Clarkson W. Davidson

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Clarkson W. Davidson, 89, of Westminster, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Westminster Nursing and Convalescent Center after an extended illness.

Born Jan. 3, 1908, in Emory, Md., he was the son of the late Luther Clarkson and Blanche Rupp Davidson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Caple Davidson, who died in April 1988.

He was an auto mechanic and for many years was employed as a machinist by National Instrument Co. Inc., Baltimore.

He was a member of Sandy Mount Methodist Church and Willing Workers Sunday School Class.

He is survived by four daughters, L. Marie Wilson of Union Bridge, Md., Dorothy D. Priddy of Malvern, Pa., Martha D. Welch of Smithsburg and Ann Kirby of Alta Monte Springs, Fla.; three sons, John W. Davidson of Big Pool, Jerry C. Davidson of Westminster and Allan L. Davidson of Finksburg, Md.; and two sisters, Gertrude M. Basler of Hampstead, Md., and Anna Faye Jenkins of Upperco, Md.

He was preceded in death by one sister, L. Ruth DeVage; and three brothers, Norville Davidson, Gilbert D. Davidson and Everett A. Davidson.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Sandy Mount United Methodist Church. The Rev. E. James Stutler will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Myers Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, and Friday one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorial contributions be sent to Sandy Mount United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 2101 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg, Md. 21048.

Ellsworth F. Fetterhoff Sr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ellsworth F. Fetterhoff Sr., 76, of 4756 Coontown Road, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg.

Born Feb. 10, 1921, in Dayton, Pa., he was the son of the late J. Clair Fetterhoff and Minnie E. Lydick Fetterhoff.

He was employed by Letterkenny Army Depot for more than 30 years, retiring in 1979. He also had owned and operated the former Fetterhoff Enterprises out of his home for more than 35 years. He was previously employed by Civilian Conservation Camps in Sheffield, Pa., prior to his military service.

A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor, having been stationed at Scofield Barracks.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg.

He was a life member of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Chambersburg; Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, Chambersburg; he was a stockcar driver during the 1950s, racing for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Stavana Fetterhoff, whom he married Sept. 26, 1945, at home; two daughters, Janice M. Buterbaugh of Chambersburg and Brenda L. Joyner of Los Angeles; one son, Ellsworth F. Fetterhoff Jr. of Sykesville, Md.; two sisters; three brothers; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Daniel F. Lawler S.J. will be celebrant. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

A viewing will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

There will be a recitation of the Rosary today at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gary D. Wilt

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Gary Deane Wilt, 55, of McConnellsburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1997, at his law office at 200 N. Second St., McConnellsburg.

Born Oct. 4, 1941, in Paw Paw, W.Va., he was the son of L. Mae Mellott of Needmore, Pa., and the late Henry Salem Wilt.

He was a 1959 graduate of Southern Fulton High School, pursuing undergraduate studies at University of Maryland and the Prince George's and Harrisburg area community colleges. He received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Shippensburg University in 1970. He was a graduate of Dickinson School of Law.

He had been a practicing attorney in Fulton County since 1973 and had served the county as district attorney and interim public defender. He also maintained law offices in Adams and Bedford counties.

He served four years with the U.S. Army in Japan.

He was a member of bars of Bedford County, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and U.S. Supreme Court.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Charlotte Hixson Wilt, whom he married May 29, 1965, at home; two sons, Jared H. Wilt of McConnellsburg and Zachary Wilt at home; sisters and brothers, Blanche Crone of Stephenson, W.Va., Clifford M. Wilt of New Oxford, Pa., Carroll J. Wilt of Gettysburg, Pa., Huldah M. Chesnut of Pataskala, Ohio, Aletha Strait of Harrisonville, Pa., Anne Miller of Ft. Littleton, Pa., N. Edward Wilt of Fairfield, Pa., and Joel Wilt of Oakland, Md.; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Roger H. Wilt.

Private memorial services were conducted Saturday, Aug. 9, at Akersville. The Rev. C.B. Shaal officiated.

Arrangements were made by Pennsylvania Cremation Society.

Averill V. Phoenix

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Averill Virginia Phoenix, 83, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at her home.

