Jean E. Stout
MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Jean Elizabeth Stout, 80, of 103 S. Church St., Middletown, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born March 31, 1917, in Sault St. Marie, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Chester W. and Myrtle McKerroll Swart.
She graduated from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich., with a degree in English.
She was a retired librarian with Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore. She previously was a secondary school teacher.
She was a member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Middletown.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan S. Burket of Middletown; one son, Robert J. Stout of Edgewater, Md.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Myrtle Marriott; and one brother, Jack Swart.
Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 1011 E. Patrick St., Frederick, Md. 21701.

Grace C. Huston
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Grace C. Huston, 92, of Menno Haven Nursing Home, 2075 Scotland Ave., and formerly of Cropsey, Ill., died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born March 12, 1905, in Cropsey, she was the daughter of the late Forest A. and Lena Traylor Smith.
Her husband, Arthur E. Huston, died in 1979.
She graduated from Orlando High School in Orlando, Fla., and from Normal Teachers School in Normal, Ill.
Prior to her marriage, she taught at the Knauer School, north of Cropsey. She then was a homemaker.
She was a member of Cropsey United Methodist Church in Cropsey, and taught Sunday school for many years.
She formerly served on the Cropsey School Board in Cropsey, and was a member of the Eastern Star of Colfax, Ill., and in Fairbury, Ill. She was a past worthy matron.
She is survived by two daughters, Beryl Wagner of Scotland, Pa., and Jean Leonard of Payson, Ariz.; one sister, Lucille Wilson of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Cropsey United Methodist Church in Cropsey. The Rev. Linda Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Fred R. Furry
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Fred R. Furry, 67, of 175 Cameo Drive, Fayetteville, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at his home.
Born Sept. 1, 1929, in Scotland, Pa., he was a son of the late Edward Furry and Bessie Gontz Furry.
He retired in 1991. He previously was employed by Scotland School for Veterans Children as a security officer; Shoap's Burial Vault Co.; and Shipp Burial Vault Co.
He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, Chambersburg, Pa. He served on the Church Administration Board, was co-teacher in the Sunday school and was a member of King's Sons and Daughters Sunday School Class.
He was a life member of Fayetteville Fire Co. He stocked fish for Falling Spring Fish Nursery.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Grace Heckman Furry, whom he married May 23, 1953; two sons, Jim T. Furry of Chambersburg and John E. Furry of Fayetteville; one sister, Helen Wenger of Scotland; two brothers, Jack W. Furry of Fayetteville and Joe A. Furry of Chambersburg; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, 2509 Black Gap Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Daryl M. Elliott will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Chambersburg.

A. Betty L. Fischer
CRYSTAL SPRING, Pa. - A. Betty Lou Fischer, 50, of HC 1, Crystal Spring, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at her home.
Born Sept. 30, 1946, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Veryl and Adrian DeShong Spade of Needmore, Pa.
She was employed for 23 years as clerk to the U.S. Postal Service, Crystal Spring. She has been a licensed practical nurse since 1966.
She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
She was a member of Gold Wing Road Riders Association Chapter C, Chambersburg.
She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority in 1972. In 1982, she and seven of her sorority sisters progressed to the Exemplar Degree, forming the chapter of Zi Eta Iota. In 1992, she progressed to the Preceptor Degree, forming the Preceptor Gammi Pi chapter. In the spring of 1997, she received the Laureate Degree. She held offices of president, vice president, secretary, both recording and corresponding, and extensive office in both the Ritual of Jewels chapter and the Examplar chapter. In 1987, she received the Order of the Rose, recognizing 15 years of membership.
At the Founders Day dinner this spring, she received the Silver Circle recognizing 25 years of service and membership in Beta Sigma Phi and was recognized as Girl of the Year, an award she had previously won in 1988 and 1991.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, James E. Fisher, whom she married Sept. 14, 1968; one daughter, Leslie Williams of Breezewood, Pa.; three sisters, Phyllis Truax of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., Karen Shoemaker and Patty Keefer, both of Needmore; and two brothers, Coy E. Spade of Hustontown, Pa., and James F. Spade of Needmore.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. The Rev. Doug Poffenberger, the Rev. Jerry Rogers and the Rev. David Reams will officiate.
Friends may call at Dalla Valle Funeral Service, Everett, Pa., Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m. and at the church Sunday 30 minutes prior to the service.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A memorial service for Harvey Victor Stouffer, who died Sunday, June 15, 1997, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Charles Town Presbyterian Church.

Shane H. Ebens
Shane Huntington Ebens, 34, of 100 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 30, 1962, in Michigan, he was the son of Richard Frank and Mary Jean Comings Ebens of Hudson, Mass.
He was employed with Dynawatch in Hagerstown.
He was a member of Antietam Volunteer Fire Co. in Hagerstown.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Thomas Ebens of Massachusetts; one sister, Linda McGath of Dallas; maternal grandparents, James and Doris Comings of Manchester, Md.; and two uncles.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor Zuck will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.

Winifred E. Fortney
Winifred Eileen Fortney, 76, of Manor Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore.
Born Oct. 14, 1920, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Franklin and Lena Semler Bailey.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard C. Morris, and by her second husband, Earl E. Fortney.
She was employed by Eyerly's Department Store in Hagerstown.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.
She also was a member of the PTA of Hickory Elementary School.
She is survived by two sons, Douglas F. Morris and John L. Morris, both of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Lois Decker of Mount Lena, and Linda Bollinger of Waynesboro, Pa.; one stepson, Olin Fortney of San Francisco; two sisters, Lois Eardley of Hagerstown and Doris Heagy of Hershey, Pa.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday at 5 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 216 N. Cleveland Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond H. Shriver will officiate.

Gavin T. Ritchie
Gavin Tyler Ritchie, infant son of Paul A. Jr. and Nicole S. Green Ritchey, of 12163 Walnut Point West, Hagerstown, died Monday, July 7, 1997, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Robert R. and Judy E. Green of Clear Spring; paternal grandparents, Paul A. and Dulce M. Ritchey of Hagerstown; maternal great-grandparents, Harold P. and Julia M. Green of Hagerstown; seven aunts and uncles; and nine cousins.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown. The Rev. Helen S. Smith will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

Helen W. Mentzer
LITITZ, Pa. - Helen W. Mentzer, 89, of Lititz, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at Luther Acres Nursing Facility in Lititiz.
Born Nov. 26, 1907, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late David T. and Catherine F. Wolfe.
Her husband, Charles T. Mentzer Jr., died in 1978. They were married on April 12, 1930.
She was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.
She is survived by one son, Thomas Meredith Mentzer of Adrian, Mich.; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Wickey of Royal Oak, Mich., Charles Mentzer of Seattle, Wash., and Alice E. Mentzer of Ypsilanti, Mich.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Pearl Thompson, Rachel Maysilles, Mary Unger and Frances Zentmyer; and two brothers, Frank Wolfe and Lawrence Wolfe.
Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Charles R. Richardson Jr.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Charles R. Richardson Jr., 88, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born July 16, 1908, in Key West, Fla., he was the son of the late Charles R. and Nellie B. Curry Richardson Sr.
He was employed by General Service Administration as a painter.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Barker Richardson, at home; one daughter, Kathryn Richardson Nichols of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, John H. Richardson of Key West; and three grandchildren.
Services and burial will be private in Great Cacapon Cemetery, Great Cacapon, W.Va.
