John G. Bowers

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - John G. Bowers, 44, of 286 Baumgardner Drive, died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital in Waynesboro, Pa., from injuries received when he was struck by a van at the intersection of U.S. 11 and Walters Avenue in Greencastle.

Born Nov. 7, 1952, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of John K. and Ethel E. Whited Bowers of Greencastle.

He was a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Md., and attended Montgomery College in Rockville, Md.

He was employed by Giant Foods of Chambersburg, Pa.

He was a member of Chambersburg YMCA. He enjoyed boxing and running and ran in the Marine Marathon Run. He also enjoyed mountain hiking and bike riding.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Wanda Strother of Stafford, Va., Nancy Kramp of Calverton, Va., and Joan Hurson of Bethesda, Md.; one brother, Roger C. Bowers of Terrytown, La.; six nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. George K. Bowers will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Charles J. Kelley Sr.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Charles J. Kelley Sr., 78, of 9578 Blue Spring Road, died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at his home.

Born March 23, 1919, in Silver Spring, Md., he was the son of the late Aloyisus and Ada B. Cleves Kelley.

He was a brick mason, and a home builder and developer in Maryland and Pennsylvania. In his earlier years, he was a farmer.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in Germany and Burma.

He was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church in Greencastle, Pa.

He also was a member of the Mercersburg Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Tania Sarapuka Kelley, whom he married Aug. 28, 1947; one daughter, Maryann Parish of Asheville, N.C.; four sons, Charles J. Kelley Jr. of Middletown, Md., Michael P. Kelley of Greencastle, Mark J. Kelley of Hagerstown and Joe B. Kelley of Jefferson, Md.; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 385 S. Ridge Ave., Greencastle. The Rev. Joseph L. Stahura will officiate. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Catholic Church Cemetery in Chambersburg.

A viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made in his memory to St. Mark's Catholic Church, 385 S. Ridge Ave., P.O. Box 218, Greencastle, Pa.

Arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home in Greencastle.

Mary L. Richardson

SCOTLAND, Pa. - Mary Lou Richardson, 59, of 3920 Main St., and formerly of Altoona, Pa., died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at her home.

Born Sept. 26, 1937, in Altoona, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Colletta Burke O'Toole.

She retired from Corpus Christi School cafeteria in Chambersburg, Pa., where she was a cook. She was formerly employed by Montgomery Ward in Chambersburg and Ward Trucking in Altoona.

She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg, where she also was a member of Columbian Ladies and Legion of Mary in Chambersburg. She was a former member and organist of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Altoona.

She was a former Avon representative and a member of Altoona School of Commerce Sorority and Ladies of the Moose Lodge 842 in Chambersburg. She volunteered in the community of Scotland.

She is survived by her husband, James W. Richardson, whom she married June 22, 1957; three daughters, Mary Pat Kauffman of Chambersburg, Marjorie A. Ostroff of York, Pa., and Michelle M. Dale of Shippensburg, Pa.; one son, James W. Richardson Jr. of Chambersburg; one sister, Donna Lestochi of Allentown, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, with the Rev. Daniel F. Lawler, S.J., as celebrant. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery in Chambersburg.

A viewing will be at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, today from 7 to 9 p.m., where the Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, c/o Mary Lou Richardson, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Kevin L. Bumbaugh

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Kevin L. Bumbaugh, 28, of 143 Fairview Ave., died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born Dec. 27, 1968, in Waynesboro, he was the son of Sharion L. Sharrah Adams of Waynesboro, and the late John William "Bill" Fridinger Jr. He also was preceded in death by his adoptive father, Robert E. Bumbaugh.

He was a 1987 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School. He then studied air conditioning at Hagerstown Junior College in Hagerstown.

He was employed in Civil Service of the U.S. government, first at Fort Ritchie in Cascade in air conditioning, and then at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md.

He was a member of Eyler Valley Chapel in Sabillasville, Md.

He also was a member of Order of Owls Nest 1073 in Waynesboro.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Laura D. Mehaffey Bumbaugh, whom he married Oct. 10, 1992; one daughter, Emily G. Bumbaugh, at home; two sisters, Billie Jo Burtman of McConnellsburg, Pa., and Allyson M. Fridinger of Waynesboro; one brother, Sean W. Fridinger of Waynesboro; stepfather, Carl L. Adams of Waynesboro; stepmother, Jennifer K. Fridinger of Waynesboro; one stepsister, Jennifer Propst of Fayetteville, Pa.; maternal grandparents, Merle E. and Whilma P. Sharrah of Waynesboro; and paternal grandmother, Zelma L. Fridinger of Waynesboro.

Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Jeff Walter, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery in Cascade.

There will be no viewing; however the family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of American, Central Pennsylvania Chapter, 298 S. Progress Ave., Harrisburg, Pa. 17109.

Thomas E. Bakner Jr.

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Thomas E. "Tommy" Bakner, 18, of 127 Walnut St., Mont Alto, died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Death was attributed to injuries he received in an automobile accident in Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pa.