Born April 11, 1914, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Elizabeth Fox.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

She was a retired employee of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

She is survived by three nieces, Hazy B. Washington and Ruth P. Branson, both of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Ann Taylor of Waynesboro, Pa.; and one nephew, Charles Washington Jr. of Laurel, Md.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Sara Creamer; and one brother, Charles Washington.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home. The Rev. Alfred Statesman will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family will meet at the funeral home Friday at 10:45 a.m. prior to services. The casket will be closed.

Merle F. Boward

SMITHSBURG - Merle Franklin Boward, 56, of Smithsburg, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, as a result of a motorcycle accident.

Born Aug. 30, 1940, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Helen Elizabeth Eichelberger Boward of Williamsport, and the late Charles Boward.

He retired from the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.

He was employed at Maryland Correctional Institution.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a photographer, and retired as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era as a cartoonist and illustrator.

He was a member of Maryland Correctional Officers Association, Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Maryland Chapter Seven in Funkstown; Washington County Abate of Maryland; and Improved Order of Redmen in Williamsport.

He was an artist whose works were displayed at Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mildred Joyce Lester Boward; one daughter, Renee Michaela Mong of Falling Waters, W.Va.; two sons, Galvin Keith Boward of Hagerstown and Michael Scott Boward of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one brother, Donald B. Boward of State Line, Pa.; seven granddaughters; and two grandsons.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Bishop Michael Lee will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Bernard S. Shepherd

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Bernard S. Shepherd, 84, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, in Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

He was the last of his immediate family.

Born Jan. 28, 1913, in Sistersville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Franklin J. and Armitta Holmes Shepherd.

He was a retired welder from Heiden Construction.

He is survived by his wife, Cora Kidder Shepherd at home; one daughter, Mary Lee Rogers of Moundsville, W.Va.; two sons, Charles E. Shepherd Sr. of Martinsburg and James Steven Shepherd of Utica, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jacqueline Ostrander; two sons, Bernard S. Shepherd Jr. and Franklin Shepherd; one sister; and three brothers.

Services and burial will be private.

Arrangements are made by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Sylvester E. Cooper

MILLVILLE, W.Va. - Sylvester Eugene Cooper, 52, of Millville, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at his home.

Born Aug. 23, 1944, in Lovettsville, Va., he was the son of the late Sylvester Keller and Katherine Josephine Shumaker Cooper.

He formerly was employed by Halltown Paperboard Co.

He was a member of Mission Tabernacle Church.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Mae McDonald Cooper at home; four daughters, Tammy Kay Cooper of Hagerstown, Barbara Ann Cooper of Charles Town, W.Va., Mary Jane Cooper of Sutton, W.Va., and Stacy Lynn Cooper; four sons, Sylvester Keller Cooper Jr., Robert Eugene Cooper, Marshall David Cooper and Richard Wayne Cooper, all of Ranson, W.Va.; one sister, Patricia Ann Cooper; and 13 grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mission Tabernacle Church. The Rev. Lee R. Strickler will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson.

A. Patricia Grove

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A. Patricia "Patty" Grove, 65, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born Sept. 27, 1931, in Topeka, Kan., she was the daughter of the late Dewey H. and Carrie Eddins Ambrose.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. Grove, who died Jan. 16, 1997.

She was employed for many years by the West Virginia Racing Commission at Charles Town Races as a license clerk.

She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Nancy Carter Grove Warrenfeltz; one sister, Ellen Whitemore of Charles Town, W.Va.; one stepgranddaughter, Whitney Carter Warrenfeltz; three nieces; and two nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. William E. Merki will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

William S. Seville

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - William S. "Bill" Seville, 65, of Lot 13, 13790 Molly Pitcher Highway, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born April 13, 1932, in Welsh Run, Pa., he was a son of the late Levi H. and Miriam Carbaugh Seville.

He was employed by Hicks Chevrolet-Buick-Volvo & Geo of Greencastle, retiring in 1981. He continued his association with the dealership on a part-time basis as a buyer representative.

He was a member of Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church, Mercersburg, Pa.

He was a lifetime member of Greencastle Sportsman's Association.

He is survived by four daughters, Bonita J. Egolf of Mercersburg, Judith L. Lee of Maxton, N.C., and Kathy J. Cook and Penny J. Perkins, both of Hagerstown; two sons, David W. Seville of Mercersburg and Billie J. Seville of St. Thomas, Pa.; one sister, the Rev. Mabel Seville of Dover, Pa.; one brother, Elwood L. Seville of St. Thomas; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Roy E. Brake Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

A viewing will be held to day from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
