Claude W. Fogle Jr.

ANSTEAD, W.Va. - Claude William Fogle Jr., 57, formerly of Hagerstown and Frederick, Md., died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at his home.

Born June 19, 1940, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Claude W. Fogle Sr. and Nora M. Hurst Fogle Holt.

He was employed as an auto mechanic for most of his life.

He is survived by three daughters, Denise K. Williams of Plant City, Fla., Shari Lynn Fogle of Lakeland, Fla., and Dina Ping of Cincinnati, Ohio; one son, Claude W. Fogle III of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Reatha Gue of Brunswick, Md., and Rosemary Hoffman of Frederick; two brothers, Roy Fogle of Milwaukee, Wis., and Charles Fogle of Frederick; one uncle; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Lillian Fogle; and one brother, George Fogle.

Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Union Chapel Cemetery, Daysville Road, Daysville, Md. The Rev. Carroll A. Doggett Jr. will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are made by Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, Frederick.

Ray E. DeVault

Ray Edward "Bill" DeVault, 71, of 17543 York Road, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at his home.

Born July 6, 1925, in Maugansville, he was the son of the late Ray Clifton DeVault and Julia Carbaugh DeVault Kennedy.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He retired from Frederick Trading Co. in 1991. He previously was employed by Schindel and Rohr & Co. for 37 years.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He attended Christ Reformed Church, Hagerstown.

He was member of BPO Elks Lodge 378, Hagerstown; Funkstown American Legion Post 211; and was a former member of Waynesboro (Pa.) Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy J. DeVault at home; one daughter, Kristin L. DeVault of Hagerstown; two sons, Dirk DeVault of Hagerstown and Douglas DeVault of Burke, Va.; one sister, Beverly Downs of Fayetteville, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Lou Roddy.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Don R. Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Elvis J. Phillips

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Elvis J. Phillips, 28, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at his home.

Born July 12, 1968, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Jerome J. Phillips Sr. and Edna Virginia George Phillips. He was the stepson of Barbara Phillips-Kline of Hagerstown.

He was an activist of Broward County, Fla., and gained national acclaim for camping on a billboard for 29 days in May 1993. The effort raised $50,000 for AIDS research. He developed and organized the campaign for the service organization Center One/Anyone In Distress and American Red Cross, Fla.

He is survived by three sisters, Tammy Maus, Barby Phillips and Denia Phillips, all of Hagerstown; five brothers, Jerome J. Phillips Jr. of Elyria, Ohio, Kevin Phillips of Cumberland, Jerome J. Phillips III, Jeremy Phillips and Joshua Phillips, all of Hagerstown; maternal grandmother, Mary George of Ridgely, W.Va.; a paternal grandmother, Wanita Kendall of Elyria, Ohio; three aunts; and six uncles.

Services will be at Union Cemetery, Centerville, Pa. Memorial services will be in Fort Lauderdale.

Elvin S. Long Sr.

HANCOCK - Elvin S. "Toot" Long Sr., 74, of Hancock, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at College View Nursing Home, Frederick, Md.

Born Dec. 31, 1922, in Thurmont, Md., he was a son of the late Lowell Lee and Myrtle Ruth Wagner Long.

He retired as a carpenter from Potomac Construction Co. of Virginia in 1990.

He is survived by his longtime companion Frances Showe; ex-wife, Anna A. Long of Rocky Ridge, Md.; two daughters, Cheryl R. Long of Rocky Ridge and Bonnie G. Thompson of Frederick; one son, Elvin S. Long Jr. of Frederick.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Benjamin Long and Vernon Long.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Thurmont Funeral Home of Robert E. Dailey & Son, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, Md. The Rev. Larry Eby will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gloria L. Giffin

Gloria Louise Giffin, 73, formerly of 916 View St., Hagerstown, and a resident of Ravenwood Nursing Home, Hagerstown, died Thursday, June 26, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born April 20, 1924, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Irene Elizabeth Wiles Tagg, of Ravenwood Nursing Home, and the late Ralph Selby Tagg Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Everett Giffin Sr.

She was member of Christ Lutheran Church.

She was volunteer coordinator at Ravenwood Nursing Home for 20 years; past president of Friends of Ravenwood; and a volunteer coordinator of Washington County Hospital's snack bar.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Irene E. Giffin Rhodes of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sons, Ralph E. Giffin of Greencastle, Pa., and William E. Giffin Jr. of St. Charles, Ill.; 14 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Lewis W. Giffin; and two brothers, Ivan Tagg and Ralph S. Tagg Jr.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond H. Shriver will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday one hour prior to services.

Memorial donations may be made to Ravenwood Nursing Home, 1183 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Estelle M. Myers

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Estelle M. Myers, 78, of Berkeley Springs, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, in Berkeley Springs.

Born Aug. 21, 1918, in Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Mary Wofastak Baldhosky.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Myers, in 1996.

