Gene R. Hutzell Sr.

WILLIAMSPORT - Gene Raymond "Beanie" Hutzell Sr., 61, of 14711 Bottom Road, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Dec. 23, 1935, in Brunswick, Md., he was a son of the late Roscoe Alvin and Esther Gosnell Hutzell.

He was employed as a welder by Jerr-Dan Corp., Greencastle, Pa.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1964.

He is survived by his wife, Joann Staley Hutzell of Williamsport; one son, Gene R. Hutzell Jr. of Hagerstown; two sisters, Gloria Barklow and Betty Geyer, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Charles Hutzell of Pinesburg and Terry Hutzell of Sharpsburg; and one granddaughter.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Thomas L. Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open Sunday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Sewell M. Elliott

MIDDLEWAY, W.Va. - Sewell Madison "John" Elliott, 73, of Middleway, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997, at his home.

Born March 4, 1924, in Gore, Va., he was the son of the late Charles O. and Valley C. Keyes Elliott.

He retired from Burch Box Factory in Summit Point, W.Va.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served during World War II.

He was of the Pentecostal faith.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Pearl C. Unger Elliott; two sons, John M. Elliott of Middleway, and David L. Elliott of Boonsboro; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dulcie Smelser and Virgie R. Elliott; and six brothers, Luther Elliott, Pete Elliott, the Rev. Clark W. Elliott, Jack Elliott, Clarence Elliott and Forrest Elliott.

Services wil be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. The Rev. Henry D. Styron will officiate. Burial will be in Middleway Masonic Cemetery in Middleway, W.Va.

Friends will be received at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Richard J. Simoules

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Richard James Simoules, 69, of 1010 Sunset Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997, at his home.

Born Aug. 23, 1927, in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of the late James P. and Jean Barolski Simoules.

He attended Lafrance Beauty School in Florida and Robert Flance Academy for advanced beauty school training in New York.

He owned and operated beauty salons in Kensington, Md., and Bethesda, Md.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II.

He was a member of Mason-Kensington Lodge 196; president of SHCA 223, a hairdressing club, from 1970-1971; and AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet C. Simoules of Falling Waters; two sons, James M. Simoules of Ellicott City, Md., and Joseph A. Simoules of Wheaton, Md.; one sister, Mary A. Tyler of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one half brother, Kenneth Grisdale of Canfield, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a half sister, Ann Russell; and a half brother, Frank Russell.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 W. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. James Haskiell will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Military graveside services will be conducted by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, Hagerstown.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open Sunday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Violet Z. Smith

BOONSBORO - Violet Ziegler Smith, 94, died Thursday, July 31, 1997, at Fahrney Keedy Memorial Home, Boonsboro.

She was the daughter of the late John W. Ziegler and Lulu B. Lonberger Ziegler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur J. Smith, who died in 1987.

She was a music teacher for many years.

She was a past matron of Eastern Star and served in the choir of Fahrney Keedy.

She is survived by one daughter, Jeanine D. Caldwell of San Antonio, Texas; one son, Arthur Z. Smith of Edgewater, Md.; and one grandson, Sgt. H. Dean Heath Jr. of Clovis, N.M.

Her body was donated to Anatomy Board of Maryland.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Fahrney Keedy Chapel, 8507 Mapleville Road, Boonsboro. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate.

Donald E. McCleary

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Donald E. "Red" McCleary, 64, of 124 Garfield St., died Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997, at his home after an extended illness.

Born Nov. 17, 1932, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Charles Edward McCleary Sr. and Helen Viola Brown McCleary.

He lived most of his life in the Waynesboro area.

He was a 1951 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during the Korean War.

He was employed as electrician by Mack Trucks, Hagerstown, retiring in 1994 after 24 years of service. He was then employed as electrician by Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro.

He was a member of Waynesboro Presbyterian Church, serving on the administrative council and as an usher.

