Edgar Fisher Wildeson

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Edgar Fisher Wildeson, 84, of 44602 Manheim Road, Waynesboro, died Wednesday, July 2, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Jan. 25, 1913, in New Franklin, Pa., he was the son of the late Jacob R. and Laura B. Fisher Wildeson.

He lived his early life in the New Franklin area.

He was a 1930 graduate of Quincy High School.

He was a farmer in his early life. He was later a machinist for Landis-Teledyne Machine Co., Waynesboro. He retired from Landis in the early 1980s. He was also employed by NAPA Auto Parts, Waynesboro, as a part-time delivery man for 10 years.

He was a member of Solomons Evangelical Lutheran Church of Grindstone Hill. He also was a member of Men's Adult Sunday School class and served on the church council.

He was an associate member of Citizens National Bank of Greencastle Board of Directors, Greencastle, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine Kyler Wildeson, whom he married Sept. 25, 1935; four sons, Donald E. Wildeson of Chambersburg, Robert L. Wildeson and Richard L. Wildeson, both of Waynesboro and Carroll R. Wildeson of Greencastle; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Gail Wildeson; and one brother, Roy Wildeson.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. Michael E. Allwein will officiate. Burial will be in Grindstone Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Solomons Evangelical Lutheran Church in the name of Edger F. Wildeson, 4856 Wayne Road, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Herbert D. Nuckels

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Herbert David Nuckels, 87, of 371 E. Queen St., Chambersburg, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at his home.

Born July 26, 1909, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Evers D. Nuckels and Laura M. Palmer Nuckels.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lora Jean Hull Nuckels of Chambersburg.

He was an engineer for Pennsylvania Railroad.

He was a member of Friendship Fire Co., Chambersburg; AARP; and Cumberland Valley Chapter Railroad Association.

He is survived by two daughters, Dona Grove and Carol Ramsey, both of Chambersburg; two sons, Larry H. Nuckels of Chambersburg and Herbert D. Nuckels of Fayetteville, Pa.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Park Lawns Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the hospice of Chambersburg.

Arrangements are made by Cremation Society of Pennsylvania, 4100 Jonestown Road, Harrisburg, Pa.

Mervel M. Fulk III

BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Mervel Morrison Fulk III, 50, of Bunker Hill, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born July 12, 1946, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of Francis Lamp Fulk of Inwood, W.Va., and the late Mervel Morrison Fulk Jr.

He was a 1964 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

He retired as a Martinsburg city firefighter after 27 years of service. He was employed part-time by Barnhart's for 26 years.

He was a member of Martinsburg Firefighters Local 805; Professional Firefighters of West Virginia; International Association of Firefighters; Equality Lodge 44 AF&AM; Martinsburg Lodge of Perfection; Wheeling Consistory; Martinsburg Lodge 120 Loyal Order of Moose; and King Magic Ring International Brotherhood of Magicians.

He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was an avid golfer and bowler.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Betty Butts Fulk, at home; one daughter, Marci Thomas of Kearneysville, W.Va.; one sister, Elizabeth Ann Fellers of Kearneysville; and one grandson.

Services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. John E. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Bunker Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund, c/o Betty Forney, Route 1, Box 126, Bunker Hill, W.Va. 25413; or to the charity of one's choice.

Catherine V. Shoemaker

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Catherine Virginia Shoemaker, 79, of Roy Shafer Road, Middletown, and recently a resident of Vindabona Nursing Home, Braddock Heights, Md., died Friday, July 4, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born Nov. 3, 1917, in Middletown, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Effie Wiles Shafer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur R. Shoemaker, in 1982.

She was employed by Gates Variety Store, Middletown.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown.

She is survived by four daughters, Shirley Eyler of Walkersville, Md., Joan Lenhart of Braddock Heights, Mary Frymyer of Frederick and Peggy Diane Stine of Knoxville, Md.; three sons, Jack Shoemaker of Walkersville, John Joseph Shoemaker of Middletown and Robert Shoemaker of Woodsboro, Md.; three sisters, Mary Ziegler and Irene Eisentrout, both of Middletown and Louise Tyeryar of Frederick; three brothers, Albert Shafer, Glenn Shafer and Charles Shafer, all of Middletown; 12 grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Eigenbrode; one brother, Earl Shafer; and one grandson.

Graveside services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown. The Rev. William M. Bucher will officiate.

Friends may call Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown.

Ray G. Weaver

FAIRPLAY - Graveside services for Ray G. Weaver, 74, of Fairplay, who died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Manor Church of the Brethren Cemetery, 18511 Manor Church Road, Boonsboro. The Rev. E. Reese Davis will officiate.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard North, Hagerstown.

Daniel I.W. Hess Jr.