Born Oct. 14, 1978, in Waynesboro, he was the son of Thomas E. and Louise E. Bowders Bakner of Mont Alto.

He lived most of his life in the Waynesboro area, moving to Mont Alto in Oct. 1996.

He attended Waynesboro schools.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by five sisters, Wendy S. Bakner, Lisa A. Kline and Teresa J. Ray, all of Waynesboro, Tammy D. Ray of Mt. Airy, Md., and Sherry D. Hill of Fairfield, Pa.; two brothers, Brian K. Snyder of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Todd E. Bakner of Mont Alto; maternal grandparents, William M. and Elizabeth L. Bowders of Waynesboro; paternal grandfather, Eugene F. Bakner; one niece; five nephews; and aunts and uncles.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Dwan N. Newsome will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harold L. Mason

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Retired Army Lt. Col. Harold L. Mason, 69, of Alexandria, died Monday, June 30, 1997, at Mt. Vernon Hospital, Fairfax County, Va.

Born in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William and Sarah Mason.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Quartermasters Corps, he served in Europe and Vietnam. He retired in 1971 after more than 20 years of service.

He was employed by the U.S. government, retiring in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Rita E. Mason; three daughters, Annette Mason of Miami Beach, Fla., Carol Mason Shivetts of Port Angeles, Wash., and Shirley Scarbrough of Springfield, Va.; two sons, Lt. Col. Raymond Mason of Fayetteville, N.C., and Henry Mason of Alexandria; one sister, Hazel Avey of Hagerstown; two brothers, Lester Mason of Sharpsburg and Kenneth Mason of Hagerstown; and four grandchildren.

Services will be today at 1 p.m. at Fort Myer Chapel, Fort Myer, Va. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Arrangements are by Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria.

Mae H. Seylar

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Mae H. Seylar, 87, a resident of Kim Ballard Personal Care Home, 4415 Lemar Road, died Monday, July 7, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born May 14, 1910, in Edenville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Martin H. and Abigail Martin Hoover.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory F. "Pete" Seylar, in 1975.

She was a homemaker.

She was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Williamson, Pa.

She is survived by one son, Ronald L. Seylar of Dry Run, Pa.; one sister, Ruth Snider of Chambersburg; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Roy E. Brake Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

A viewing will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the services Thursday.

Emmer D. Mellott

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Emmer DeShong Mellott, 90, RD 1, died Monday, July 7, 1997, at the Extended Care Unit, Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born May 19, 1907, in Licking Creek Township, Fulton County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Martha Mellott DeShong.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Walter Mellott, in 1993.

She was employed by Decker's Nursing Home in McConnellsburg for nine years in the 1960s. She also was a homemaker.

She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren, Needmore.

She is survived by one daughter, Hazel Sipes of Needmore; two sons, Charles W. "Bill" Mellott of McConnellsburg and Robert N. Mellott of Needmore; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one grandson.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Pa. The Rev. Roger Truax, the Rev. William Swope and the Rev. Belvy White will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Jay L. Clark

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Jay L. Clark, 67, of West Chester, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at his home.

Born in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Jay Lyday Clark and Grace Elizabeth Myers Clark.

He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Delaware and his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota. He continued his professional career at the University of Richmond and American Institute for Research, Pittsburgh.

He was a human factors psychologist for Burroughs Corp. and director of Job Corps, Omaha, Neb., and Excelsior Springs, Mo.

He returned to academia at Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa., in 1965. In 1966, he was hired by West Chester University to start its Psychology Department and be its first chairman. He retired as a full professor in 1990.

He is survived by a daughter, Laura Clayton of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, Jay Bradford Clark of Baltimore and C. Brooks Clark of West Chester; three sisters, Genevieve Bussard of Maugansville, Jeanne Quinn of Powell, Wyo., and Phyllis Grimm of Sharpsburg; three grandchildren; and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gregory Jay Clark; and one niece.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are made by Cremation Society of America.

Memorial contributions may be made to West Chester University, The Library Fund, c/o Smith House, West Chester University, West Chester, Pa. 19383.

John Stambaugh

DALTON, Ga. - John Stambaugh, 60, of 4771 Mitchell Farm Road, Dalton, died Sunday, July 6, 1997, at his home.

Born Oct. 5, 1936, in Washington, Ind., he was the son of the late John W. and Ruth Stambaugh.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was owner of Gunrunners of Dalton.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Roberts Stambaugh; four daughters, Rebecca Witt of Centre, Ala., and Cheryl Boyle, Audra Malagutti and Kathy Stanley, all of Dalton; one son, John W. Stambaugh III of Dalton; one sister, Ruth Rauch of Gladewater, Texas; one brother, Robert Lee Stambaugh of Williamsport; five grandchildren; and nephews.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home, 2801 Cleveland Road, Dalton. The Rev. Glenn Cavin will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Egleston Children's Hospital, 1365 Clifton Road, Atlanta, Ga. 30322; or Father Flanagan's Boys Home, Boys Town, NE 68010.
