Bob L. Simpson

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Bob Lee Simpson, 41, of Route 1, Harpers Ferry, died Monday, July 7, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Dec. 19, 1955, in Leesburg, Va., he was the son of Betty S. O'Brien of Frederick, Md.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Wilbur and Mabel Simpson of Harpers Ferry; two aunts, Georgia Simpson of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Diana Simpson of Inwood, W.Va.; three uncles, Stuart L. Simpson of Martinsburg, Ronald E. Simpson of Harpers Ferry and James L. Simpson of Inwood; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, 970 Washington St., Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Corky Depfer will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joseph F. Elgin

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Joseph F. Elgin, 77, of Twinbrooks Nursing Home, died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born May 16, 1920, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William Fisk and Mary Catherine Cline.

He was a 1937 graduate of Hagerstown High School, and attended the University of Maryland from 1938 to 1940. From 1940 to 1942 he attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

He was employed as an insurance adjuster for State Auto Insurance Co.

He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Hagerstown.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Elgin of Naperville, Ill., and Susan Cheryl Gipe of Mooresville, N.J.; two sons, Thomas M. Elgin of Louisville, and Joseph Douglas Elgin of St. Louis, Mo.; one brother, William E. Elgin; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Otterbein United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Bessie V. Price

RANSON, W.Va. - Bessie Virginia Price, 80, of Ranson, died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson.

Born July 3, 1917, in Cedar Grade, Va., she was a daughter of the late Casper Wayman and Lillie Mae Hodson Knighting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Lee Price, on Sept. 2, 1978.

She was a homemaker.

She was of the Episcopal faith.

She was a charter member of Women of the Moose Chapter 1028, Charles Town, W.Va.; Potomac Edison's Forerunners Club; a former member of Citizens Fire Co.; and Ladies Auxiliary, Charles Town.

She is survived by three daughters, Michael Propst of Kearneysville, W.Va., Sharon Wiebrecht of Hagerstown and Geraldine Feliciano of Inwood; one sister, Janet Shields of Florence, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Lloyd in 1990; two sisters, Dolly Painter and Elsie Magaha; and one brother, Manuel Knighting.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Charles Town. The Rev. James Peyton will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

Friends will be received Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria, Va. 22314; or to The Old Charles Town Library, 200 E. Washington St., Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Clifford A. Fox

FREDERICK, Md. - Clifford Alonzo "Skipper" Fox, 83, of Wyngate Drive, Frederick, formerly of Sabillasville, Md., died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born May 2, 1914, in Washington County, Md., he was the son of the late Charles R. and Flora Brown Fox.

He is survived by one sister, Hilda M. Sanders of Waynesboro, Pa.; one brother, Joseph Fox of Thurmont, Md.; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont. The Rev. David E. Denham will officiate. Burial will be in Germantown Bethel Church of God Cemetery, Cascade, Md.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Living Inc., 620-B Research Drive, Frederick, Md. 21703.

Elizabeth M.C. Miller

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Elizabeth M. Chapman Miller, 81, of Cumberland, died Monday, July 7, 1997, at Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit in Cumberland.

Born March 25, 1916, in Shaft, Md., she was the daughter of the late Catherine Trapp Chapman.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Suzanne M. Hilton of Cumberland; four sons, John F. Miller of Cumberland, Thomas E. Miller of Boonsboro, Michael J. Miller of Frostburg, Md., and Paul M. Miller of Fayetteville, N.C.; one brother, Warren F. Chapman of Cumberland; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merlyn F. Miller; five sisters, Florance Morrisey, Margaret Fisher, Leola Miller, Josephaine Yarnell and Bernadette Chorpenning; and three brothers, William Chapman, John Chapman and George Chapman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland. A Christian wake will be conducted Thursday at 8 p.m.

Thomas E. Bakner Jr.

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Thomas E. "Tommy" Bakner, 18, of 127 Walnut St., Mont Alto, died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Death was attributed to injuries he received in an automobile accident in Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pa.

Born Oct. 14, 1978, in Waynesboro, he was the son of Thomas E. and Louise E. Bowders Bakner of Mont Alto.

He lived most of his life in the Waynesboro area, moving to Mont Alto in Oct. 1996.

