January 16, 2000

Ruth B. Hellenschmidt of Trappe, died on Sunday, January 16, 2000 at her home. She was 75.

Born in Grant, Virginia on August 27, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Maude Cox Bonham. In 1940 she graduated from Oak Hill Academy in Grant, Virginia and then began a career with the Social Security Administration where she remained until her retirement in 1979. In 1966 she married Donald G. "Sam" Hellenschmidt and they made their home in Baltimore until moving to Easton in 1979 and then to Trappe in 1986. Mr. Hellenschmidt died in 1994.

She was a member of Rock Bridge Baptist Church, Grant, Virginia. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of E.E.Streets, V.F.W., Memorial Post #5118.

Mrs. Hellenschmidt is survived by two brothers, Ray Bonham of Galax, VA and Eugene Bonham of Chicago, IL.

Funeral services will be held at the Maryland Veteran Cemetery Chapel, Hurlock on Wednesday, January 19, 2000 at 11:00 AM.

Burial will be at the Maryland Veteran Cemetery, Hurlock, MD.

Funeral arrangements are by the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, MD.

Madeline G. Hart died Sunday January 16th. 2000 in the West Side Regional Hospital Center, in Plantation Fla. Of heart failure. She was 78.

Mrs. Hart was born in Waterbury, Conn. The daughter of the late Thomas W. and Iva Dickerson Griffin. She graduated from Snow Hill High school, Snow Hill, Md. in 1938. She moved to Baltimore, Md. until 1942 when she married George L. Hart of Sudlersville, Md. During WWII they made there home in Melburn, Fla. In 1946 they returned to Queen Anne’s Co. and made there home in Sudlersville, Md. Mrs. Hart worked as a teller for Sudlersville Bank and retired in 1977 as there head cashier. She was a member of the Calvary Asbury United Methodist Sudlersville, Md., a member of the Chester River Yacht & Country Club, a member of the American Legion Post 192, Ladies Auxiliary, Millington, Md. and the Elks Lodge in Easton, Md. Mrs. Hart enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, traveling and for many years singing in the choir at her church. She was preceded in death by her husband George L. Hart in 1991.

Mrs. Hart is survived by 2- daughters Beverly Ann Hart of Boulder CO. and Darlene and Tommy Pippin of Chestertown, Md with whom Mrs. Hart lived. 3- Grandchildren and 8- Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 21, 2000 at 1:00 at Calvery-Asbury United Methodist Church, Sudlersville, MD. Friends and relatives may call on Thursday, January 20, 2000 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown, MD.

Interment will be in the Sudlersville Cemetery, Sudlersville, MD.

In Lieu of Flowers: Contributions may be made in her memory to the Calvary-Asbury United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 202 Sudlersville, Md. 21668.

On January 16, 2000, Estella Mae Roe, of Chester, MD died at the Memorial Hospital in Easton MD. She was 85 years old. Born in Chester MD on January 28, 1914 the daughter of the late: Hiram Guessford and Helen Harris Lewis. She graduated from Stevensville High School Class of 1931 She married Granville K. Thompson of Chester MD. He was killed in an industrial accident on July31, 1935. Mrs. Roe married Albert Roe of Chester MD and he died on July 20, 1974. Mrs. Roe worked as a seamstress for many years at the Perfect Garment Co. in Grasonville MD. After retiring she worked for Lee Bell’s Store in Chester MD and later Flower Boutique in Stevensville MD. She was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church, The United Methodist Women, Rebecca Circle, and the Textile workers union, and the Chester Homemakers Club.

Her son Granville Adrian Thompson of Chester MD, one grandson Granville A. Thompson, Jr. of Easton, MD, survives Mrs. Roe. Three great grand children: Robert Granville Thompson of Chester MD, Cory Adrian Thompson and Dustin Keith Horney both of Easton Md.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chester MD. On Tuesday January 18, 2000 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday January 19, 2000 at 11 am. Interment in Stevensville Cemetery, Stevensville MD. The family request contributions be made to the Kent Island Volunteer Ambulance at P.O. Box #27, Stevensville MD 21666 or Kent Island United Methodist Church, P.O. Box#308 , Chester MD 21619.

January 14, 2000

William Spellman Bringman, Jr. of Oxford, died at the University Hospital, Baltimore on Friday, January 14, 2000. He was 64.

Born in Baltimore March 19, 1935, he was the son of the Myrtle Smith Bringman of Oxford and the late William S. Bringman, Sr. After graduating from Towson High School in 1955 he served with the Maryland National Guard. In 1957 he moved to Oxford where he worked as a local merchant with his parents in the operation of Tred Avon Confectionery.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Towson High School Alumni Association.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, is his sister, Mary F. Bringman of Wentworth, NH.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2000 at 2:00 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Private burial will be at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to the Oxford Volunteer Fire Company Ambulance Fund, Oxford, MD 21654.

