Ronald L. Shives

HANCOCK - Ronald Lee Shives, 57, of East Main Street, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born June 14, 1940, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late LeRoy and Mary Kelly Shives.

He was formerly employed by Kirk Ford Sales, Hancock.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Hancock.

He is survived by his wife, Dolly L. Pine Shives of Hancock, whom he married Nov. 15, 1959; three daughters, Carolyn Knable, Lori Forsythe and Misty Dawn Shives, all of Hancock; one son, Ronald L. Shives Jr. of Hancock; one sister, Ruth Ritz of Warfordsburg, Pa.; six brothers, Jimmy Shives, Keny Shives and Dennie Shives, all of Hancock, Paul Shives and Larry Shives of Warfordsburg and Gary Shives of Berkeley Springs; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Shives.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Hancock. The Rev. George W. Glick will be celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, where a Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open today from 2 to 9 p.m.

Lou E. Matthews

Lou Ella Matthews, 89, of 1304 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, and formerly of Monterey, Tenn., died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Coffman Nursing Home where she was a resident for 11 years.

She died after a 15-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Born July 24 ,1908, in Putnam County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Effie Ann Elizabeth Murphy Inman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Romie C. Matthews in 1984.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Monterey.

She is survived by one daughter, Jane E. Hurd of Hagerstown; one son, Ronie C. Matthews of Hagerstown; one sister, Minnie Hicks of Dayton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Ray Matthews.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Coffman Nursing Home, 1304 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are by MinnichFuneral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Evelyn E. Manahan

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Evelyn Elizabeth "Bippy" Manahan, 77, of 7093 Slabtown Road, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, in her home after an extended illness.

Born March 9, 1920, in Bridgeport, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles Perry and Mary Margaret Brown Koontz.

She spent her early life around Emmitsburg, Md., and Taneytown, Md.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall B. Manahan, whom she married Dec. 24, 1938. She was employed by Gettysburg Shoe, Gettysburg, Pa., and Sylvania Shoe in Waynesboro, among other shoe factories, as machine operator. She retired in 1979.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Burns of Waynesboro, Frances Kline of Smithsburg and Linda Dietz of Carlisle, Pa.; two sons, John Manahan and Charles Manahan, both of Waynesboro; one stepson; four sisters, Catherine Stahley and Ethel Riley, both of Gettysburg, Dorothy Preston of York, Pa., and Ruth Swartz of Emmitsburg; three brothers, James Koontz of Gettysburg, Lloyd Koontz of Taneytown and Kenneth Koontz of Emmitsburg; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Tressler; one son, James Manahan; one sister, Anna Topper; and one brother, William Koontz.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Roger D. Cales will officiate. Burial will be in Elias Lutheran Cemetery in Emmitsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Edna B. Sims

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Edna B. Sims, 74, of 150 Wessels Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997, at her home.

Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Elizabeth Lewis Burnett Sr.

She attended North Street School.

She retired as an inspector from Bundy Corp., after four years of service. She was previously employed with General Electric for 18 years.

She is survived by her husband, Herman R. Sims; one daughter, Ruby A. Wilson of Atlanta; five sisters, Nettie Russ, Jacqueline Harris, Lela Greene and Lola Mosby, all of Hagerstown, and Alberta Freeman of Fort Washington, Md.; four brothers, Ernest Burnett, Clarence Burnett, Thomas Burnett and Austin Burnett, all of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two cousins; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, George Albert Burnett, Melvin Burnett, William Burnett Jr., Mortimer Burnett, Chester Burnett and John Burnett.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at King's Apostle Holiness Church of God, West Bethel Street, Hagerstown. Derek Kee, elder, will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Linda A. Harty

CASCADE - Linda Ann Bentzel Harty, 48, of 25212 Cascade Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 16, 1948, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of Clara E. Wirman Bentzel of Hagerstown and the late Harold L. Bentzel.

She lived all her life in the Sabillasville and Cascade areas.

She was a 1966 graduate of Thurmont High School, Thurmont, Md.

She was employed part time by Victor Cullen Academy and worked for the government for more than 29 years. She was previously employed by Western Maryland Center, Hagerstown; and State Farm Insurance Co., Frederick, Md.

She attended Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Sabillasville, where she also attended Bible study.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Lowell E. Harty, whom she married July 23, 1966; one daughter, Shanda M. Eyler of Cascade; one son, Shane M. Harty of Cascade; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. The Rev. George Tuggle will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade.

Family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to American Cancer Society, 1035 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Blanche A. Rowland

CLEAR SPRING - Blanche A. Rowland, 96, formerly of Blairs Valley Road, and a resident of Avalon Manor Nursing Home, who died Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997, also was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Hawbaker.