She retired from Sears in Suitland, Md.

She was of Catholic faith.

She is survived by one son, John W. Myers Jr. of Berkeley Springs; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Tom E. Myers; one sister, Lorraine Kishel; and one brother, Stanley Baldhosky.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. John Ledford will officiate. Burial will be in Duckwall Cemetery, Morgan County, W.Va.

A viewing will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where a vigil service will be celebrated at 7 p.m.

Harriett C. Fischer

FREDERICK, Md. - Harriett Catherine Fischer, 82, of 403 Culler Ave., Frederick, died Thursday, June 26, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 10, 1914, in Middletown, Md., she was a daughter of the late Harry and Laura Alexander Garrett.

She was a bookkeeper.

A musician, she once provided music for the Rev. Billy Graham; she played organ at several area churches.

She survived by her husband, John Francis Fischer, whom she married in July 1971; one daughter, Phyllis Ann Akers of Waynesboro, Pa.; three sons, the Rev. Douglas E. Liston of Wheeling, W.Va., Ronald W. Fischer of Frederick and Kenneth M. Fischer of New Market, Md.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 1201 N. Market St., Frederick. The Rev. Linda M. Glass will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association, 125 E. Patrick St., Suite 2, Frederick, Md. 21701-5653.

Arthur W. Oller

RINGGOLD - Arthur Woodring Oller, 64, of 14403 Barkdoll Road, Ringgold, died Monday, June 23, 1997, at his home.

Born Sept. 22, 1932, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Russell Monroe and Helen Sanders Woodring Oller.

He was a 1950 graduate of Waynesboro Area High School, Waynesboro.

He entered the journeymans trade after high school at Landis Tool, Waynesboro. He retired from Landis Tool after 45 years of service.

He served in the Navy Air Division of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After four years of service he received an honorable discharge.

He was member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.

He was member VFW Joe McLaughlin Post, Waynesboro; AARP; and American Legion Morris Frock Post 45, Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Oller; one daughter, Lori Wies of Cumming, Ga.; one sister, Anna A. Oller of Waynesboro; one grandson; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, corners of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro. The Rev. Don Conley will officiate. Burial will be in Ringgold Cemetery.

Theodore S. Rogers Jr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Theodore Sterling "Teddy" Rogers Jr., 23, of 7 Pen Mar St., Waynesboro, Pa., died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, as a result of an automobile accident.

Born July 24, 1973, in Yuma, Ariz., he was the son of Theodore S. Rogers Sr. of Waynesboro and Delores Johnson of Miami.

He was a 1992 graduate of Waynesboro Senior High School.

He was employed by Roadway Express, Williamsport, as dock supervisor. He was previously employed by Grove Worldwide, Shady Grove, Pa.

He played on the Waynesboro High School football team and City League Basketball League, Waynesboro.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepmother, Deborah S. Izer Rogers; two sisters, Shaunette Rogers of Miami and Autumn Reely of Waynesboro; two brothers, Benjamin Rogers and Christopher Rogers, both of Waynesboro; grandparents, Romeo and Thomasina Simpson of Homestead, Fla., and Barbara Izer of Waynesboro; his fiancee, Lisa Baer, Waynesboro; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Greater Deliverance Christian Center, 102 Linden Ave., Waynesboro. Pastor L. Monique McCleary will officiate. Burial will be in Burns Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Ralph L. Leigh

Ralph Leon Leigh, 66, of Byron Place, Hagerstown, died Thursday, June 26, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born July 7, 1930, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late Fred A. and Mary Hester Mullin Leigh.

He was supervisor with several local concrete contractors.

He served with the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by two sisters, Shirley Kershner and Freda Weaver, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Warren Leigh of Hagerstown; four nieces; three nephews; five great-nieces and one great-nephew.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Sterling Keeney will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Clear Spring.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ira Stanley Ammons

FAIRVIEW, W.Va. - Ira Stanley Ammons, 79, of Fairview, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at his home.

Born May 2, 1918, in Fairview, he was the son of the late Jesse Lee and Rose May Shriver Ammons.

He retired from Westinghouse.

He was a member of the Pumpkin Center Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Brookover Ammons; five sons, William Jesse Tennant of Youngstown, Ohio, Melvin Larry Ammons of Hagerstown, Ronald Leon Ammons and Leonard French Ammons, both of Fairview, and Roger Adam Ammons of Boonsboro; one sister, Iona Moody of Edgewater, Md.; one brother, Irno Ammons of Fairview; 12 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Icel Talbert, Iris McCord and Inis Custer; and three brothers, Isaac Jesse Ammons, Milfred Ammons and Monfred Ammons.

Services will be today at 10 a.m. at the Domico Funeral Home Curry Chapel, 414 Gaston Ave., Fairmont. Nick Deiger, evangelist, will officiate. Burial will be in the Marion County Grandview Memorial Gardens.
