John R. Bingham
KNOXVILLE, Md. - John R. "Jack" Bingham, 79, of 19500 Garretts Mills Road, Knoxville, who died June 30, 1997, was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Youngins Pace Bingham, in 1995.
He was preceded in death by six sisters, Maratha B. Hightman, Grace B. Holder, Mabel B. Gordon, Ann B. Lutman, Helen L. Bingham and Kathryn B. Pearson; and three brothers, Arthur Bingham, Charles W. Bingham and Abner B. Bingham.
Betty L. Church
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Betty Lou Church, 67, of Hedgesville, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Nov. 15, 1929, in Oldfields, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Homer P. and Rosalie Miller Baldwin.
She retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by two daughters, Cindy Jimenez and Christina Reid, both of Hedgesville; one son, Shawn M. Church of Hedgesville; one sister, Alice Welch of Martinsburg; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Deanna D. Church; one infant son, William P. Church; and one brother, Homer M. Baldwin.
A memorial service will be held today at noon at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, 2060 Rosedale Road, Martinsburg. The Rev. Margaret Raven will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.
There will be no visitation.
Frederick T. Smith
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Frederick T. Smith, 83, of 5019 Treher Road, Fayetteville, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.
Born Feb. 14, 1914, in Altoona, Pa., he was a son of the late Frederick T. Smith Sr. and Mary C. Gebhart Smith.
He was employed by Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg. He retired in July, 1978.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.
He was of the Catholic faith.
He was dedicated to his family.
He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Army Relief War Show. He was a member and former commander of the Charles W. McCleary Post 78 Disabled American Veterans, Chambersburg.
He is survived by his wife, Betty F. Miller Smith, at home; three sons, Myron E. Smith of Warminster, Pa., John T. Smith of Fayetteville and Donald J. Shaffer of Upper Strasburg, Pa.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son; one sister; and three brothers.
Services will be today at 11 a.m. in Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Jude T. Dawson-Amoah will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.
Military graveside services will be conducted by members of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Chambersburg.
Visitation was Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Russell L. Hose
Russell LeRoy Hose, 71, of 533 Frederick St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 7, 1926, in Clear Spring, he was a son of the late Lewis J. Hose Sr. and Emma L. Spielman Hose.
He was employed by Grove Worldwide. He retired in 1991 after 16 years of service. He was formerly employed by various shoe companies.
He was a member of Maranatha Brethren Church.
He was a member of Grove Retirees Club; and AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda M. Shives Hose of Hagerstown; two daughters, Constance I. Martin and Anita C. Peck, both of Hagerstown; one daughter-in-law, Traci A. Humphries of Hagerstown; one son, Darrin E. Hose of Hagerstown; one sister, Ruth Welty of Hagerstown; one brother, Lewis J. Hose Jr. of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Lee Hose; and two brothers, Harry M. Hose and Charles A. Hose.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard North, Hagerstown. Pastor Jay Fretz and Pastor Ron Shank will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
Visitation will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Paul H. Slifer
ROHRERSVILLE - Paul Harold Slifer, 66, of 20326 Locust Grove Road, Rohrersville, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 16, 1930, in Rohrersville, he was a son of the late Luther Beard Slifer and Orpha May Grimm Slifer.
He retired in 1989 from Maryland Correctional Institution, Hagerstown.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean War.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Rohrersville.
He was a member of Clopper-Michael Post 10 American Legion, Boonsboro; and AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley M. Palmer Slifer, whom he married June 8, 1956; two sons, Brenden P. Slifer of Keedysville and Kevin A. Slifer at home; one sister, Doris Mehaffey of Boonsboro; three brothers, William H. Slifer and James C. Slifer, both of Boonsboro, and Donald H. Slifer of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth M. Reeder; and two brothers, Rodney L. Slifer and John L. Slifer.
Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Carolyn Price will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m.

Maxine M. Spielman
MARION, Pa. - Maxine M. Spielman, 70, of 5825 Front St., Marion, formerly of Sycamore Grove Road, Chambersburg, Pa., died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Oct. 4, 1926, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Holtry and Sarah E. Hendricks Holtry.