Frederick "Mac" John McDonald of Chester, MD. died Friday, January 14th, 2000 at the Skyway Manor in Cape St. Claire, MD. He was 79.

Born on April 14, 1920 in Craddock, VA. He was the son of the llate Joseph Edward and Mary Elizabeth Classey McDonald. He attended Mt. Rainier High School in Mt. Rainier, MD. Mr. McDonald served in the United States Navy during World War II. He then married Charlotte Bauserman on February 23, 1957. They resided in Mount Rainier, where he was employed by the Food and Drug Administration until retirement. Mr. McDonald moved to the Eastern Shore in 1996.

Mr. Frederick "Mac" McDonald is survived by his wife, Charlotte Bauserman McDonald of Chester, a daughter, Lynne Doeler of Chester, three sons; Howard Ostmann of Chicago, IL, John McDonald of Front Royal, VA., Patrick McDonald of Queenstown, MD., and two sisters; Elizabeth Freed of Mayo, MD and Judy Bassett of Titus, FL. and four grandchildren

A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 24, 2000 at 11:00 AM at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Chester,MD. Friends and family may call on Sunday, January 23, 2000 between 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD. Interment is in Maryland Veterans Cemetery Eastern Shore near Hurlock, MD.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society Queen Anne’s County P.O. Box 132 Queenstown, MD. 21658.

January 12, 2000

Bertha Beasten Miller of Chestertown, Md. died on January 12, 2000 at her home. She was 84.

She was born in Locust Grove, Md. on July 12, 1915 the daughter of the late: S. Hill and Emma Rebecca Grantlin Beasten. Mrs. Miller was educated in the Kent County School System and raised her family. She owned and operated a bus contracting business, driving for Kent County Schools. She retired after 38 years. Mrs. Miller was a member of Kennedyville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed flower gardening.

She is survived by a brother Albert Beasten of Earleville, Md., 2 sisters: Elizabeth Miller of Kennedyville, Md. and Edna Ferguson of Newark, De.; 3 grandchildren: James R. Miller of Chestertown, Md., John R. Miller of Falls Church, Va., and Tracy Lynn Miller of Earleville, Md. along with 3 great grandchildren. A daughter the late Nancy Lou Porter and a son: the late Albert R. Miller both predeceased her.

Graveside Memorial services will be held on Saturday January 15, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at Shrewsbury Episcopal Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society P.O. Box 711 Chestertown, Md. 21620. Arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Chestertown, Md.

January 12, 2000

Marlin Saddler Clevenger of Grasonville, MD passed away on Wednesday, January 12, 2000 at Memorial Hospital in Easton. Born May 12, 1925 in Grasonville, he was the son of the late Frank & Leola Clevenger. He attended Grasonville Elementary School and Stevensville High School.

Mr. Clevenger entered the U.S. Navy in September 1943 and served in the Asiatic Pacific area during World War II. He participated in the invasions of the islands of Saipan, Tinian, Leyte, Luzon and Iwo Jima.

Following World War II, Mr. Clevenger was employed by the Maryland State Police in 1946. He worked most of his career with the State Police on the Eastern Shore and later as Barrack Commander at Forestville Barrack and then Annapolis Barrack. After 29 years of dedicated service, he retired from the State Police in October 1975 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. During his service with the State Police, Mr Clevenger received three commendations for outstanding police work and over 70 letters of recommendation from citizens.

Upon his retirement, Mr. Clevenger worked for W.E. Clevenger Realty and later with Rosendale Realty. In August 1988 he accepted a position with Clark Broadcasting Company in Easton as a Big Band Disc Jockey with WCEI radio in Easton. He was affectionately named "Darlin Marlin" by his fans.

Mr. Clevenger distinguished himself as an active citizen over the years, participating in many civic organizations such as the Queenstown Lions Club, Eastern Shore Police Association, Kent Island Little League, Queen Anne’s County Parks and Recreation Board, Winchester Lodge Knights of Pythias and Queenstown Moose Lodge. He was a member and past commander of the VFW Post 7464. Mr. Clevenger was an active member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Grasonville where he served as chairperson of the Pastor/Parish Relations Committee and also as Lay Leader.

Mr. Clevenger is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Louise Middleton Clevenger, two daughters, Sharon Cropper of Ridgely, Vicki Lynn Perry of Queenstown and one son, Richard Clevenger of Centreville. He is also survived by two grandaughters, Tiffany Parry of Queenstown and Amanda Clevenger of Centreville. Mr Clevenger is also survived by one sister Freida L. Thomas of Grasonville. Mr. Clevenger was predeceased by two brothers, William (Bill) Clevenger (1983) and Winfred (Bud) Clevenger (1998) and two sisters Dorothy Clough (1998) and Shirley O’Donnell (1999).