He was a member of Acacia Lodge 586 AF&AM; BPO Elks Lodge 731; Eagles Club Inc.; Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15; and Wm. Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695, all of Waynesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Kay Elden McCleary, whom he married Feb. 11, 1977; four daughters, Diana McCleary Hoffman of Walkersville, Md., Julia Beth Walser of Los Angeles, Katherine J. Fingerman of New Market, Md., and Emily A. Hough of Waynesboro; five sons, Don Stephen McCleary of Raleigh, N.C., David S. McCleary and William L. Hough II, Tim E. Hough and Andrew P. Hough, all of Waynesboro; three sisters, Virginia M. Bakner, Doris A. Shockey and Mary C. Eyler, all of Waynesboro; two brothers, Charles E. McCleary Jr. and John F. McCleary, both of Waynesboro; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Waynesboro Presbyterian Church, 105 E. Main St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Charles B. Jessen will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

There will be no public viewing.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services in the church parlor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or Waynesboro Presbyterian Church, 105 E. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Louise E. Gray

RANSON, W.Va. - Louise Elizabeth Gray, 80, a resident of Shenandoah Home, died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, in the home.

Born Nov. 5, 1916, in Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert Owen Broyles and Nora Chaney Broyles.

She was a seamstress for more than 30 years.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Charles Town, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Elmer Richard Gray, who died Jan. 22, 1991.

She is survived by five daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Staubs of Charles Town, Jane Burcker of Laurel, Md., Anne K. Mason of Ranson, Mary Lynn Mauk of Shady Acres, W.Va., and Susan Miller of Bakerton, W.Va.; two sisters, Mary Penwell of Falls Church, Va., and Betty Wilt of Charles Town; 12 grandchildren; and11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Saunders and Lucy Casey; and two brothers, Leonard Broyles and Robert K. Broyles.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Charles Town. The Rev. Brian Shoda will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Harper's Ferry, W.Va.

Visitation will be Sunday at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to Independent Fire Co., Charles Town, W.Va. 25414; or St. James Catholic Church, Charles Town, W.Va. 25414.

Louise McKinley

INWOOD, W.Va. - Louise McKinley, 89, of Inwood, died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, at her home.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Born Feb. 27, 1908, in Johnstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Conrad and Mary Lauber Klaum.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis G. McKinley.

She was a retired beautician.

She was a member of Germantown Baptist Church of Maryland.

She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis J. Barbour of Martinsburg, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Eugene Kehl, Barry Kehl, Naomi Hartle and Darlene Parker; six great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Germantown Baptist Church of Maryland. The Rev. Rob D. Looney will officiate. Burial will be in Germantown Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from noon to 1 p.m.

Richard J. Simoules

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Richard James Simoules, 69, of 1010 Sunset Drive, who died Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997, attended Robert Fiance Academy for advanced beauty school training in New York.

He was a member of Marlowe Assembly of God Church, Marlowe, W.Va.

A. Burton Shafer

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A. Burton Shafer, 79, a resident of Menno Haven Penn Hall, Chambersburg, Pa., formerly of Greencastle, who died Thursday, was the son of the late Archibald Richards Shafer.

Lillian B. Shaffer

PETERSBURG, W.Va. - Lillian B. Shaffer, 87, of Petersburg, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997, at Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg.

She had been a resident of the home since Dec. 23.

Born Jan. 5, 1910, at Jones Spring, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George R. and Fannie Sharff Beall.

She was a graduate of Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

She taught elementary school for 30 years.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Petersburg.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Lester A. Shaffer; two sons, David G. Shaffer of Leonardtown, Md., and James L. Shaffer of Aberdeen, Md.; two sisters, Maxine Rash and Evelyn Beall, both of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister; Irma Beall Pauser; and one brother, John Douglass Beall.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Petersburg. The Rev. Fred Soltow will officiate. Burial will be in Sites Cemetery, Dorcas, W.Va.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Schaeffer Funeral Home, 11 N. Main St., Petersburg.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Grace Lutheran Church, Petersburg, W.Va. 26847; or charity of one's choice.