He attended Waynesboro schools.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by five sisters, Wendy S. Bakner, Lisa A. Kline and Teresa J. Ray, all of Waynesboro, Tammy D. Ray of Mt. Airy, Md., and Sherry D. Hill of Fairfield, Pa.; two brothers, Brian K. Snyder of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Todd E. Bakner of Mont Alto; maternal grandparents, William M. and Elizabeth L. Bowders of Waynesboro; paternal grandfather, Eugene F. Bakner; one niece; five nephews; and aunts and uncles.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Dwan N. Newsome will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harold L. Mason

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Retired Army Lt. Col. Harold L. Mason, 69, of Alexandria, died Monday, June 30, 1997, at Mt. Vernon Hospital, Fairfax County, Va.

Born in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William and Sarah Mason.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Quartermasters Corps, he served in Europe and Vietnam. He retired in 1971 after more than 20 years of service.

He was employed by the U.S. government, retiring in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Rita E. Mason; three daughters, Annette Mason of Miami Beach, Fla., Carol Mason Shivetts of Port Angeles, Wash., and Shirley Scarbrough of Springfield, Va.; two sons, Lt. Col. Raymond Mason of Fayetteville, N.C., and Henry Mason of Alexandria; one sister, Hazel Avey of Hagerstown; two brothers, Lester Mason of Sharpsburg and Kenneth Mason of Hagerstown; and four grandchildren.

Services will be today at 1 p.m. at Fort Myer Chapel, Fort Myer, Va. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Arrangements are by Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria.

Mae H. Seylar

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Mae H. Seylar, 87, a resident of Kim Ballard Personal Care Home, 4415 Lemar Road, died Monday, July 7, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born May 14, 1910, in Edenville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Martin H. and Abigail Martin Hoover.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory F. "Pete" Seylar, in 1975.

She was a homemaker.

She was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Williamson, Pa.

She is survived by one son, Ronald L. Seylar of Dry Run, Pa.; one sister, Ruth Snider of Chambersburg; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Roy E. Brake Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

A viewing will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the services Thursday.

Emmer D. Mellott

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Emmer DeShong Mellott, 90, RD 1, died Monday, July 7, 1997, at the Extended Care Unit, Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born May 19, 1907, in Licking Creek Township, Fulton County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Martha Mellott DeShong.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Walter Mellott, in 1993.

She was employed by Decker's Nursing Home in McConnellsburg for nine years in the 1960s. She also was a homemaker.

She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren, Needmore.

She is survived by one daughter, Hazel Sipes of Needmore; two sons, Charles W. "Bill" Mellott of McConnellsburg and Robert N. Mellott of Needmore; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one grandson.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Pa. The Rev. Roger Truax, the Rev. William Swope and the Rev. Belvy White will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Jay L. Clark

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Jay L. Clark, 67, of West Chester, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at his home.

Born in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Jay Lyday Clark and Grace Elizabeth Myers Clark.

He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Delaware and his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota. He continued his professional career at the University of Richmond and American Institute for Research, Pittsburgh.

He was a human factors psychologist for Burroughs Corp. and director of Job Corps, Omaha, Neb., and Excelsior Springs, Mo.

He returned to academia at Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa., in 1965. In 1966, he was hired by West Chester University to start its Psychology Department and be its first chairman. He retired as a full professor in 1990.

He is survived by a daughter, Laura Clayton of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, Jay Bradford Clark of Baltimore and C. Brooks Clark of West Chester; three sisters, Genevieve Bussard of Maugansville, Jeanne Quinn of Powell, Wyo., and Phyllis Grimm of Sharpsburg; three grandchildren; and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gregory Jay Clark; and one niece.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are made by Cremation Society of America.

Memorial contributions may be made to West Chester University, The Library Fund, c/o Smith House, West Chester University, West Chester, Pa. 19383.

John Stambaugh

DALTON, Ga. - John Stambaugh, 60, of 4771 Mitchell Farm Road, Dalton, died Sunday, July 6, 1997, at his home.

Born Oct. 5, 1936, in Washington, Ind., he was the son of the late John W. and Ruth Stambaugh.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was owner of Gunrunners of Dalton.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Roberts Stambaugh; four daughters, Rebecca Witt of Centre, Ala., and Cheryl Boyle, Audra Malagutti and Kathy Stanley, all of Dalton; one son, John W. Stambaugh III of Dalton; one sister, Ruth Rauch of Gladewater, Texas; one brother, Robert Lee Stambaugh of Williamsport; five grandchildren; and nephews.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home, 2801 Cleveland Road, Dalton. The Rev. Glenn Cavin will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Egleston Children's Hospital, 1365 Clifton Road, Atlanta, Ga. 30322; or Father Flanagan's Boys Home, Boys Town, NE 68010.