She was preceded in death by her third husband, Charles E. Spielman Jr., on Jan. 19, 1983.
She was a homemaker.
She attended First Church of God, Chambersburg.
She was a member of AARP; Hume McNeal Buyers AMVETS Post 224, Chambersburg; and Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46, Chambersburg.
She is survived by one daughter, Deborah A. Shuman of Marion; three sons, Paul W. Besecker II of Marion and Robert R. Shuman Jr. and Wayne E. Shuman, both of Chambersburg; four sisters, Doris Miller and Vivian Shuman, both of St. Thomas, Pa., and Betty Hughes and Saundra Spidel, both of Chambersburg; four brothers, Benjamin Holtry, Ronald Holtry and Terry Holtry, all of Chambersburg, and Hull Holtry of Fort Littleton, Pa.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert R. Shuman Sr.; her second husband, Paul W. Besecker; and three brothers.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. K. Hull Byers and the Rev. Earl E. Mills will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Wayne R. Murphy
FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Wayne R. Murphy, 62, of Falling Waters, died Thursday, June 26, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born Feb. 20, 1935, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was a son of the late Vernon R. and Mary Knight Murphy Sr.
He was employed by General Motors.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean War. He was a former member of 167th West Virginia Air National Guard Air Medic Unit.
He was a member of Second Baptist Church.
He is survived by nieces.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon Murphy and Gene Murphy.
Services will be today at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. R. Shawn Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Baker Heights, W.Va.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Services for Lewis T. "Jim" Smith Jr., 74, of 10825 Allen Ave., Hagerstown, who died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, will be today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard North, Hagerstown.
Mildred Romaine McClosky
Mildred Romaine McClosky, 79, of 55 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at her home.
Born April 21, 1918, in Hagerstown, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Marshall and Jennie Mae Hovis Fouche.
She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
She was a member of AARP.
She is survived by one sister, Charlotte L. Mongan of Hagerstown; three brothers, Lester C. Fouche of Austin, Texas, Marvin E. Fouche of Clearwater, Fla., and Arthur B. Fouche of Hagerstown; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Anna E. Fouche, Geraldine V. Kreger, Clara V. Simon and Aurelia E. Fouche; and five brothers, Frederick F. Fouche, Luther R. Fouche, Paul W. Fouche, Herschel A. Fouche and Robert W. Fouche.
Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Harold A. Downey
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Harold Albert "Pete" Downey, 92, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at his home.
Born March 1, 1905, in Mount Jewett, Pa., he was the son of the late Albert Olen and Anna Koch Downey.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Rice Downey.
He served as a sheriff's deputy under sheriffs Edwin Miller, Calvin Bayer and Lyle Catlett. He and his father operated Downey Post Advertising Co. He previously was employed by Veterans Affairs Fire Department; Berkeley Lumber Co.; and Old National Bank. He served as a constable. He served as a Berkeley County Commissioner from 1979 to 1985.
He was a 50-year member of Calvary United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Chambers Men's Bible Class at church; Izaac Walton League of America, Berkeley and Jefferson counties; United Commercial Travelers; Fraternal Order of Police; Winchester Gun Club; Martinsburg Lions Club; AARP; National Rifle Association; Branch Mountain Hunting Club; Grace 120 Loyal Order of Moose; and a charter member of No. 3 Fire Hall.
He won second place in the 1951 National Trapshooting Association Championship, Vandalia, Ohio. He was an avid sportsman and hunter, competing in 1925 National Rifle Competition, Camp Perry, Ohio.
He is survived by one daughter, Mary Rennie Downey Richmond of Martinsburg; one son, Martin W. Bill of Morgantown, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann D. Simpson; two sisters, Ruth D. Wheeler and Esther D. Hopper; and two brothers, Olen Cook Downey and Roy Martin Downey.
Services will be today at 1 p.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church. The Rev. Al Clipp, the Rev. Lester Kisner and the Rev. John E. Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family received friends Friday from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.
