George M. Damm

WILLIAMSPORT - A memorial service for George Millard Damm, 88, of 16505 Virginia Ave., C-135, Williamsport, who died Saturday, June 28, will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Rev. Carroll Boyer will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

His cremated remains will be interred in the family lot at Good Shepherd Cemetery, in Ellicott city, Md., following the service Saturday.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Shirley I. Miller

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Shirley Irene Miller, 63, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at her home.

Born Nov. 24, 1933, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Walter R. and Evelyn Johnson Cochran.

She was retired, and was former owner of Jefferson Inn in Jefferson, Md.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by her husband of 10 years, Raymond S. Miller; two daughters, Rhonda L. Roberson of Wheaton, Md., and Melissa I. Reynolds of Sharpsburg; one son, Rodney L. Roberson of Frederick, Md.; one stepson, Gene Miller of Florida; five sisters, Doris V. Conrad of Rockville, Md., Joan M. Rutter and Abbie G. Butler, both of Damascus, Md., Marjorie A. Helmick of New York, and Geraldine Ferrell of Wheaton; three brothers, Walter R. Cochran Jr. of Boyds, Md., William L. Cochran of Mount Airy, Md., and Richard L. Cochran of Martinsburg; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel in Martinsburg. The Rev. John R. Yost will officiate. Entombment will be in Rosedale Cemetery Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Road, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401; or to Blairton United Methodist Church, Route 3, Box 139-H, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Clarence E. Ford

FREDERICK, Md. - Clarence E. Ford, 82, of Harmony, Md., died Friday, July 11, 1997, at College View Center, Frederick.

Born Oct. 23, 1914, in Harmony, he was the son of the late Charles C. and Sadie M. Kinna Ford.

He owned and operated C.E. Ford TV Repair in Harmony, for many years. He retired in 1984.

He was a member of Harmony Church of the Brethren.

He was a member of Harmony Community Club; and a former Little League coach.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Blanche Emma Ropp Ford; one daughter, Jane Ballam of Harmony; two sisters, Carrie Lutz of Middletown, Md., and Grace Ropp of North Carolina; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Viola Hartsock and Bertha Gouker; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Harmony Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church Road, Harmony. The Rev. Tracy Wiser will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville, Md., from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Harmony Church of the Brethren, c/o Lois Willard, 3924 Brethren Church Road, Myersville, Md. 21773.

Paul E. Minnich

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Paul E. "Jim" Minnich, 69, of 29 E. North St., Waynesboro, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.

He had been in critical health since suffering a stroke Monday, July 7, 1997.

Born Jan. 7, 1928, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Joseph and Ada Rowe Minnich.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Armatha E. Diffendorfer Minnich, on April 28, 1996. They were married April 5, 1953.

He was employed by Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, for 17 years. He retired in 1989. He was previously employed making ice cream by Arthur's Dairy, formerly of Waynesboro. He also was employed at Martin's Tire Service, Waynesboro.

He was a former member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda K. Moats of Waynesboro; one brother, Earl F. Minnich of Waynesboro; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy I. Shultz; and seven brothers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Roger Keech will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

Family will receive friends Monday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Robert L. Carter

Robert Lee Carter, 68, of 1401 Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 21, 1929, in Hagerstown, he was a son of the late John Francis Carter and Amelia Turner Carter.

He is survived by two sisters, Evelyn Kershner and Juanita Klipp, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Alton Carter of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Elizabeth Wojeck; and five brothers, William Carter, Harold Carter, Hubert Carter, John Carter and Wallace Carter.

Graveside services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor Zuck will officiate.

Arrangements are being made by Douglass A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard North, Hagerstown.

Gavin T. Ritchey

Gavin Tyler Ritchey, infant son of Paul A. Jr. and Nicole S. Green Ritchey, of 12163 Walnut Point West, Hagerstown, died Monday, July 7, 1997, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Robert R. and Judy E. Green of Clear Spring; paternal grandparents, Paul A. and Dulce M. Ritchey of Hagerstown; maternal great-grandparents, Harold P. and Julia M. Green of Hagerstown; seven aunts and uncles; and nine cousins.