Alan R. Barnhart

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Alan R. Barnhart, 26, of 358 W. Main St., died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, as a result of a motorcycle accident at Salem Road, Greene Township, Pa.

Born Nov. 13, 1970, in Chambersburg, he was the son of Kenneth R. Barnhart of 168 Garfield St., Chambersburg, and Patricia A. Brown Mohler of 1994 Black Gap Road, Fayetteville.

He was employed by C&J Roofing. He was previously employed by Ventura Foods, Chambersburg, and then Beck Manufacturing, Greencastle, Pa.

He was a member of Marine Corps League, Chambersburg; and Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, Chambersburg.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Tressia M. Heffner Barnhart, whom he married Feb. 28, 1991, at home; three sons, Shawn A. Barnhart, Shane A. Barnhart and Dakota G. Barnhart, all at home; two sisters, Christi Ervin of Chambersburg and Fawn L. Clopper of Fayetteville; a stepmother, Linda Corwell Barnhart of Chambersburg; a stepfather, R. Brian Mohler of Fayetteville; maternal grandparents, James and Pauline Baker of Fayetteville; and a paternal grandmother, Betty Bricker of Chambersburg.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. George S. Mouer Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Quincy, Pa.

A viewing will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ralph F. Shafer

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Ralph Floyd Shafer, 89, of 13760 Old Route 16, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at his home.

Born March 29, 1908, in Reid, Md., he was the son of the late Samuel J. and Emma Jane Schultz Shafer.

He was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area.

He was employed by Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro, as machinist from 1926 through 1948; co-owned Shafer's Paint and Body Shop with his brother, Russell Shafer, from 1948 through 1956; owned and operated Shafer's Auto Sales from 1956 until retiring in 1971; and worked part time at Maugansville Elevator and Lumber Co. from 1971 through 1974.

He was a member of Rouzerville Church of the Brethren, where he served as deacon for more than 50 years.

He volunteered with Cross Keys Brethren Home, New Oxford, Pa.; at Washington Township Transfer Station; and Overseas Relief, New Windsor, Md. He was a member of National AARP.

He is survived by his wife of more than 70 years, Nettie Maybell Kline Shafer at home; six daughters, Dorothy M. Hess and Barbara Sue Cordell, both of Chambersburg, Mary Louise Harshman of Middletown, Md., Eleanor R. Young of Greencastle, Pa., Arlene G. Cosner of Maugansville and Lois E. Valentine of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three sisters, Gladys Strite and Alice Varner, both of Waynesboro, and Eleanor C. Hoffman of Chambersburg; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Annie Minnick; and four brothers, Russell Shafer, Paul Shafer, Lloyd Shafer and Raymond Shafer.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Price's Church of the Brethren, Wayne Highway, Waynesboro. The Rev. Len Smith and the Rev. R. Donald Shafer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Averill Virginia Phoenix, 83, of Martinsburg, who died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, is survived by a niece, Hazel B. Washington of Shepherdstown.

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Services for Clarkson W. Davidson, 89, of Westminster, who died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Sandy Mount United Methodist Church. The Rev. E. James Stutler will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Myers Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, and Friday one hour prior to services at the church.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A. Patricia "Patty" Grove, 65, of Martinsburg, who died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, is survived by her sister, Ellen Whitmore of Charles Town, W.Va.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - William S. "Bill" Seville, 65, of Lot 13, 13790 Molly Pitcher Highway, who died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, also is survived by his companion of eight years, Hazel Mowen of Greencastle, Pa.

Richard P. Turner Sr.

RANSON, W.Va. - Richard Paul "Pete" Turner Sr., 55, of Ranson, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Feb. 27, 1942, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Marshall V. and Edna K. Ott Turner.

He was employed by William A. Hazel Construction Co., Fairfax, Va.

He was a member of Murrill Hill United Methodist Church.

He is survived by four sons, Richard P. Turner Jr., Shawn M. Turner and Christopher L. Turner, all of Ranson, and Todd D. Turner of Martinsburg; two sisters, Judy Dillow of Ranson and Debra Gray of Front Royal, Va.; three brothers, David M. Turner of Middleway, W.Va., Wayne Turner of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Terry Turner of Charles Town, W.Va.; three grandchildren; and a close companion, Catherine L. Mason.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ellard W. Turner, Donald Turner, Gerald Turner and Kevin Turner.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. James W. Chambly Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

YEADON, Pa. - Margaret E. Brown Eyler, 75, of Yeadon, formerly of Hagerstown, who died Saturday, Aug. 9, at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pa., is survived by her stepdaughter, Donnagean Talbert of Hagerstown.