Services will be held at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Centreville, Maryland on Saturday, January 15, 2000 at 11 AM. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Easton. Friends may call on Friday, January 14 from 7 to 9 PM at the Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Richard Thomas, Conaway O’Donnell, Walter Clough, Jr., Frankie Clevenger, George Middleton and Richard Middleton. Honorary pallbearers are Charles Kirkpatrick, Emil Myers, Bill Eckstorm, Elmer Parkerson and Robert Middleton.

In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to : American Lung Association, 209 East Market Street, Salisbury, MD 21801 or Immanuel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 518 Grasonville, MD 21638

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Centreville, MD on Friday, January 14, 2000 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. Funeral services from the funeral home on Saturday, January 15, 2000 at 11:00 AM. Interment in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton, MD.

Edna Davis Hepbron of Rock Hall, Md. died on January 12, 2000 at Magnolia Hall Nursing Home. She was 95. She was born in Rock Hall, Md. on September 15, 1904 the daughter of the late Lawrence O. and Blanche Carter Davis. She was the wife of the late Percy M. Hepbron, former Maryland State Senator.

Mrs. Hepbron attended Kent County Public Schools and on August 31, 1921 she married Percy Maxwell Hepbron. They made their home in Rock Hall, Md. were Mrs. Hepbron was a homemaker. She also farmed and raised poultry with her husband as well as helping him in his political endeavors as he served as a Kent County Commissioner and later as Maryland State Senator for 21 years. Her husband predeceased her on October 5, 1992.

Mrs. Hepbron was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Women’s Democrat Club, Rock Hall Homemakers and the Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital Auxiliary. She also enjoyed crocheting.

She is survived by a son: Bernard T. Hepbron of Rock Hall, Md.; a sister: Ethel Groves of Rock Hall, Md.; a granddaughter: Laura Lee Paschall of Baltimore, Md.; 4 step grandchildren: Anna Rowson of Haynesville, La., Walter Ray Harrison of Chestertown, Md., Bobby Joe Harrison of Springhill, La., Gary Wayne Harrison of Chestertown, Md., and James E. Harrison of Shreveport, La. One daughter the late Laura Lee Paschall predeceased her in 1989 and a grandson the late Bernard T. Hepbron died in 1977.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday January 15, 2000 at 1:00 P.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home Route 20 Rock Hall, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Saturday one-hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery Rock Hall; Md. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Rock Hall Vol. Fire Dept. Building Fund P.O. Box 577 Rock Hall, Md. 21661.

Robert Adrian Meachem of Stevensville, MD died at the Anne Arundel Medical Center on Thursday, January 12, 2000. He was 50.

Born on March 24, 1949, He was the son of Robert E. Meachem and the late Lucienne Pierrard Meachem. He graduated from Severna Park High School in 1967. He then began working for Anne Arundel County Public Works as a land surveyor. Mr. Meachem married Wanda Callahan in 1970, residing in Annapolis, MD. He later moved to the Eastern Shore where he was employed as a bartender for various restaurants in the Annapolis and Crofton areas. Mr. Meachem then became a self-employed painter, working for various sub-contractors. He was a member of the N.R.A. Mr. Meachem enjoyed fishing, cooking, animals and was an avid sports fan.

Mr. Robert Meachem is survived by one son, Bryan Adrian Meachem of Millersville, MD; one sister, Gloria A. Meachem of Stevensville, MD. and his father, Robert E. Meachem of Crofton, MD.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2000 at 11:00 AM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chester, MD.

Erma Elizabeth Benton of Centreville, MD, formerly of Stevensville, MD. died at her home on January 11, 2000. She was 75.

Born on April 3, 1924 in Preston, MD, she was the daughter of the late Roland and Cleo Marshall Black. She was a graduate of St. Michael’s High School in St. Michael’s, MD. She married Curtis Edgar Benton on April 2, 1942. They moved to Stevensville, MD where Mrs. Benton worked for Acme Supermarket as a clerk in Stevensville, MD. until later becoming a homemaker. Her husband predeceased her in 1996. She was a member of Kent Island United Methodist Church and past president of the Ladies Auxilliary of the Kent Island Yacht Club.

Mrs. Benton is survived by a son, Curtis Edgar Benton Jr. of Centreville, MD; a daughter, Tina Houston of Stevensville, MD. a brother, William Black of Chester, MD. and two sisters, Linda Towers of Preston, MD and Shirley Seward of Grasonville, MD. Mrs. Benton also had five grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son Barry L. Benton in 1999, a brother Alan Black and two sisters, Jane Black and Patra Pulley

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2000 at the Kent Island United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of Queen Anne’s County, 300 Del Rhodes Avenue Queenstown, MD. 21658. Services provided by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chester, MD.
