Russell L. Hovermale

WINTHROP, Mass. - Russell L. Hovermale, 57, of Winthrop, and formerly of Big Springs, who died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, also is survived by a sister, Retha J. Shank of Clear Spring.

Charles R. Mercer Sr.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Charles Richard "Dick" Mercer Sr., 63, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 15, 1933, in Jefferson, Frederick County, Md., he was the son of the late Woodrow Wilson Mercer and Mary Frances Unglesbee Baker.

He retired from Peoples Supply Co. and Valley Hardware Co., Charles Town. He was previously employed by The Martinsburg Journal, Charles Town.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during the Korean War as a medical corpsman. He received the National Defense Service medal and the Navy Good Conduct medal.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Ranson, W.Va.

He was a member of Jackson-Perks American Legion Post 71, Charles Town.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Pauline M. Fogle Mercer, at home; one daughter, Vicky Spurlock of Ranson; four sons, Donald Mercer of Lynchburg, Va., James Mercer of Kearneysville, W.Va., David Mercer Sr. of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Charles Mercer Jr. of Port Allegany, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services will be today at 10 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town. Pastor Mike Witham will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Jefferson, Md.

Friends were received Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Phyllis E. Clark

Phyllis E. Clark, 62, of 17802 Broadfording Road, Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at the home of her daughter, Candy S. Stouffer.

Born Feb. 20, 1935, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Charles Frederick and Lillie Mae Fish Lum.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Robert Clark, in 1986.

She retired from Interstate Books in 1995. She was previously employed by Holly Music.

She was a member of Christ Fellowship Assembly of God.

She was a member of AARP.

She was an avid bingo player.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by two sons, Donald L. Lushbaugh of Baltimore, Ohio, and Dennis W. Lushbaugh of Jacksonville, N.C.; five sisters, Vivian V. Grove, Irene E. Wentz, Levena M. Henson, Betty L. Jones and Peggy A. Green, all of Hagerstown; and six grandsons.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Clara M. Bonney, Ethel Lum, Mary M. Reese and Dorris J. Massey; and three brothers, William K. Lum, Charles F. Lum Jr. and Samuel E. Lum.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard Godfrey will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Paul H. Slifer

ROHRERSVILLE - Services for Paul Harold Slifer, 66, of 20326 Locust Grove Road, Rohrersville, who died Thursday, July 3, 1997, will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.

The Rev. Carolyn Boyce will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

He retired in 1989 from Maryland Correctional Institution, Hagerstown, after 33 years of service.

Mary P. Carter

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Mary Pearl Carter, 90, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, July 4, 1997, at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs.

Born June 1, 1907, in Artemas, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Thomas W. and Mary Blanche Lashley.

In 1924 she attended Shippensburg State Teachers College, Shippensburg, Pa. After the death of her first husband in the late 1940s, she moved to Cumberland, Md., where she worked as a seamstress in a department store. In the late 1940s, she moved to Hamilton, where she managed a dry cleaning store. She met and married her second husband, George Carter, while living in Hamilton. She moved to Berkeley Springs in 1993.

She was a member of Pearson United Methodist Church, Hamilton, N.J.

She is survived by two granddaughters, Mary Elizabeth Weatherholt and Anna Lee Garlitz, both of Cumberland; six grandsons, Robert F. Tritapoe of Middletown, Md., Brandon Guy Akers of Myersville, Md., Lyndon Scott Akers of Danville, Va., Sheldon Todd Akers of Berkeley Springs, Keith Akers of Warren, Maine, and Hetzel Akers Jr. of California; 14 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Brandon Ralph Akers in 1937; her second husband, George Carter in 1984; two sons, Brandon Ralph Akers Jr. and Hetzel Akers, both in 1988; one sister, Marie Imes; two brothers, Kelly S. Lashley and Stuart D. Lashley; and one granddaughter.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Kingston and Kemp Funeral Home, 260 White Horse Ave., Hamilton. The Rev. Roderick B. Mills will officiate. Burial will be in Morrisville Cemetery, Morrisville, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Local arrangements are being made by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs.

E. Jeanette Pannuty

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - E. Jeanette Pannuty, 69, of Route 4, Falling Waters, died Friday, July 4, 1997, at the home of her daughter under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born Oct. 15, 1927, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Roy Lee and Virgie M. Braithwaite Bowers.

She was a member of Marlowe Assembly of God Church.

