Elmer W. Kerlin

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Elmer W. Kerlin, 79, of HCR 75, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, at his home.

Born Jan. 28, 1918, in Knobsville, Pa., he was the son of the late Ira and Barbara Ann Forney Kerlin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty May Knable.

He was a former employee of Pennsylvania Turnpike, Pennsylvania Department of Highways and Letterkenny Army Depot.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Jane Robison of McConnellsburg; one son, George Kerlin of McConnellsburg; one sister, Grace Martz of Hustontown, Pa.; a companion of 18 years, Nellie Seville; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, eight brothers and one sister.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg.

The Rev. Christian Elliott will officiate.

He will be cremated.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Thursday.

Daniel I. Eshleman

Daniel Irvin Eshleman, 84, of 17118 Cole Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster, Pa.

Born April 27, 1913, in Smithsburg, he was the son of the late Daniel H. and Effie Hersch Eshleman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace B. Eshleman.

He retired from the Valley Mall in April of 1997. He previously was employed by Larstan Industries for 16 years, the Hagerstown Rubber Co. for 25 years, and was a farmer for 29 years.

He was a member of Calvary Grace Brethren Church.

He is survived by three sons, Kenneth R. Eshleman of Hagerstown, Willie I. Eshleman of Maugansville and the Rev. Daniel S. Eshleman of Elizabethtown, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Pauline A. Mitchell; and one sister, Pauline Eshleman.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Grace Brethren Church, 115 Bryan Place, Hagerstown.

The Rev. Douglas Courter will officiate.

Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church Thursday.

Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Grace Brethren Church, 115 Bryan Place, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

James W. Monroe Jr.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - James W. Monroe Jr., 50, of Shepherdstown, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at his home.

Born July 12, 1947, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late James W. Monroe Sr. and Hattie Cooke Monroe.

In previous years, he was employed by Dixie Narco Co. and National Fruit Co.

He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Dozier of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Carmen Hopewell of Ohio; one son, Kevin D. Hopewell of Shepherdstown; eight sisters, Ruth D. Brown, Joanne Wright and Sara Kidrick, all of Shepherdstown, Betty Roberts, at home, Naomi Johnson, Kathy Monroe and Angela Washington, all of Martinsburg, and Melanie Winfrey of Virginia; two brothers, Norman Monroe Sr. of Shepherdstown and Clyde V. Monroe of Martinsburg; 16 grandchildren; nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, Martinsburg.

The Rev. Ernest D. Lyles Sr. will officiate.

Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

A wake will be held at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Adele M. Hamilton

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Adele Mona Hamilton, 83, of Spring Valley Estates, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Sept. 23, 1913, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Leon and Grace Digenaro Aquila.

She was a homemaker.

She was of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Oliver Hamilton; one daughter, Mary Anne Carter of Charles Town; four sons, John O. Hamilton Jr. of Tucson, Ariz., Gene Hamilton of Thurmont, Md., Ronald Hamilton of Herndon, Va., and Michael Hamilton of Charles Town; one brother, Michael Aquila of Florida; 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.

The Rev. Brian Shoda will officiate.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Rockville, Md.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Blanche A. Rowland

Blanche A. Rowland, 96, a resident of Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of Blair's Valley Road, Clear Spring, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 2, 1901, in Blair's Valley, she was the daughter of the late Ward and Effie Repp Carbaugh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Rowland, in 1960.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Blair's Valley First Church of God and the Ladies Bible Class.

She is survived by three daughters, Vera V. Kretzer and Louise H. McKee, both of Clear Spring, and Doris L. Stouffer of Greencastle, Pa.; three sons, Robert L. Rowland, Daniel E. Rowland and Dale L. Rowland, all of Clear Spring; three sisters, Ethel Sword of Hagerstown, Lorraine McCarty of Clear Spring and Ruth Rohrer of Haines City, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Chester Rowland; three sisters, Julia Flory, Mary Mason and Nellie Carbaugh; and two brothers, Charles Carbaugh and Paul Carbaugh.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Cemetery, Clear Spring.

The Rev. Steve Amundson will officiate.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Clear Spring Ambulance Club, P.O. Box 61, Clear Spring, Md. 21722.

Arrangements are by Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, Clear Spring.

Patricia C. Whiteley

COCOA BEACH, Fla. - Patricia Carol Whiteley, 43, of Cocoa Beach, and New York City, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Monday, Aug. 4, 1997.

Born Nov. 30, 1953, at Fort Bragg, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Gloria B. England and John F. Whiteley.

She was a 1971 graduate of North Hagerstown High School and a 1975 graduate of Auburn University.

For the past 21 years, she was employed as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines.

She was a skier and antique collector.

She is survived by three sisters, Ruth W. Kershner of Morgantown, W.Va., Laura W. Haugh of Salisbury, Md., and Carrie W. Lama of Gransonville, Md.; one niece; and four nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. at Doub's Woods, North Pavilion, Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to Manhattan Center for Pain Management, Roosevelt Hospital, 1000 Tenth Ave., 14th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10019; or the charity of one's choice.

Helen R. Mills

Helen Ruth Mills, 84, of 7 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, who died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997, is also survived by one sister, G. Marlene Mills of Smithsburg.

Donald E. Zecher

JEFFERSON, Md. - Donald Eugene Zecher, 77, of 1529 Arnoldstown Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born July 11, 1920, in Burkittsville, Md., he was a son of the late George F. and Leola Compher Zecher.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, E. Beatrice Zecher, who died Sept. 26, 1996.

He farmed in the Burkittsville area his entire life, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Burkittsville.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda L. Brannon of Jefferson; one son, Larry E. Zecher of Frederick; one sister, Regina Arnold of Frederick; one brother, Harold Zecher of Jefferson; and one granddaughter.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown, Md.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Burkittsville.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday.

Margaret E. Eyler

YEADON, Pa. - Margaret E. Brown Eyler, 75, of Yeadon, formerly of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997, at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pa., after an extended illness.

She was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. Brown and May C. Brown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Eyler, who died in 1988.

She had lived most of her life in Hagerstown before residing in Yeadon for the past 29 years.

She was a 1943 graduate of College of Notre Dame of Maryland; she graduated from University of Maryland School of Law in 1947.

She was proprietor of two businesses, Ryan Employment Agency and Pope Avenue Tavern, both in Hagerstown.

She is survived by her stepmother, Donnagean Talbert of Hagerstown; three sons, Westley C. Eyler of Clifton Heights, Pa., Stephen A. Eyler of Westminster, Calif., and Spencer G. Eyler of Collingdale, Pa.; and two granddaughters.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown.

The Rev. Reese Davis will officiate.

Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Friends may call at the church Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

Bert F. Plyler

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Bert F. Plyler, 89, of 427 Hood St., died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at his home.

Born Feb. 27, 1908, in Brookville, Pa., he was the son of the late James H. Plyler and Edna Coon Plyler.

He was employed by the former P&B Garage, Chambersburg, where he was owner and operator for 40 years.

He was a member of Open Door Church, Chambersburg, where he at one time served as usher.

He was a life member of Loyal Order of Moose 842, Chambersburg; and Franklin Fire Co., Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Swan Plyler, whom he married Oct. 22, 1977, at home; one son, James W. Plyler of Chambersburg; one stepdaughter, Paulette Lockbaum of Chambersburg; one stepson, Greg Simpson of Seattle, Wash.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Pearl Bittinger Plyler; three sisters; and two brothers.

Services will be Friday at Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

The Rev. Arthur Brown will officiate.

Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

A viewing will be Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
