Elmer H. Baker

MYERSVILLE, Md. - Elmer "Hez" Hezekiah Baker, 76, of Coxey Brown Road, Myersville, died Friday, June 27, 1997, at his home.

Born Aug. 14, 1920, in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late Harry C. and Effie E. Summers Baker.

He retired after 43 years with Phoenix Inc., Frederick, Md.

He was member Harmony Church of the Brethren, Myersville, where he was a bell ringer for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Catherine Dutrow Baker; three daughters, Nancy L. Graham of Frederick, Ruth Ann Hartsock and Cathy Capino, all of Myersville; one son, Harry E. Baker of Myersville; two sisters, Helen Brandenburg and Thelma Nell, both of Myersville; one brother, Charles Baker of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna Mary Baker, Dorothy L. Baker and Beulah E. Kephart; two brothers, Reuben D. Baker and Melvin L. Baker.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Harmony Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Tracy L. Wiser will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville, Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Harmony Church of the Brethren, c/o Lois Willard, 3924 Brethren Church Road, Myersville, Md. 21773.

Anita L. Olden

Anita Louise Olden, 58, of 1131 Outer Drive, Hagerstown, died Friday, June 27, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 14, 1939, in Washington, Pa., she was the daughter of Frank Mattax of Hagerstown and the late Birdie Luellen Mattax.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Leroy Olden.

She was employed by Food Lion Inc. on Virginia Avenue, Hagerstown.

She was member of Hagerstown Presbyterian Church.

She was member of Funkstown American Legion Post 211 Auxiliary; former member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority; former member of Young Democrats.

In addition to her father, she is survived by one daughter, Lori Ann Lushbaugh of Hagerstown; two sons, MSgt. Gregory Alan Olden of Verona, Italy, and David L. Olden of Chambersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Eileen Andrews of Hagerstown and Christine Miller of Maugansville; one brother, Edward Mattax of Frederick, Md.; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. John W. Ailstock will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at funeral home.

Clarence B. Kilmer Jr.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Clarence B. Kilmer Jr., 82, of Route 6, Martinsburg, died Friday, June 27, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born Aug. 2, 1914, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Clarence B. and Ida Sperow Kilmer Sr.

He was a 1933 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

He was a retired farmer.

He was a member of Tuscarora Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Dillow Kilmer at home; a sister-in-law, Anna Kilmer of Martinsburg; three nieces; and cousins.

The last of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by one brother, David Kilmer.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Bruce R. McClendon will officiate. Burial will be private in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home Monday from noon to 1 p.m.

Clementine C. Piccolomini

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Clementine C. Piccolomini, 84, of Paynes Ford Road, Kearneysville, died Saturday, June 28, 1997.

Born Feb. 17, 1913, in Havertown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Agostino and Frances Angelucci Saladini.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Christano F. Piccolomini.

She was retired and previously employed by City Hospital Dietary Department, Martinsburg, W.Va.

She was member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church; and a member of Catholic Daughters.

She is survived by three daughters, Christine Louise C. Brown of Stafford, Va., Elizabeth Ann Newhouse of Omaha, Neb., and Mary F. Wagner of Kearneysville, W.Va.; three sisters, Clara Shoemaker of Florida, Rose Stuck and Ara Corrado, both of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Louise Moore, Mary Petrucci and Elizabeth Saladini; one brother, Angelo Saladini; and one uncle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Rev. John V. DiBacco Jr. will officiate. Burial prayers will be in Pleasant View Memory Garden.

The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King, St., Martinsburg, Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. where a vigil service will be held at 8 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

The family will meet at Brown Funeral Home Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. before services.

Cathryn R. Heflin

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Cathryn R. Heflin, 73, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born June 4, 1924, in Nashville, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Richard Blair and Minnesota Hazelwood Russell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Heflin.

She was a retired Certified Nurses Assistant.

She is survived by two daughters, Cathy Heflin Tener of St. Petersburg and Amy Heflin Goller of Hedgesville, W.Va.; one son, Robert Timothy Heflin of Gainesville, Fla.; two sisters, Rachel Pitt of Houston, Texas, and Opal Dozier of Nashville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; 23 nieces and nephews; 33 great-nieces and nephews; and two great-great-nephews.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Edgefield Baptist Church, Nashville. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Nashville.

Local arrangements are made by Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Margaretta C. Joy

LITTLE ORLEANS, Md. - Margaretta Cora Joy, 65, of Old Adams Road, Little Orleans, died Friday, June 27, 1997, at Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

Born Dec. 25, 1931, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late William and Hazel Munson McCusker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis H. Joy.

