January 21, 2000

Raymond Morris Smith died Thursday January 21st. 2000 in his home of heart failure. He was 61.

Mr. Smith was born in Chestertown, Md. the son of the late Morris and Sarah G. Smith. He was a 1956 graduate of Sudlersville High School, Sudlersville, Md. Mr. Smith was the founder and owner of Smiths Plumbing and Heating and he operated his business for 36 years. Mr. Smith was an avid NASCAR racing fan, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and gardening. Mr. Smith was a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge and the Cheswold Vol. Fire Co. He also enjoyed helping with the Marydel Vol. Fire Co. and there Ladies Auxillary.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 14 years, Barbara L. Smith, two sons, Raymond M. Smith Jr. of Millington, Md.and Randall M. Smith and his wife Kristie of Cleveland, Ohio, one sister, Virginia Carroll of Tennessee, two stepsons, Timothy Gardener of Maryland and Richard Gardener of Dover, De., and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 26, 2000 at 1pm from the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. 21651, where friends may call one hour prior.

Interment will be private

Contributions may be made to the Queen Annes Hospice Foundation 300 Del Rhoades Ave. Queenstown, Md. 21658-1365 or the Marydel Vol. Fire Co. P.O. Box 400 Marydel, De. 19964

Lenore Emily Kaufman of Royal Oak died on Friday, January 21, 2000 at the Talbot Hospice House. She was 88.

Born in Baltimore on March 2, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Henry W. and Amelia Diegel Bendt. As a homemaker, she was a resident of Ellicott City for over 38 years before moving to Royal Oak in 1983. Her husband, Oliver Kaufman, is deceased.

Mrs. Kaufman was a member of the Women of the Moose, Lodge # 1520, Easton.

Mrs. Kaufman is survived by two sisters, Ida Balzanna of Littlestown, PA, and Stella Warren of Baltimore; a brother, Charles Bendt of Baltimore; and a beloved dear friend and companion, Charles Stanfield of Royal Oak. A sister, Henrietta Heber, and a brother, Henry Bendt, are deceased.

Memorial services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Saturday, January 29, 2000 at 2:00 PM. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 585 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

Helen Prettyman Galt of Easton died on Friday, January 21, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 88.

Born in Bridgeville, DE on September 7, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Joshua and Sarah Smith Prettyman. She married Edward T. Newnam and they lived in St. Michaels where they were co-owners of Newnam's Market for over twenty years. Mr. Newnam died in 1969. She married William P. Galt in 1972 and he later died in 1977. She moved to William Hill manor in Easton in 1992.

Mrs. Galt was a member and past treasurer of the St. Luke's United Methodist Church in St. Michaels. She was also a member of the Eastern Star in St. Michaels, the Women's Club of St. Michaels, and the Edge Creek Boat Club.

Mrs. Galt is survived by six nieces and five nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Tuesday, January 25, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 207, St. Michaels, MD 21663.

M. Marguerite Thompson of Chestertown, MD, formally of Church Hill, MD, died on January 21, 2000 at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 84 years of age.

She was born in Trappe Station, Maryland, the daughter of the late William P. & Eliza Worthington [Ivens] Milby. Mrs. Thompson was a graduate of Ridgely High School class of 1932. She married Baynard B. Thompson of Barclay, Md. and worked as a devoted farmer’s wife and mother until her family was grown. Then she worked for Fox’s Department Store in Chestertown and Centreville, MD. On Wednesday evenings she enjoyed working at Dixon’s Sale Barn in Crumpton, MD. She was a member of the Bridgetown United Methodist Church in Bridgetown, MD.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, the late Baynard B. Thompson who died in 1990, a son: the late William B Thompson who died in 1935, and a brother the late William Cole.

She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Peggy and Donald Bottomley of Chestertown, MD, Dorothy and Charlie Abram of Chestertown, MD, and Sally Ivens Thompson-Birkmire and Dr. Robert Birkmire of Newark, DE, a sister Mary Cole Ivens of Ridgely, MD., along with 6 grandsons, Kevin and Kenny Bottomley, Bill and Marc Beals, John Woodall and Scott Wallace. Ten great grandchildren also survive her.

Services will be held on Monday, January 24th at 1 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home 130 Speer Rd. Chestertown, Md. where relatives and friends may call from 11 AM – 1PM, (2 hours prior). Interment will be in Greensboro Cemetery.

