George S. Haines Sr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - George S. Haines Sr., 75, of 984 Pine Stump Road, died Friday, June 20, 1997, at his home.

Born Sept. 14, 1921, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Percy S. and Lulu M. Shoop Haines.

His first wife, Zoe Stoops Haines, preceded him in death.

He was employed as a boiler fireman at Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, retiring in 1984.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Mount Carmel United Brethren Church in Orrtanna, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Martin Haines; two daughters, Teresa L. Kaiser and Victoria L. Gourley, both of Orrtanna; six sons, George S. Haines Jr. of Knightstown, Pa., Kenneth D. Haines Sr., Donald R. Haines Sr. and James E. Haines, all of Fairfield, Pa., Robert M. Haines of Gettysburg, Pa., and Brian M. Haines of Chambersburg; stepchildren, Judy Blair, Kim Hann, Connie Starr and Jody Hann, all of Chambersburg, Karen Mickey of Shippensburg, Pa., Jeff Gelwicks of Harrisburg, Pa., Randy Gelwicks of Carlisle, Pa., Rebecca Scott and Sharon Couch, both of Georgia; two sisters, Gladys L. Cramer of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Mary Ellen Gale of Waynesboro, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandson; 17 stepgrandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel H. Haines and Velma I. Moats; one brother, Wilbur H. Haines; and one grandson.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Coldspring United Brethren Church, 1051 Brookens Road, Fayetteville, Pa. The Rev. Donald L. Bender will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery in Chambersburg.

A viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Charlotte G. Shiflett

RANSON, W.Va. - Charlotte G. Shiflett, 85, of Ranson, died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at Heartland Nursing Home in Martinsburg, W.Va.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. James Chambly will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., where Women of the Moose Chapter 1028 will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1000, Chicago, Ill. 60611; or to the charity of one's choice.

Johnny W. Shiver Sr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Johnny Wade Shiver Sr., 69, of 440 Larkspur Lane, died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at University Hospital/Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa.

Born Oct. 22, 1927, in Mayo, Fla., he was the son of the late Joseph F. Shiver, and Ethel Hewitt Shiver Paramore.

He was a graduate of Mayo High School in Mayo.

He was a line truck driver with Great Southern/Ryder/PIE Truck Lines, retiring in 1991 after 47 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Open Door Church in Chambersburg.

He was a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of Riverview Lodge 306 F.&A.M. and Scottish Rite, both in Jacksonville, Fla. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mayo, Disabled American Veterans Post 110, and Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46, both in Chambersburg, and Teamsters Local 992 in Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Sirman Shiver, whom he married Dec. 20, 1952; two daughters, Sharon Lynn Sowers of Sanford, N.C., and Mary Kathleen Shiver of Chambersburg; two sons, Dr. Johnny Wade Shiver Jr. of Doylestown, Pa., and Victor Wilson Shiver of San Antonio; one sister, Elouise L. Snider of Mayo; one brother, William F. Shiver of Macclenny, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family in Mayo. Burial will be in Airline Baptist Cemetery in Mayo.

There will be no public viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the American Heart Association, 252 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Local arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Maxine E. Smith

Maxine Elizabeth Smith, 74, of 15 N. Cleveland Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, June 20, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 25, 1923, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Ray F. and Elizabeth L. Manspeaker Greene.

Her husband, William Lee Smith, died in 1993.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda L. Thomas and Debra M. Kegarise, both of Hagerstown; five sons, Richard L. Smith of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Jeffery L. Smith of Gerrardstown, W.Va., John W. Smith, Gregory S. Smith and David S. Smith, all of Hagerstown; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jack Fullen will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m., where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m.

Roy C. Angle Sr.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Roy C. Angle Sr., 72, of 11722 Stull Road, died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born July 24, 1924, in Welsh Run, Pa., he was the son of the late Clarence and Estella Mae Smith Angle.

He was a 1943 graduate of Mercersburg High School.

Early in life, he farmed and then was a salesman for Wayne Feed Supply Co. in Chambersburg, Pa., retiring in 1986.