She was employed by Sideling Hill Exxon, Little Orleans. She was previously employed by G.C. Murphy Co., Hancock.

She was a member of Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church, Hancock.

She attended Piney Plains Methodist Womens Group.

She is survived by two daughters, Robin Stotler and Linda Fletcher, both of Little Orleans; four sisters, Genevieve Plante of Williamsport, Fern Hart of Warfordsburg, Pa., Lorna Thomas of Salisbury, Md., and Harriet Yost of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; three brothers, Robert McCusker, LeRoy McCusker and Henry McCusker, all of Hancock; seven grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Millard McCusker and Harry William McCusker.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Piney Plains United Methodist Church. The Rev. Alan M. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Piney Plains United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, and at the church one hour prior to services. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Hospice Unit, 600 Memorial Ave., Cumberland, Md. 21502.

Josephine S. Bailey

BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Josephine Snyder Bailey, 75, of Route 1, Bunker Hill, died Friday, June 27, 1997, in City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born July 8, 1921, in Bunker Hill, she was the daughter of the late George William and Harriet Shade Snyder.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Curtis Bailey.

She was retired and formerly employed by Potomac Sportswear.

She attended Mount View Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by six sisters, Amanda Russell of Winchester, Va., Alta Minnick of Reliance, Va., Bertha Custer of Ridgeway, W.Va., Mildred Neff of Stephen City, Va., and Edith Tyser and Isabel Spitzer, both of Bunker Hill.

She was preceded in death by her twin, Joseph Snyder; three sisters, Mable McCarty, Mary Bowman and Loretta Hawkins; one brother, Isaac Snyder.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home. The Rev. James Peyton and the Rev. Carl A. Burleson will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends at funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Lawrence Ritter

Lawrence "Pitt" Ritter, 87, of 289 Frederick St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 15, 1909, in Winchester, Va., he was the son of the late Walter W. and Mattie Aleshire Ritter.

He retired in 1975. He was previously employed by Massey Ford for 12 years.

He was a veteran of World War I, serving with U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. New York in the Asiatic and European Theaters.

He was member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.

He was member Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anna Mae Ritter; one daughter, Gloria Flook of Hagerstown; one son, Kenneth E. Ritter of Smithsburg; and one brother, Garland R. Ritter of Stephenson, Va.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Page Ritter; and one grandson.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Military graveside services will be conducted by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at funeral home.

Dr. Richard V. Hauver

WILLIAMSPORT - Dr. Richard V. Hauver, 89, a resident of Homewood Retirement Center, died Thursday, June 26, 1997.

Born in Middletown, Md., in 1907, he was the son of the late Dr. Roy V. and Margaret E. Remsberg Hauver.

He attended public schools in Middletown, and graduated from high school in 1924. He attended St. Johns College in Annapolis, and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, graduating in 1931. In his junior year, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, National Honorary Medical Fraternity. He served his internship and surgical residency at Church Home and Infirmary in Baltimore, now known as Church Hospital.

In 1935, he began the practice of general surgery in Hagerstown, continuing until his retirement in 1971, interrupted once by his service during World War II. He served as president of the County Medical Society and medical staff of Washington County Hospital, and served as chief of surgery for 13 years.

He was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1940. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical Society as well as state and local medical societies.

During World War II, he spent three years in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army as head of the general surgical team of the 2nd Auxiliary Surgical Group, which saw service in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He participated in the landing at Anzio.

He was awarded the Legion of Merit for "rendering the best possible service to wounded soldiers in the most forward areas where surgery could be performed." Immediately following the war, he co-authored the chapter on colon and rectal surgery in World War II for the War Department. He rose in rank from captain to lieutenant colonel.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church.

He also was a member of American Legion, Museum of Fine Arts, Washington County Historical Society and Fountain Head Country Club. He was a former member of Downtown Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma G. Baker Hauver; two daughters, Carol Ann H. Emerick of Ellicott City, Md., and Marco Island, Fla., and Linda H. Lamb of Houston; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Laureda Kefauver; and two brothers, Arthur L. Hauver and Colman R. Hauver.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Zion Reformed Church, 201 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jack Dale Cook will officiate. Burial will be in the Reformed Cemetery in Middletown.

Memorial donations may be made to Zion Reformed Church, 201 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Arrangements are being handled by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.