Elise Gretchen Ritmiller of Queenstown, MD. died at home on January 21, 2000. She was 90.

Born on January 11, 1910 in Baltimore, MD. she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lizette Maser Seichert. She attended school in Baltimore, MD where she worked to help support her family. She married George Raymond Ritmiller in Alexandria, VA. In October 1936. They resided in Baltimore where she was a homemaker. Mr. Ritmiller predeceased her in 1971. Mrs. Ritmiller moved to Queenstown in 1979. She was a member of Church of Christ in Baltimore, MD and Saint Jerome's Parish in Baltimore, MD. She was currently attending the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD.

She is survived by a son George Raymond Ritmiller of Baltimore, MD. a daughter Lila Irene Holmes of Queenstown, MD. a sister in law Margaret Vondersmith, nine (9) grandchildren and twelve (12) Great grandchildren. A daughter Doris Ann Ritmiller, 2 brothers and 2 sisters predeceased her.

Funeral Service will be held 11am on Wednesday January 26, 2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Family and Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday January 25, 2000 from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. Interment will be in New Cathedral Cemetery in Baltimore, MD. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to The Love Fund c/o Kent Island United Methodist Church P.O. Box 308 Chester, MD. 21619.

January 20, 2000

Elsie Mae Wood of Centreville, MD. died Thursday January 20, 2000 at the Corsica Hills Nursing Center in Centreville, MD. She was 74.

Born on December 23, 1925 at home in Sudlersville, MD. She was the daughter of the late Silas L. and Elsie Mae Brinsfield Weller. She attended school in Sudlersville, MD. She began working as a waitress for Granary Restaurant in Cecil County. On Feb. 3, 1951 she married Joseph Haston Wood, Jr. of Centreville, MD. Whom predeceased her on September 11, 1997. They resided in Centrteville, MD. Where Mrs. Wood was a homemaker until returning to work as a waitress for Circus Restaurant (now Trailways) and for the Queen Anne’s County Board of Education as Cafeteria Staff at the Queen Anne’s County High School until becoming disabled in 1991. She was a member of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Centreville, MD.

Ms. Wood is survived by a son Joseph H. Wood III of Magnolia, DE a daughter Cynthia Ann Mitchell of Centreville, MD. two (2) sisters Grace Usilton of Smyrna, DE and Frances Ruff of Sudlersville, MD. a brother Charles Weller of Sudlersville, MD. and Three (3) grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held 2 PM on Tuesday January 25, 2000 at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Centreville, MD. Family and friends may call on Monday January 24,2000 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD. from 7 PM to 9PM. Interment will be in Chesterfield Cemetery in Centreville, MD. Family requests that memorial contributions be made to American Heart Association QA Chapter 300 Hope Road Centreville, MD. 21617.

January 19, 2000

Violet Smith Stubbs died Wednesday, January 19 at her home in Sudlersville. She was 78.

Violet Smith Stubbs was born in Ridgeley, Md. October 28, 1921. Violet Stubbs married the late William Roosevelt Stubbs. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and she greatly enjoyed caring for the elderly. Violet Stubbs is a member of the Liberty Lighthouse Church in Chestertown, Md. She was very dedicated to her church.

Violet Smith Stubbs is survived by two sons; Randy Lee Stubbs of Millington, Md. and William Stubbs of Centreville, Md., three daughters; Martha Cockrill of Millington, Md., Nancy Lee Clark of Parsonsbury, Md., and Joan S. Hales of Salisbury, Md., one brother; Franklin (Frankie) Smith of Crumpton, Md., four sisters; Beatrice Wallace of Maryland, Pearle Chaffinch of Maryland, Doris Marvel of Millington, Md., Patricia Crew of Delaware, fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St. Millington, Md. on Saturday, January 22, 2000 at 11:00 a.m.

Friends may call one hour prior for a visitation.Interment will be held at the Sudlersville Cemetery in Sudlersville, Md.

Robert "Allen" Seward of Easton, formerly of Grasonville, died at his home on Wednesday, January 19, 2000. He was 69.

