Roy W. Reid

Roy Wendel Reid, 71, of Clear Brook, Va., died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center.

Born Jan. 15, 1926, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Oliver Wendel Holmes and Katherine Wright Reid.

His first wife, Doris Reid, died in 1953. His second wife, Marjorie Reid, died in 1983.

He was a retired truck driver with Wonder Bread Co. in Maryland.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

He attended Charles Town Baptist Church.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Charles Town.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Katherine Mills Reid; three daughters, Patricia Sorber of Alexandria, Va., Karen Campbell of Martinsburg and Melanie Harrelson of Charles Town; one son, Roy W. Reid Jr. of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three stepdaughters, Patricia Nichols of Chambersburg, Pa., Mary Lazzara of Sarasota, Fla., and Judy Peterson of Charles Town; one stepson, Frank Ranalli of Ranson; one brother, Max Reid of Martinsburg; two half-sisters, Helen Coates and Delores Oates, both of Martinsburg; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one stepson, Sonny Dubel; and one half-brother, James Riner.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel in Martinsburg. The Rev. Wyman Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Harry D. Palmer

WATERFALL, Pa. - Harry D. Palmer, 75, of Star Route 3, died Sunday, June 29, 1997, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born March 22, 1922, in Erie, Pa., he was the son of the late George and Bertha Palmer.

He was employed as a representative for the Christian Record Braille Foundation for 16 years.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Needmore Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he served as an elder.

He was a member of the National Society of Poets, and Mount Aetna Volunteer Fire Co. in Hagerstown, where he served as president for 11 years.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline J. Kenerson Palmer, whom he married Sept. 22, 1957; nine children, Maredith Torres of Glendale, Calif., Trisha Poland of Calico Rock, Ark., Donna Horton of New Bern, N.C., Joyce Lytton of Lilburn, Ga., Debbe Palmer of Sanbornton, N.H., Sandi Higgins of West Palm Beach, Fla., Harry D. Palmer Jr. of Slidell, La., Karen Henry of Randolph, N.J., and Lisa Greenawalt of Harrisburg, Pa.; one grandson, Jesse Palmer, who is being raised in the Palmer home; one sister, Rita Titus of Erie, Pa.; 23 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Needmore Seventh-day Adventist Church in Needmore, Pa. David Elliott, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Pocasset Hill Cemetery in Tiverton, R.I.

Friends may call at M.R. Brown Funeral Home in Hustontown, Pa., today from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church Wednesday 30 minutes prior to the service.

Mary K. Burnette

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Mary K. Burnette, 62, of Kearneysville, died Monday, June 30, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born June 2, 1935, in Beckley, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Richard and Ora Blankenship McGrady.

She is survived by her husband, James D. Burnette; one daughter, Maxine M. Tarallo of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three sons, Roger D. McGrady of Baltimore, and James D. Burnette Jr. and Andrew E. Burnett, both of Kearneysville; two sisters, Loreen Taylor of Radcliff, Ky., and Cora Shrewsbury of Hedgesville, W.Va.; three brothers, Dale McGrady of Radcliff, Ky., Herbert McGrady of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Ralph McGrady of Baltimore; and seven grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg. The Rev. C.D. Coley will officiate.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg.

Doris W. Dailey

GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Doris Webb Dailey, 76, of Gaithersburg, and formerly of Charles Town, W.Va., died Sunday, June 29, 1997, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Shady Grove, Md.

Born Aug. 16, 1920, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Arthur and Monica Mae Claggett Webb.

Her husband, J. Kerfeit Dailey, preceded her in death.

She was a retired doctor's office receptionist.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town.

She is survived by one brother, Lester Webb of Bolivar, W.Va.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Viola Brinkman and Lelia Miller.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Asbury Methodist Village Benevolent Care Fund, c/o Asbury Foundation, 201 Russell Ave., Gaithersburg, Md. 20877.

Arrangements are by Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry.

Benny L. Brown

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Benny L. Brown, 65, of Martinsburg, died Monday, June 30, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born June 11, 1932, in American Forks, Utah, he was the son of the late Ben and Eleanor Reeves Brown.

He retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years. He also retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, a charter member of the West Virginia Sheriff's Association, and a member of Fraternal Order of Police and West Virginia Deer Hunter's Association.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Edith Detter Brown; one daughter, Paula D. Brown of Ellicott City, Md.; two sons, Kenneth A. Brown of Martinsburg, and Floyd B. Brown of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Kevin W. Brown.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel in Martinsburg. The Rev. Al Clipp will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Paraments Fund of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 700 New York Ave., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Mildred A. Coffman

QUINCY, Pa. - Mildred A. Coffman, 97, of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of Hoover House in Waynesboro, Pa., died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at the home.

Born July 30, 1899, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Fannie Beard Coffman.

She was a graduate of Waynesboro High School and Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. She then attended Chicago School of Music in Chicago, and also studied music at Southern Seminary College in Buena Vista, Va.

She taught piano and organ music until her retirement.

She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Waynesboro.

She also was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and Joe Stickel American Legion Post 15 Ladies Auxiliary in Waynesboro.

She is the last of her immediate family. She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Coffman.

Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, corner of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro. The Rev. Jay A. Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are by Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home Inc. in Waynesboro.

Lawrence Ritter

Lawrence "Pitt" Ritter, 87, of 289 Frederick St., Hagerstown, who died Saturday, June 28, 1997, was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. New York in the Asian and European theaters.

Dexter V. Gould

DARNESTOWN, Md. - Dexter Vernon Gould, 48, of Darnestown, and Great Cacapon, W.Va., died Sunday, June 29, 1997, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born Aug. 25, 1948, in Winchester, Mass., he was the son of Harry Vernon and Nellie Maude "Pat" Sickles Gould of Canton, Mass.

He was a 1966 graduate of Reading High School, Reading, Mass. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1970. He earned his master's degree in business administration from Northeastern University, Boston, in 1982.

He was a certified public accountant.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served aboard the U.S.S. Ranger in Vietnam from 1970 to 1974.

He began working for the U.S. government in 1976. He was director of audit operations with the U.S. Treasury Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, in Washington, D.C.

He was of the Unitarian faith.

He was a member of International Association of Arson Investigators and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

He was a supporter of the Nature Conservancy.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 23 years, Margot Reisch-Macenka Gould; one sister, Cynthia Gould Gregory of Salem, N.H.; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Carol Gould.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at First Parish Unitarian Universalist, 1508 Washington St., Canton. Burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to Nature Conservancy, attn: MEM PROC, 1815 N. Lynn St., Arlington, Va. 22209.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs.

Thelma R. Stilwell

AUSTIN, Texas - Thelma Rush Stilwell, of Austin, and formerly of Shanghai, W.Va., died Monday, June 23, 1997.

Born in 1919, she grew up in Pittsburgh.

Her husband, Jack Stilwell, died in 1980. They were married in 1941.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

She also was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, and other charitable and community organizations.

She is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline Neuman of Austin, and Mary S. Miller of Corpus Christi, Texas; and four grandchildren, Mitra Miller, Arisa Miller, Dario Miller and Lyrica Miller.

Services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va. The Rev. Robert S. Hill Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Shanghai Presbyterian Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Shanghai Cemetery, c/o Ruby Ashton, P.O. Box 21, Gerrardstown, W.Va. 25420.

William V. White

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - William Vannoy White, 73, of Route 2, died Sunday, June 29, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born March 24, 1924, in Lenoir, N.C., he was the son of the late Frank and Cornelia Miller Boyd.

He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of North Carolina.

He was a public health adviser; director of Communicable Disease Program; and chief of Region III Health Education and Welfare. He served on the Bureau of Disease Prevention and Environmental Control; was executive director of the National Commission on Product Safety; and was Food and Drug Administration director of bureau information.

He was a real estate broker in Charles Town, W.Va.

He was a warden and trustee of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Mount Mission, W.Va., and was a member of the administrative board of directors, Churchmen Diocese of West Virginia.

He was vice president of Shannondale Club Ltd., president and director of Citizens of Shannondale, and a member of Old Opera House.

He also was a member of Sigma Nu, Phi Nu Alpha Clubs, and Thomas Jefferson Washington Civitan Clubs.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Robinson White; two daughters, Cynthia Elma Holland of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Melinda Carol Robertson of Leesburg, Va.; one son, William V. White II of Harpers Ferry; one sister; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va. The Rev. Edward Green will officiate. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Peterkin Conference Center, Romney, W.Va.
