Barbara A. Slauson

Barbara Ann Slauson, 64, of 518 S. Cannon Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at her home.

Born Sept. 13, 1932, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Mary Virginia Cline Doarnberger of Hagerstown and the late Grason Doarnberger.

She received training as registered nurse at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

She was employed by St. Joseph's Hospital, Baltimore. She retired in 1994.

She is survived by her husband, Philip G. Slauson; one brother, Robert Doarnberger of Columbia, Md.; and six nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial contributions may be made to SPCA, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are made by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Floyd W. Weiser

Floyd William Weiser, 53, of 7 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 17, 1943, in Baltimore, he was the son of Woodrow W. and Nellie B. Dishong Younker of Hagerstown.

He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pa.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1965; and in the National Guard Reserve.

He was a member of Hagerstown Bible Church.

He was a member of American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Ruth Crowe of Lexington Park, Md., and Lou Ann Childress of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Allen M. Weiser of State Line, Pa., and Samuel Weiser of Granite City, Ill.; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert A. Marshall will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown, where military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Morris Frock Post 42.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the family to defray expenses. Donations may be sent to Allen M. Weiser, P.O. Box 424, State Line, Pa. 17263.

Russell L. Hovermale

WINTHROP, Mass. - Russell L. Hovermale, 57, of Winthrop, and formerly of Big Springs, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, in Boston.

Born Dec. 31, 1939, in Indian Springs, he was the son of the late William P. Hovermale Sr. and Ada Hovermale.

He was formerly employed by Boston Iron Works.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Burns Hovermale; two sons, Russell Hovermale Jr. of Boston and Royce Hovermale of Winthrop; sisters, Marie Hart, Jeanne Schaeffer and Nancy Clingerman, all of Hagerstown, Peggy Plotner of Centralia, Wash., and Joyce Marconi of Greencastle, Pa.; and brothers, Robert Hovermale, Charles Hovermale, Don Hovermale and Harold Hovermale, all of Hagerstown, and Gary Hovermale of San Antonio.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William Hovermale Jr.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Kirby's Funeral Home, Winthrop.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Bertha M. Clark

BIG SPRING - Bertha May Clark, 87, formerly of Big Spring, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport.

Born Dec. 20, 1909, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Nora E. Hawk Ross.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy P. Clark, in 1974.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Clear Spring, and a member of Ladies Sunday School Class.

She was a member of Elia Church Women's Group of Williamsport; and AARP.

She is survived by two daughters, Deborah M. McGuire of Chambersburg, Pa., and Barbara E. Paschal of Greensboro, N.C.; one grandson; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Margaretta Ross; and one brother, Charles Ross.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, c/o the Matthew Chaney, treasurer, 12527 National Pike, Clear Spring, Md. 21722.

Arrangements are by Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, Clear Spring.

Lewis. T. Smith Jr.

Lewis T. "Jim" Smith Jr., 74, of 10825 Allen Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 2, 1923, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Lewis T. Smith Sr. and Ethel M. Shrader Smith.

He was employed by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va., retiring in 1980 after more than 37 years.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

He was a member of VFW Post 6319, Greencastle, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy E. Smith of Hagerstown; one son, Kevin J. Smith of Baltimore; two brothers, Charles H. Smith of Hagerstown and Ronald L. Smith of Oxnard, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Bardi J. Ebersole; and one sister, Winona M. Flair.

Services will be Saturday at the Chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Andrew J. Cooney will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Linda A.H.V. Tucker

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Linda Ann Helm Varner Tucker, 54, of 640 Mickey's Inn Road, Lot 6, Chambersburg, Pa., died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at home.

Born Dec. 14, 1942, in Shippensburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Margaret E. Doyle Newell of Shippensburg and the late Robert K. Newell Sr.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles M. Varner Sr.

She was a 1961 graduate of the former Shippensburg High School, Shippensburg.

She was previously employed by Cresmart, Shippensburg; Ross Distribution, Carlisle, Pa.; and the former R&S Dress Factory, Shippensburg.

She was a member of Chuch of God Pentecostal, Shippensburg.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, John P. Tucker of Maury City, Tenn.; five daughters, Darlen S. Varner Cook and Peggy A. Varner Price, both of Chambersburg, Kathy L. Varner Robinson of Greencastle, Pa., Rhonda J. Varner of Shippensburg and Millie F. Varner of Chambersburg; one son, Charles M. Varner Jr. of Walnut Bottom, Pa.; seven sisters, Barbara J. Cummings of Newville, Pa.; Anna M. Martin of Chambersburg, Sandra K. Martin of Orrstown, Pa., and Christine M. Newell, Audrey E. Rosenberry, Valerie L. Jones and Betty J. Newell, all of Shippensburg; four brothers, Robert K. Newell Jr. and Brian R. Newell, both of Shippensburg, and Robert K. Newell Jr. and Roger L. Newell, both of Newville; 14 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Ronald E. Newell.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg. The Rev. Reuben C. Coldsmith will officiate. Burial will be in Cleversburg Cemetery, Southhampton Township, Cumberland County, Pa.

A viewing will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donald R. Russell

Donald R. "Abe" Russell, 73, of 829 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 1, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late George Hudson and Madeline Bower Russell.

He retired from Potomac Edison Co. on Feb. 1, 1985, after 39 years.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he participated in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy during World War II.

He was a member of Church of the Brethren, Hagerstown.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose; American Legion, Funkstown Post 211; and Potomac Edison Forerunners Club. He was a 50-year member of BPOE 378. He fished and hunted.

He is survived by one sister, Caroline Russell Palkovitz of Hagerstown; one niece; and one nephew.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Rachel Black will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ray G. Weaver

FAIRPLAY - Ray G. Weaver, 74, of Fairplay, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, in Fairplay.

Born May 16, 1923, in Downsville, Md., he was a son of the late George Edward and Mary Edith Cline Weaver.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Lorrain Weaver, in 1989.

He was a 1941 graduate of Williamsport High School.

He retired from Sire Power, Hagerstown, after 19 years.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

He was a member of Downsville Christian Church, Williamsport.

He was a member of American Legion Post 236, Sharpsburg; Williamsport Red Men Lodge 84, Williamsport; and District 12 Ruritans.

He is survived by two sons, Douglas E. Weaver and Michael R. Weaver, both of Fairplay; one brother, Carl P. Weaver of Fairplay; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Manor Church Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. E. Reese Davis will officiate.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard North, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Downsville Christian Church, 8641 Downsville Pike, Williamsport, Md. 21675.

Ronald G. Jackson

GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Ronald G. Jackson, 79, of Georgetown, S.C., and formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Saturday, June 21, 1997, in South Carolina.

Born Sept. 18, 1917, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Rush Jackson and Evelyn Gehret Jackson.

He had owned American Dental Lab in Cumberland.

He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Cumberland.

He was member BPOE Lodge 63, Cumberland.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Murphy of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; two sons, Ronald Jackson of Alexandria, Va., and Gary Jackson of Chambersburg; one brother, Tom Jackson of Sun City, Ariz.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, June 25, in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