He was a member of Waynesboro Grace Brethren Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, a former trustee and church board member and as an usher. He also was a member of the "Whosoever Will" Sunday School Class and the Keenagers group.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Grace Rice Angle, whom he married April 9, 1949; two daughters, LaVonne M. Young and Janice L. Oliver, both of Greencastle; one son, Roy C. Angle Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; three sisters, Beulah Angle of Greencastle, Ruth Angle Yeager of St. Thomas, and Sara Jane Angle Horst of Hagerstown; one brother, Robert E. Angle of Mercersburg, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Hazel Gerhart, Vera Zeger, Eleanor Angle, and Helen Bernice Angle; and three brothers, Lloyd Angle, Clayton Angle and John Angle.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Waynesboro Grace Brethren Church, 250 Philadelphia Ave., Waynesboro. The Rev. Roger K. Myers and the Rev. Donald L. Viebranz will officiate. Burial will be in Price's Church Cemetery near Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the memorial fund of Waynesboro Grace Brethren Church, 250 Philadelphia Ave., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Juanita L. Shatzley

YORK, Pa. - Juanita L. Shatzley, 83, of 998 S. Russell St., and formerly of 4518 Race Track Road, St. Thomas, Pa., died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at Misericordia Nursing Home in York.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, with Monsignor Thomas R. Brenner as celebrant. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation Central Pennsylvania Chapter, 17 S. 19th St., Camp Hill, Pa. 17011; or to the American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Margaret E. Hatcher

KNOXVILLE - Margaret Elizabeth Hatcher, 77, of 3716 South Mountain Road, died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at Northhampton Manor Nursing Home in Frederick, Md.

Born April 7, 1920, in Bedford County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter Luther Sr. and Ruth Naomi Wade Engle.

She attended Boonsboro Bible Church in Boonsboro.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Pershing W. Hatcher; four daughters, Elaine Christiansen of Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Lewis of Inwood, W.Va., Janet Lee Hatcher of Knoxville, and Shirley Hale of Jefferson, Md.; one son, Roger W. Hatcher of Hagerstown; one brother, Walter Engle Jr. of Knoxville; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick, Md. The Rev. Ralph Campbell Jr. and the Rev. Paul W. Heefner will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Lovettsville, Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Wanda L. Mertz

Wanda Lee Mertz, 61, of 12233 Wild Rose Lane, Hagerstown, died Friday, June 20, 1997, at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh.

Born March 18, 1936, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Klahris O. and Mary K. Gaines King.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Donald L. Mertz Sr.; two daughters, Sharon K. Young of Smithsburg and Diana L. Leatherman of Hagerstown; two sons, Donald L. Mertz Jr. of Funkstown, and Ronald L. Mertz Sr. of Hagerstown; 11 grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Gloria Brown.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. John W. Schildt will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Grace E. Ebersole

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Grace Elizabeth Ebersole, 90, of Charles Town, died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born Sept. 13, 1906, in Smithsburg, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Anna M. Shriver Welty.

Her husband, Guy Preston Ebersole Sr., died in 1956.

She was a graduate of Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va.

She was a charter member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Charles Town.

She was a retired school teacher, teaching for 10 years in the Jefferson County, W.Va., school system; and for 14 years in the Washington County school system.

She also was a member of Jefferson County Chapter 799 AARP, Jefferson County Council on Aging, West Virginia Retired Teachers Association and a volunteer with R.S.V.P. and at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson.

She is survived by three sons, Guy Preston Ebersole Jr. of Freeport, Fla., James W. Ebersole of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Richard M. Ebersole of Westminster, Md.; one sister, Edith "Peg" Frey of Smithsburg; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mazie Miller and Elsie Welty; and three brothers, Richard Welty, John Welty and Lloyd Welty.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Charles Town. The Rev. Richard E. Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town.

Friends will be received at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 119 S. Seminary St., Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Reginald E. Holladay

Reginald Eugene "Doc" Holladay, 77, of 20610 Bluebird Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at his home.

Born Nov. 6, 1919, in Rockmart, Ga., he was the son of the late Robert Russell and Myrtle Gladden Holladay.

His wife, Agnes E. "Betty" Holladay, died in 1993.

He attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., and later graduated from Georgia State University.

He was plant manager of Marquette Cement Co. in Hagerstown from 1970 to 1977, and later retired from Lonestar Cement Co. in Nashville, Tenn., before returning to Hagerstown.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 8th Air Force U.S. Army Air Corps.

He volunteered with the local chapter of the American Red Cross, and was a member of Antietam Photographic Society and B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378.

He is survived by three daughters, Wanda Johnson of Washington, N.C., Ann Luther of Atlanta, and June Jarkey of Middletown, Md.; one son, James R. Holladay of Long Beach, Calif.; one sister, Bette Phillips of Atlanta; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Billy Russell Holladay.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor Zuck will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742; or to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