She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Pannuty, at home; one daughter, Linda Hoffmaster of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one son, Charles E. Pannuty Jr. of Falling Waters; one sister, Naomi Seeders of Martinsburg; two brothers, John Bowers of Pico Rivera, Calif., and Lewis Bowers of Anaheim, Calif.; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews including a niece, Cindy Hawkins of Pittsburgh, Pa., whom she reared.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Bowers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Marlowe Assembly of God Church. The Rev. James Haskiell will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

John V. Jamison III

John Vincent Jamison III, 86, of 12846 Fountain Head Road, Hagerstown and Wauwinet, Nantucket Island, Mass., died Saturday, July 5, 1997, after a long illness.

Jamison, a lifelong resident of Hagerstown, was a leading manufacturer who was active in business, civic and charitable affairs in Washington County and Maryland.

He was born in Hagerstown on March 21, 1911, and was the son of the late John V. Jamison and Anna Elder Alvey Jamison. He was the grandson of Judge Richard Henry Alvey.

He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1929, where he was a member of the Black Horse Troop. He graduated from Yale University in 1933, where he was captain of the freshman water polo team and varsity polo team his senior year.

He worked at Jamison Cold Storage Door Co. (later Jamison Door Co.), working up from laborer to secretary-treasurer, president and general manager, chairman of the board and chief executive officer. He retired as CEO in 1989 but remained active on the board until 1993.

A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Maryland National Guard as aide to William Preston Lane, later governor. He transferred to the U.S. Navy in 1944 and was at sea in the Western Pacific as radar officer aboard the USS Wichita.

He was charter president of the Hagerstown Junior Chamber of Commerce, and later president of the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce and Hagerstown Manufacturers Bureau. He was president of Hagerstown Bookbinding and Printing Co., treasurer of The Herald-Mail Publishing Co. and Associated Industries of Maryland.

He was director of National Association of Manufacturers, an advisory board member of Maryland National Bank and Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. (Maryland) and associate member of the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers. He was active in the Rotary Club.

He served as president of the Board of Trustees of Washington County Hospital, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts and the Board of Visitors of Maryland School for the Deaf.

He was active in conservation affairs on Nantucket Island, serving as president of the Wauwinet Landowners Association and as a member of the Trustees of Reservations of the State of Massachusetts.

He helped establish the Maryland Symphony Orchestra in Hagerstown, serving several years on the board of directors.

He was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church, serving as vestry man, lay reader and chalicer.

He was a member of Fountain Head Country Club and Wauwinet Yacht Club on Nantucket Island, where he served several years as commodore. He was longtime president of the Assembly Club of Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha Page Wroth Jamison; three daughters, Patty Martineau of Canton, Ga., Wye Jamison Allanbrook of Berkeley, Calif., and Stephanie Jamison Watkins of Cambridge, Mass.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother Richard A. Jamison.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St. The Rev. Charles R. McGinley will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Peregrine Wroth Memorial Library, Washington County Hospital, 251 Antietam St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or to St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Helen R. Everwine

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Helen R. Everwine, 87, of West Palm Beach, and formerly of Waynesboro, died Saturday, July 5, 1997, in West Palm Beach.

Born Jan. 28, 1910, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry Jacob and Ida Mae Bonebrake Kauffman.

She graduated from Waynesboro High School in Waynesboro, Pa.

She was employed by Waynesboro Knitting Mill prior to her marriage.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She was active in the Moose and Elks clubs.

She is survived by her husband, Roy Everwine, whom she married June 16, 1932; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, three brothers and five sisters.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Northwood Funeral Home, 5608 Broadway, West Palm Beach.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Virginia M. Bryan

Virginia May "Ginny" Bryan, 82, of 32 Fairground Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 24, 1914, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Reese and Audrey Blose Dean.

She was employed with the U.S. Navy Department from 1941 to 1945.

She is survived by her husband, George Franklin Bryan, whom she married Dec. 27, 1965; one son, Eddie L. Hammers of Palmyra, Va.; two sisters, Lillian Brooks of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Alpha Jean Tinsley of Staunton, Va.; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Christopher J. Chantelau will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mabel G. Renner

Mabel G. Renner, 86, of 11 S. Walnut St., Hagerstown, died Friday, July 4, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 30, 1911, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Vachel W. and Susan Gossard Randell.

Her husband, Walter R. Renner, died in 1976.

She worked in Central Supply at Washington County Hospital, retiring in 1976.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, corner of High and West Washington streets, Hagerstown.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by nine sisters and brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. C. Edward Blackmon will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be at the funeral home today from noon to 5 p.m. and 30 minutes prior to the service on Tuesday.
