloth Murray; two sons, Claude T. Murray II and Travis L. Murray, both of Martinsburg; five sisters, Mary Mills, Dorothy Brittner and Wanda Massie, all of Martinsburg, Helen Engles of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Delores Barber of Falling Waters, W.Va; three brothers, John Murray and David Murray, both of Martinsburg, and Raymond Murray of Winchester, Va.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Ann Murray; one sister, Margaret Anderson; and one brother, James Murray.

Services will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Robert Caplinger will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Hazel M. Reese

TULSA, Okla. - Hazel Marie Reese, 94, of Tulsa, died Friday, June 20, 1997, at Ambassador Manor Nursing Center in Tulsa.

Born Jan. 20, 1903, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Solomon and Mary Bailey George.

Her husband, E. Gerald Reese, died in 1985.

She was a biology and music graduate of Juniata College, and remained active in music all of her life.

She taught school in Washington County during the late 1930s and early 1940s.

She served as church organist at the following Hagerstown area churches: Church of the Brethren, Grace Brethren Church and Calvary Brethren Church, where she also served as choir director.

She was a member of Maranatha Brethren Church in Hagerstown, until moving to Tulsa.

She was a lifelong member of Treble Clef Club.

She is survived by two sons, David G. Reese of Edgewater, Fla., and Donald G. Reese of Tulsa; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Pipe Creek Cemetery near Linwood, Md.

There will be no public visitation.

Memorial donations may be made to Maranatha Brethren Church, 19835 Scott Hill Drive, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Arrangements are by Hartzler Funeral Home in New Windsor, Md.

Harry M. Chapman

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Harry M. Chapman, 85, of Martinsburg, and formerly of Bunker Hill, W.Va., died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport.

Born April 22, 1912, in Bunker Hill, he was the son of the late William Port and Edith Mason Chapman.

His wife, Evelyn Jones Chapman, died in 1989. They were married Dec. 23, 1936.

He owned and operated the former Coffee Cup Restaurant on Winchester Avenue, Martinsburg.

He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Stephenson, Va.

He was a former member of Inwood-Bunker Hill Lions Club.

He is survived by two daughters, Rita J. Morrison of Martinsburg, and Paige Ann Funk of Martinsburg, with whom he resided; one son, Gary Chapman of Stephenson; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Elsie M. McKenney will officiate. Burial will be in Bunker Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Irvin C. Sellers Sr.

BOONSBORO - Irvin C. "Herb" Sellers Sr., 89, of Reeders Memorial Home, died Friday, June 20, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 20, 1907, in Raid, Md., he was the son of the late Carl and Mary Myers Sellers.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a retired trackman with Western Maryland Railway.

He is survived by two daughters, Joan Pittsnogle of Smithsburg, and Jane Grove of Boonsboro; one sister, Ruth Forrest of Boonsboro; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Irvin C. "Sonny" Sellers Jr.; two sisters, Grace Selby and Edna Walker; and two brothers, Preston Sellers and Lester Sellers.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel in Martinsburg, W.Va. Bill Peeke, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 211 35th St., S.E., Charleston, W.Va. 25301.

Hilda E.S.N. Stone

FAIRPLAY - Hilda Edna Smith Nichols Stone, 50, of 7828 Abbott Drive, who died Thursday, June 19, 1997, is survived by her husband, Jerry Stone Sr.; and two stepsons, in addition to her other relatives.

Bettie F.H. Sprecher

Bettie Frances Hammond Sprecher, 79, of 19922 Sheridan Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 2, 1918, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Earl L. and Bettie Leila Grove Hammond.

She was a substitute teacher for many years with the Washington County school system and was formerly a receptionist with Tristate Electric.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1938, where she was a youth leader for Christian Endeavor with her husband since 1945, a co-teacher of the junior and high school students until her death, a teacher of Willing Workers Sunday School Class, a member of the Sharing Group and the church choir.

She also was a member of the Maryland State Christian Endeavor Alumni and volunteered at Coffman Nursing Home, where she offered Bible study.

She was a water color artist.

She is survived by her husband, Lester Eugene Sprecher; one daughter, Laurie Christine Simpson of Hagerstown; two sisters, Anna Lee Knapp of Hagerstown and Katherine Jessamine Jackson of Treasure Island, Fla.; one brother, Earl H. Hammond of Los Angeles; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her foster mother, Ada Ray Grove Couchman; one sister, Beatrice H. Hammond Michaelman; and one brother, Scott Couchman.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 712 Church St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George W. Ennis and the Rev. Darryl C. Zoller will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or to Grace United Methodist Church, 712 Church St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Wanda E. Dyche

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Wanda Elizabeth Dyche, 67, of Martinsburg, died Friday, June 20, 1997, at City Hospital.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. William C. Crowe will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ralph G. Black

Ralph Grayson Black, 82, of 1044 Columbia Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at his home.

Born April 14, 1915, in Union Bridge, Md., he was the son of the late Charles E. and Cora Lee Wolfe Black.

His first wife, Mary Ethel Pheabus Black, and his second wife, Martha E. Watkins Black, preceded him in death.

He was employed with Western Maryland Railway for 42 years.

He was a member and president of United Transportation Union Local 633.

He is survived by three daughters, Mary Lee Ann Martin of Hagerstown, Irene Lou Ellen Stickell of Charles Town, W.Va., and Olive LaRue Dillion of Greencastle, Pa.; one stepson, Stanley H. Sweeny of Massachusetts; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Olivia Lois Black; one son, Kenneth L. Black; one sister, Lois Cartzendafner; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. James R. Stauffer will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