Graveside services will be today at 1 p.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown. The Rev. Helen S. Smith will officiate.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.

Ruth A. Moats

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Ruth Alice Moats, 91, of Buffalo, formerly of Boonsboro, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, in Buffalo.

Born Feb. 1, 1906, in Tilghmanton, she was a daughter of the late John and Florence Ridenour Moats.

She was previously employed as a housekeeper for many families in the Boonsboro area.

She is survived by two nieces, Mary Umland of Buffalo and Lena Eavey of Hagerstown; and two nephews, Louie Cole of Jacksonville, N.C., and David Cole of Jacksonville, Ark.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Manor Cemetery, Tilghmanton. The Rev. Dwight Morgan will officiate.

Local arrangements are by Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.

Steven A. Rodeffer Sr.

Steven Arlen Rodeffer Sr., 44, of 75 Manor Driver, Apt. A1, Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 4, 1953, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Richard Arlen and Phyllis Beall Rodeffer.

He was employed by Turner Taxi.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of VFW Post 1936 and AMVETS Post 10.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn M. Rodeffer; two sons, Steven Arlen Rodeffer Jr. and Richard William Rodeffer, both of Hagerstown; two sisters, Sandra McPherson and Cheryl Kesecker, both of Hagerstown; one brother, Douglas Rodeffer of Hagerstown; one grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Rodeffer; and one brother, Michael Rodeffer.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Bill McPherson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

George V. Hewett

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - George Vincent Hewett, 68, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at his home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born March 4, 1929, in McConnellsburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Ellis Edward and Dorothy Amanda Pearl Bishop Hewett.

He was a retired mechanic. He was previously employed by Harford Sanitation Co., Harford, Md.

He attended Mahnes Chapel United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol J. Hewitt of Winchester, Va., and Katherin Woford of Berkeley Springs; three stepsons, Harmon Hurst of Baltimore, Roger Hurst of Annapolis, Md., and James Earl Hurst of Pasadena, Md.; three sisters, Opal Wills, Hope Stotler and Ruth Cain, all of Berkeley Springs; two brothers, Edward Hewett of Berkeley Springs and Wayne Hewett of Glen Burnie, Md.; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, David Vincent Hewett; and one stepson, Robert Wayne Hurst.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Wayne Frum will officiate. Burial will be in Black Oak Mennonite Church, Warfordsburg, Pa.

The family will receive friends Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mildred Gearhart

MONTROSE, Calif. - Mildred "Tootie" Gearhart, 83, of 2463 Montrose Ave., Montrose, Calif., formerly of the Rouzerville, Pa., area, died July 2, 1997, at her home.

She was in failing health for the past year.

Born Sept. 5, 1913, in Rouzerville, she was the daughter of the late Henry O. and Ellen Sheldon Smith.

She was a 1930 graduate of Washington Township High School.

She and her late husband, Kenneth Gearhart, were married in September 1936.

While she lived in this area, she was a member of Rouzerville United Methodist Church, Rouzerville.

She was the last of her immediate family.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979; five sisters; and four brothers.

It was her request that she be cremated and be buried in the family lot at Harbaugh's Church Cemetery near Rouzerville.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial contributions may be sent to Rouzerville United Methodist Church, c/o the Rev. Jeffrey Swanger, 10924 Trail East, Waynesboro, Pa. 12768.

Shirley A. Howard

BOONSBORO - Shirley Ann Howard, 50, of 8209-A Mapleville Road, Boonsboro, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at her home.

Born April 13, 1947, at Mapleville, she was the daughter of P. Lorraine Detrow Miller, with whom she resided, and the late Roscoe Lewis Miller.

She had retired from the Montgomery County, Md., Board of Education and Ridgeway Trucking Co., Frederick, Md.

She was a member of Beaver Creek Christian Church, Hagerstown.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son, Kyle L. Howard Jr. of Gastonia, N.C.; two brothers, Richard L. Miller and Monte G. Miller, both of Boonsboro; one niece and several nephews.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. J. Mark Curran will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
