Helen H. Physioc

BEAVER CREEK - Helen H. Physioc, 88, of Beaver Creek, died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997.

Born July 4, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Joseph K. Hoffman and Iola Elizabeth Hughes. She was a resident of Washington County for more than 80 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis J. Physioc Jr.

She was a 1928 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She attended Duke University before graduating from the Women's College of the University of North Carolina in 1935.

She was a member of the American Red Cross and taught swimming classes for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Washington County Historical Society, Boonsboro Historical Society, Girls Club and the American Association of University Women.

She is survived by one daughter, Paula H. Worthington of Hagerstown; one son, Philip S. Physioc of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Willis J. Physioc III; one sister, Ethel H. Snyder; and one brother, Dr. Paul W. Hoffman.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Beaver Creek Christian Church, Beaver Creek.

There will be no viewing. Her body was donated to the Maryland State Anatomy Board.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Elisabeth J. Grover

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Elisabeth Joy Grover, 40, of Charles Town, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at her home.

Born Aug. 26, 1956, in Loma Linda, Calif., she was the daughter of Floyd and Caralyn Johnson Foster of Loma Linda.

She was a 1980 graduate of Burge School of Nursing, Springfield, Mo.

She was a registered nurse at the American Consulate Office for Russia.

She was a member of Assembly of God Church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Randall Grover; twin daughters, Heather Kelsey Grover and Megan Bethany Grover, both at home; two sisters, Becky Bryant of Fremont, Calif., and Louise Licea of Mettler, Calif.; and one brother, Jonathan Foster of Arvada, Colo.

Services and burial will be private.

Arrangements are by Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va.

Vallie I. Donivan

GERRARDSTOWN, W.Va. - Vallie I. Donivan, 55, of Gerrardstown, died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Oct. 15, 1941, she was the daughter of Virgie Mae Hite Faircloth of Gerrardstown and the late Guy Westley Faircloth.

She was formerly employed by Martinsburg Laundry.

She was a member of Full Gospel Pentecostal Church of Middleway, W.Va.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son, James W. Faircloth Sr. of Martinsburg; three sisters, Mildred Mallatt of Martinsburg, Linda L. Sine and Lena Leonard, both of Gerrardstown; two brothers, Junior W. Faircloth and Charles W. Faircloth, both of Gerrardstown; two grandsons; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Wilmer Lee "Will" Morris.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. John Faircloth will officiate. Burial will be in Mountainside Tabernacle Cemetery, Poor House Road, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Louise E. Gray

RANSON, W.Va. - Services for Louise Elizabeth Gray, 80, a resident of Shenandoah Home, who died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Charles Town, W.Va. The Rev. Brian Shoda will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Harper's Ferry, W.Va.

Visitation will be today at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry from 7 to 9 p.m., where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

Floyd W. Gettel

TUCSON, Ariz. - Floyd W. Gettel, 67, of Tucson, died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, of cancer.

Born Sept. 22, 1929, he was the son of the late Nora and Harry Gettel.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty Gettel; two sisters, Ethel Goetz and Betty Cantner, both of Hagerstown; three brothers, Harry Gettel of Tucson, John Gettel and Bruce Gettel, both of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Floyd Gettel Jr.; and two sisters, Virginia Fratrick and Mary Jane Smith.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Tucson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to cancer research or to the charity of one's choice.

Norman A. Morter

SPRINGFIELD, Va. - Norman A. Morter, 74, of Springfield, and formerly of Greencastle, Pa., died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997, of a heart attack at Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, Va.

Born Feb. 6, 1923, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Alvey and Ada Barr Morter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Morter, in 1994.

He was a graduate of Greencastle High School.

He was employed by Potomac Electric Power in Washington, D.C., for 38 years.

He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.

He was a member of Springfield United Methodist Church, Springfield.

He is survived by two sons, Wayne Morter of Glen Allen, Pa., and Lester Morter of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Ethel Neal and Dorothy Morter, both of Waynesboro, Pa., and Mary Fox of Vincentown, N.J.; three brothers, Herman Morter of New Kensington, Pa., Harold Morter of Porthill, Idaho, and Perry Morter of Ione, Ore.; and two grandsons.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield. Burial will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, Va.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 3 to 6 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 7203 Poplar St., Annandale, Va. 22003.

Carl A. Wetzel

THURMONT, Md. - Carl Anthony Wetzel, 68, of Kelbaugh Road, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at The Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg, Pa.