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. - Daniel I.W. Hess Jr., 54, of Route 1, Gerrardstown, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Feb. 3, 1943, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Daniel W. and Mary Louise Murphy Hess Sr.

He retired from Martinsburg Fire Department as captain on June 20, 1996, after 30 years of service. He joined the fire department in February 1966. He was promoted to lieutenant in December 1981 and to captain in June 1985.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964.

He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

He was appointed to West Virginia State Fire Commission in 1990 by Gov. Gaston Caperton. He was a member of the Professional Firefighters of West Virginia Advisory Board from 1987 to 1993, serving as chairman from 1989 to 1990, vice president from 1990 to 1991 and president from 1991 to 1993.

He was president of Martinsburg Firefighters Local 805 from 1982 to 1983 and from 1991 to 1995. He was a member of Martinsburg Firefighters Pension Board, serving as trustee from 1977 to 1988.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Martinsburg Lodge 120 and Vice President of Moose Golf League; Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW; Berkeley Post 14 American Legion; BPO Elks 778; FOP Eagles Post 4179; and AARP. He was a bowler in Upper Shenandoah Valley Bowling Association.

He is survived by his wife, Linda A. Lucas Hess, at home; two daughters, Karla D. Lightcap of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Kathryn D. Chadwick of Norman, Okla.; two sons, Kevin D. Hess of Martinsburg and Kellynn D. Hess at home; four sisters, Patricia A. DeHaven of Hedgesville, W.Va., Amelia L. Gano of Martinsburg, Linda L. Propst of Ranson, W.Va., and Christie L. Kave of Kearneysville, W.Va.; three brothers, Larry R. Hess of Tacoma, Wash., Ronald E. Hess of Martinsburg and Bruce W. Hess Sr. of Hedgesville; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one infant daughter; one son, Scott D. Hess; and one sister, Shelia M. Hess.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. John R. Yost will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

Military graveside services will be conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and Sunday.

Donald R. "Abe" Russell

Donald R. "Abe" Russell, 73, of 829 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 1, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late George Hudson and Madeline Bower Russell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen Weagley Russell, in 1981.

He was an engineer for Potomac Edison Co. and retired on Feb. 1, 1985, after 39 years.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he participated in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy during World War II.

He was a member of Church of the Brethren, Hagerstown.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose; American Legion, Funkstown Post 211; and Potomac Edison Forerunners Club. He was a 50-year member of BPOE 378.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by one sister, Caroline Russell Palkovitz of Hagerstown; one niece; and one nephew.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Rachel Black will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Elsie P. Close

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Elsie Pauline Close, 85, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born Sept. 5, 1911, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Victoria Elizabeth Barker Frock.

She attended Mount Cecil School, Morgan County. She earned her GED in her early 1960s and obtained her real estate license.

She was a homemaker. She previously served on the Berkeley Springs Town Council; operated Blessed Book Store, Berkeley Springs; was employed by Carlton Luttrell Realty, Martinsburg, W.Va.; and operated Close's Paint Store and Close's Grocery Store, both in Berkeley Springs.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs, for 57 years. She was a Sunday school teacher, member of the church choir, Ladies Aide and Missionary Societies and active in various youth groups.

She was a member of the Morgan County Republican Club.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Vernon Glenwood Close, at home; two daughters, Bonnie Close of Berkeley Springs and Dawn Massey of Williamsport; three sons, Leon Close of Martinsburg and Thomas A. Close and Timothy B. Close, both of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Virginia Bober of Berkeley Springs; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Virgie Dawson and Hazel Frock; and seven brothers, Ben Frock, Fred Frock, Dayton Frock, Dick Frock, Lewis Frock, Joe Frock and Jacob Frock.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 110 S. Green St., Berkeley Springs. Pastor Owen B. Womack will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The funeral home will be open today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 110 S. Green St., Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

Zelda M. Lowe

SHADY GROVE, Pa. - Zelda M. "Ted" Helman Lowe, 85, of 1933 Buchanan Trail East, Shady Grove, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at her home.

Born Oct. 11, 1911, in Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry S. and Sadie M. Overcash Helman.

She lived most of her life at her current residence.

She attended Shady Grove schools.

In 1990, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Lowe, whom she married in 1932.

In her early life, she was employed by Grove Grocery Store, Shady Grove. In her teens, she was employed as a folder by Waynesboro Knitting Mill, Waynesboro, Pa.

She was a member of Solomons Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grindstone Hill, Pa.

She was a member of South Chapter 2977 AARP, Waynesboro; National AARP; and Shady Grove Women's Club.

She is survived by two sons, Charles R. Lowe of Crownsville, Md., and Richard E. Lowe of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Janet Martin; and one brother, Roy Helman.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa. The Rev. Michael E. Allwein will officiate. Burial will be in Grindstone Hill Cemetery.

Family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