Born February 19, 1930 in Grasonville, MD, he was the son of Roland and Florence Elizabeth Seward Miller of Grasonville. In 1951 he married Shirley Adele Brobst. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 until 1953 and then began working for his uncle in the plumbing business, obtaining his master plumbers license. In 1958 he worked for the Maryland Community Developers as Superintendent of Construction until 1984 when the company became K & P Builders and he continued with them until his retirement in 1994. Following his retirement he worked part time for Hog Neck Golf Course. In his spare time he loved playing golf and carving decoys.

He was a former member of the Kent Island Yacht Club and was also Past Commander of the Grasonville VFW and a life member of the Easton VFW.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Seward is survived by two sons, Larry Seward and his wife, Shirley of Ridgely and Gregory Seward and his wife, Janet of Chestertown; two grandchildren, Gavin Seward and Dana Seward, both of Chestertown. A son, Ronald Robert Seward died in 1995.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville on Saturday, January 22, 2000 at 2:00. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.

Burial will be at Stevensville Cemetery, Stevensville, Md.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Maryland Affilitate Inc., 407 Central Avenue, Reisterstown, MD 21136.

Suddenly on January 19, 2000 Elizabeth (Liz) Claire Flower of Pawpaw West Virginia, formerly of Centreville, MD died at her home of a apparent Heart Attack. She was 47 years old. She was born in June 28, 1952 the daughter of Elizabeth Matthews Flower and the late Edwin Alfred Flower and the late grand daughter of the late: Huldah Sickles and Evertt D. Matthews and Elsa Hofstadt Flower and Herbert J. Flower. She attended Queen Anne’s County High School. Miss. Flower latter received a Bachelor of Science at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA in. Miss Flower was an antique dealer in Philadelphia and Robertsville New Jersey. In recent years Miss Flower traded in antiques in West Virginia.

Her mother survives her: Elizabeth Matthews Flower of Burisville, Centreville, MD.

A Graveside service will be held at the Chesterfield Cemetery, on Tuesday at 11:am. The family would like contribution to Bethany-Price United Methodist Church, or to the charity of you choice. Arrangements by the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Centreville MD.

January 18. 2000

Victoria Iris Bateman of Centreville, MD died at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD.

Born on January 18, 2000. God allowed the family to love her for seven hours. The daughter of Mark Allen and Jacquelyn Berga Bateman of Centreville, MD. She is survived by; her maternal grandparents, Gary and Susan Berga, her paternal grandparents, Chester and Garnett Bateman and Cathy Bateman, and a sister, Kayla Bateman of Centreville, MD.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 23, 2000 at 3:00 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Centerville, MD. Interment will be in Chesterfield Cemetery, centreville, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Victoria I. Bateman Memorial Fund C/O Centreville National Bank 109 N. Commerce St. P.O. Box 400 Centreville, MD. 21617.

January 17, 2000

Yolanda Antonia Siggers Caputo of Annapolis, Maryland died at Future Care Chesapeake in Arnold, MD. on January 17, 2000. She was 80.

She was born in San Jose, Costa Rica, Central America on December 15, 1919. The daughter of the late Dr. Paul Victor and Clemencia Guevara Siggers. She grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. After graduating from High School, she attended Sophie Newcombe College. During World War II, she worked for the office of censorship in New Orleans. In 1947 she moved to N.W. Washington DC and worked for the Atomic Energy Commission until 1951. Then she worked for the Institute of Inter American Affairs, being stationed in Paraguay, South America. She returned to the states in 1956. She married Daniel G. Caputo of Washington DC on September 7, 1957. He predeceased her on February 24, 1995. She raised their family in Kensington, MD. and later moved to Blackbeard Farm, Queenstown, MD in 1969.

Mrs. Caputo was a member of the Blue Army and also a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church of Chester, MD as well as St. Andrew’s by the Bay Catholic Church in Annapolis, MD.

Mrs. Caputo is survived by one son, John Anthony Caputo of Chestertown, MD and three daughters; Christina Diana Caputo Mulliken of Virginia Beach, VA, Gabrielle Caputo Miller of Annapolis, MD and Paula Victoria Caputo. She was also a grandmother of two.

Services will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2000 at St. Andrew’s by the Bay Catholic Church in Annapolis, MD. at 10:00 AM. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, January 19, 2000 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD. Interment will be in Maryland Veteran’s Cemetery in Crownsville, MD.