Born Feb. 5, 1929, at home in Thurmont, he was the son of the late Ernest and Nora Hartdagen Wetzel.

He was a graduate of St. Anthony's Elementary School and a 1947 graduate of Emmitsburg High School, Emmitsburg, Md.

He retired from Cavetown Planing Mill in Cavetown as a draftsmen and estimator after 38 years of service. He was first employed by Mount St. Mary's College in the carpenter shop from 1947 to 1951.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He entered the Army in 1951 and served two years in anti-aircraft artillery, 711 AAA Gun Battery in Camp Stewart, Ga.; Fort Custer, Mich.; and gun site at Groose Pointe, Mich.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Shrine Parish of Emmitsburg and was a lector at Sunday mass.

He was a past Grand Knight of Brute Council 1860, Knights of Columbus, Emmitsburg; past faithful navigator of Bishop McNamara Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Frederick, Md. He was a member of the American Legion Francis X. Elder Post 121, Emmitsburg; and AMVETS Post 7, Thurmont.

He is survived by one sister, Ruth Etheridge of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, the Rev. Leo Wetzel of Lowell, Mass., and Brother Earl Wetzel of Tewksbury, Mass.; seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Eileen Otto; and one brother, Paul Wetzel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony's Shrine Parish, Emmitsburg. The Rev. Leo R. Tittler will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Shrine Cemetery.

The family will meet at Skiles Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, Thursday at 10:30 a.m. to go to the church.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., where a Christian wake service will be at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Oblates of Mary Immaculate, P.O. Box 419, Tewksbury, Mass. 01876.

Carl E. Riddle

ROUZERVILLE, Pa. - Carl E. Riddle, 56, of 13100 Mentzer Lane, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at his home.

Born Jan. 13, 1941, in Clay County, W.Va., near Gassaway, W.Va., he was the son of the late Oley P. and Olive L. Hamric Riddle. He lived his early life in Braxton County, W.Va.

He was a 1959 graduate of Gassaway High School.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served during the Vietnam War and served in Korea.

Following his discharge from the military, he started working at Grove Manufacturing, Shady Grove, Pa., as a welder. His last day of work, due to illness, was April 10, 1997.

He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1191, William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695 and Eagles Club Inc., all of Waynesboro.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Rosalea "Rose" Bickel Riddle, whom he married on Dec. 27, 1963; one daughter, Rachel A. Grimm of Greencastle, Pa.; one sister, Elizabeth Knight of West Union, W.Va.; a mother-in-law, Frances L. Pullin of Rouzerville, who helped to take care of him; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by two infant brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Mervil R. Stambaugh will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, near Rouzerville.

There will be no public viewing; however, the family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Summit Home Health, 176 S. Coldbrook Ave., Unit 3, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201-2128.

Margaret L. Hettenhouser

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Margaret Lee Hettenhouser, 73, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, at Integrated Health Services of Charles Town, W.Va.

Born Dec. 24, 1923, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas S. and Margaret Hesen Nicely.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Hettenhouser.

She was employed, over the years, by Julia's Restaurant, Carl's Restaurant, Perfection Garment and Central Restaurant in Charles Town. She also was a seasonal worker at Musselman.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Martinsburg.

She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America.

She is survived by one stepson, Ronald C. Hettenhouser of Oakton, Va.; one sister, Betty Ruppenthal of Martinsburg; one niece, Pamela A. Harden of Martinsburg, whom she raised; and one nephew.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 233 S. Queen St., Martinsburg. The Rev. John V. DiBacco Jr. will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Barbara L. Stevens

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Barbara L. Stevens, 53, of Berkeley Springs, and Orrtanna, Pa., died Saturday, Aug. 16, 1997, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.

Born Aug. 17, 1943, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Loretta Allenbaugh Meile of Baltimore and the late John G. Meile.

She was a homemaker.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She and her husband just recently purchased their vacation home in Berkeley Springs.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Oscar G. Stevens; three sons, William G. Stevens of Gardners, Pa., Richard G. Stevens of Warwick, R.I., and Willman G. Stevens, at home; four sisters, Loretta Chmielewski of Berkeley Springs, Lillian Keller and Laura McAlexander, both of Baltimore, and Mildred Shoemaker of Arvada, Colo.; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Peters Funeral Home, 321 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, Pa. The Rev. Lisa M. Leber will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg.

The family will receive friends at funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association, Adams County Division, P.O. Box 3293, Gettysburg, Pa. 17325.

Local arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs.
